Barbara Ziegler
Barbara Ziegler, 85, of Medford, died Friday (Jan.16, 2004) at Horton Plaza.

In lieu of flowers Barbara's wishes would be for donations to be given to South Pacific Christian Fellowship, 2365 Heritage Way, Medford OR 97504, on behalf of her grandson, John, who is a missionary in New Castle, Austraila and is starting a church there.

Services will be announced in a full obituary at a later date.

Katherine 'Kitty' Barry Baalman
The memorial service for Kitty Baalman, who died January 15, 2004, will be held at 1 p.m., on Saturday, January 24, 2004, at Ashland Bible Church, 400 Dead Indian Memorial Road, Ashland, Oregon. Pastor Nate Shinn will officiate. Interment will be at Ft. Bidwell, California cemetery at a later date.

Kitty was born August 27, 1915, in Lakeview, Oregon, to Nicholas Patrick Barry and Eolus Lofftus Barry. She was a granddaughter of James Kane Barry of Rockchapel, Newmarket, County Cork, Ireland, and Katherine O'Connor Barry, of San Francisco, who were pioneers in the Lakeview area, and of Christopher Columbus Lofftus of Warner Valley, Oregon (formerly of Ashland, Oregon) and Edith Ewell Brown of Ft. Bidwell, California. James Kane Barry, along with three of his brothers, were instrumental in bringing most of the original Irish settlers to Lake County, Oregon, beginning in 1877.

On June 1, 1941 in Reno, Nevada, she married Eugene Henry Baalman, who died November 16, 1998.

Kitty grew up at Adel, Oregon, attended elementary school there and attended high school in Lakeview. She was the Lakeview Rodeo Queen in 1933. She received her Bachelor's Degree from Southern Oregon College, Ashland, Oregon and her Master's Degree from Syracuse University, Syracuse, New York. She served on the Governor's Task Force for Special Education, and assisted in the development of the Special Education Program in the State of Oregon. The majority of her career was spent teaching in the Special Education Program in the Josephine County School District in Grants Pass, Oregon.

She had many hobbies. She was an accomplished horsewoman, an avid reader, and a story writer. She also loved to garden and cook.

After her retirement, Kitty and Eugene moved to Ft. Bidwell, California where they were active in the local church and civic activities. They returned to Medford, Oregon in 1997 due to poor health.

She is survived by a son, Nicholas A. "Tony" Baalman, Sr. of Talent; a daughter, Judith Shiron of Portland; grandchildren Jolinda Baker of Lynnwood, Washington, J. Richard Baalman of Monroe, Washington, Nicholas Baalman, Jr.of Talent, and Michele Marthaller of Portland; six great-grandchildren; sisters, Nellie Jane Barry Herringer of Clarksburg, California and Betty Barry Fletcher of Spokane, Washington; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by sisters. Ruth Eolus Barry Cox, and Edith Barry; brothers Robert James Barry, Nicholas Lofftus Barry, and Franklin Duane Barry.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make a contribution in Kitty's memory to Ashland Bible Church, 400 Dead Indian Memorial Road, Ashland, Oregon.

Nellie Sue Oliveira
Sept. 17, 1946 - Jan. 17, 2004 Nellie Sue Oliveira, 57, of Eagle Point, passed away in Medford on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004. Recitation of the Rosary will take place at Sacred Heart Catholic Church today (Tuesday) at 6 p.m.. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2004 at 10 a.m. at Eastwood cemetery Mausoleum in Medford. Pastor John Mack, Nellie's brother-in-law, will officiate. Entombment will follow there.

Nellie was born Sept. 17, 1946 in Crescent City, CA. She married John V. Oliveira, Sr. on December 12, 1965 in San Jose, CA. They moved from there to the Rogue Valley in 1971.

Mrs. Oliveira worked as foreman in the paper mill. Prior to that, she was a beautician for many years and owned her own shop in California. She loved science fiction movies and shows and spending time with family.

Survivors include her husband, John V. Oliveira of Eagle Point, OR; son and daughter-in-law, John V., Jr. and Stacie Oliveira of Eagle Point; daughter and son-in-law, Joann and Brian Reed of Central Point; sister and brother-in-law, Fran and John Mack of Medford; and three grandchildren.

Pauline F. Griffin
Pauline F. Griffin, 73, of Shady Cove, died Friday, January 16, 2004 at her home.

No memorial service is planned.

Mrs. Griffin was born February 9, 1931 to Joseph and Hannah Gabree in Boston, Massachusetts.

On June 15, 1985 in Amesbury, Massachusetts, she married John F. Griffin who survives.

She had been in the Rogue Valley since 1999. Her hobbies included gardening, woodwork, crafts and antiques.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by 7 sons, Paul of Shady Cove, Mark of Avon, NY, Joel of Rochester, NH, Ben of Buckfield, ME, Glen of Eagle Point, OR, Jon of Glendona, CA, and Tim of Concord, NH; 1 daughter, Lona Gabree Dupree of Eagle Point, OR; 1 brother, Joseph Gabree; 2 sisters, Helen of Tampa, FL and Leonore of Epping, NH; 20 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.

Memorial contributions may be made to Shady Cove Senior Citizens Center or Shady Cove Senior Citizens Thrift Shop.

Barbara Jean Carnes
Barbara Jean Carnes, 68, of Ashland died Wednesday (Jan. 14, 2004) at Merle West Medical Center in Klamath Falls. There will be a funeral service at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004 at The Family Life Bible Church, Sixth and C Streets, Ashland. A graveside service will follow at Scenic Hills cemetery, Ashland.

Mrs. Carnes was born on Dec. 26, 1935 in Percell, OK to Vernon and Ruby (Williams) Plaster.

In 1951, in Corona, California she married George Carnes, who survives.

Mrs. Carnes had been a homemaker during her life.

She was a member of the Choctaw Tribe of Oklahoma.

Mrs. Carnes enjoyed ceramics and cake baking. She was always very active in her church and had taught Sunday school for many years.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her son, Vince Carnes of Ashland, OR; her daughter Jeannie Chapman of Ashland; two sisters, Sandy Van der Linden of Hemet, CA. and Estene Standback of Graham, Texas; and five grandchildren.

Harl M. White
The funeral service for Harl Merlin White will be at 1:30 p.m., Monday, January 19, 2004 at the Conger-Morris Medford Chapel with John Burns of the Central Point Masonic Lodge officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Medford.

Mr. White, 85, of The Applegate, died Thursday (Jan. 15, 2004) at his home. He was born Feb. 13, 1918 in Alva, Oklahoma to Harmon Harlan and Lulu (Merklin) White. On Feb. 14, 1939 in Yreka, California, he married Leila Oliver, who survives.

Mr. White was a long haul truck driver. He had lived in the Rogue Valley since 1933, moving here from New Mexico. He was a member of Howard Lodge #37 Free & Accepted Masons in Yreka, CA, the Scottish Rite, and Shrine BenAli Temple of Sacramento, CA. He enjoyed gold mining and repairing antique books.

Survivors besides his wife, Leila, include his son, Harlan White of Canyonville; two daughters, Linda McClellan of Gold Hill, and Eva Daley of The Applegate; a sister, Wanda Crowl of Grants Pass; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandson.

Hugh W. Littlebury, Sr.
Hugh Watson Littlebury, Sr., "Mr. Magnificent, " 83, of Medford, died Monday, January 12, 2004 at his home.

A memorial service will be held at the Ashland Masonic Lodge #23, 570 Clover Lane, Ashland, Wednesday, January 21, 2004 at 2 p.m. Jeanne Fornier will officiate. A private family committal service will be held at Eagle Point National cemetery.

Mr. Littlebury was born April 5, 1920 to Hugh H. and Sarah (Slattery) Littlebury in Detroit, Michigan. Mr. Littlebury served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean Conflict, achieving the rank of Airplane Electrician Master Chief.

On May 29, 1982 in Phoenix, AZ, he married the former M. Marie Bannister, who survives.

He had been in the Rogue Valley for the past 12 years, moving here from Riverside, California. Mr. Littlebury had been a Business Manager for Aeroquip Manufacturing in San Diego, and also had worked for John Noble Realtors in Phoenix, AZ.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, and Shiners for many years. He was a past member of the American Legion. He was a dedicated piano player for the Medford Senior Center for over 10 years.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by 3 sons, Hugh Littlebury, Jr. of Gilbert, Arizona, and Neil and Carl Mahr of Thousand Oaks, CA; 2 daughters, Arienne Tower of Virginia Beach, VA, and Dianna Russell, Bakersfield, CA; 1 brother, George Littlebury of Northport, MI; 11 grandchildren and 19 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by 1 sister.

Memorial contributions may be made to: Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children, 3101 S.W. Sam Jackson Park Road, Portland, OR 97201.

Iva Pearl Plummer
Graveside services for Iva Pearl Plummer will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, at Eagle Point National cemetery. Rev. Paul Hagedorn will officiate.

Mrs. Plummer, 90, of Central Point, died Thursday (Jan. 15, 2004) at Providence Medford Medical Center.

She was born on Dec. 28, 1913 in Greenville, Texas, to Alexander and Martha Lutz Brown. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1988 from Reno, NV.

Mrs. Plummer enjoyed gardening, reading, and watching game shows.

Survivors include; three sons, Harold Stewart of San Antonio, Texas, Robert Stewart of Atlanta, GA, and Richard Stewart of Whittier, CA; a daughter, Anita Matime of New Orleans, LA; 12 grandsons; six granddaughters; 28 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Betty Henderson in 1990.

Jerry James Copeland
Jerry James Copeland 57, died of cancer in his Chico, CA home at 5:30 a.m., January 10, 2004.

A resident of Central Point, OR from 1980 to 1992. He married Dorothy Jean Thomasson in 1966. Jerry was transferred to Medford in 1980 with McMahan's Furniture. In 1990 Jerry began work at Joseph Winans Furniture in Medford, until moving back to Chico in 1992. He returned to work for McMahan's managing their La-z-boy gallery in Chico in 1998.

Jerry was a loving devoted husband and enjoyed spoiling his grandchildren. He always looked forward to spending time with family on vacation.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Dorothy of Chico; son, Lt. Jerrymar Copeland and his wife, Susan of Travis AFB; daughter, Shanda Nudelman and her husband, Steve of Livermore, CA; grandchildren, Nick and Sierra Copeland of Travis AFB; and three sisters, Penny Goddard of Caty, TX, Patty Sanders of Corning, CA, and Joyce Copeland of Chico, CA.

Mildred Auberlin
Mildred Auberlin, Servant of the Lord, recent resident of Jacksonville, passed away peacfully on Jan 13, 2004, after a short illness. She was a devoted mother and grandmother to many and her presence among us will be missed. Graveside services will be held on Wed. Jan 21st in Sonoma, California.

Donations in Mrs. Auberlin's name can be made to Calvary Church: Childrens Ministry, P.O. Box 117, Jacksonville, Or. 97530 in lieu of flowers.

Barbara Jean Carnes

James D. Wallace
Jan. 7, 1916 - Jan. 6, 2004 James D. Wallace, 87, passed away at his home in Medford, OR on Jan. 6, 2004.

Private inurnment was held at Siskiyou Memorial Park in Medford.

Mr. Wallace was born in Alma, AR on January 7, 1916 to John D. and Nora (Easterly) Wallace. He was an iron worker in the steel industry.

Survivors include his daughter, Emily Maria Wallace Caliendo and family of Florida; granddaughters, Tina Jarjoura, Giovannina and Alessandra Caliendo; two great grandchildren, Jacob and Emily Jarjoura; son, John Sims of Pinault, WA; grandsons, Jerry Sims of Ft. Worth, TX, Dale Sims of Kalalock, WA, Kurt Sims of Atlanta, GA; and granddaughter, Lisa Disalvatore of Malden, MA.

Pearl A. Woods
Former Ashland resident, Pearl A. Woods, 90, of Grants Pass, Oregon, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, January 14, 2004.

Tuesday, January 20, at Litwiller-Simonson Funeral Home in Ashland, there will be a viewing from 11 a.m.- 12:30 p.m. and a memorial service at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Baptist Church of Ashland in her memory.

Pearl was born November 17, 1913 in Rocky Ford, Colorado. She attended high school in Missouri and attended college in Kansas. On March 12, 1938, she married Stewart D. Woods, who survives. They moved from Missouri to northern California the same year they were married .

She worked as a cook in a hospital and in a lumber camp and as a nurse's assistant with special patients in John Day and Prairie City. She also worked part time during World War II nailing ammunition crates. She and her husband, Stewart, moved from John Day to Ashland in 1968. She went back to school and obtained a degree in education and taught in Phoenix, Oregon. She was a loving mother, wife, and later grandmother.

In addition to her husband, survivors include three children, Roy D. Woods of Lacey, WA, Marilynn Waldemar of Hesperia, CA, and Margaret Fern Cunningham of Grants Pass, OR; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Bennie B. King
Private services were held today for Bennie B. King. Mr. King died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2004 in Medford.

Bennie was born Oct. 26, 1903 in Miloy, Iowa, to Laura May and Benton King. He was the youngest child and had 3 sisters. He attended Kansas State College, where he majored in Agriculture. He then moved to southern California, where he owned various dairy and poultry farms.

In 1950, he settled in Chino, CA, where he met his future wife, Helen Freitas. They were married in Glendale, CA on Sept. 27, 1951. Their daughter Laura was born in 1952, and in 1953 the family moved to Ashland where they bought a dairy farm, which they sold in 1959. After a brief return to southern California, they moved to Medford, where they owned and operated the Table Rock Dairy. In 1967, they sold the farm and built a house on part of the acreage, where they lived until 1971 when they moved to their present home. Mr. King was a farmer and a dairyman his entire working life and kept a small farm on Madrona Lane where he raised a few cattle and kept a small orchard until he was in his 70's.

Mr. King has been an avid fisherman, and the Rogue River and Diamond Lake are among his favorite fishing spots. He has also been an active member of the First Christian Church and Life Member of Ashland Elks Lodge #944.

He is survived by his wife, Helen of Medford, and daughter, Laura Lynn King of Portland.

Memorial contributions may be made to Jackson County Outreach Program for Seniors and Homebound, 413 W. Main St., Medford, OR 97501.

Betty Workman
The funeral service for Betty Workman will be 1 p.m., Wednesday, January 14, 2004 at Hillcrest Chapel, 2201 N. Phoenix Rd., Medford, with Pastor Ron McKay of the Ruch Community Bible Church officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Memorial contributions may be made to Providence Hospice, 1660 E. McAndrews Rd., Medford, OR 97504.

Mrs. Workman, 83, of Jacksonville, died Sunday (Jan. 11, 2004) at her home. She was born May 24, 1920 in Crowley, Colorado to Michael and Elizabeth Heidt. On February 21, 1942 in Reno, Nevada, she married Merle Workman, who died Jan. 23, 2002.

She came to the Rogue Valley 27 years ago after retiring from their liquor store business in Colton, CA. She was a member of the Daughters of America.

Survivors include her daughter, Pat Stevens of Jacksonville; a step-son, Jack Carter of Gardnerville, NV; three grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.
