Lela Altig
Lela Bernice Altig, 83, of Polson, Mont., formerly of the Newport area, died Jan. 5, 2004, at Evergreen Health and Rehabilitation Center in Polson. She was born Jan. 14, 1921, in Sheridan to Anna (Powell) and Op Huddleston.
A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Waldport Community Presbyterian Church. Grogan Funeral Home of Polson, Mont., is handling the arrangements.
James Miller
James H. Miller, 79, of Stevensville, Mont., died April 7, 2004, at St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula, Mont.
He was born July 13, 1924, in Newport to Synthia (Hart) and George Miller.
He attended school in Siletz.
He entered the U.S. Army Air Force in 1946 and was honorably discharged in 1947.
He married Kay Pillow on Sept. 8, 1951.
He was a timber cruiser and a logger.
He was a past owner of wholesale chain saw distributor, Miller's Stihl Chain Saws, and owned and operated chain saw shops in Lolo, Mont., and Missoula, Mont.
He was a past chief of Missoula County Search and Rescue and a past member of the Lolo Fire Department.
He enjoyed elk hunting, fishing, camping, gardening, and competing in logging events.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Kay Miller; daughters and sons-in-law, Carol Pearson and Jeremy Templeton of Beavertail, Mont., Linda and Dave Llewellyn and Barbara and Dennis Deschamps, all of Florence, and Lisa Miller and Mark VanLoh of Stevensville, Mont.; a brother, Everett Miller of Philipsburg, Mont.; a sister-in-law, Leona Miller of Siletz; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by four brothers, George, Matt, Mike, and Tim; three sisters, Minnie, Margaret, and Diane; a son-in-law, Greg Bennett of Missoula, Mont.; in-laws, Minnie and Curtis Pillow; and a nephew, Jimmy Miller of Philipsburg, Mont.
A memorial gathering was held April 11 in Stevensville, Mont. Memorial contributions may be made to the Bitter Root Human Association animal shelter, 262 Fairgrounds Road, Hamilton, Mont. 59840. Whitesitt Funeral Home of Stevensville, Mont., handled the arrangements.
Bernice Rowland
Bernice Daisy Rowland, 81, of Hobbs, N.M., formerly of Newport, died of natural causes April 17, 2004.
She was born Aug. 15, 1922, in Hamburg, Iowa, to Iva (Gray) and Oscar Adamson.
Survivors include a son, Mike Jurgensen of Portland; a stepdaughter, Helen Basinger of Canby; a stepson, Marvin Stainbrook; a brother, Ron Rice of Hobbs, N.M.; and three grandchildren, Dan Jurgensen, Bobby Jurgensen, and Dalene Robinson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Rowland; her parents; and a sister, Eva Poulas.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at City View Cemetery in Salem. City View Funeral Home of Salem is handling the arrangements.
Marvin L. Gritton
Marvin L. Gritton, 78, of Depoe Bay died April 15, 2004.
He was born May 14, 1925, in Fallon, Nev.
He worked as a radioman for Southern Pacific.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Gritton; a daughter, Melody Gritton; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is planned for May 30, 2004.
Anna Benfield
Anna M. (Lazzarini) Benfield, 92, of Lincoln City died April 15, 2004.
She was born Nov. 24, 1911, in Lucca, Italy.
She lived in Portland from 1930 to 1948, then settled in Lake Oswego, where she resided until 1998 when she moved to Lincoln City.
She was a homemaker.
Survivors include two sons, Ronald Benfield of Newport and David Benfield of Mulino; a daughter, Carol Cranston of Oregon City; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Emmett, in 1984.
A memorial service was held April 20 at Holman's Funeral Service of Portland. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of choice.
Marjorie Dunn
Marjorie Dunn, 85, of Lincoln City died April 17, 2004.
She was born Nov. 20, 1918, in Leadore, Idaho, to Maud (Hover) and James Harold Skelton.
She moved with her family to Vancouver, Wash.
She married Ralph A. Neil in 1938. They had two children, and she worked as a rancher's wife and homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband on Aug. 1, 1960.
She married Ronald C. Dunn, who retired as a colonel in the U.S. Air Force prior to their move to Lincoln City. He preceded her in death on Dec. 6, 2001.
She enjoyed painting, sewing, crocheting, and gardening.
Survivors include two daughters, Karen R. Coate of White Salmon, Wash., and Sami Jo Neil of Lacey, Wash.; four stepchildren, Yvette Dryer of Portland, Jolayne Castle of Las Vegas, Nev., Gayle Waycasy of Orem, Utah, and Ronald C. Dunn Jr. of Friday Harbor, Wash.; two brothers, Don W. Skelton of Vancouver, Wash., and Even Eugene Skelton of Florida; a sister, Jennie Sagers of Provo, Utah; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren.
Bishop Eric Johnson will officiate a funeral service at 7 p.m. Friday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Lincoln City. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, followed by interment at Park Hill Cemetery in Vancouver, Wash. Pacific View Memorial Chapel of Lincoln City is handling the arrangements.
Victoria Lamet
Victoria Jean Lamet, 45, of Newport died June 9, 2004, of undetermined medical causes.
She was born Dec. 22, 1958, in Oakland, Calif., to Jaryl Ann (McClure) and Robert Donald Van Over.
She was baptized at Calvary Baptist Church in Newport.
She received an associate degree in electronics engineering from Heald Business College.
She was an escrow-loan officer for Betham Escrow in California.
She loved animals and walking on the beach, and enjoyed making precious stone jewelry.
Survivors include her parents, Jaryl and Robert, of Manteca, Calif.; two daughters, Lauren Lamet and Nicole Lamet, both of Benecia, Calif.; two sisters, Karen Brannaman of Newport and Kim Albers of Fremont, Calif.; an aunt, Joy Barker of Manteca, Calif.; four nieces; and three nephews.
No memorial service is planned. Bateman Funeral Home of Newport is handling the arrangements.
