Thomas 'Jerry' Smith
July 23, 1937 - Jan. 7, 2004 Thomas "Jerry" Smith, 66, of Phoenix, OR passed away at his home on Wednesday (Jan. 7, 2004).
A graveside service will be held (today) Friday, Jan. 9, 2004 at 11 a.m. at Eagle Point National cemetery.
Mr. Smith was born on July 23, 1937 in Globe, AZ to Jack and Etheleen (Hocking) Smith. He grew up and attended school there. He entered the United States Air Force and served until being honorably discharged at the rank of Airman Second Class in 1962. Following that, Mr. Smith returned to AZ and started an apprenticeship as an electrician in the copper mines. He later moved to South America and worked for eight years before moving to the Rogue Valley in 1973. He worked for Boise Cascade Lumber Company as an electrician.
Mr. Smith was a life member of the National Rifle Association and enjoyed raising show birds, the outdoors, his grandchildren and watching football and boxing.
Survivors include his wife, Socorro, whom he married
in Medford on August 6, 1995; sons, John Smith of Chandler, AZ, Scott Smith of Dublin, CA, Jack Smith of Ashland, OR; daughters, Liz Smith of Tempe, AZ, Teresa Zamudio of White City, Libertad Serna of Phoenix, OR; sisters, Jackie Labato and Barbara Stephenson of Globe, AZ; and five grandchildren.

Lillian Mae Keeton
The Memorial Service for Lillian Mae Keeton will be 2 p.m. Sunday, February 15, 2004 at the Ashland First Baptist Church. Officiating will be Pastor Robert Mathers of the Alliance Bible Chapel, Ashland and Pastor Dwayne Robinson of the Ashland First Baptist Church. A private family interment will be at Mountain View cemetery, Ashland.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alliance Bible Chapel, 748 Siskiyou Blvd, Ashland, Oregon 97520.
Mrs. Keeton, 86, of Phoenix, died Sunday, February 8, 2004 at the Ashland Community Hospital. She was born September 25, 1917 at Salinas, California the daughter of Martha and Edgar Clark. She was raised and attended schools in Salinas.
On June 11, 1949 at Virginia City, Nevada she married
Phillip Keeton who preceded her in death in 1983. Following their marriage they settled in Ashland. She moved to Phoenix, Oregon in 1988.
Lillian was active with school activities as her children grew up including Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts and the PTA. She bowled on a local bowling league, and attended the Christian Women's Club. She was a member of the Alliance Bible Chapel in Ashland.
She enjoyed gardening, family and pets. For a number of years she modeled for Fortmiller's Department store in Ashland as well as several other local clothing stores.
Surviving are: two sons, Kip Keeton and his wife Jeri of Ashland, Kerry Keeton and his wife Olga of Central Point, OR; two daughters Debbie Cameron of Phoenix and Cheryl Damon and her husband Dale of Medford; one brother Edward Clark of Phoenix; two sisters Gladys Gillespie of Phoenix and Marion Truluck and her husband Sam of Sun City, Arizona; and three grandchildren.
In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.

Mary Kraft
Mrs. Mary Kraft passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, doting grandmother, and devout Catholic. She led by example and never failed to see the good things in life.
She is survived by her husband Duane, of 54 years; her children, Mike and Nancy and their families, including two grandchildren. She is much loved and will be sorely missed.
A funeral Mass will be held in her memory at the Providence Hospital Chapel in Medford at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2004.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Oregon Heart Association, or to the Cardiac Care Unit at either Providence Hospital or Rogue Valley Medical Center.
We know that Jesus saved her a special place with Him.
William 'Bill' Johns
Athena, Oregon native, William "Bill" Johns, 83, died Thursday (Feb. 5, 2004) at the Rogue Valley Medical Center, Medford.
At his request, there will be a private graveside service in Athena at a later date.

Bill was born in Pendleton, OR Nov. 28, 1920 to Flint and Eleanor Johns. After graduation from Athena High School in 1938, he attended the University of Oregon graduating with a Master of Science in Geology. On April 19, 1942 in Portland OR, he married
Miriam Wood, who survives.
During World War II, he served as a B-17 pilot, and later, a B-29 pilot. Following his discharge, he worked as a geologist on the Reactor Testing Station near Arco, Idaho. When his job completed, he returned to Athena to farm with his brother and two brothers-in-law. Later, he and his three partners became feedlot operators, in addition to their farming. This became so successful they had feedlots in Athena, OR, Ontario, OR, and Idaho. After he retired from farm activities, he continued feeding cattle in Santa Maria, CA, Vancouver, WA, and Independence, OR.
Mr. Johns was involved with the Umatilla and Oregon Cattlemen's Assoc., Oregon Beef Council, and served on the National Cattlemen's Assoc., as a Feeder Representative. The NW Livestock PCA was a favorite organization he served for many years, and he had served as its President before retiring. He was a past commander of the Athena American Legion, PGG board, and belonged to BPOE and UCHS.
After moving from Brookings to the Rogue Valley Manor Plaza, he became a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
In addition to his wife survivors include, his son, Tom Johns of Walla Walla, WA; daughter, Sharon Evans of Athena, OR; hs brother, Maurice Johns of Althena; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Helen Smith and Althadel Beamer, and his parents.

Colleen Ireland Rutchland
"Coco" Rutchland (37) passed away at her Maui residence on Tuesday Morning Feb. 3, 2004. She was born in Ashland on Oct. 22, 1966; the daughter of the late Richard and Gloria Ireland. She grew up in the Valley View area on her parent's ranch. She attended Ashland schools and graduated from Ashland High in 1984. On May 28, 1988 she married
Ryan Rutchland in Ashland, a painting contractor. The couple had two sons. Coco loved her friends and family greatly. She was involved in the activities of her two boys. She was a wonderful hostess who loved to entertain at her homes in Talent and Medford. Two years ago the family moved to Maui. She worked as a salesclerk. Mrs. Rutchland is survived by her husband Ryan and sons Kyle and Corey; her three sisters, Carri Six, Connie Ireland, and Corinne Griffin; her brother, Rick Ireland; her grandmother Marie Ireland; her stepmothers, Emma Veary and Serene Ireland; her four stepsisters, Robyn, Kathy, Emily and Liz. She was a joy to us all.
Dennis H. 'Bud' McNicol
Jan. 28, 1939 - Feb. 9, 2004 Dennis was the third child of Harold and Pauline McNicol. He was very civic-minded and was the president-elect of the West Salem Lions.
Survivors include his wife, Angela; son, David McNicol of California; step-son, Rick Barnett (Janis) of Eagle Point; grandchildren, Cory, Kris and Kyle; sisters, Donna (Barry) Olgeby and Joan (Andie) Calvey, both of Medford; brother, Bob (Nancy) McNicol of California; and several nieces and nephews.
Services are at 3 p.m., Friday, February 13 at Westgate Assembly of God Church, Wallace Rd., West Salem, with a gathering of friends following, also at the church. Contributions may be made to the church or to West Salem Lion's Club.
Evelyn A. Whaley
The funeral service for Evelyn Adeline Whaley, 77, of Medford, who died Sunday (Feb. 8, 2004), will be held on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Memory Gardens Mortuary. Interment will be in Memory Gardens Memorial Park.
She was born on April 8, 1926 in Hugo, OR. On Oct. 26, 1944 in Medford, she married
Edwin Wayne Whaley, who preceded her in death in 1973.
Mrs. Whaley had worked for Reter Fruit Co. for 20 years.
She loved family, gardening, landscaping, shopping, country music, the outdoors, helping others and long rides in the country and to the coast.
Mrs. Whaley is survived by, a son, Duane Whaley, Medford; a brother, Lawrence Ellis, Gold Hill; her grandchildren, Monique Rush, Harley Lee and Brian Wolford, all of Medford, Nichole England, Shady Cove, Heather Whaley-Kirby, Shreveport, LA, Christina Davis, Apple Valley, CA and Shakira Targett, Ft. Campbell, KY; and five great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Vernon Whaley and her parents, Chester and Wanda Ellis.

James Lewis Lamb
James Lewis Lamb age 79, died Sunday, February 8, 2004, at Sunrise Senior Care Home in Central Point. A service will be held today, February 12 at 11 a.m at Eagle Point National cemetery.
Jim was born January 17, 1925 in Los Angeles, California to John Joseph Lamb and Bethyl Blanche Lamb (Simpson).
Jim joined the U.S. Navy immediately upon graduation of high school and served during World War II in the Pacific theater. He was a radio man on the USS Morris. Jim married
his lifelong love, Marcia Keith, on January 17, 1946 in Los Angeles, California.
After the war, Jim attended the University of Southern California and graduated with a degree in geology. Jim spent his career as a geologist working in the oil exploration field for Exon. His career took him to many places including South America, Europe, and Japan, finally settling in Houston, Texas. Jim retired in 1982, and moved to Medford in 1987. Jim enjoyed his retirement in southern Oregon. He had a beautiful garden, and enjoyed camping with Marcia.
Jim never knew a stranger, and was always willing to lend a helping hand to others.
He is survived by his son Steve Lamb of Central Point; and his daughter Christie Lamb of Jacksonville. Jim was preceded in death by his beloved Marcia in 2001, and a son, John, in 1966.
Memorial contributions may be made in Jim's name to the Medford Gospel Mission.

Mille Rae Ruth Dauster The memorial service for Millie Rae Ruth Dauster will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday (Feb. 16, 2004) at the Central Point Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Mrs. Dauster, 44 (June 15, 1959) died Dec. 27, 2003 in Arizona.
Arrangements: Conger-Morris Central Point Chapel.
Opal Waddell
Opal Beatrice Waddell, of Central Point, died Feb. 10, 2004 at a local foster care.
A funeral service will be held Friday, Feb. 13, at the Central Point Conger-Morris Chapel, with interment at the Eagle Point National cemetery. The visitation will be Friday at the chapel from 11-1 p.m.
Opal was born Sept 18, 1923 in McKirken, OK, the daughter of Newton and Inez Jackson.
She was married
to Glenn W. Waddell on July 19, 1947 in Yuma, Arizona.
She was a homemaker devoted to her family and a musician who played many instruments.
In addition to her husband, survivors include: her son, Kenneth of Medford; two daughters, Shelly Gierman of Medford, and Gale Wilson of Salem; and one grandson, David Gierman of Medford. She was preceded in death by her brother, Manuel and a sister, Ruth.

Sarah A. Powell
Sarah A. Powell, age 41, died in Spokane, WA on February 3, 2004.
She was born in Spokane on January 21, 1963 and graduated from Lewis and Clark High School with honors. She attended Pomona College, the University of Washington and the Sorbonne.
She became interested in wine while at the Lycee Agricole de Macon-Davaye in France. She returned to the United States to study at the University of California, Davis, where she received a degree in fermentation science in 1988.
She worked in the wine industry in South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, and as assistant winemaker for The Hogue Cellars in Prosser, WA. In 1991, she became the winemaker for Foris Vineyards Winery in Cave Junction, OR, where she remained for ten years, winning many honors and awards.
She created Vigneron Consulting to promote best viticulture practices with grape growers. In 2002, she became co-owner and winemaker for a new business, Roxy Ann Winery, built in the historic Hillcrest Orchard in Medford. In 2003, she commenced marketing her own premium brand under the label Sarah Powell Wines, until she was struck down by cancer in the prime of her career.
She greatly enjoyed kayaking on the Rogue and Illinois Rivers, and climbing and telemark skiing in her beloved Siskiyou Mountains. She promoted wise use of natural resources and supported ecological awareness.
She is survived by her father, William J. Powell, and step mother, Leona Dater, Spokane; a sister, Amy Erixon of Evanston, IL; two brothers, David Powell of Seattle and Daniel Powell of Spokane; and her beloved partner, Mike Irwin of Carmel, CA. She was preceded in death by her mother, Ann Powell.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on March 13, 2004, at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Spokane.

Thomas 'Ryan' Toner
Thomas "Ryan" Toner died February 7, 2004 in Beverly Hills, California at the age of 26.
Ryan was born on September 30, 1977 in Green Bay, Wisconsin. He lived in Green Bay while his late father, Thomas Toner, played football for the Green Bay Packers. As a child Ryan lived in Boston, Massachusetts, San Diego, California and Pocatello, Idaho where he graduated high school.
He attended junior college in Santa Cruz, California where he was a member of the varsity football team. Ryan continued his studies at Rowan University in Glassboro, New Jersey where he was a contributing member of the varsity football team that finished runner-up for the Division III N.C.A.A. National Championship. He ultimately settled in Southern California and began a successful career as a model. He was blessed to travel the world while modeling.
Ryan will always be remembered by his beautiful bright smile that told of the amazing love in his great big heart. Ryan never knew a stranger and reached out to all who crossed his path with genuine conern, interest, compassion and conversation. He truly loved life and he loved his family and friends with abundance beyond all other. May he rest in peace in the arms of God in whom he believed and trusted with his life.
Ryan is survived by his mother, Susan Toner; sister, Polly Toner; grandparents, Sallie and Garrett Williamson; aunt and uncle, Joan and Paul Delong; brothers, Jason Morgan, Ethan Fisher, Connor and Sander Hadley, Kirk Hadley; his grandmother Eleanor Toner and aunts, uncles and cousins of the Toner Family; special friends, Rick and Lisa Morgan; and special love, Kenyon Woolley.
Funeral arrangements are being made by El Camino Mortuary in San Diego, California. Services will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, February 13, 2004 at the Solana Beach Presbyterian Church in Solana Beach, California.
Honorary memorial donations may be made to any local homeless shelter. Ryan always had a special place in his heart for the homeless and he generously fed or assisted them any chance he could. Ryan will be greatly missed by all who had the fortunate pleasure of meeting him.

Ornan Robert Allen
The funeral for Ornan Robert Allen will be 2 p.m. Saturday, February 14, 2004 at the Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland. Interment will be at Scenic Hills Memorial Park, Ashland.
Mr. Allen, 96, of Abilene, Texas, formerly Ashland, died Monday, February 9, 2004 at the Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene, Texas. He was born October 20, 1907 at Shattuck, Oklahoma, the son of Stella and Ezekiel Allen. He was raised and attended schools in Oklahoma.
On July 13th, 1935 at Rush Springs, Oklahoma he married
the former Dorothy Brown, who preceded him in death in 1994. Mr. and Mrs. Allen lived in Tolleson, Arizona for many years where they raised their family. In 1964, they moved to Ashland. In 1996, Mr. Allen moved to Abilene, Texas.
Surviving are: four sons, Terrell Wayne Allen of Honolulu, Hawaii, Jimmie Robert Allen of Ogden, UT, William Harley Allen of Abilene, TX, and Phillip Ray Allen of Roseburg, OR; 1 daughter, Lorraine Nichols of Medford; 1 brother, Pete Allen of Brentwood, CA; 1 sister, Pearl Andre of Tempe, AZ; 13 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Willard 'Pete' Pedersen
A graveside service for Willard "Pete" Pedersen will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2004, at Eagle Point Memorial cemetery.
Mr. Pedersen, 85, of Shady Cove, died February 14, 2004 at his home.
He was born on July 20, 1918 in Tacoma, Washington to Eva and Gus Pedersen.
As a young adult, in Medford, he worked with his father at Medford Brake and Clutch on Riverside Drive. On Sept. 15, 1945, in California, he married
Eloise who survives.
Mr. Pedersen served proudly in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII.
He retired as a automotive brake sales specialist in 1982 and moved to Shady Cove from California.
Mr. Pedersen enjoyed fishing and gardening.
Survivors include a son, Robert; a daughter and son in law, Carol and David Jury; two brothers, Les and Cliff; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Hazel Iris, and Nadine, and two brothers.
