Nellie A. Hines
Nellie A. Hines, of Ashland, died at the age of 92. A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday at the Ashland Bible Church, 400 Dead Indian Memorial Rd. Pastors Nathan Shinn and Garland Shinn will officiate.
Nellie Ann (Jepson) Hines was born July 2, 1910 in Los Angeles, Calif. She resided in the Rogue Valley since 1962.
On Sept. 1, 1939 in Pasadena, Calif., she married Ray Hines, who survives.
She was educated at Glendale California College. She was a secretary to the City Manager in Glendale, Calif.
One of her favorite hobbies was rug weaving. She also attended Ashland Bible Church.
Survivors include spouse, Ray Hines of Ashland; daughters, Darline Squyres and Cheryl Ann Seefeldt; six grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Elsie and ay; and two brothers, Frank and Herbert.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.
Ernestine R. Allen-Ahrens
Ernestine R. Allen-Ahrens, 83, of Ashland, died Monday, Feb. 17, 2003, at the Ashland Community Hospital. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Crematory, Ashland.
John Edwin Baird
J. Edwin Baird, age 94, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003, at the home of his son, Douglas, in Ashland after a short illness. "Ed" first moved to Ashland in 1994. He was born on May 29, 1908 in Brigham City, Utah. In 1933, he married Elizabeth Bradshaw Maughan of Wellsville, Utah. They were married 58 years before her death in 1992. he was a kind, gentle and devoted husband, father and grandpa.
J. Edwin was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many capacities as a lay member including missionary, bishop, stake presidency and mission president. From 1961 to 1965, J. Edwin served as president of the Southwest Indian Mission, providing humanitarian and religious service to Native American tribes in the Southwest and Northern Plains States.
"Ed" enjoyed several professions during his lifetime, including; home builder, highway patrolman, county clerk, businessman, teacher, religious educator, writer, author, lecturer and handyman.
When he turned 80 years of age, having lost his sight, J. Edwin began to memorize dramatic impersonations that he had written on the life of his favorite historical and scriptural characters, such as Abraham Lincoln, Paul, Peter, Enoch, Joseph Smith and Moroni. Over the next decade, he stirred audiences, large and small in California, Utah, Idaho and Oregon with his dramatic presentations.
Ed was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth; his five sisters; Maude Merrill, Carmen Howell, Bertha Howell, Anna Smedley; Kathryn Haroldsen, and a grandson, John Erek Baird. Those of his family who remain to remember and honor him are: his three sons, Gareth Maughan (Sandra) Baird of Modesto, Calif., John Edwin (Janie) Baird of Provo, Utah and Douglas Frank (Christine) Baird of Ashland; sixteen grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, 2002 in the Ashland LDS Ward Chapel in Ashland. Viewing will be held from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. just before the services. Bishop Dean Cropper will be conducting the services. Internment will be in the cemetery in Brigham City, Utah.
Cheryl Marie Osmus
Cheryl Marie Osmus, 55, of Medford, died Sunday, Feb. 16, 2003 at her home.

Cheryl Marie Osmus was born Dec. 13, 1947 in Milledgeville, Ga., daughter to Horace and Louise Wright. She moved to the Rogue Valley from Durango, Colo. in 1989. She worked as a clerk at Wal-Mart.
Her hobbies included spending time with her grandchildren, gardening, collecting and listening to music, photography and helping others in need.
Survivors include two sons, Donald W. Gerald (and his partner Monica Metzger) of Medford and L. Tanner Gerald of Ashland; sister, Marsha Mayberry of Ruidoso, N.M.; brother, Buddy Wright of Milledgeville, Ga.; father, Horace Wright of Milledgeville; two granddaughters, Miranda and Rachel Gerald; and close friends, Stuart Osmus and Tom Gerald.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Louise Wright and grandson, Walker Gerald.
Arrangements are under the direction of Hillcrest Memorial Park and Mortuary, Medford.
Patricia Lee Klinefelter
The memorial service for Patricia Lee Klinefelter will be at 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, 2003 at the First United Presbyterian Church, Ashland. Officiating will be Pastor Scott Dalgarno and Bunny Oliver of the First Presbyterian Church.
Mrs. Klinefelter, 56, of Ashland, died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003 at the Ashland Community Hospital. She was born Dec. 7, 1946 at Zanesville, Ohio, the daughter of Doris and Ralph McCabe. She lived in San Jose, Calif. and the Los Angeles, Calif. area where she worked as a bookkeeper in the banking industry. She moved to Ashland in 1993.
Surviving are: her mother and step father Doris and Fred Binnewies of Ashland; three daughters, Trina Jacob of Medford, Laura Klinefelter and Erica Toland both of Beaverton, Ore.; one brother, David McCabe of Ashland; one sister, Carol McAndrew of Woodburn, Ore.; and six grandchildren.

Robert J. LaPoint
Robert J. LaPoint, 74, of Ashland, died Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003 in a local nursing home.
Robert was born Feb. 26, 1928 in Milwaukee, Wisc. to Genevieve and Max LaPoint. On August 18, 1951 in Santa Barbara, Calif., he married Joan Marie Peiffer. They had six children. Robert served as an aviation radioman in the US Navy. He later worked in business, banking and real estate. In 1987, he wrote a book about the history of Las Vegas. He enjoyed politics, reading and public speaking. In 1997, Robert moved to Ashland.
Robert is survived by his daughter, Suzanne Haveman (Richard) of Ashland; his sons, Thomas LaPoint (Lynette) of Sandy, Utah, Steven LaPoint of Tucson, Ariz., Michael LaPoint of Anaheim, Calif., Gregory LaPoint of Denver, Colo. and Edward LaPoint (Kimberly) of Shady Cove; his brothers, John LaPoint of Laguna Woods, Calif., Dick LaPoint of Paradise Calif. and Jim LaPoint of Bullhead City, Ariz.; Joan Butcher of Ashland; eleven grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2003 at the Eagle Point National Cemetery in Eagle Point, Ore.
Olive Furness Tarzian
Olive Furness Tarzian, 94, of Corvallis, Ore., died Feb. 20, 2003 in Corvallis.
Olive was born Oct. 22, 1908 in Los Angeles, Calif., daughter to George and Mattie Sharp. On Feb. 6, 1937 in Reno, Nev., she married Haig Harry Tarzian.
Native of Selma, Calif., she graduated from the University of California, Berkeley. Olive pursued a nursing career until marrying Harry Tarzian, a civil bridge engineer who worked for the California Division of Highways. They worked and traveled internationally until retiring in Ashland in 1970. They left their Ashland home to live in Eugene and then Corvallis in 1988 to be close to their son an daughter-in-law, and grandchildren who settled in Albany in 1989.
Olive was a member of the Eastern Star, Ashland. She also enjoyed gardening and antique collecting.
Survivors include son, Peter Tarzian of Albany, Ore.; six grandchildren; and four great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Haig Harry Tarzian and brother, Malcolm Sharp.
Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2003, at DeMoss-Durdan Funeral Home, Corvallis. Graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28, 2003, at Mountain View Cemetery, Ashland. Officiating clergy is the Order of the Eastern Star. Memorial contributions can be made to Eastern Star, Local Chapter, Ashland.
Odessa Ehrhart
Odessa Ehrhart took her last breath Friday, Feb. 21, 2003 at the Jackson House in Talent, surrounded by her family. She had just celebrated her 92nd Valentine Birthday. "Dess" loved to travel, cook, garden, paint and play bingo. Born in McKeesport, Penn. and a long time member of the Westside Methodist Church, she also lived in Arizona, where she fell in love with the desert, Montana and Oregon.
She is survived by her son, Tommy Ehrhart and his wife, Rita of Montana; three grandchildren, Jessie Hodgdon or Oregon, Tim Ehrhart of the Netherlands and Debbie Gaynes of Pennsylvania; her former daughter-in-law, Nancy Ehrhart of Florida; and six great grandchildren, Russell and Peter Hodgdon, Kristine and Marc Ehrhart, and Jocelyn and Jillian Gaynes. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Edith Sarvey; husband, John Thomas Ehrhart and sisters Lona Straza and Viola Caso. There will be one gathering at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2003 at Mountain View Retirement Residence in Ashland and another at 2 p.m. at the Jackson House in Talent to remember and celebrate Odessa's life.
