Jack D. Foster
At home with his family, Jack D. Foster, "The Dahlia Man", went home to Jesus on Thursday evening March 4, 2004. Born in Wenatchee, Washington to Frank Alfred and Minn Webb Foster on April 23. 1922, he would always remind us that is the date (not the year) that Shakespeare, Shirley Temple, and Lassie were born also.
He graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in Wenatchee, and spent four years at the University of Washington in Seattle. During the war, he enlisted in the Marines, then transferred to the Navy because he wanted to be a Navy pilot. He received his training at St. Mary's Pre-Flight in California. His flight instructor was Robert Taylor (the movie actor). He flew the TBM Avenger. During his first solo flight Jack was very nervous, then from over the intercom came Taylor's loud voice singing "Mairzy Dotes." That nearly put Jack over the edge. He was reticent to talk about his war experiences, but did tell us about being picked up by a British ship and eating mutton for a week.
He was in the automobile business all his working life, first starting with his father in the Chevrolet dealership in Waterville, Washington, and then moving to Seattle. In the early 1950's he moved to Portland to become a District Manager for Buick Motor Division. He advanced to Business Manager, and then Car Distributor. He met his wife, Barbara, at this time, as she was also working for Buick. In 1964 he moved to Bremerton, Washington to manage Chuck Hazelwood Buick, and then in 1965 he moved to Grants Pass to Manage Mock Ford Sales. In the late 1960's he became Manager for Skinner Buick Cadillac in Medford, and then for Crater Lake Ford. After "retirement' in 1985 he worked for Northrup King Seed Company, traveling the Southern Oregon area and the Coast setting up displays and maintaining the seed stock. He worked for them for 18 years during the late winter and spring months.
He loved playing golf at the Laurel Hills Golf Course with his golfing buddies Martin Luther, Lyle Sharp, and Max Brown. It was a wonderful relationship, and he did get a hole in one. His other interest was Lewis and Clark and their expedition. He had read their journal several times and had read many books about this marvelous journey. His friend Ward Rein shared this interest, and they exchanged books about it.
Growing dahlias was his passion, and while they were blooming he would take them to his friends at the bank, doctors' office, and neighbors. Just about everyone in the area has had a bouquet of dahlias from Jack at one time or another. He won many prize ribbons at the Harvest Fair every year includeing many champion ribbons.
He is survived by his wife Barbara; daughter Sherald Najera and son- in-law Abraham in Colorado Springs, Colorado, son Patrick in Federal Way, Washington, son Dennis and daughter-in-law Cindy in Hillsboro, Oregon, son Jack in Spokane, Washington, and grandchildren Kelly Foster, Bobby Babsby, and Reiko Bagsby of Seattle, and Adrienne and Braden of Hillsboro. A son, Michael, died earlier. He is also survived by his former wife Mother Martina on Shaw Island, Washington.
Jack was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who got along with everyone. As his mother used to say, "He never knew a stranger". We will miss him so much.
