James Howard Burcham
James Howard Burcham, 75, of Central Point, died Thursday (May 29, 2003) at his home. A private service will be held.

He was born Feb. 12, 1928, in Naples, Idaho, to Henry and Opal Burcham. On Aug. 12, 1972, in Reno, Nev., he married
Barbara Lynch, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1997 from Texas.
Mr. Burcham was a commercial carpenter, installing acoustic tile.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Mr. Burcham was a member of the Josephine County Stroke Club, Lions Club of Grants Pass, Providence Hospital Guild, and Rogue River Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). He also served as post chaplain and as a volunteer at Providence Adult Day Health Center.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a daughter, Patti Rae Dixon, in West Virginia; a son, John Lynch, in Washington; a sister, Dorothy Porter, in Washington; a brother, Gerald, in California; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Harriet Fenton.

Marguerite ‘Babe’ Atkins
Marguerite "Babe" Atkins, 90, of Medford, died Wednesday (May 28, 2003) at Providence Medford Medical Center. No service is planned.
Among her survivors is a son, William N. Kime, Oregon City.

Ingrid Rosalye Kurz
The memorial service for Ingrid Rosalye Kurz will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Central Point Assembly of God. Pastor Scott Covey will officiate.
Mrs. Kurz, 94, of White City, died Tuesday (May 27, 2003) at her home.

She was born Ingrid Jardstrom on June 4, 1908, in Greenwood, Calif. On June 1, 1944, in Carson City, Nev., she married
George Kurz, who died in 1953. She lived in the Rogue Valley from 1945 to 1973, when she moved to Myrtle Creek. She returned to the Rogue Valley in 1999.
Mrs. Kurz was a waitress at the Center Cafe in Central Point for many years. She later owned and operated the Bun and Run Cafe in Central Point for two years.
She was a member of Central Point Assembly of God.
Mrs. Kurz enjoyed knitting, quilting, cooking and gardening.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary E. Floate, White City; three sons, George Kurz, White City, Clayton "Clay" Brown, Central Point, and Dennis Brown, Roseburg; a brother, Bernie Sjorland, Manchester, Calif.; four sisters, Jean Remsted, Eagle Point, Betty Manley, Eugene, and Ivy Crowther and Gerta Permenter, both Fort Bragg, Calif.; 14 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Bob Brown and Norman Kurz.

Elmer ‘Ernie’ Wigget Sr.
The memorial service for Elmer "Ernie" Wigget Sr. will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Eagle Point National cemetery Interment Shelter. Pastor Greg Phillips of the Seventh-day Adventist Church will officiate.
Mr. Wigget, 71, of Medford, died Wednesday (May 28, 2003) at Medford Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center.

He was born June 24, 1931, in Montrose, Colo., to Ira and Ruby Wigget. On Aug. 17, 1950, in Roseburg, he married
Verda Lee Carson, who survives. They moved to Grants Pass in 1958 from Waco, Texas. They lived in Grants Pass until 1979 when they moved to Dairy. They moved to Medford in 1986.
Mr. Wigget worked as a maintenance man in service stations. He was also a truck driver until his retirement in 1998.
He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1950 to 1953.
Mr. Wigget was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Medford.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Ernie Jr., Klamath Falls; three daughters, Debbie Frederick, Redlands, Calif., Susie Piper, Tangent, and Cindy Hamel, Klamath Falls; a brother, Leslie Dale, La Pine; two sisters, Mary Ellen Eller, Greenacres, Wash., and Millie Pellerin, Eugene; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Harold and Cleo.

Margaret ‘Penny’ Gail
The funeral for Margaret "Penny" Gail will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Perl Funeral Home at Siskiyou Memorial Park, Medford.
Mrs. Gail, 87, of Medford, died Wednesday (May 28, 2003) at Medford Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center.
She was born Margaret Eleanor Pennington on May 23, 1916, in Eugene, to Lawrence and Ella Myrtle Pennington. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1923 from Eugene and graduated from Medford High School in 1934. On Aug. 16, 1934, in Medford, she married
Budd W. Gail, who preceded her in death.
Mrs. Gail was a homemaker who enjoyed gardening and spending time with her family and friends.
Survivors include three sons, Jim, Ashland, Tom, Newberg, and Dewey, Charlotte, N.C.; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Marjorie E. Conger
The memorial service for Marjorie E. Conger will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Christ Unity Church in Medford.
Mrs. Conger, 87, of White City, died May 14, 2003, at her home.

Pearl Cantrall
The funeral for Pearl Cantrall will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Conger-Morris Medford Chapel.
Mrs. Cantrall, 93, formerly of Jacksonville, died Wednesday (May 28, 2003) in Medford. Private interment will be in Jacksonville cemetery.

She was born Aug. 19, 1909, in Hannah, N.D., to Albert and Dina (Horn) Hewitt. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1941. On June 24, 1972, in Jacksonville, she married
Harlan Miles Cantrall, who died in 1991.
Mrs. Cantrall volunteered time to the Blind Association for more than 30 years.
She was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Jacksonville, the Royal Neighbors, and the Applegate and Central Point Granges.
Survivors include two sons, Harold Jordon, Alturas, Calif., and David Jordon, Covington, Tenn.; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by a sister.

Glendon Kale ‘Jeff’ Jefferies
Glendon Kale "Jeff" Jefferies, 83, of Medford, died Wednesday (May 28, 2003) in Medford. A private memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Eagle Point National cemetery. Pastors Scott Dalgarno and Bill Kirkham of the First Presbyterian Church in Ashland will officiate. Inurnment will be in Eagle Point National cemetery.

He was born Jan. 24, 1920, in Paisley, to Charles A. and Melva (Lewis) Jefferies. He attended Paisley public schools and received a bachelor’s degree in forest management from Oregon State University. On Aug. 5, 1945, in Irvington, N.J., he married
Norma Jean Shoemaker, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1961, and have lived in Ashland for 36 years.
Mr. Jefferies worked for the U.S. Forest Service from 1947 to 1980. He was the District Ranger in the Ashland Ranger District from 1961 to 1980.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1941 to 1947, achieving the rank of captain.
Mr. Jefferies was a 33rd-degree Scottish Rite Mason. He was active in many lodges including Ashland Lodge No. 23, where he was a life member and Past Master; Warren Lodge No. 10 in Jacksonville, Grand Lodge of A.F. & A.M. of Oregon, where he served as Grand Master from 1987 to 1988; and Siskiyou Chapter No. 21, RAM, where he was a life member and Past High Priest. He also served on the YMCA Board, United Way Board, in the Lions Club, and in Toastmasters.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Ashland, where he served as Elder and Deacon.
He is survived by his wife, Norma Jane Jefferies of Medford.

She was born Sept. 26, 1912, in Medford, to Wilbur and Helen (Quackenbush) Kime. She attended Griffin Creek and Medford schools.
Mrs. Atkins was a homemaker and lifelong Rogue Valley resident.
She enjoyed people, traveling, reading and playing cards.
Survivors include two sisters, Hazel M. Nyberg, Medford, and Remo L. Wilson, Oakridge; four brothers, Gerald E. Kime, Central Point, John J. Kime, Rogue River/Las Vegas, Ralph F. Kime, Medford, and Richard R. Kime, Soldotna, Alaska; four grandchildren; and many great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three husbands, Luther Riggs, Wilson Clark, and Curtis Atkins; a son, Glenn L. Riggs; and a sister, Mary Kime.

Lois Kathleen Roberts
Lois Kathleen Roberts, 89, of Medford, died Monday (May 26, 2003) at Providence Medford Medical Center. No service is planned.
She was born Jan. 9, 1914, in South Dakota, to Lester and Olive Howell. On April 21, 1933, in the San Fernando Valley in Southern California, she married
William F. Roberts, who died in 1994.
Mrs. Roberts was a homemaker. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1986 from Reno, Nev.
Survivors include a son, David, Medford; a daughter, Marion F. Greenamyer, Jacksonville; two sisters, Arloween Oren and Ruth Dean, both Southern California; a brother, Bob Howell, in Southern California; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by a brother; and two sisters.

Ray W. Buck
Ray W. Buck, 83, formerly of the Rogue Valley, died May 22, 2003, at Redlands Health Care Center in California. A private service will be held.
He was born Oct. 11, 1919, in Denver, to Lyman and Vernie Buck. The family moved to the Arizona desert, where he grew up.
Mr. Buck moved to Central Point in 1961 and worked for the Miller Freeman Publishing Company and at Ken’s Barbershop in the Sears Shopping Center. He retired to Yucaipa, Calif., in the early 1980s.
He served with the Army Air Forces from 1943 to 1945. Based in England, he completed 28 missions aboard the B-17 Flying Fortress in the 94th bomber group. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in 1944.
Mr. Buck was a Mason.
He enjoyed the desert, fishing the Colorado River, rock hunting and the Pacific Ocean.
Survivors include his wife, Elaine, Yucaipa, Calif.; two daughters, Patricia LeBaron and Jeanne Ames, both of the Rogue Valley; a brother, Ben, Yucaipa, Calif.; a sister Pearl Clark, Yucaipa, Calif.; and two granddaughters.

Gerald ‘Jerry’ Mattern
Gerald "Jerry" "Rusty" Mattern, 64, of Grants Pass, died Sunday (May 25, 2003) at his home. The memorial service will be held at a later date in Grants Pass. Private interment will be at Hawthorne Memorial Gardens in Grants Pass.

He was born Nov. 9, 1938, in Burwell, Neb. He lived in Butte Falls and Central Point before moving to Grants Pass in 1958.
Mr. Mattern worked for Oregon Tire for a few years. He later worked as a machinist and owned and operated A-1 Machine Shop on Dowell Road in Grants Pass.
An animal lover, he enjoyed wildlife, especially tigers, his three cats, Tawny, Missy and Mickey, and his dog, Honey Girl. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and boating.
Survivors include his sister, Beverly Curtis, Southbeach.

Marie Violet Soderlund
The memorial service for Marie Violet Soderlund will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Hillcrest Chapel, Medford. Her brother, the Rev. Jim Fraley, retired, of Eugene, will officiate. Inurnment will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Medford.
Mrs. Soderlund, 78, of Central Point, died Friday (May 23, 2003) at Hearthstone in Medford.
She was born Sept. 27, 1924, in Portland, to Solomon and Pearl (Warrick) Fraley. She lived in the Rogue Valley most of her life. Her first husband, Stanley B. Shafer, died in 1974. On July 1, 1976, in Medford, she married
Loren F. Soderlund, who died in 2000.
Mrs. Soderlund worked for Medford School District for 32 years, retiring as office manager at South Medford High School.
Survivors include a son, Stanley "Tom" Shafer, Medford; two sisters, Naomi Wood, Medford, and Joyce Bradford, Eugene; a brother, Jim Fraley, Eugene; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Robert ‘Bobby’ R. Gassaway
The memorial service for Robert "Bobby" Roy Gassaway will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Chapel of the Valley Funeral Home in Grants Pass. Pastor Brett Garrett of Medford Friends Church will officiate. Inurnment will be at Hawthorne Memorial Gardens in Grants Pass.
Mr. Gassaway, 55, of Glendale, died Friday (May 23, 2003) at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Roseburg.
He was born May 15, 1948, in Mount Shasta, Calif. On May 8, 1994, in Grants Pass, he married
Cheri Alvarez, who survives.
Mr. Gassaway was a water operator for the city of Glendale until a disability forced his retirement.
He served in the U.S. Army, then joined the Navy. He served during the Vietnam War.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include four daughters, Trista Beckett and Lori Rainwater, both Grants Pass, Tianna Laird, Seattle, and Amity Gassaway, in Idaho; his father, Billy, Roseburg; a brother, John, Walla Walla, Wash.; and 10 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother, Alice Standiford; and a brother, Mike.
