The Rev. Eugene Eugene Heidt
August 31, 1933 - October 20, 2006

The Rev. Eugene Heidt, 73, of Lebanon died Oct. 20.
He was born in Dickenson, N.D., to Arthur Michael and Monica Sticka Heidt. The family moved to Idaho and then to Mount Angel when he was an infant. Later the family moved to Woodburn.
He entered the Mount Angel Seminary as a high school freshman. He studied there for eight years and then studied for four years at St. Edward’s Seminary in Washington. He was ordained to the priesthood on May 23, 1959. He was assigned to various parishes in the Archdiocese of Portland.
In the late 1980s, he returned to the traditional Latin Mass. He built a chapel in the hills above Silverton, where he ministered to Catholics who wished to return to the traditional teachings of the Catholic Church and the Tridentine Mass. He traveled to Portland and Veneta every Sunday and holy day to day Mass for congregations there.
In September of 2003 after back surgery, he suffered a stroke from which he never fully recovered. Eventually, he moved to Lebanon, where he stayed with a niece, Georgiann Zwetzig, until the time of his death. He continued to offer the Latin Mass privately until the last few months of his life.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Michael, Robert and August Heidt.
Survivors include his siblings, Joseph Heidt, Marie Stobie, Sister M. Eucharia Heidt, OP, Sylvia Sullivan and Caroline Clearman.
Visitation is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at Unger Funeral Chapel, 229 Mill St., Silverton. A Rosary is at 7 p.m. today at the funeral chapel. A Rosary begins at 10 a.m. with Solemn High Mass following tomorrow at St. Thomas Becket Catholic Church, 25269 E. Bolton Road, Veneta. Interment is at 4 p.m. tomorrow at St. Luke’s cemetery, Woodburn. Remembrances: Franciscan Sisters of Christ the King, 1409 E. Meyer Blvd., Kansas City, MO 64131.

Thomas Eusebius Patrick Keegan
December 27, 1934 - October 7, 2006

Thomas Eusebius Patrick Keegan, 71, died Oct. 7.
He was born in Portland to Melvin Aurelius and Elizabeth Ethel Galob Keegan. He lived in Portland until May 1943, when the family moved to Mount Angel. Her served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to July of 1956.
He married Jean Harrington on July 13, 1957, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Mount Angel. They moved to Molalla.
He was a logger for Crown Zellerbach most of his work years. He later became a truck driver. He then owned and operated Keegan’s Korner with his wife.
He was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Molalla.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Joseph.
Survivors include his wife; daughter, Tracy of West Linn; son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Katherine of Oregon City; sons, John, Joseph and James, all of Molalla; daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Dean Fronk of Molalla; foster daughter, Dorothy Mathaeus of Milwaukie; brother, Melvin Keegan Jr. of Silverton; sisters, Mitzi Kokenge of Yakima, Wash., and Patricia Schonbachler of Scotts Mills; and grandchildren, Tyler, Jessica and Lindsey Keegan, Morgan Keegan, Makayla Keegan and Drew Fronk.
Services were held at St. James Catholic Church, Molalla. Interment was at Riverview cemetery, Portland.

Stella DeBel
June 22, 1914 - September 28, 2006

Stella DeBel, 92, died Sept. 28.
She was born in Empire, Mich. She moved to Baker City, Ore., in 1922 with her parents and four siblings.
She married Frank Henry DeBel in 1936 at the age of 22, and started her own family. She and her husband moved to Klamath Falls and bought Twin Girls Grocery Store. They ran the store for 11 years. They then moved to Lorella, Ore., where they owned and operated Lorella Grocery Store. They stayed for seven years before moving to Silverton to own and operate Walts Tavern.
She was a veterinarian assistant and bookkeeper for Silverton Animal Clinic, where she worked for 35 years before retiring at the age of 75.
She enjoyed flowers, gardening, needlework and spending time with family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1964 and a daughter, Mary Jo Zauner, in 2004.
Survivors include her daughter, Fran of Portland; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Private family interment was held at Mount Angel cemetery.

Vera H. Rostad
May 20, 1909 - October 17, 2006

Vera H. Rostad, 97, of Silverton died Oct. 17.
She has lived in Silverton since 1936. She was the oldest of nine brothers and sisters.
She married Alvin B. Rostad in 1928. They had six children.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Varee and Steven Zolotoff of Silverton; son, Alvin Rostad of Dallas, Texas; sisters and brothers-in-law, Lois and Earl Bee of Silverton and Roxanne and Jim Cook of Westminister, Colo.; sister, Betty Jean Sarno of Denver, Colo.; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Services were held at Unger Funeral Chapel, Silverton. Private interment was at Miller cemetery. Remembrances: Mid-Willamette Valley Hospice or Silverton Hospital.

Martin Walsh
August 6, 1921 - September 25, 2006

Martin Walsh, 85, of Silverton died Sept. 25.
He was born in Silverton, the ninth of 11 children, to Thomas and Violet Walsh. He served in the U.S. Air Corp from 1940 to 1945.
He married Lynne Kizer on Jan. 25, 1947, in Pontiac, Mich.
He moved to Oregon in 1988, where he continued his hobby of growing dahlias that he shared with neighbors and friends.
Survivors include his wife; daughters and sons-in-law, Laurel and Bill Carmack of Gales Ferry, Conn., and Robin and James Anstey of Bandon, Ore.; son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Sue Walsh of Portland; brother, Robert Walsh of Ionia, Mich.; sisters, Helen Beyers and Colleen Ayers, both of Ionia; 10 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is set for 2 p.m. Saturday at Silver Mobile Estates, 1307 S. Water St., Silverton.

Edward Douglas
March 26, 1939 - May 11, 2006

Edward Paul Douglas, 67, of Silverton died May 11.
He was born in Chicago, Ill., to Edward Melvin and Helen (Witte) Douglas. He spent most of his life as a teacher and insurance salesman in Illinois. He was an alumnus of the University of Wisconsin – Whitewater, and served in the U.S. Army and Air Force.
He moved to Oregon in 1999, where he married Valleri Douglas on July 8, 2000.
Most recently, he worked for the city of Silverton as a parking enforcement officer as well as a security guard for Capital Manor.
He was an avid fan of the Cubs and the Bears. He loved his family, people and life.
Survivors include his wife; sons, Michael Douglas of Menomonee Falls, Wis., and Matthew Douglas of McKinney, Texas; daughter, Catherine Sterling of Brookfield, Wis.; stepsons, Chris Starling of Bend, Bryan and Devin Starling, both of Klamath Falls; and grandchildren, Erik, Sarah, Hayley and Tyler Douglas, and Ethan Starling.
A memorial service is set for 1 p.m. tomorrow at Unger Funeral Chapel, 229 Mill St., Silverton. Remembrances: MADD, Mother’s Against Drunk Driving.

Orville Frank
August 26, 1918 - May 10, 2006

Orville John Frank, 87, of Silverton died May 10.
He was born in Tolley, N.D., to Otto and Dora (Steinberger) Frank. He graduated from high school in 1936. He served five and a half years in the U.S. Army as a glider pilot in the Air Corps. In 1941, he went to a trade school in Toledo, Ohio. He then went to work for his dad, Otto, at Franks Meat Market. He retired in 1985 from Mount Angel Meat Company.
He married Dorothy M. Bruels on July 12, 1943, in Berthold, N.D. She preceded him in death on Sept. 23, 1991. His brother, Francis, also preceded him in death.
He was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Silverton and Silverton Elks. He enjoyed bowling, golf, fishing and traveling.
Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law, Charleen and Bill Farrell and Louise and Bob Vachter, all of Silverton; son and daughter-in-law, John and Denise Frank of Arizona; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and his companion of 13 years, Evelyn Weeks.
Services were held at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Silverton. Interment was at St. Paul’s cemetery. Remembrances: St. Paul’s Catholic Church or charity of choice.

Cornelius Vandecoevering
August 31, 1923 - May 13, 2006

Cornelius “Neil” Joseph Vandecoevering, 82, of Woodburn died May 13.
He was born in Verboort to John and Josephine Vandecoevering, one of nine children. In 1929, the family moved to Mount Angel.
He served his country during World War II in the Philippines. When he returned from the war, he married Hattie Cecelia Groeger on Nov. 26, 1946. They began their family and soon moved to a small dairy farm near Monitor, where they lived until 1969 when they moved to their hop farm at McKee. They farmed there until 1987 when he retired.
After becoming restless after retiring, he bought timberland in the Colton area and started his new career, forester, which became his passion. Being in the woods, where he said he felt close to God, brought him joy and peace. His faith, wife and children were the most important things in his life.
His life was full of many occupations and involvements. He was a dairyman, builder, hop farmer, row crop farmer and tree farmer. He served on boards at local schools and St. Mary’s Parish in Mount Angel. He was on the original board of directors for Wilco Farmers.
He was preceded in death by a son, Ken, in 1972; his parents; and seven brothers and sisters.
Survivors include his wife; sons and daughters-in-law, Don and Jacquie, John and Janis, Allen and Terri and Fred and Mary; daughters and sons-in-law, Joan and Ron DeConinck, Janet and Bill Rickman and Karen and Shawn Suing; sister, Selma Welter; 18 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Mount Angel. Interment was at Calvary cemetery, Mount Angel. Remembrances: Father Taaffe Foundation or the Father Bernard Youth Center. Arrangements: Unger Funeral Chapel, Silverton.
