Grace Ann Stuchlik
January 27, 1905 - February 29, 2008

Grace Stuchlik, 103, of Silverton died February 29, 2008.
Grace was born Jan. 27, 1905, in Logan, Kansas to Garrett and Emma Post. She was one of nine children, all of whom preceded her in death. She married Richard F. Stuchlik on March 8, 1923. They moved from Kansas to Oregon in 1936 and to Silverton in 1940.
Grace was a homemaker and retired from the local cannery. She loved to garden and took care of her own yard and garden until her health declined. Her husband died in 1997. She moved to French Prairie Care Center in Woodburn in August.
Grace is survived by her son, James Stuchlik of Hubbard; daughter, Frances A. Madison of Silverton; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Private family services will be held. Interment will be at Mt. Crest Abbey Mausoleum in Salem.

Conrad Leo Stark
July 5, 1934 - February 22, 2008

Born July 5, 1934 to John and Elizabeth (Schram) Stark in Gretna, Neb., Connie was raised in Humansville, Mo. and graduated from Humansville High School in 1951.
Connie served in the U.S. Army. After honorable discharge, he moved to Silverton in 1954. Connie worked with his dad building homes. He met Nola Jean Ross at the Towne House and they married on Oct. 4, 1959, at St. Paul’s Church in Silverton.
Connie worked in commercial construction for many years, retiring from Marion Construction in 1996.
He was a member of the Carpenters Union Local 1065, Silverton Elks Lodge, and Silverton Elks Silver-Wheelers.
Survivors: his wife of 48 years, Nola; daughters and sons-in-law, Lisa and Jim Riggleman of St. Paul, Shelli and Greg Annen of Silverton; sisters Dolores Jacke of Norfolk, Neb., and Linda Stark of Salem; five grandchildren, Cole and Megan Austin, Jay and Danielle Riggleman and Ciara Annen.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Johnny and Jim Stark; sister, Ramona Patrick; and grandson, Steven Riggleman.
Funeral is 10 a.m. today at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Silverton. Interment at Valley View cemetery. Condolences: www.alternativeburialandcremationoforegon.com. Memorials: Odyssey Hospice or cancer Research.

Robert E. Shimp
October 19, 1944 - May 27, 2008

SPRINGFIELD - Robert Shimp was born on Oct.19, 1944, in Portland, Ore,. to John and Dorothy (Able) Shimp. He married Nancy Tippet on Dec.12, 1998, and she preceded him in death on May 17, 2008.
Robert is survived by his daughter, Lisa Friesen of Springfield; sons Kevin Shimp of Salem and Darren Shimp of Spokane, Wash.; step-daughters Lynne Porter of Crawfordsville and Kathy Swan of Springfield; step-son, Gary Osborne of Eugene; sisters Mary Dunbar, Jeanette Mary, Lena Shimp, Nancy Mills and Sue Gerhards; brothers Tom Shimp, Nick Shimp and Jim Shimp; and six grandchildren.
Memorial services were June 1 at Twin Rivers Baptist Church, 1460 Mohawk, Springfield. Arrangements by Major Family Funeral Home.

Eva Edith Helmer
December 23, 1928 - May 24, 2008

Eva was born to Walter and Rose (Klenk) Husband in Wichita, Kan.
She married Ellsworth Helmer on Sept. 17, 1955, in Inglewood, Calif., and they moved to Silverton in 1971.
In January of this year, Eva moved to the Marian Estates.
Eva enjoyed volunteering, cooking, dancing and teaching Sunday school. She belonged to Immanuel Lutheran Church, the Elkettes, Eagles and Zenith Club.
She is survived by her sons Ted of Silverton and John of Tennessee; sister, Ruth Hunt of Montrose, Colo.; grandchildren Erica Schnabel and Brandon Schnabel, Michael Helmer and David Helmer; and great- grandson, Tobin Schnabel.
Services were held May 29 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Silverton. Interment at Valley View cemetery, Silverton.
Arrangements are by Unger Funeral Chapel.

Christina Grant
November 11, 1964 - May 28, 2008

Christina Grant, 43, of Silverton passed away at home on May 28. Christy is survived by her husband, David; sons Gary and Michael; daughter, Hailey; grandchildren Cuinton, Brooklyn and Bailey; parents, Don and Karon; brother, Donny; sisters Julie, Sonia and Debbie; and grandparents, Jesse and Ruby.
Christy was a very wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. She loved life, helping people and animals. My wife was my life. The world will not be the same without her. When she said, “I love you” — she loved you! I want people to know how special she was to keep my wife’s smile alive.
A memorial service was held May 31, at Silverton Praise Center, 814 N. Second St., Silverton.

Arthur Van Leeuwen
October 12, 1954 - May 15, 2008

Arthur Van Leeuwen, 53, of Silverton, died May 15.
He was born in Long Beach, Calif., and lived in Silverton for the past several years.
He is survived by his mother, Greta Van Leeuwen of Orange, Calif.; brothers Walter of Huntington Beach, Calif.; Matthew of Lawndale, Calif.; and Raymond of Philadelphia, Pa.; and sister Coby Golding of Tustin, Calif.
Private family services will be held at a later date. Arrangements are by Unger Funeral Chapel.

Marie Alice Kalgaard
August 1, 1920 - May 29, 2008

Marie Kalgaard, 87, of Silverton, died May 29.
She was born on Aug. 1, 1920, in Crockett, Calif., where she met and married Daniel Kalgaard on Dec. 30, 1936. Marie and Daniel moved to Silverton in 1970. She worked for U.S. Bank in Salem until 1985. She enjoyed spending time with family.
She is survived by her daughter Dorothy Case of Salem; son, Robert Kalgaard of Salem; and daughter Shirley Kalgaard of Walnut Creek, Calif. She is also survived by six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Marie was preceded in death by her brother, Harry E. Miller, and by her husband, Daniel in January 2007.
Interment will be at St. Joseph cemetery in San Pablo, Calif. Arrangements by Unger Funeral Chapel.

Marie Alice Kalgaard
August 1, 1920 - May 29, 2008

Marie Kalgaard, 87, of Silverton, died May 29.

Ronald Leonard Belinfante
December 22, 1938 - May 30, 2008

Ronald Leonard Belinfante, 69, of Salem died May 30.
He was born Dec. 22, 1938, in French Camp, Calif., to Isaac and Anna (Mount) Belinfante. He grew up in Stockton, Calif. and came to this area in 1977.
Ronald owned and operated a variety store and enjoyed his work at flea markets.
He is survived by his wife, Carol; daughter, Molly Belinfante; son Ron Belinfante Jr. all of Salem; and a sister, Josephine Curtis of Canada. He was preceded in death by a son Jason in 1993.
Visitation will be 12 p.m. to 3 p.m., Thursday at Unger Funeral Chapel, Silverton. Graveside services will follow at 4 p.m., at Bethany cemetery, Silverton. Arrangements are by Unger Funeral Chapel.

Marie Annen
February 10, 1931 - May 24, 2008

Joanne was born to Emil and Josephine (Beyer) Bochsler.
Joanne met Victor Annen and they were married at St. Mary’s Church on Oct. 30, 1954.
Joanne and Vic started their life together on a hop farm and dreamed of having seven children.
Vic was seriously injured in an auto accident in 1969. Joanne cared for him until he died of cancer nearly four years later at age 46. Joanne raised their children and worked as a registered nurse.
Survivors: children Jeanne Marie Annen, John Flavius Annen and his wife, Laura; Jerome Victor Annen and his wife, Gayle Goschie; Julie Margaret Embree and her husband, Tom; Suzanne Josephine Kloft and her husband, Tom; William Emil Annen; and Mark Joseph Annen and his fiance, Heather Watkins, all of Oregon; seven grandchildren Dominic and Chase Annen, Alexandra and Zachary Embree, and Elijah, Mackenzie and Hannah Kloft; brother, Robert Bochsler of Idaho; six sisters-in-law and one brother-in-law.
Funeral mass was celebrated May 30, at St. Mary’s, Mount Angel. Memorials to Willamette Valley Hospice. Arrangements are by Unger Funeral Chapel.

Dr. Charles Joseph Zerzan Jr.
December 1, 1921 - May 23, 2008

Dr. Charles Joseph Zerzan, Jr. is survived by his wife, Joan; their 12 children; 30 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and his sister, Mrs. Dorothy Sanford.
Charles was born on Dec. 1, 1921. He grew up in the Portland and Salem areas. During World War II, he served in the China-Burma-India theater. He earned the rank of captain.
He earned a bachelor’s degree at Willamette University. It was there that he met Joan Margaret Kathan; they married on Feb. 7, 1948.
He attended medical school at Marquette University.
Dr. Zerzan re-enlisted in the Army, rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel, and served in many prominent posts including chief of medicine at Rodriguez Army Hospital and U.S. Army medical adviser to the Jordan Arab Army. Dr. Zerzan served as personal physician to President Dwight D. Eisenhower, His Majesty King Hussein bin Talal of Jordan, members of the Supreme Court, and numerous senators and congressmen.
Dr. Zerzan returned to Oregon in 1968 with his family where he served as director of continuing medical education at what is now OHSU. Later he was a partner in the NW Permanente Clinic, Sunnyside Kaiser.
A memorial was held May 29, at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, Portland.

James Eckley
March 29, 1948 - March 9, 2006

James Eckley, 57, Silverton died March 9. Services are set for 1 p.m. Friday at Silverton First Christian Church. Arrangements: Unger Funeral Chapel.
