Lester Bailey Wakeman
The memorial service for Lester Bailey Wakeman will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Community Bible Church in Central Point. Pastor Tim Slusser will officiate. Interment will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Medford.
Mr. Wakeman, 90, of White City, died Saturday (Dec. 28, 2002) at his home.

He was born Nov. 15, 1912, in Klamath Falls, to Raymond and Alice Wakeman. On Nov. 12, 1942, in Reno, Nev., he married
Waunevia Black, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley from Lassen County, Calif., in 1946.
Mr. Wakeman was a trim saw operator for Medford Corporation, retiring after 29 years.
He served as a staff sergeant in the Army Air Forces from 1942 to 1946.
Mr. Wakeman was a member of the American Baptist Church in Eagle Point and had attended Community Bible Church in Central Point for 14 years.
He was an avid fisherman and hunter and enjoyed traveling.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Steven Mark, Medford; a daughter, Leslie Marie Wakeman, White City; two step-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Dolores M. ‘Lori’ Nelson
The memorial service for Dolores M. "Lori" Nelson will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Chapel of the Valley Funeral Home in Grants Pass.
Ms. Nelson, 70, of Rogue River, died Monday (Dec. 30, 2002) at Royale Gardens Health and Rehabilitation Center in Grants Pass.

She was born June 1, 1932, in Oakland, Calif., and graduated from Holy Names High School in Oakland. She never married

Ms. Nelson worked for Pacific Telephone for 30 years, beginning as a telephone operator. She moved to Rogue River from Walnut Creek, Calif., in 1983.
At 67 years of age, she received a certificate from the YMCA in Grants Pass acknowledging her swimming 1, 500 miles. She also participated in the Y’s aqua-jogging.
Ms. Nelson enjoyed camping, bird watching, cats, mystery novels and crossword and jigsaw puzzles.
Survivors include her companion, Doris Broadley, Rogue River; two sisters, Marcia Lopes, Rogue River and Margaret Serna, San Jose, Calif.; and a brother, John T. "Ted" Nelson II, Fremont, Calif.;

Laura Drury Porter
The memorial service for Laura Drury Porter will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Perl Funeral Home at Siskiyou Memorial Park.
Mrs. Porter, 90, of Medford, died Monday (Dec. 30, 2002) at her home.

She was born Laura Drury on May 26, 1912, in Evanston, Ill. In 1928, her family moved from Detroit to Medford, where she attended high school. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Oregon in 1935. She was also a member of Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority. In 1938, in Medford, she married
Norris K. Porter, and they set off on a teaching adventure into the Alaskan interior.
In 1955, Mrs. Porter began a career as an executive secretary with the Southern Oregon chapter of the American Red Cross, retiring in 1981 after 26 years.
Mrs. Porter was an avid reader and was the author of the highly acclaimed book, "Flat Alaska." She enjoyed playing bridge, gardening and telling stories.
She was an active member of the Christian Science Church, Colony Club, Soroptimist and the Jacksonville Library Book Club.
Survivors include two sons, Brian K., Medford, and Jeffrey L., Poulsbo, Wash.; a daughter, C.J. Larkin, Los Angeles; a sister, Mildred D. Peachie Hinman, Portland; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Underwood.

Mary Elizabeth Nellist
Mary Elizabeth Nellist, 90, of Medford, died Dec. 20, 2002, at Rogue Valley Medical Center. The memorial service will be held at a later date.
She was born May 15, 1912, in Eureka, Calif., to Jay and Matilda Cronin. She attended high school in Eureka, Calif., and graduated from Humboldt State Teachers College in Arcata, Calif., in 1934. In November 1934, in Grants Pass, she married
Leland P. Nellist, who died in 1961 in Guadalajara, Mexico. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1972 from Hawaii.
Mrs. Nellist was a volunteer with Loaves and Fishes, where she referred to herself as an "xologist, " a person who puts Xs on forms.
She enjoyed reading, crafting and watching hummingbirds.
Survivors include a son, Timothy J., Antelope, Calif.; two daughters, Nancy Graber and Diane Pace, both Medford; eight grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

George Anthony Kalams
George Anthony Kalams, 74, of Medford, died Saturday (Dec. 28, 2002) at a foster home in Medford. A private service will be held. Interment will be in Eagle Point National cemetery.

He was born Aug. 3, 1928, in Alton, Ill., to George and Mary Kalams. He attended schools in Cheyenne, Wyo. On Aug. 26, 1950, in Cheyenne, he married
Beverly Fay Frederick, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1963 from Cheyenne.
Mr. Kalams and his wife operated S-W Floor Cover Shop from 1975 until its closure in 1998.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy as a fireman second class on the USS Spokane.
Mr. Kalams was a member of the Wednesday Men’s Club at Red Mountain Golf Course and had three holes in one.
He enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren, playing golf with his sons and friends, and watching sports on TV.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, David and John, both Medford; his mother, Mary Snyder, Cheyenne, Wyo.; and three grandchildren.

Clarence G. Dvoracek
Clarence G. Dvoracek, 82, of Medford, died Friday (Dec. 27, 2002) at Faith Adult Foster Care in Ashland. No service is planned.

He was born Oct. 19, 1920, in Tabor, S.D., to George and Frances (Halva) Dvoracek. On Nov. 14, 1982, in Reno, Nev., he married
Margaret Jimmie Hess, who died in 2001. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1971 from Whittier, Calif.
Locally, Mr. Dvoracek worked as a heavy equipment mechanic.
During World War II, he served as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army.
Mr. Dvoracek was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of the Eagles.
He enjoyed camping, dancing and polka music.
Survivors include two daughters, Pamela Erickson, Talent, and Patricia Shierant, Las Vegas; a stepdaughter, Elizabeth Thompson, Central Point; four grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, Clarence Jr. and Arnold; and his first wife, LaVonne Dvoracek.

Willard Eugene ‘Bill’ Cox
Willard Eugene "Bill" Cox, 72, of Medford, died Saturday (Dec. 28, 2002) at his home. A private service will be held. Inurnment will be at Eagle Point National cemetery.

He was born Nov. 12, 1930, in Cottonwood Falls, Kan., to Ray and Gladys Cox. On Jan. 2, 1950, in Minden, Nev., he married
Mary J. Holden, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1972 from Roseburg.
Mr. Cox was a professional long-haul driver. After retiring from trucking, he worked for the State of Oregon Military Department, retiring in 1993.
He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.
Mr. Cox was a member of the International Typographical Union, and was active with ACCESS and CERVSin Medford.
He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, boating and spending time with his family.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Timothy Ray, Ashland, and Anthony Dale, Hillsboro; two daughters, Tomi Lavonn Milliron, Medford, and Natasha Jean Oilar, Hillsboro; a brother, Edward, in Nebraska; two sisters, Wanda Mae Beatty, Sweetwater, Texas, and Ruth Lavonn Luster, Pecos, Texas; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Lloyd T. and Ray Jr.; and a sister, Norma Jean Croch.

Erma Evelyn Mount
Erma Evelyn Mount, 79, of Medford, died Saturday (Dec. 28, 2002) at Rogue Valley Medical Center. No service is planned.
She was born Feb. 10, 1923, in Provo, Utah, to Elmer and Archie (Clark) Belveal. On Aug. 31, 1963, in Monrovia, Calif., she married
Raymond Earl Mount, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1979 from West Covina, Calif.
Mrs. Mount was a homemaker.
She enjoyed crafts, flower arranging and spending time with her family.
Survivors include two daughters, Peggy Laybourne, Eagle Point, and Linda Broome, Salinas, Calif.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Greg Laybourne; three sisters, Annie Lowery, Melvina Dotson, and Mary Lasher; and two brothers, Burl Crouse and Willard Belveal.

John M. Tedeschi
The memorial Mass for John M. Tedeschi will be at 8:30 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Medford.
Mr. Tedeschi, 90, of Medford, died Tuesday (Dec. 24, 2002) at a local foster care facility.

He was born Sept. 29, 1912, in Rockland, Mass., to Antonio and Maria (Fusco) Tedeschi. On April 9, 1944, in Rockland, Mass., he married
Mary Louise Carreaux, who died in 2001. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1968 from Mount Baldy, Calif.
Mr. Tedeschi owned and operated Snaps Sporting Goods in Ontario, Calif.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Mr. Tedeschi enjoyed his family, fishing and hunting.
Survivors include a son, James M., Mesa, Ariz.; a daughter, Toni Pia, Ontario, Calif.; a sister, Rose Tedeschi, Grants Pass; a brother, Albert, Grants Pass; and four grandchildren.

Raymond E. West
The committal service for Raymond E. West will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Eagle Point National cemetery. Chaplain Earl Best will officiate.
Mr. West, 80, of Myrtle Creek, died Thursday (Dec. 26, 2002) at Roseburg Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
He was born April 23, 1922, in Phoenix, to Joseph Alexandria and Maggie Belle (Henshaw) West. He grew up in the Applegate and lived in this area most of his life.
Mr. West worked in the wood products industry most of his life.
He served in the U.S. Navy from 1940 to 1947, attaining the rank of ship’s cook first class.
Mr. West enjoyed fishing.
Survivors include a daughter, Linda Downs, Salem; four sisters, Ina Belle Ragsdale, Medford, Luetta Straube, Applegate, Edna Paul, Yuba City, Calif., and Laura Beeman, Sacramento, Calif.; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters and four brothers.

Samuel Winters Morrison
The memorial service for Samuel Winters Morrison will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Eastwood Baptist Church in Medford.
Mr. Morrison, 76, of Medford, died Dec. 24, 2002, at his home.

Eleanor Maxine Eskotter
Eleanor Maxine Eskotter, 89, of Medford, died Friday (Dec. 27, 2002) at a foster care facility in Medford. No service is planned. Inurnment will be in Los Gatos, Calif.
She was born Dec. 2, 1913, in Oakmont, Pa., to James W. and Lillian (Staats) Irwin. She completed two years of study at Ward-Belmont College in Nashville, Tenn. On Aug. 30, 1940, in Dearborn, Mich., she married
Stanley H. Eskotter, who died in 1974. They moved to the Rogue Valley from the Sierra Nevada in California.
Mrs. Eskotter was a homemaker.
She enjoyed golf, bridge, horseback riding and volunteer youth activities.
Survivors include a son, Stanley Jr., Medford; a daughter, Gail Stobie, San Jose, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Anthony.
