Kathy Hauck
The memorial service for Lucy Kathleen "Kathy" Weeks Hauck will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland. Interment of ashes will be at Trail Creek cemetery, Trail.
Mrs. Hauck, 84, of Ashland, died Monday (Sept. 16, 2002) at her home.

She was born March 5, 1918, in Trail, to Eva and George Weeks. She traveled extensively before settling in Ashland in 1959.
Mrs. Hauck was the head of housekeeping for the Mark Antony Hotel in Ashland for five years in the early 1960s.
She was very active in community affairs. She initiated the Johnson Administration war on poverty program in Ashland and was a founding board member of the Community Health Center. She founded the Women’s Confidence Clinic in Jackson, Josephine and Douglas counties. She was also an active volunteer at Bellview School and at the Donald Lewis Retirement Center, where she lived. In addition, she was a foster grandmother at Lithia Springs School, in the boys and girls homes.
Mrs. Hauck enjoyed gardening, quilting, sewing and painting.
Survivors include three sons, Gerald and Steve, both Ashland, and David, Hugo; a daughter, Sheri Burrell, Ashland; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by a son; three brothers and four sisters.

Leah Irene Custer
The memorial service for Leah Irene Custer will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Baptist Church in White City. Mr. Cary Dye will officiate.
Mrs. Custer, 67, of Central Point, died Sunday (Sept. 15, 2002) at the home of her daughter.

She was born April 2, 1935, in Medford, to James W. and Alma (Conner) Dye. On April 10, 1953, in Klamath Falls, she married
William J. Custer, who preceded her in death.
Mrs. Custer was a homemaker. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1959 from Bonanza.
Survivors include three daughters, Gail D. Bailey and Cindy K. Custer, both Central Point, and Leslie L. Hanrahan, Medford; four brothers, Warren and Blayne Dye, both Central Point, Neil Dye, Prospect, and Elwood Dye, North Bend; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Ronold Dye.

Peter John Anderson
The funeral Mass for Peter John Anderson will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Matthew Catholic Church in Hillsboro. A reception will follow. Interment will be at Willamette National cemetery, Portland, later that afternoon.
Mr. Anderson, 52, of Hillsboro, formerly of Medford, died Saturday (Sept. 14, 2002) as the result of an automobile accident.

He was born June 11, 1950, in Longview, Wash., to Arthur G. Jr. and Vera A. (Waine) Anderson. His early years were spent in Clatskanie. The family moved to Eugene in 1957, where he attended Sheldon High School.
He joined the Marine Corps in 1967, serving in Vietnam. Following his discharge in 1970, he lived in San Diego for a brief time before returning to Eugene, where he lived off and on for a number of years. In 1973, he married
Cynthia Stewart. They later divorced. In 1981, in Brookings, he married
Cathy Smith. They later divorced.
Mr. Anderson worked in construction in Medford, Colorado, New Mexico, Virginia, and Tennessee. In 1999, he moved to Hillsboro and had been teaching contracting skills at Portland Community College and Clackamas Community College. He also taught the Construction Academy for high school students in Vancouver, Wash. At the time of his death, he was a student at Eastern Oregon University.
He was past president of the Southern Oregon Homebuilders Association, and continued his involvement with other construction companies.
Mr. Anderson especially enjoyed teaching the "I Have A Hammer" classes to fifth-grade students in his area. He was a volunteer for area veterans and collected clothing for the Veterans Affairs Domiciliary in Vancouver, Wash.
He was an avid golfer. He also enjoyed flying, water and snow skiing, camping and hang gliding.
Survivors include two daughters, Molly Anderson, Keizer, and Sara Anderson, Eugene; his mother and stepfather, Vera and John Zuercher, Hillsboro; four sisters, Therese Wavrin, Medford, Fran Anderson, Hillsboro, Valerie Anderson, Atlanta, and Marianne Anderson, Seattle. He was preceded in death by his father, and two brothers, Arthur G. III and Stephen K.

Vernon G. Grayhek
The funeral Mass for Vernon G. Grayhek will be at 8:30 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Medford. The Rev. David Schiferl will officiate.
Mr. Grayhek, 78, of Medford, died Monday (Aug. 26, 2002) at Waterford at Three Fountains.

He was born March 31, 1924, in San Jose, Calif., to George and Kathryn Grayhek. He received a degree in engineering from Gonzaga University in Spokane, Wash. On May 3, 1952, in Spokane, Wash., he married
Elizabeth Toth, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley 10 years ago.
Mr. Grayhek was a nuclear engineer for General Electric at their power plants. He also worked for NESCO.
He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II.
Mr. Grayhek was an avid reader and enjoyed traveling.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a brother, Roy, Spokane, Wash.; and a sister, Kathleen Gilstrap, Portland.

Helen Margerie Helgeson
Helen Margerie Helgeson, 94, of Medford, died Sunday (Aug. 25, 2002) at Rogue Valley Medical Center. No service is planned.
She was born Aug. 24, 1908, in State Line, Minn., to Martin and Mary (Kimbal) Mosher.
Ms. Helgeson worked in the shipyards in Oakland, Calif., during World War II. She moved to Oregon in 1947, working in logging until 1960. She was a camp manager and cook, and then worked as a school bus driver for a local school district, retiring in 1968.
She is survived by a brother, Warren Mosher, Harmony, Minn. she was preceded in death by a sister, Gladys Stankovich.

Virginia Franklyn Williams
The memorial service for Virginia Franklyn Williams will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Chapel of the Valley Funeral Home, Grants Pass. Bishop Neil Randall of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Merlin Ward, will officiate.
Mrs. Williams, 83, of Grants Pass, died Friday (Aug. 23, 2002), at Highland House Nursing and Rehabilitation in Grants Pass.
She was born Dec. 8, 1918, in Ray, Ariz., to Frank and Evelyn Brundage. On Dec. 13, 1936, in Los Angeles, she married
Paul D. Williams.
For more than 20 years, Mrs. Williams and her husband raced quarter horses in California. She moved to Grants Pass in 1971 from Fresno, Calif.
She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Merlin Ward.
Mrs. Williams enjoyed sewing, gardening, playing bunco, traveling and hunting and camping.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of 65 years, include a son, Paul D. Jr., Meridian, Idaho; a daughter, Lynn Boudreau, Grants Pass; a sister, Louise Dear, Brookings; two brothers, Frank Brundage, Ramona, Calif., and Dewey Brundage, Orem, Utah; three grandchildren; and one great- grandson.

Nora Maria Kottke
The graveside service for Nora Maria Kottke will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hillcrest cemetery in Medford.
Mrs. Kottke, 99, of Central Point, died Sunday (Aug. 25, 2002) in Medford.

She was born Aug. 14, 1903, in Shevlin, Clearwater County, Minn., to Albert and Maria (Gilmore) Greenslitt. She attended school in Shevlin and moved to Bemidji, Minn., in 1917. On Aug. 17, 1921, in Bemidji, Minn., she married
Lawrence Kottke, who died in 1988. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1956 from Eugene.
Mrs. Kottke was a homemaker. She enjoyed sewing and doll collecting. She was a member of the former Central Point Church of Christ and was a charter member of the Rogue Valley Doll Club.
Survivors include three sons, Eugene and Dennis, both Central Point, and Robert, Cardiff, Calif.; two daughters, Marilyn Howell, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Gwen Garoutte, Central Point; 13 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers.

William D. Ferguson
The graveside service for William D. Ferguson will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Eagle Point National cemetery Interment Shelter. Chaplain Paul Hagedorn of Providence Hospice will officiate.
Mr. Ferguson, 80, of Medford, died Friday (Aug. 23, 2002) at a foster care home in Medford.

He was born Dec. 13, 1921, in Port Arena, Calif., to William and Sarah Ferguson. On Aug. 7, 1974, in Reno, Nev., he married
Johanna Gorich, who survives. They lived in the Rogue Valley for the past 16 years, moving from Hayward, Calif.
Mr. Ferguson joined the U.S. Navy in 1940. He graduated from radio school and was then assigned to the fleet, where his first sea duty was the USS Lexington (CV-2).
Six months later he was transferred to Flag Radio Division under Admiral William F. Halsey aboard the USS Enterprise. He typed the message "Air Raid On Pearl Harbor X This Is Not Drill" that was sent to all ships in the Hawaiian area when Pearl Harbor was attacked. The original copy is presently in the Enterprise Room at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola Museum in Florida. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy in 1960.
Mr. Ferguson was a police dispatcher for the Oakland Police Department in Oakland, Calif., from 1964 until his retirement on Sept. 13, 1985.
He enjoyed reading history, historical locations, writing editorials, studying the Bible, rides and nature.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Larry, and Gene, Redding, Calif.; a daughter, Sheryl A. Rowland, Laguna Hills, Calif.; two brothers, Charles "Chuck, " Stockton, Calif., and Gary, in Arizona; two sisters, Annabelle Vermullen and Lynda Ferguson, both Santa Rosa, Calif.; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Bill Drew Ferguson; and two brothers, Clyde and Clarence Ferguson.

Derek George Melbourne

Mr. Melbourne, 71, of Medford, died Aug. 20, 2002, at Providence Medford Medical Center.

He was born April 25, 1931, in Doncaster, United Kingdom, to George and Mable Melbourne. In 1956, he married
Doreen Melbourne. They divorced in 1981. On Sept. 11, 1992, in San Jose, Calif., he married
Margrit Liedke, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1993 from Palo Alto, Calif.
Mr. Melbourne was a electronics engineer at Lockheed Martin in Sunnyvale, Calif. He lived in the Bay area for 30 years.
He was a member of the Elks Lodge and the Amateur Ham Radio Club.
Mr. Melbourne enjoyed cooking, fishing, the outdoors, music and photography.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a daughter, Jane Melbourne, Palo Alto, Calif.; two stepdaughters, Claudia Simpson, Petaluma, Calif., and Andrea von der Pfordten, Williamsport, Pa.; and his former wife, Doreen, Palo Alto, Calif. He was preceded in death by a brother, Howard; and a sister, Marjorie Antenen.

Douglas B. Hanks

John W. Baxter
The memorial service for John W. Baxter will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at Rogue Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Ashland.
Mr. Baxter, 84, of Ashland, died Friday (Aug. 23, 2002) at Ashland Community Hospital.

He was born Feb. 4, 1918, in Grover, Colo., to John H. and Edna (Cole) Baxter.
He served in the Army Air Forces from 1941 to 1945, stationed in England as a member of the 62nd Pursuit Squadron, known as "Zemke’s Wolf Pack." In 1950, he married
Elizabeth J. Collins, who survives.
Mr. Baxter earned a bachelor’s degree in botany from the University of Wyoming and a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in mycology from Purdue University. He was a professor emeritus of botany at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where he taught from 1956 to 1983. He also taught at Iowa State University, the University of Arizona and the University of Wyoming. He retired in 1983, and he and his wife lived in Laramie, Wyo., before moving to Ashland in 1998 to be closer to their children.
In retirement, he continued his interest and research in botany and mycology. He was a frequent visitor to the North Mountain Park Nature Center in Ashland and spent many hours there in his last years.
Mr. Baxter was a member of the Rogue Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, the Mycological Society of America, the American Institute of Biological Sciences and the Native Plant Society of Wyoming.
He was a talented amateur musician and enjoyed music of all kinds and writing parodies of popular songs. He was known for his offbeat sense of humor.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a daughter, Carol E. Harrison, Mill Valley, Calif.; a son John R. Baxter, Ashland; a brother, George T., Laramie, Wyo.; three grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Dyson and Jean Johnson, both Lander, Wyo.

Dorna ‘Penny’ M. Grow
Dorna "Penny" M. Grow, 77, of Jacksonville, died Sunday (Aug. 25, 2002) at her home. A private service is planned.

She was born June 15, 1925, in Medford, to Joseph E. and Thelma C. (Yocum) McIntyre. A lifetime Rogue Valley resident, she attended Jacksonville schools and graduated as valedictorian of her high school. On May 29, 1965, in Medford, she married
Harold "Hal" Grow, who died in January of this year.
Mrs. Grow worked for Jackson County as a deputy county clerk for 28 years. She was a member of Royal Neighbors and Central Point Grange.
Mrs. Grow enjoyed gardening, dancing, cooking and music.
Survivors include a son, John Hal, Trail; three daughters, Nanette Edmondson, Sams Valley, Kathy Rambo, Lead, S.D., Debbie Chastain, Klamath Falls; a brother, Maurice McIntyre, Florence; two sisters, Phyllis Green, Jacksonville, and Wilma Bray, Florence; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Joseph Randall Smith.

Chester Lane
Chester Lane, 67, of Medford, died Saturday (Aug. 24, 2002) at his home. Arrangements will be announced by Conger-Morris Funeral Directors of Medford.
