Doris E. Modee
The graveside service for Doris E. Modee will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004 at Eagle Point National cemetery.
Mrs. Modee, 73, of Eugene, formerly of Eagle Point, died Friday (Jan. 2, 2004) in Eugene.
She was born on Dec. 14, 1930 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan to Edward and Jennetta (Nicholson) Bell.
On June 14, 1950 in Las Vegas, NV she married
Leonard Modee who preceded her in death in 1998. They lived in Eagle Point from 1960 to 1998.
Mrs. Modee received a Masters Degree in Education. She worked as a teacher.
She was a member of the American Cattlewomen's Association, Mended Hearts, and the Oregon Education Association.
She enjoyed needle crafts and cooking.
Survivors include: two sons, Steve of Eugene, and Charles of Coram, MT; a daughter, Susan Modee of Talent, OR; a brother, Clifford Bell of Cochrane, Alberta Canada; two sisters, Ethel Monroe of Escondido, CA, and Joyce Fiscus of Santa Clarita, CA; and six grandchildren.

Erwin William Carls
Services for Erwin William Carls will be Wed. Jan. 7 at 2 p.m. at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland. Pastor Dick Hamilton of Gold Hill Christian Church will officiate. Mr. Carls passed away Friday, (Jan 2, 2004) at Providence Medical Center at age 96.
Erwin was born June 10, 1907 in Racine, WI to Louis and Meta Lensert Carls, the eldest of five children. On June 20, 1928 in Pomona, CA he married
Della Coppersmith. She preceded him in death on Aug. 8, 2001, after 73 years of marriage.
Erwin moved from Racine to Yuma, CO and later to Pomona, CA where he lived until 1970 when he moved to Medford, OR. Over the years Erwin held various jobs in the carpentry and tile setting trades. He worked for a number of years as an instructor in tile setting at the Calif. Institution for Men in Chino, CA. During this time he authored a book on the subject, "The Art of Tile Setting." He and Della owned and operated three natural history museums, the most recent one, "Nature's Treasure Chest" in Gold Hill, OR.
His lifetime interest was in the study of natural science and God's creation. He corresponded and exchanged specimens with other collectors all over the world. His vast collection was donated to the Institute for Creation Research in Santee, CA a few years ago. He was considered by many an expert in the field of lepidaptera, mineralogy, and woods of the world. His name was mentioned in "Who Knows - and What Among Authorities - Experts and the Specially Informed." He was a charter member of the International Wood Collectors Society and an honorary lifetime member.
In addition to his collecting, research and study, Erwin enjoyed his daily Bible reading, his family and friends, attending church and, of course, God's awesome creation. He was a member of Gold Hill Christian Church and Ashland Christian Church.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Margaret McKendrick and Isabel Pitts and his brother, Marvin Carls. One sister, Caroline Woodward of Eagle Point remains.
Other survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, David and Mary Lou Carls of Pomona, CA, his daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Wayne Christian of Ashland, OR, seven grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.

Oliver P.'Jim' Taylor
A celebration of life for Oliver P. (Jim) Taylor will be held on today, January 6, at 3 p.m. in the auditorium of the Rogue Valley Manor.
Mr. Taylor, 83, of Medford, died Wednesday (Dec. 31, 2003) at Rogue Valley Hospital.
He was born on June 11, 1920, in Wiley, Colorado, Jim was the son of Leo and Laura Taylor. He moved to Medford in 1935. He was a 1939 graduate of Medford High School and graduated from University of Oregon in 1943.
Upon graduating from Naval Reserve Officer Training in the same year, Jim married
Lorene Marguth, of Harrisburg, Oregon, on October 29, 1943. In January, 1944, he began his service in the South Pacific on the USS Independence, where he served in World War II.
For 32 years, from 1951 to 1983, Jim owned the C.P.A. practice, O.P. Taylor & Co., in downtown Medford. From 1973 to the present, he enjoyed being an active investor in apartments and mini-warehouse storage in our valley. With Lorene, his wife of sixty years, Jim enjoyed travel, family trips, church, their many precious friends, and time with his children and grandchildren. His interests included hiking, mountain climbing, water and snow skiing, and he was a participant, at age 72, in the five-hundred mile event, Cycle Oregon. He enjoyed barber shop singing and being a member of the Methodist Church Choir.
Jim was a member of Salvation Army, Lions, Crisis Intervention, Toastmasters, and was a Boy Scout leader.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Leo and Clyde (both of Medford) a sister, Margie, and a daughter, Janice, who died in 1989.
His heartfelt smile and positive attitude will be remembered by his wife, Lorene, two daughters, Denna Manning of Medford, and Teresa Taylor of Berkeley, California, and his son, Greg Taylor of Medford, and his seven grandchildren.

Suzanne G. Vallee
Suzanne G. Vallee, 89, of Phoenix, died Friday (Jan. 2, 2004) at her home. No services are planned.
She was born on Dec. 21, 1914 in France. On April 15, 1992 in Reno, NV she married
Herbert R. Vallee who survives. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1972.
Mrs. Vallee was a homemaker.
In addition to her husband survivors include two daughters, Claudine Likes of Phoenix, OR and Monique Child of Wildomar, CA.

Elizabeth Rose Stanek
Elizabeth Rose Stanek died Jan. 13, 2004 at age 45.
Liz was born Jan. 26, 1958, in Oceanside, Calif. She moved to Ashland with her family in 1969 and graduated from Ashland High School in 1976. She lived in Ashland and Talent for most of her life, but worked in Portland, OR as a legal secretary in the early 1980s.
Survivors include her brothers, Rick, Chris, and Greg.
Graveside service is Jan. 25, 2004, 1 p.m., at Ashland cemetery on Morton Street.
Remembrances, in lieu of flowers, can be made to Ashland Community Hospital Foundation.
Grace R. Hunter
Grace R. (Best) Hunter, 97, passed away Monday (Jan. 19, 2004) at a local foster care home in Medford. A private service and interment was held at Logtown cemetery in Ruch. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 24, at 11 a.m. at the Ruch Community Church.
Mrs. Hunter was born on Nov. 18, 1906 in Admire, Kansas to Dave and Bertha (Baysinger) Best. She married
Glenn Hunter of Kansas.
Mrs. Hunter was a partner of the Hunter & Best Sawmill in Ruch in the 1950s. She worked all her life as a bookkeeper in the lumber mills, even driving dump truck.
She was very active in churches in Southern Oregon and instrumental in helping build several churches in the area.
She loved bowling, music, played several musical instruments, sang in church choirs, and was an expert at seamstress and crocheting.
Survivors include a daughter, Viola Lewis of Medford; two sons, Raymond Ayers of Medford, and Billy Joe Hunter of Ruch; a brother, Glen Best of Brookings; 15 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Glenn Hunter and a daughter, Eldana wood.

Norman E. Bandy
Norman E. Bandy, 83, of White City, died on Monday (January 19th, 2004) in Ashland. A private service will be held.
Norman was born on April 16, 1920 in Carterville, Missouri to Elmer and Norma Bandy.
During WW II he served in the 8th Army's Quartermaster Corps.. He saw action in the South Pacific and followed General Douglas MacArthur back to the Phillipines, to Leyte and to Japan, where he arrived five days after Japan surrendered.
He moved to Medford in 1948 where he was employed by the Greyhound Bus Company as a driver. He retired after thirty years in 1978.
On December 6, 1948, he married
Millicent Roberts who preceded him in death in 1997.
Mr. Banty was an active member of the Salvation Army and a volunteer for Child Evangelism Fellowship.
He enjoyed camping with his Good Sam friends, fishing, and children.
He is survived by three sons, Patrick Bandy, James M. Bandy of Eugene, and Robert W. Bandy of Medford; one daughter, Sandra L. Hess of Medford; one brother, Marvin Bandy of Central Point; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four nephews; and a very special family friend, Marjorie Myers. In addition to his wife, Millicent, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Gene Bandy and Jim Bandy; one sister, Melba Meullcr; and one grandson, James M. Bandy Jr.

Roger J. Not
Roger J. Not, 75, of Medford died Tuesday (Jan. 20, 2004) at a local foster care home. Arrangements: Abbey Funeral, Medford.
Stanley Curtis Jobe
Stanley Curtis Jobe, 86, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004 at Providence Medical Center in Medford.
A Memorial service will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004 in the First Presbyterian Church in Ashland. Family and friends are invited to attend a reception immediately following the church service to be held in Calvin Fellowship Hall of the Church.
Stanley was born October 14, 1917 in Barnett, Missouri. He was the eldest of nine children to Arthur and Dollie Jobe.
He served in the Army Air Force and Infantry during World War II. Stan left for North Africa on October 30, 1942. His unit landed near Casablanca, Morocco. He was in charge of removing wounded and deceased personnel.
Stan married
Doris Clark in Billings, Montana on Jan. 19, 1946.
He graduated from Willamette University. While teaching Spanish part-time, he worked toward a Master's degree at the University.
In Burns, Oregon, Mr. Jobe taught, became assistant principal and then Superintendent.
In 1956, Mr. Jobe became Principal of Ashland High School. In 1958, he became the Superintendent of Ashland Schools, a position he held for twenty-two years.
He served in many civic and professional organizations. He was also very active in the Presbyterian Church of Ashland. Stan was an elder and was chairman of the Calvin Hall building program.
Stan loved the outdoors. He had a boat and fished for several years on the ocean. He also took up painting after his retirement and worked a lot with his computer.
He is survived by a daughter, Janis Kuchler and son-in-law, John Kuchler; grandchildren, Nicole Kuchler and Andre Michael Kuchler of Pendleton, OR; two brothers of Sedalia, MO; one sister of Sedalia, MO; two sisters of Versailles, MO; and one sister of Stover, MO. Stan was preceded in death by his wife, Doris, and one brother.
Sybil Bernice Reames
Sybil Bernice Reames, 88, died Jan. 4, 2004 in Salem at her home in Capitol Manor.
She was born Feb. 22, 1915 in North Phoenix to Earnest E. and Nina M. (Furry) Reames. Bernice attended school in North Phoenix and Central Point, graduating from high school in 1933.
She finished Southern Oregon Normal School in 1935, and taught one year at Golden Falls (near Coos Bay). Bernice was honorably discharged from the U.S. Marines Women's Corps with the rank of Sergeant in March 1946.
In June 1950, she graduated from Oregon State College with dual Bachelor's degrees. She began working, at that time, as an auditor for the Oregon State Higher Education office in Corvallis and continued until her retirement in 1946.
She was a member of St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in Salem, and a master gardener. She enjoyed reading non-fiction and doing cross word puzzles.
Survivors include a sister, Leota Reames Frakes of Ashland; a nephew, William Gregory of Portland; a niece, Nina Anne Bailes of Medford. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Roberta Reames Gregory; a brother, Eugene E. Reames; and a niece, Nell Frakes.
At Bernice's request, no services will be held, her ashes will be buried in the family plot at Phoenix cemetery.

Barbara L. Wall Ziegler
Jan. 14, 1919 ~ Jan. 16, 2004 Barbara Louise Wall Ziegler, mother of three daughters, grandmother of seven and great-grandmother of seven, died on Friday, January 16, 2004 in Medford.
A Memorial service is planned for January 31st, at Horton Plaza in Medford. This special service will be held at 3:30 p.m.
Barbara was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii, graduated from Rosevelt High School and Dietz Business College. Her parents were Walter E. Wall and Edith Dietz Wall of Honolulu, Hawaii. Her father was Surveyor General of the Territory of Hawaii and her great-grandfather, the late Charles John Wall, was the architect for Iolani Palace (the only Royal Palace in the United States today), and built in Honolulu, Hawaii in the 1880's.
During World War II, Barbara was a volunteer for The American Red Cross and the USSO. She taught Arthur Murry Ballroom Dance to servicemen stationed at Hickam Air Force Base and Pearl Harbor. The Barbara Wall Dance School, at the Service Club, was the benefit of many, young and old.
Next to her love of music and ballroom dance, Barbara's passion was to entertain others with her unique Hawaiian spirit and Aloha. In recent years, after moving to Medford and residing at Horton Plaza, she so enjoyed sharing with her friends her heart of Hawaii by dancing her hula and giving her shell lei's for special occassions.
One of Barbara's biggest joys in her life were her daughters, Nancy Robertson, Joan Sem, Janelle Hickok, and step-daughter, Kitty Kenworthy. Her happiness was in her grandchildren, Mathew, Samson and Kameron Robertson, Kara Whitcome, Brandon and John Bruce, Catie Stedman, Stacy and Judy Kenworthy. In addition, she also took delight in her great-grandchildren, Kyley, Hayden, Sierra and Kiana Robertson, Nai'a and Mele Bruce and Logan Stedman.
Our loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend Barbara, with her grace, compassion and unselfishness, will be missed by all who knew her.
In lieu of flowers, Barbara Ziegler's wishes would be donations given in behalf of her grandson, John, who is a missionary in New Castle, Australia starting a new church and spreading God's love with others. Gabriel F. Recos, Sr.
At his request there are no services scheduled for Gabriel F. Recos, Sr., 75 of Medford, who died Tuesday (Jan. 20, 2004) at his home. Inurnment will be in the Garden of Honor within Hillcrest Memorial Park, Medford.
Mr. Recos was born Jan. 25, 1928 in Petersham, Massachusetts to Gabriel Peter and Anna (Koskie) Recos. On June 30, 1950 in Athol, Massachusetts, he married
Virginia "Ginny" Whitney, who survives.
He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean war.
Mr. Recos worked as a supervisor for the U.S. Forest Service in their reforestation and maintenance departments for 30 years, and at Blackbird for four years. He moved to the Rogue Valley from Las Vegas in 1975.
Survivors besides his wife, Ginny, include his four children, Linda Vara of Las Vegas, NV, Gabriel, Jr. of Jacksonville, Bruce of Medford, Lori McNair of Prineville; three brothers; one sister; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Jackie Anne Hansen
Jackie Anne Hansen, 38, of Chico, CA died Monday (Jan. 19, 2004) at Enloe Medical Center in Chico, CA after suffering from a long illness. Cremation has taken place, a private family service will be held at a later date.
Jackie was born on June 22, 1965 in South St. Paul, MN to Janice (Jan) Hogenson-Stagner and Fred H. Hansen. She moved to Medford in 1979 from Duluth MN, and moved to Oroville in 1995.
She attended high school in Medford and attended college in Portland, OR.
Jackie was a homemaker and loving mother. She will be remembered mostly for her natural artistic talent and fun-loving, delightful, charismatic personality Survivors include her children, Jason Williams, 17, Bryan Williams, 15 and Sarah Williams, 14 all of Chico, CA; her mother and step-father, Jan and Mike Stagner, of Longview, WA; her father, Fred Hansen; her sister, Julie Hansen of Vancouver, WA; her brother, Eric Hansen of Medford; one uncle in Branson, MO; one cousin of Lacy, IL; a niece in Vancouver, WA; and a nephew of Medford. She was preceded in death by her Maternal Grandparents, Milo and Lillian Hogenson, former residents of Duluth, Minnesota and Rockford, IL in 1995.
