Bob Bate
We lost a fine man on December 5, 2003. Bob Bate, born on September 14, 1947 in the small town of Boyntonville NY, passed away this Friday at the age of 56 at his home near Eagle Point. Although he had been plagued by serious medical issues for some time, he bore his difficulties with humor and courage, even becoming a favorite with the emergency room nurses he saw all too often.
After completing his service in the Air Force during the Vietnam years, Bob married
his perfect woman and began a successful career as a counselor and probation officer. He and Kathie finally settled in our region in 1980. Bob had fun with life. He loved the outdoors, and could usually outfish his buddies, even with his habit of constantly layering and switching bait. He just grinned at the advice to "keep that thing in the water." One service he particularly liked performing for his non-retired friends was to call them at work from his cell phone so they could hear the whine of his line being taken out by something big in the middle of Klamath Lake.
He also loved puttering around the shop, and was known for his ability to fix almost anything with a mix of epoxy, baling wire, and "duck" tape. Especially duck tape. His friends say he had uses for duck tape that the manufacturers couldn't even conceive of. He wasn't that great at finish work though, and once used a 12-gauge to open up a hole for a drainage pipe in a hunting camp trailer.
Bob wasn't shy about what he liked and disliked. In addition to duck tape, fishing, and the outdoors, he liked ice cream (especially Cherry Garcia); "Genny" Cream Ale; being creative with SPAM; yellow Labs; NPR's "Car Talk"; the pet crow he once had who would fly out and meet him on his way home from work; playing around with his tractor; being prepared for any eventuality; Gary Larson's "The Far Side"; and his wonderful wife Kathie. On the other hand, he wasn't at all partial to Maxima fishing line; George W. Bush; barking rat dogs; the "city"; suits (he never owned one); shopping (except at Blackbird); and being slowed down by his health later in life.
Bob leaves behind his wife Kathie, his brother Bill, nephews Matthew and William, his niece, Alexis, and all those people who had the pleasure of sharing significant parts of their lives with him. He was a good and gentle man, with a quick wit, and we shall miss him. Contributions may be made in memory of Bob Bate for Klamath Basin Projects to Ducks Unlimited, 1101 SE Tech Center Dr., Suite 115, Vancouver, WA 98683. A private service is planned.
