Alvin James Killam
Alvin James Killam, 90, of O’Brien, formerly of the Applegate, died July 3, 2003, at his home. A private celebration of his life was held at his home.

He was born March 5, 1913, in Valparaiso, Ind., to Alvin Warren Killam and Mary Kathryn Tunison. On April 9, 1936, in Salmon, Idaho, he married
Cora Daisy Town, who survives. He moved to the Illinois Valley in 1978 from the Applegate.
Mr. Killam was a gold miner on the Salmon River in Idaho for two years, worked in a copper mine in Mountain City, Nev., and at Boeing in Seattle during World War II. After the war, he moved to Forks of Salmon, Calif., where he mined for gold and began his career as a heavy equipment operator with the Bureau of Public Roads Department. In 1958-59, he went to Iran to train people to build roads and maintain equipment. He retired in 1976 and traveled for two years.
In 1978, he settled in O’Brien, where he was a volunteer with the Illinois Valley Fire Department from 1983 until 1993.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three sons, Gordon, Libby, Mont., Star, Lebanon, and Hormoz, O’Brien; two daughters, Lynette Owley, Renton, Wash., and Cynthia Smith, O’Brien; a brother, Marvin Killam, and a sister, Lynette Bellmore, both Libby, Mont.; 19 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Leonard James Blacklock
The graveside service for Leonard James Blacklock will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Eagle Point National cemetery. Pastor Jim Roberts of Wolf Creek Alliance Community Church will officiate.
Mr. Blacklock, 83, of Sunny Valley, died Friday (June 13, 2003) at his home.
He was born May 14, 1920, in Hollister, Calif. On May 25, 1941, in Reno, Nev., he married
Barbara Noland, who died in 2002. They moved to Sunny Valley in 1975 from Modesto, Calif.
Mr. Blacklock served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He enjoyed farming, gardening and traveling.
Survivors include a daughter, Glenda Lenora Allen, Clovis, Calif.; a son, James Edward, Grants Pass; two brothers, Charles, Alameda, Calif., and Glenn, Albany; two sisters, Lois Ewen, Murphys, Calif., and Joan Frayher, El Cajon, Calif.; four grandchildren; and eight great- grandchildren.

Kenneth Norman Walch
The graveside service for Kenneth Norman Walch will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Memory Gardens Memorial Park in Medford. Pastor Damon McCoy of the First Baptist Church in Central Point will officiate. A potluck will follow at the family home.
Mr. Walch, 73, of Central Point, died Tuesday (June 17, 2003) at his home.

He was born June 23, 1929, in Ashland. On Sept. 4, 1948, in Eagle Point, he married
Margie M. Tant, who survives.
Mr. Walch worked at Tru-Mix for several years, and for Boise Cascade for 18 years, retiring as foreman. He was a lifelong Rogue Valley resident.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Central Point. He enjoyed old cars and belonged to the Rogue Valley Old Timer Car Club.
Mr. Walch enjoyed spending time with his family, hunting, fishing, camping and traveling.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Rodney, White City; a daughter, Lisa Hibberds, White City; two brothers, Leonard, in Texas, and Leslie, in California; four sisters, Maxine Peile and Irene Banes, both Eagle Point, Charlotte Pope, Roseburg, and Adela, Rogue River; eight grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Patricia Susan Baker
The memorial service for Patricia Susan Baker will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Hillcrest Mortuary, Medford.
Miss Baker, 43, of Medford, died Sunday (June 15, 2003) in Medford.

Ruth E. Hutchins
The memorial service for Ruth E. Hutchins will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the First Church of the Nazarene in Medford. Private interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Medford.
Mrs. Hutchins, 74, of Medford, died Sunday (June 15, 2003) in Ashland.
She was born March 15, 1929, in Ansley, Neb., to Carlton and Fanny (Hughes) Kiplinger. She graduated from Medford High School. In October 1953, in Medford, she married
Harry P. Hutchins, who died in 1974.
Mrs. Hutchins was a homemaker and a lifetime Rogue Valley resident.
She was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene and enjoyed church activities, sewing, shopping and art.
Survivors include a daughter, Carol Holt, Medford; a son, Darrel D. Sr., Pierre, S.D.; and three sisters, Lois Holroyd, Kirksville, Mo., Ada H. Pruitt, Fairfield, Calif., and Anna Harger, Roseburg. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Cheryl A. Brown; and a sister.

Birl Yarbrough
A celebration of the life of Birl Yarbrough will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church, 15th and I streets, Eureka, Calif.
Mr. Yarbrough, 80, of Eureka, Calif., formerly of Gold Hill, died Thursday (June 12, 2003) at his home.

He was born March 9, 1923, in Success, Ark. He married
Charlotte A. Cope, who survives.
Mr. Yarbrough was the assistant business manager for Northern California District Council of Laborers. He and his wife moved to Gold Hill after his retirement in 1982. He served in the Army Air Forces during World War II, and spent 2½ years in the South Pacific Theater, Philippine Islands and the Northern Solomon Islands.
Mr. Yarbrough was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps, and was on the General Hospital board of directors in the late 1960s. He enjoyed fishing, golf, trips to Reno and traveling.
Survivors in addition to his wife of 29 years, include four sons, Alan Yarbrough, Birl M. Yarbrough, Curtis Clifford and Kelly Clifford; six daughters, Cathy DeNoma, Nancy Cobine, Peggy Gossi, Karen Slotten, Kathy Clifford and Carol Wargo; 29 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy; four brothers, Richard, Dale, Chet and Gerald; and a sister.

Fred D. Mitchell
The graveside service for Fred Daniel Mitchell will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Scenic Hills Memorial Park.
Mr. Mitchell, 89, of Medford, died June 11, 2003, at Medford Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center.
He was born May 12, 1914, in Wright City, Okla., to Carrie and Dan Mitchell, and was raised in Oklahoma. He moved to Oregon in 1941, where he lived in Klamath Falls, Ashland and Medford.
Mr. Mitchell was a concrete finisher. He also worked on area ranches.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Survivors include two sons, Jack, Eagle Point, and Freddy, in Georgia; a daughter, Vernetta Kirkland, Phoenix; two brothers, R.W., Klamath Falls, and Ray, Ashland; 15 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, three brothers and three sisters.
Friends may pay their respects from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.
Frederick Wayne Bratten
The memorial service for Frederick Wayne Bratten will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Rogue Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Ashland.
Mr. Bratten, 81, of Ashland, died Saturday (June 14, 2003) at his home.
He was born June 30, 1921, in Louisville, Ohio, to Wayne and Florence (Ewing) Bratten. He graduated from William McKinley High School in Canton, Ohio, in 1939. In 1942, he married
Ruth Darling. They had three children and later divorced.
Mr. Bratten worked as a radio repairman, and for Ohio Bell Telephone Company before joining the U.S. Navy in 1942. As chief radio technician, he taught radar in Navy Radio Technician Schools at Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay and Navy Pier in Chicago until his discharge in 1945. In 1950, he earned a bachelor’s degree in physics, with honors, at Case Institute of Technology, now Case Western Reserve University. He received a master’s degree in physics from the University of California Berkeley in 1952.
Mr. Bratten worked in the aerospace industry in Southern California for the next 15 years. He last position was as technical director of a team of researchers responsible for the formulation and implementation of plans and programs for the evaluation of ballistic missile systems.
In 1967, he accepted a position as operations research analyst. with the U.S. Forest Service Fire Research Laboratory in Riverside, Calif. He was a pioneer in applying concepts of operations research to fire management problems and constructed computer-based management systems that helped front-line fire managers determine the most efficient use of manpower and equipment, including aircraft, in controlling forest fires. He retired in 1986.
In 1971, he married
Mary Schneider, who survives. They moved to Ashland in 1987.
A Unitarian since the 1960s, Mr. Bratten became a member of Rogue Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in 1987. He enjoyed writing his own computer programs and developed a computer program to keep track of annual congregational canvass and member’s pledges.
He was a member of Sigma Xi, Operations Research Society of America, Federation of American Scientists and Physicians for Social Responsibility.
Mr. Bratten enjoyed reading, listening to music, hiking and gardening.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include four daughters, Susan Weaver, Riverside, Calif., Jill Richardson, Los Angeles, Diane Schneider and Catherine Schneider, both Ashland; four sons, Jonathan Bratten, Honolulu, Richard Schneider, Phelan, Calif., Arthur Schneider, Talent and Joseph Schneider, Medford; two sisters, Alice Cole, Sherrodsville, Ohio, and Geraldine Klink, New Braunfels, Texas; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Jack E. Bratten.

Daron Jay Buchholz

Mr. Buchholz, 23, of Medford, died Sunday (June 15, 2003) in Central Point.

He was born March 17, 1980, in Medford, to Marlin M. and Irene M. (Jordheim) Buchholz. He was raised in Medford and attended Lone Pine Elementary and Hedrick Middle School. In 1998, he graduated from North Medford High School, where he was a member of the Graphics Arts Club.
Mr. Buchholz worked for Sterlings Printing in White City for a short time before going to work as a press operator at Pronto Print in Medford. He worked there for four years.
He enjoyed music and installing car stereos, fishing, camping and four-wheelers. He also enjoyed gardening when he was younger.
Survivors include his parents, Marlin and Irene Buchholz, Medford; a brother, Brad, Medford; two sisters, Melinda Jensen and Teresa Rainey, both Alexandria, Va.

Jack E. White
The memorial service for Jack E. White will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Medford.
Mr. White, 83, of Jacksonville, died Saturday (June 14, 2003) at his home.

He was born April 7, 1920, in Lost Creek, Wash., to William and Ada (Davis) White. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1924 from Washington and attended Medford schools. On Nov. 1, 1940, in Medford, he married
Shirley Lou Schlund, who survives.
Mr. White was a printing pressman for 25 years. He also owned Bamby’s coffee shop in the Big Y shopping center, retiring in 1982.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Mr. White was an elder at the Jacksonville Presbyterian Church.
He enjoyed golf, his family and church.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three daughters, Pam Walling, Juneau, Alaska, Jaci Johnson and Shelley McLaughlin, both Vacaville, Calif.; a son, Mark, Stateline, Nev.; a twin sister, Jeanette Dayton, Portland; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.

Wilma Pauline Krebs
The funeral for Wilma Pauline Krebs will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Living Praise Tabernacle in Central Point. Pastor Harmon Dickey will officiate. Interment will be in Eagle Point National cemetery.
Mrs. Krebs, 85, of Medford, died Sunday (June 15, 2003) at her home.

She was born Oct. 1, 1917, in Ashland, to Lester and Bernice Ellis. On Jan. 17, 1994, at Lake Tahoe, Calif., she married
Melvin L. Krebs, who survives. Except for a short time in Washington, she lived in the Rogue Valley all her life.
Mrs. Krebs worked in central supplies for Rogue Valley Medical Center. She had also worked for Lord’s Hospital in Pasco, Wash.
She was a member of Living Praise Tabernacle.
Mrs. Krebs was an avid reader. She enjoyed camping, sewing, quilting and music.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include two sons, Monte Whaley, in Washington, and Darrell Krebs, Medford; a brother, Neal Ellis, Butte Falls; three sisters, Verla Zimmerlee and Lila McClanahan, both Butte Falls, and Barbara Glasscock, Carson City, Nev.; seven grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Shannon Yearout; five brothers, and a sister.

John Robert Stofflet

Mr. Stofflet, 57, of Central Point, died Saturday (June 14, 2003) at his home.

He was born Dec. 13, 1945, in Beaver Dam, Wis., to Elroy and Lois (Beucus) Stofflet. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1969 from California. On Oct. 19, 1969, in Reno, Nev., he married
Deborah Smith, who survives.
Mr. Stofflet was the plant manager for NW Printed Circuit Allphase Circuit. For the last two years he owned and operated a yard maintenance service.
He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1966 to 1969.
Mr. Stofflet was a member of the Rogue Valley Street Rods and the Medford Moose Lodge.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Brian and Adam, both Medford; two brothers, David, Medford, and Donald Beaver Dam, Wis.; and one grandson.
