Paul Thomas Bettencourt
Paul Thomas Bettencourt, 74, of Rogue River, died Sunday (June 8, 2003) at Three Rivers Community Hospital. No service is planned.

He was born June 17, 1928, in Livermore, Calif. On Oct. 31, 1949, in Livermore, he married
Lois J. Birdsell, who survives. They moved to Rogue River in 1989 from Auburn, Calif.
Mr. Bettencourt worked for Hexcel in Livermore, for 32 years, retiring in 1981.
He was raised Catholic and was a member of Our Lady of the River Catholic Community in Rogue River.
Mr. Bettencourt enjoyed hunting, traveling, cutting firewood and building things, including a waterfall on his property.
Survivors in addition to his wife, include two daughters, Paula Horn, Davis, Calif., and Debbie Loverde, Redding, Calif.; a son, James, Lake Fort, Calif.; two brothers, Hank, Livermore, and Bill, Auburn, Calif.; a sister, Helen Dickinson, Livermore, six granddaughters; and one great- grandson.

David Ralph Wood
David Ralph Wood, 77, of Grants Pass, died Thursday (June 12, 2003) at Royale Gardens Health and Rehabilitation in Grants Pass. Private interment will be at Hawthorne Memorial Gardens in Grants Pass.
He was born Feb. 4, 1926, in Havre, Mont. His family moved to Grants Pass in 1932 from Montana. On March 8, 1947, in Reno, Nev., he married
Virginia Wilson, who survives.
Mr. Wood was a log truck driver prior to retirement. After retirement, he owned and operated a small sawmill in Williams.
He enjoyed fishing and pitching horseshoes.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Chris, Prairie City; a brother, John R., Provolt; and two sisters, Edith Mendenhall, Fortuna, Calif., and Annabelle Dahl, Grants Pass; and one granddaughter.

Joel Brewster Norris
The memorial and burial service for Joel Brewster Norris will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Siskiyou Memorial Park, Medford.
Mr. Norris, 62, of Rogue River, died Nov. 21, 2002, in Orange, Calif.
He was born Feb. 25, 1940, in Los Angeles, to Joseph and Thresa Norris. He graduated from El Monte High School in El Monte, Calif., in 1959. He lived in Rogue River from the early 1970s until his death. On Sept. 28, 2002, in Grants Pass, he married
Marvine Harper, who survives.
Mr. Norris owned Norris Distributing for 30 years, distributing Pepperidge Farm products throughout Southern Oregon.
He was an active member of the Rogue Valley Street Rods and the Southern Oregon Horse Racing Association (SOHRA).
Mr. Norris enjoyed fishing, hunting, classic cars and horse racing.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three sons, Michael, Rogue River, Joel, Anchorage, Alaska, and Richard, Federal Way, Wash.; two daughters, Erica Norris, Rogue River, and Lisa Alpert, in California; a brother, Robert, in North Carolina; a sister, Roberta Toll, Tustin, Calif.; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Jeffrey.

Wiley Knighten Wisner
The funeral for Wiley Knighten Wisner will be 11 a.m. Friday at Conger-Morris Central Point Chapel. The Rev. Charles Christopher of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church will officiate. The graveside service will be at 2:30 p.m. at Roseburg Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Lawrence Crumb will officiate.
Mr. Wisner, 83, of Central Point, died Saturday, May 17, 2003, at Greggs Foster Care Home due to complications from a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease.

He was born March 5, 1920, in Grangeville, Idaho, to Irvine Ray and Ella (Hansen) Wisner. On April 21, 1945, in Klamath Falls, he married
Margaret Ann "Midge" Matthews, who died in 1983. He lived in Roseburg and Klamath Falls before settling in Medford in 1960.
Mr. Wisner began his career with COPCO in 1945 and continued to work for PP&L; until his retirement as a line foreman in 1982, after working for the company for 37 years. He was an instrumental part of the underground power program, and was an inspector on the Jim Bridger Power Plant in Rawlins, Wyo. in 1971 and Libby Dam Power Plant in Libby, Mont., in 1972.
During World War II, he served as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific.
Mr. Wisner did volunteer work transporting cancer patients for treatment in the 1980s. He was a member of IBEW Local No. 659, and a lifetime member of Medford B.P.O.E. No. 1168.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling and spending time with his family. From 1997-2002 he attended Providence Adult Day Care Center where he was considered an amateur furniture restorer, a gardener, and a jokester.
Survivors include a daughter, Debra K. Miles, Central Point; four brothers, Arthur, Hermiston, Irvin and Jack, both Winston, and Rollie Sullivan, Eugene; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters and four brothers.
Friends may pay their respects from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Conger-Morris, Central Point Chapel.
Hazel English Kennerly
The graveside service for Hazel English Kennerly will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Medford. A celebration of her life will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the First Church of the Nazarene in Medford. Her nephew, Pastor Ed Bigby, will officiate.
Mrs. Kennerly, 87, of Eagle Point, died Monday (May 19, 2003) at her home.
She was born May 17, 1916, in Hanson, Okla., to Ernest Franks and Esther Fletcher (Sutton) Dodson. In 1936, she married
Opal English. In 1984, in Medford, she married
Aldon "Jim" Clark Kennerly, who survives.
Mrs. Kennerly was a homemaker. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1989 from Oklahoma.
She was known for her Southern cooking and enjoyed reading her Bible.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a son, Jerry English, Fresno, Calif.; two sisters, Helen Spencer, Medford, and Esther "Tessie" Smith, Vancouver, Wash.; a brother, Ernest Franks Dodson Jr., Gold Hill; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Wanda English Katzenbach.

Lois Pearl Hodgson
The graveside service for Lois Pearl Hodgson will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Siskiyou Memorial Park in Medford. Pastor Web Staunton of Applegate Christian Fellowship will officiate.
Mrs. Hodgson, 88, of Medford, died Sunday (May 18, 2003) at her home.

She was born April 4, 1915, in Randolph, Mo., to Thomas and Elmina Powell. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1924 from Grand Junction, Colo. On Sept. 10, 1929, in Roseburg, she married
James Wilford Hodgson, who died in 2002.
Mrs. Hodgson worked as a pear packer.
She was a member of Applegate Christian Fellowship.
Mrs. Hodgson enjoyed fishing, camping, gardening and restoring dolls.
Survivors include two daughters, Janet Denise Sneed, Medford, and Meldene Jeanette Phillips, Kelso, Wash.; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by five brothers, three sisters, one grandchild and one great-grandchild.

Wilmer Bailey
The funeral for Wilmer Bailey will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Perl Funeral Home at Siskiyou Memorial Park.
Mr. Bailey, 94, of Medford, died Wednesday (May 21, 2003) at his home.

Richard Allen Goff
The memorial service for Richard Allen Goff will be at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Cotton Memorial area of Lithia Park in Ashland.
Mr. Goff, 90, of Ashland, died April 28, 2003, at Linda Vista Care Center, Ashland.
Velma Bigelow Johnson
Velma Bigelow Johnson, 100, formerly of Phoenix and Medford, died May 12, 2003, at a convalescent hospital in Stockton, Calif. No local service is planned. A graveside service will be held in a family cemetery in Coos County when weather permits.
She was born March 15, 1903, in Stockton, Calif., to Wells E. and Nellie Wakefield Bigelow. The family moved to Oregon in 1903, where she was raised on a ranch in Coos County. On Dec. 25, 1921, she married
Charles F. Johnson, who preceded her in death.
Mrs. Johnson lived most of her life in Oregon, where she was a homemaker and baker. She retired form Rogue Valley Memorial Hospital in Medford in 1974, after 17 years.
She was a member of the Church of Christ in Phoenix and Phoenix Grange No. 779, where she held several chairs and was H.E.C. Chairman for several years. She was also a member and past president of the Phoenix Garden Club. After selling her home, she moved to Atascadero, Calif., in 1985, to live with her son Robert and his wife, Frances, who now live in Stockton, Calif.
Survivors include a son, Robert C., Stockton, Calif.; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Genevieve; two brothers and a sister.

Elizabeth Frances Kilby
Elizabeth Frances Kilby, 83, of Salem, formerly of Medford, died Friday (May 16, 2003). No service is planned.
She was born Jan. 13, 1920, in Aberdeen, S.D., to William and Ester(McAfee) Campbell. She received a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts from Park College in Missouri. She married
Patrick W. Kilby, who preceded her in death.
Mrs. Kilby was the office manager for her husband’s insurance company, and a homemaker.
She enjoyed gardening and spending time with her family and neighbors.
Survivors include two sons, Patrick, Eugene, and Ferrin D., Greeley, Colo.; a daughter, Maureen E. Dunphy, Corinth, Miss.; a brother, Lowell ‘Mick" Campbell, Denver; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Fred M. Pierce
Fred M. Pierce, 82, of Gold Hill, died Saturday (May 17, 2003) at his home. No service is planned.

He was born Oct. 25, 1920, in Los Angeles, to Fred and Elizabeth Pierce. In May 1942, in Los Angeles, he married
Phyllis Ann Robbins, who died in 1989. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1979 from Los Altos, Calif.
Mr. Pierce was a private pilot. He was a member of a Barber Shop quartet, was an avid reader and enjoyed spending time with his family.
Survivors include a son, Michael, in Washington; two daughters, Patricia Humiston, Gold Hill, and Christine Anido, Sacramento, Calif.; a sister, Lorraine Strathdee, Carmichael, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Eva Jane Humphrey
The graveside service for Eva Jane Humphrey will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Scenic Hills Memorial Park in Ashland.
Mrs. Humphrey, 83, of Medford, died May 19, 2003, at the Medford Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center.
She was born Dec. 25, 1919, in Muskogee, Okla. In Oklahoma, she married
Elzie Humphrey, who died in 1965.
She moved to Phoenix from Stockton, Calif., in 1961 and worked as a cook in medical facilities.
Survivors include four daughters, Helma Keeney, White City; Helen Herron, Stockton; Margaret Greenlee, Nicholasville, Ky.; and Betty Humphrey, Fort Collins, Colo.; one son, Roy Humphrey, Redmond, Wash.; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Mabel M. Powell
The graveside service for Mabel M. Powell will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Stearns cemetery in Talent.
Mrs. Powell, 83, of Medford, died Friday (May 23, 2003) at Northridge Center in Medford.
She was born Jan. 8, 1920, in Olive Hill, Ky., the daughter of Margaret and Arthur Shelton.
Mrs. Powell moved from Olive Hill to Santa Cruz, Calif., in 1947 and to Medford in 1995.
She enjoyed writing poetry and crocheting.
Survivors include two sons, Robert Powell, Talent, and Don Powell, La Grande; and one grandson.
She was preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters.

James William Berg
The memorial service for James William Berg will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Hillcrest Chapel in Medford. Lee Gregory, a Medford pastor, will officiate.
Mr. Berg, 58, of Medford, died Saturday (May 24, 2003) at Medford Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center.

He was born Nov. 28, 1944, in Santa Cruz, Calif.
On Jan. 28, 1968, in Carson City, Nev., he married
Cheryl Anne Perko, who survives. They moved from Santa Cruz to the Rogue Valley in 1999.
He worked as a sheetrock and dry-wall hanger in Santa Cruz.
Mr. Berg was a member of the American Association of Retired Persons, American Cancer Society and National Rifle Association. He enjoyed fishing, hiking, riding motorcycles and reading.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three sons, Ted J. Berg, Medford; Peter M. Berg, Oregon; and Jeffrey A. Berg, Reno, Nev.; one daughter, Lana Gail Bobick, Reno; his mother, Marye Gail (Horn) Berg, Klamath Falls; one brother, John Berg, Klamath Falls; two sisters, Pamela Berg, Klamath Falls, and Stephanie Phillips, Aptos, Calif.; and four grandchildren.
