Hazel Marie Matteson
The graveside service for Hazel Marie Matteson will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Eagle Point National cemetery Interment Shelter. Chaplain Paul Hagedorn of Providence Hospice will officiate.
Mrs. Matteson, 83, of Medford, died Sunday (Nov. 24, 2002) at Providence Medford Medical Center.
She was born Aug. 16, 1919, in Portland, to Hans and Lucy Carlson. On June 15, 1935, in Yuma, Ariz., she married
Paul O. Matteson, who survives. They moved to Medford two months ago from Grants Pass, where they had lived for more than 50 years.
Mrs. Matteson was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Grants Pass.
She enjoyed painting, sewing and her family.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include two daughters, Carolyn Sargent, Medford, and Julie Dralle, Arroyo Grande, Calif.; a brother, Dick Carlson, in Nevada; a sister, Grace Holmes, Oceanside, Calif.; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, William, Jack and Ray Carlson; and two sisters, Faye Benedict and Lou Krochalk.

Betty T. King
The service for Betty Theresa (Henry) King will be held during the noon Mass on Monday at St. Joseph Parish in Roseburg.
Mrs. King, 72, of Roseburg, died Saturday (Nov. 23, 2002) at a Eugene hospital.

She was born May 6, 1930, in Denver, the seventh of 12 children of John J. and Mary F. (Fellows) Henry. She received a master’s degree in education from what is now Southern Oregon University. On Feb. 11, 1950, at the Catholic church in Ashland, she married
her high school sweetheart, Otto King, who survives.
Mrs. King was a teacher. She taught at Medford Middle and Senior High Schools, Umpqua Community College and Roseburg High School, in the business department. Her two younger children were in her classes while they were attending high school. She often placed students in work sites around the community and was proud of her students’ accomplishments. She retired from teaching in 1990.
She served two terms as president of both the Roseburg Newcomers and Friends Club and West Slope Garden Club. She was an active participant in the annual events at the Douglas County Fair where she often won blue ribbons for her floral displays.
Mrs. King was a member of St. Joseph Parish and previously served as a Eucharist minister. More recently, she was involved with the St. Joseph Community Kitchen.
She enjoyed arts and crafts, learning the piano, gardening and the outdoors, especially camping with her husband, family, and the Roseburg Elks Umpqua Ramblers RV group.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of 52 years, include three children: Lynn C. King, Woodburn, Kathleen B.K. Robinson, Seattle, and Steven T. King, Bellingham, Wash.; seven siblings; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

T. Geraldine ‘Gerrie’ Halbert
T. Geraldine "Gerrie" Halbert, 78, of Grants Pass, died Monday (Nov. 25, 2002) at Three Rivers Community Hospital in Grants Pass. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.
She was born Aug. 3, 1924, in Fowler, Kan., to Artumus and Alta Halbert. She received a bachelor’s degree in education from Northern University of Colorado.
Ms. Halbert taught physical education at Grants Pass High School for 36 years until her retirement. She helped start the girls athletic department and coached girls basketball, volleyball and tennis.
She received awards for her coaching, and was named Oregon Outstanding Women’s Basketball Coach. Ms. Halbert enjoyed fishing, bowling and girls basketball.
She is survived by a sister, Madge Halzelick, Denver.

Richard R. McDonough
Richard Raymond McDonough, 39, of Brookings, formerly of the Medford area, died Friday (Nov. 22, 2002) at Elderberry Flats Campground. No service is planned.
He was born Nov. 12, 1963, in Lynwood, Calif., to Ronald and Patricia Collins McDonough.
Mr. McDonough was an auto mechanic. He worked for the Used Car Factory in Medford and 101 Auto Sales in Brookings.
He enjoyed fishing, his children and grandchildren, and his dog, Champ.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth "Liz" McDonough, Brookings; a son, Robert, Brookings; two daughters, Brenda J. McDaniels and Kristeen McDonough, both Medford; his father, Ron, in Pennsylvania; a brother, Ronald Charles Jr., in Pennsylvania; his grandmother, Elizabeth Collins, White City; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother.

Earl John Lemmeyer
Earl John Lemmeyer, 82, of Eagle Point, died Sunday (Nov. 24, 2002) at Linda Vista Care Center in Ashland. No service is planned. Interment will be at Eagle Point National cemetery.
He was born Aug. 14, 1920, in Cleveland, to Joseph and Rose Lemmeyer. In Lancaster, Calif., he married
Maybeth Seitz, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley three years ago from Joshua Tree, Calif.
Mr. Lemmeyer was a machinist for Hughes Airlines and worked on the Spruce Goose.
He served as a corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps in the Pacific Theater, fighting in Okinawa and the Ryukyu Islands.
Mr. Lemmeyer was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He enjoyed dogs, especially his Great Dane, Brutus, the outdoors, and visiting Oregon when he lived in California.
He is survived by his wife, Maybeth, Eagle Point. He was preceded in death by a brother, six sisters, and a step-daughter.

Edward Michael McAlvage
The memorial service for Edward Michael McAlvage will be at 1 p.m. Monday at River Valley Community Church. The Rev. Everett Denniston will officiate.
Mr. McAlvage, 84, of Grants Pass, died Saturday (Nov. 23, 2002) at Laurel Hill Nursing Home.
He was born Jan. 12, 1918, in Reading, Pa. He received a degree in forestry from Oregon State University in 1942. On Dec. 25, 1941, in Coos Bay, he married
Verda Clark, who died in 1997. They moved to Grants Pass in 1945.
Mr. McAlvage owned and operated Pacific Custom Loader, retiring in the late 1960s. In 1969, he went to Thailand with the American Baptist Mission for six years, and again in 1979 for three years.
He had been a member of River Valley Community Church since 1945.
Survivors include a son, Michael, Medford; three daughters, Jill Smith, Grants Pass, Karen Frketich, Sherwood, and Marsha McAlvage, Hanalei, Hawaii; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, David.

Mae V. Minter
The memorial service for Mae V. Minter, 95, of Eugene will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Fairfield Baptist in Eugene. Interment will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Scottsburg cemetery in Scottsburg.
Mrs. Minter, formerly of the Rogue Valley, died Saturday (Nov. 23, 2002).
Born Dec. 10, 1906, in Payson Ariz., she married
James C. Van Natta in Whittier, Calif., on June 30, 1929. He died in 1957. On Feb. 14, 1981, in Grants Pass, she married
Thomas Minter, who died in 1997.
Mrs. Minter graduated from Whittier College and taught at New Hope Christian School in Grants Pass for 22 years.
She lived in Scottsburg, Grants Pass, White City and Eugene.
She volunteered as librarian at the New Hope school after her retirement. She enjoyed reading and corresponding with missionaries.
Mrs. Minter was a member of the Sams Valley Community Church in White City, Wycliffe Associates and Calvary Baptist Church in Grants Pass.
She is survived by two stepdaughters, Barbara Reynolds, White City, and Patricia May, Blachly; a stepson, James Minter, Philomath; 15 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-granchildren.

Donald Bernard Tolner
The funeral for Donald Bernard Tolner will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Memory Gardens Mortuary Chapel. Pastor Dick Bull of Eagle Point Community Bible Church will officiate. The graveside service will follow at Memory Gardens Memorial Park.
Mr. Tolner, 77, of Medford, died Wednesday (Nov. 20, 2002) at his home.
He was born March 19, 1925, in Erie, Pa. On April 2, 1969, in Virginia City, Nev., he married
Anita L. Lee, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley 15 years ago from San Diego.
Mr. Tolner was a heavy equipment operator in construction for many years before his retirement.
He was a jack of all trades, a cowboy, and enjoyed working on cars and spending time with his family.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Donald B. Jr., Medford; six daughters, Susan Tolner, Medford, Belinda Brubaker and Joyce Rogers, both Central Point, Debra Osborne and Donna Vaternick, both Portland, and Jacque Tyszka, Grapevine, Texas; two sisters, Virginia Hundley, Las Vegas, and Violet Pitts, Lubbock, Texas; and 11 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Roland Tolner; and a sister, Madeline Brum.

James Robert Read
The committal service for James Robert Read will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Eagle Point National cemetery. The Revs. Doug Pittman and Jerry Hanson will officiate.
Mr. Read, 72, of Ada, Mich., formerly of the Rogue Valley, died Oct. 26, 2002, in Ada, Mich.

He was born July 14, 1930, in Le Mars, Iowa, to Cecil and Leone Read. He lived in the Rogue Valley from 1945 to 1969, and graduated from Medford High School in 1949. On Dec. 29, 1969, in Grand Rapids, Mich., he married
Lois A. Westra, who died in 1993. He later married
Barbara Schaaf, who survives.
Mr. Read worked for Crater Lake National Park and was the road and trails foreman for 17 years. He also worked for Bear Creek Corp. for seven years, and at St. Mary’s Hospital assisting patients in pre-op surgery.
During the Korean War, he served in the infantry as an intelligence and reconnaissance scout. He received the Purple Heart.
Mr. Read was a member of the Old Soldiers Social Club.
He enjoyed amateur archeology and mining.
Survivors include his wife of 7½ years, Barbara, Ada, Mich.; brothers, Gordon, Paul, Michael Rodney, and Stan, of Medford, and Tom, of Brookings; four sisters, Helen Hanson, Medford Kathy Lucas, Eugene, Joan Williams, Beaverton and Mary Sue Buchwald, Springfield. He was preceded in death by his first wife; and a brother, Marvin.

Ruth M. Schumacher
The funeral for Ruth M. Schumacher will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Perl Funeral Home Chapel in Medford. Her son-in-law, Pastor Andy Cochran of Delta Bible Church in Antioch, Calif., will officiate.
Mrs. Schumacher, 89, formerly of Central Point, died Nov. 17, 2002, at Diamond Ridge Care Center in Pittsburg, Calif.

She was born June 1, 1913, in New Hope, Pa., to Edward and Cora (Magill) Hellyer. On June 4, 1937, in Brooklyn, N.Y., she married
Charles G. Schumacher Jr., who died in 1989. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1971 from Southern California.
Mrs. Schumacher was a homemaker.
During her 25 years in the Rogue Valley, she was a member of Community Bible Church in Central Point, and was a volunteer at the Central Point Senior Center.
Mrs. Schumacher enjoyed gardening, reading, family and church activities.
Survivors include two daughters, Lillian R. Easter, Grants Pass, and Darlene M. Cochran, Antioch, Calif.; a sister, Dorothy Jordan, Garden Grove, Calif.; a brother, Howard Hellyer, Medford; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Charles G. III; and 12 sisters and brothers.
Friends may pay their respects from 2 to 5 p.m. Monday at Perl Funeral Home Chapel, Medford.
Jeremiah John Price
The funeral for Jeremiah John Price, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Nelson’s Bay Area Mortuary in Coos Bay. Interment will be at Ocean View Memory Gardens.
Mr. Price, 28, of Coos Bay, formerly of Central Point, died Thursday (Nov. 21, 2002) in Bandon as a result of an automobile accident.
He was born Oct. 28, 1974, in Central Point, to Kenneth and Sheri Lynn (Tripp) Price. He was raised and educated in Enumclaw, Wash., where he lived until age 16, when he moved to the Medford area.
Mr. Price had lived in Coos Bay for the past five years and had worked at several mills in the area.
He was a member of the Coquille Indian Tribe.
Mr. Price enjoyed snow skiing, fishing, listening to loud music, especially heavy metal, and spending time with his family and friends.
Survivors include a son Trevor James, Coos Bay; his mother and stepfather, Sheri and Jesus Meza, Coos Bay; his father and stepmother, Kenneth and Cindy Price Enumclaw, Wash.; three brothers, Brian Price, Central Point, Fidel Garcia, Coos Bay, and Jesse Meza, Coos Bay; a stepbrother, Simon Media, Cumberland, Wash.; a sister, Jessica Branbila-Meza, Coos Bay; a stepsister, Tami Nordenger, Buckley, Wash.; and his grandparents, Darlene Logan, Medford, Joseph Tripp Sr., in North Carolina, Betty Price, Medford, and Roy "Red" Price, Enterprise. He was preceded in death by brother, Jose Cejia.
