Gordon E. Alleman
June 20, 1930 - August 12, 2003
Gordon E. Alleman, 73, of Silverton, died Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2003. He was born in Airlie, Ore., to Ed and Ruth Allemann June 20, 1930, and lived there until 1942. His family moved to the Pratum area in 1942 where he attended school. He graduated from Salem High School in 1948. He started sevice to his country in the U.S. Army in 1950 during the Korean conflict and was stationed in Hanford, Wash. On Sept. 13, 1953, he married
Doris Chittick in Salem, Ore. They moved to the Silverton area in 1958 where they have resided ever since. Gordon worked for Cascade Farm Machinery in Silverton, where he retired after 43 years of service. His hobbies were fishing and gardening. He also was a member of the Silverton First Baptist Church for many years, serving in various capacities. On Aug. 2, 2003, he and Doris were able to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary at their home with family and friends.
Gordon is survived by his wife Doris, in addition to children: Jim Allemann of Kenai, Alaska, Steve Allemann of Mulino, Beverly Geier of Sublimity, Mark Allemann of Salem, and 11 grandchildren.
Services are Friday, 10:30 a.m,. at Silverton First Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Valley View cemetery in Silverton.
Reate Marie Starkey
December 5, 1946 - August 4, 2003
Reate Marie Starkey of Silverton, died Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2003. Reate Marie (Baugher) Starkey was born Dec. 5, 1946, in Gilroy, Calif. to William and Eva Jean Baugher. She moved to Silverton from Portland eight years ago. While in Portland she was a production worker at the East Side Plating Co. She volunteered for the Silverton Community Outreach and attended the Baptist church. She enjoyed arts, crafts and animals. She was preceded in death by her husband, David, in July 1995.
She is survived by her mother Eva Jean Baugher of La Pine, Ore; sons David Haselton and Norman Haselton both of Silverton, William Haselton of La Pine; sister Fern Aragona of Dos Palos, Calif.; brother Ray Baugher of Salem; sister-in-law Cathy Goble of Portland; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Aug. 8 at Unger Funeral Chapel in Silverton. Interment was held at Miller cemetery in Silverton following services.
Mary Borchers
July 10, 1903 - August 11, 2003
Mary Borchers, 100, of Silverton, died Monday, Aug. 11, 2003. Mary was born at home in Cloquet, Minn., July 10, 1903, to Francis and Ursula DeConninck. The family moved to Belgium in 1913 and she attended Catholic school there. Returning to America later, she met and married
Carl Borchers on Sept. 8, 1927, in Tigard. They lived in several towns before settling in Silverton in the late 1950s. Mary was a homemaker but spent many hours helping others by gathering breads and vegetables and other foods to give to those in need. She loved giving to others. She was a member of the Catholic Church.
She is survived by her sons, Francis Borchers of Salem, Donald Borchers of Eugene, Richard Borchers of Salem, and Carl Borchers of Brooks.
She was preceded in death by husband Carl in 1977 and her son Robert Borchers in 1994. Visitation will be held today, 9 a.m.- 5 p.m. at Unger Funeral Chapel in Silverton.
Services will be held Thursday, 11 a.m., at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Gervais. Interment will follow mass at Sacred Heart Catholic cemetery.
Mark E. Keith
February 25, 1952 - June 6, 2003
Mark E. Keith, 51, of Silverton, died June 6, 2003. He was born Feb. 25, 1952, in Portland, Ore., to the late Billy Lee and Donna Rae Keith. The family moved to El Paso, Texas, where he received his education, becoming the senior class president and valedictorian in his graduating class of 1970. Following graduation, he married
his high school sweetheart, Diana Bell. They had two daughters. He moved back to Portland in 1978 to pursue his career in business management in the medical administration field, and resided there until 1993, when he moved with his companion, Terry Distel, to Silverton. He continued to work in the medical field, working for various nursing care facilities.
He is survived by his daughters Danette Lanzafami and Denise Tennimon, both of Silverton; three grandchildren; his companion Terry Distel of Silverton; brother Curtis Keith of El Paso, Texas; former wife Diana Keep of Silverton; many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Memorial services were June 9 at Weddle Funeral Home in Stayton.
Linda Vernice Wederski
March 11, 1944 - June 14, 2003
Linda Vernice Wederski, 59, of Salem, died June 14, 2003. She was born to Allan and Viola Blowers on March 11, 1944 in Long Beach, Calif. She married
James Wederski on Jan. 9, 1981 in Norwalk, Calif. They moved to Salem seven years ago from Las Vegas, Nev. She belonged to the Good Sam Club and enjoyed sewing, cooking and word games.
She is survived by her husband James Wederski Jr. of Salem; sons James Wederski III of Salem, Allan Wederski of Monmouth; sisters Carol Blythe and Doris Rodenbeck, both of Norwalk, Calif.
Services will be held Thursday, 10:30 a.m., at Willamette National cemetery. Interment will follow service. Arrangements were made by Unger Funeral Chapel of Silverton.
Denzel Jacob Brown
December 13, 1910 - June 14, 2003
Denzel Jacob Brown, 92, of Silverton, died June 14, 2003. He was born Dec. 13, 1910 in Highmore, S.D., to Steven and Minnie Brown. He attended South Dakota State College then worked as a carpenter and dairyman for 45 years before retiring to a small farm to raise quarter horses and beef cattle in the Evergreen area of Silverton. He was an avid horseman and an active member of the Salem Saddle Club and Marion County Mounted Posse. As a deputy sheriff in the Governor’s Guard, he was proud to escort several Oregon Governors in festive Salem parades, particularly Governor Tom McCall.
He is survived by his wife, Lucille Brown of Silverton, whom he married
April 10, 1937; son Doug Brown of Silverton; daughter and son-in-law Bonnie and Bud Logan of Silverton; daughter Donnise Brown of Portland; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A private memorial service will be held in July. Contributions may be made to Davenport House, 930 Oak St., Silverton, OR 97381.
A memorial will be installed in the Davenport House garden in memory of Denzel Brown. Arrangements were made by Unger Funeral Chapel of Silverton.
Mary M. Kohler
October 16, 1918 - June 14, 2003
Mary M. Kohler, 84, of Mt. Angel, died June 14, 2003. She was born to Rapheal and Katherine Miller on October 16, 1918 in St. Vincent, N. D. She married
Edward George Kohler on November 20, 1945; he passed away on February 1, 1999. They moved to Missoula, where Mary worked as a nurse’s assistant, retiring from St. Patrick’s Hospital in 1980. Mary was a longtime member of the Catholic Daughters and a devoted member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church were she served as a Eucharistic Minister. For the last two-and-a-half years of her life she lived in Mt. Angel to be near her son David’s family. She enjoyed knitting, sewing, cooking dancing, and playing cards with her friends. She especially enjoyed her family.
She is survived by her sons Dave of Mt. Angel, Fr. Ed of Browning, Mont., Allen of Spokane, Wash., Monte of Seattle, Wash.; sisters Rose Landies of Mandan, N.D. and Eleanor Schrader of Bismarck, N.D.; brother Ralph Miller of Rugby, N.D.; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services and interment will be held at St. Francis Catholic Church, Missoula, Mont.
Contributions may be made to Little Flower School, Blackfoot Reservation P.O. Box 519, Browning, MT. 59417. Arrangements were made by Unger Funeral Chapel of Silverton.
Vella Claudine Roberts West
October 26, 1912 - June 12, 2003
Vella Claudine Roberts West, 90, of Jefferson, died June 12, 2003. Born in Berryville, Ark., Oct. 26, 1912, the daughter of Samuel and Beulah (Smith) Littrell, she lived in Arkansas, Kansas, California, Washington and Oregon. She loved to crochet rugs and travel. She lived for the last two years with her daughter and son-in-law, Fran and Keith Rude in Jefferson, Ore.
She was married
to Frank Lee Roberts in 1929. He preceded her in death in 1973. She married
Tom West in Berryville, Ark.; he preceded her in death in 1991. She was also preceded in death by a son, Herbert Lee Roberts, and a daughter, Dixie Lee Bradhurst.
Survivors include her sons Robert Roberts of Appleton, Wash., Frankie Roberts of Silverton, Donald Roberts and Jimmie Roberts both of Topeka, Kan.; daughters Vella Kay Roscoe of Berryville, Ark., Fran Fay Rude of Jefferson; 20 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were June 14 at Silverton cemetery. Arrangements were made by Unger Funeral Chapel of Silverton.
Patricia Ford Mullins
September 13, 1925 - June 11, 2003
Patricia Ford Mullins, 77, of Sublimity, died June 11, 2003. Born in Tulsa, Okla., on Sept. 13, 1925, she was the daughter of Charles and Anna Ford. She graduated from Colton Union High School in California. During WWII, she worked for the U.S. government as a POW camp officer and later was a secretary for an attorney. She married
Robert Mullins in Colton on March 9, 1945. They came to Oregon in 1970. She was a member of the Methodist Church. She was a Worthy Advisor of Rainbow. She enjoyed horseback riding and playing golf.
She is survived by her husband Robert of Sublimity; daughter Patricia Ann Bishop, also of Sublimity; five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Private services were held Monday at Union Hill cemetery in Sublimity.
Arrangements were made by Unger Funeral Chapel of Silverton.
Matie Richie
July 5, 1913 - April 12, 2003
Matie Richie, 89, of Mt. Angel, died April 12, 2003. She was born in Killian, Ore. to Clyde and Ivy (Long) Ainsworth July 5, 1913. She lived in Southern California for many years before moving to Stayton in 1990 and later to Mt. Angel. She worked in retail clothing sales. Her husband, Chester Richie, preceded her in death in 1990.
Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Janice Kauffman of Stayton, and Larry and Bobbie Kauffman of El Cajon, Calif.; sister Iva Kirchem of Oregon City; 10 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
Services were Tuesday at Unger Funeral Chapel in Silverton. Interment was at Lone Oak cemetery in Stayton.
Betty Lou Harrington
January 5, 1929 - April 14, 2003
Betty Lou Harrington, 74, of Silverton, died April 14, 2003. She was born Jan. 5, 1929, in Columbus, Mont., and has lived the past 56 years in the Silverton area.
She enjoyed gardening and taking care of her animals. She was preceded in death by her husband Robert on April 16, 1989. She is survived by a daughter, Diane Mooney of Jefferson; sons, Rick Bolme of Portland, Bernie and Lanny Bolme, both of Salem, Dean Harrington of Salem and Duane and Harrington of Medford; three sisters, 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
At her request no services will be held. The family suggests contributions to Silverton Hospital.
Arrangements were by Unger Funeral Chapel, Silverton.
Bobbie B. Johnson
February 6, 2003
Bobbie B. Johnson, 77, died in El Mirage, Ariz., Feb. 6, 2003. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Jim and Celeste Roth of Silverton; sons and daughters-in-law, Bill and Tami, Joe and Joanie, John and Mardell; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A prayer service will be held Feb. 15, 1 p.m., at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Salem, followed by private interment at Willamette National cemetery, Portland.
Mildred Mae Beddoe-Larue

Mildred “Sissy” Mae Beddoe-Larue, 77, of Salem but recently of Silverton, died Jan. 29, 2003. Mildred was also formerly of Honolulu, Hawaii. She is survived by nieces: Robin Zinser-Rankin, Sari Ashley and Victoria Engman; nephews, Scott and Craig Rankin; sister-in-law, Norma Rankin; several great nieces and nephews and many dear and loving friends.
Memorial services will be held Tuesday, Feb. 18, at 1 p.m., at New Hope Church, 4963 Swegle Road, NE, in Salem.
Contributions may be made to either New Hope Church or to Willamette Valley Hospice. Arrangements were made by Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.
Anna R. Wiener-Zellner

Anna R. Wiener-Zellner, 95, of Gervais, died Feb. 8, 2003. She lived in the Portland area before moving to Gervais where she spent most of her life. She was a farmer raising chickens and berries. She also enjoyed traveling and the outdoors. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Gervais and St. Rita’s Altar Society.
She is survived by her brother, John Zellner of Gervais; sister, Eva Kudna of Salem.
Visitation and rosary were Feb. 10. Funeral Mass was Feb. 11 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Gervais. Interment followed at Sacred Heart cemetery, Gervais.
John Arnold Skirvin
October 29, 1940 - February 6, 2003
John Arnold Skirvin, 62, of Silverton, died Feb. 6, 2003. He was born Oct. 29, 1940 in Silverton. He graduated from Silverton Union High School in 1958 and Oregon State University College of Pharmacy in 1963. Over his working career he owned and operated several businesses in Silverton, including Steelhammer Drug and Homeseekers Real Estate Office. He was involved in management positions as an employee of Schering-Plough, and was the director of two alcohol treatment rehabilitation centers in Portland and Boise, Idaho. The majority of his career was spent interacting with the community members through work in retail pharmacies. He most recently was the Woodburn pharmacy manager for Wal-Mart.
In 1963 he married
his wife, Nancy, who survives. He is also survived by his daughter, Julie; sons, Peter, John, David; grandson, Alexander, sister, Sara Nietling; and brother, Frederic.
Memorial services will be Saturday, 2 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Silverton. There will be a private interment following. Remembrances in lieu of flowers can be made in his name to the Oregon State Foundation or the Silverton High School Alumni Scholarship fund. Arrangements by Unger Funeral Chapel of Silverton.
