Alexander Louis McDonald
Feb.12, 1915 - March 12, 2004

Alexander McDonald, dubbed "Mac, " by his friends and colleagues, was born in Thatcher near Banks, Oregon, to his parents Henry Charles McDonald and Louise Junker. He attended Thatcher Elementary School for the first eight grades and graduated from Forest Grove High School. He earned money for college by driving a dairy truck collecting milk. He earned a B.A. in history at Pacific University in Forest Grove and eventually obtained his Master's Degree from the University of Oregon. Mac's love for family began with his father and mother, his sister Ellen, and his brother, Howard. As a child, Mac spent untold hours with his father, the baseball coach for the Banks town team, practicing fielding and batting. At the age of 11, his father recruited him for the Banks team. He loved baseball forever after, eventually becoming a semi-pro baseball player for teams in Vancouver, British Columbia, and Bellingham, Washington. The characters and stories from Mac's baseball days later became part of the lore of Mac's life for his children.

After graduating from Pacific University, Mac got a teaching job in Ione, Oregon. One year later, he began teaching in Grass Valley, Oregon, where he fell in love with another teacher, Patricia Cyphers, from the Dalles. After Mac and Patricia wed, they moved to Medford, Oregon, where Mac got a job teaching history. When World War II broke out a year later, Mac joined the United States Navy and attended Midshipman's Training School in Notre Dame, becoming an Officer's Instructor. Before leaving for the South Pacific, he and Patricia had their first son, Scott. Mac served in the South Pacific until the war ended in 1944. He mustered out as a Lieutenant Junior Grade.

After his return from the war, Mac resumed his work in the Medford School District. Mac worked in the Medford School District for more than 38 years, first teaching history, later becoming a counselor and Dean of Boys, and finally becoming a high school principal. During his early years, Mac was the high school baseball coach. Many of the students he coached continued to stop by for years to say hello and recapture memories.

In Medford, Mac had three more children, Michael, Kaye, and Steven. His wife, children, and friends were the focus of his life. Mac encouraged his children to study and work hard. He also encouraged them to play and laugh. The family enjoyed vacations together camping with Mac's father and brother at various fishing lakes. His children remember many family times at the beach, especially at Honeyman State Park.

Mac's best friend was Devere Taylor, another Medford High teacher. Mac would watch Devere garden while the two solved the problems of the world. This gentle friendship was one of Mac's most closely held treasures.

After Mac retired, he and Patricia took time for themselves, traveling to Europe twice. However, Patricia contracted Parkinson's Disease in the early '80's, making further travel impossible. Mac was Patricia's caretaker for more than 12 years after she contracted Parkinson's. Through this difficult time, they were still able to find occasions to laugh at life and their predicament. Patricia died in 2001. Mac died at the home of his son Scott and his daughter-in-law Susan Pagano, on March 12, 2004, surrounded by family.

Mac is survived by his brother Howard and his four children, Scott, Michael, Kaye, and Steven. They hold him in their memories as a kind, hard-working, and intelligent human being, full of humor, utterly devoted to wife and family, and as he grew older, increasingly generous and tolerant of others. Above all, he was humble, grateful, and respectful of life.

He was much loved and will be greatly missed.
