Services were held for Wayne Carl Follis, 73, of Burns.
He was born, raised and educated in the Stayton area, and was a self-employed truck driver. He married
Phylis on March 24, 1958.
Survivors include his children, Michael Hines of Sumner, Wash., and Darrelyn “Patsy” Dunn of Anderson, Calif.; sister, Marion Zuber of Stayton; and two grandchildren.

James L. Basl
June 20, 1929 - June 4, 2002
James “Jim” L. Basl, 72, of Stayton died June 4.
He was born and lived his entire life in Stayton. He worked for Stayton Canning Company for 25 years and was also a farmer. He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Sublimity, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5638 and the Sublimity Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed playing cards, fishing and hunting.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Johnson.
His wife, Virginia Miller, whom he married
on April 28, 1956, survives.
Other survivors include his daughters, Juanita Conaway of Aumsville, Beverly Dulley of Lebanon, Elaine Tinney and Donna Lue Robins, both of Lyons, Eileen Turek of Bend and Yvonne Amstutz of Corvallis; sons, Marvin of Lyons and Joe of Phoenix, Ariz.; brothers, Albert of Sublimity, Leo of Mill City, Tom of Stayton and Lawrence of Salem; sister, Lorene Haverland of Bend; 16 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Dorothy Martin Wilt
April 24, 1910 - June 4, 2002
Dorothy Martin Wilt, 92, of Turner died June 4.
She was born in Los Angeles, Calif., and moved to Marion in 1946. She graduated from Chemeketa College of Nursing and worked at T.B. Hospital for 18 years and at Fairview for five years. She moved to Turner in 1952. She enjoyed oil painting, gardening, glass etching and sewing. She was a member of a bowling team and a writing group. She joined Turner Christian Church and was baptized in 1979.
Her husband, Homer, whom she married
in 1928, preceded her in death in 1967.
Survivors include her sons, Jim of Mesa, Ariz., Donald of Salem and Frank of Turner; brother, Carl Carter of Torrance, Calif.; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Turner Christian Church. Remembrances: Turner Retirement Home. Arrangements: Howell-Edwards-Doerksen with Rigdon-Ransom Funeral Directors, Salem.
Mary J. Voltin

Mary J. Voltin, 97, of Lyons died June 5.
She was born in Scio and moved to a farm in Lyons in 1940, where she lived until her death. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Lyons, and enjoyed quilting and gardening.
Her husband, Ben, whom she married
on Aug. 17, 1938, preceded her in death on May 14, 1997. She was also preceded in death by sons, David in 1939 and Albert in 1947.
Survivors include her sons, John and Paul, both of Lyons, and Bernie of Salem; daughter, Margaret Foster of Lakewood, Wash.; sister, Sister Clarina Thomas of Beaverton; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Rita M. Harris
May 13, 1925 - August 7, 2002
Rita M. Harris, 77, of Stayton died Aug. 7.
She was born in Central City, Neb., and was a customer service representative for San Jose Water Works Co., for 20 years. She moved to Stayton in 1978 from Los Gatos, Calif. She enjoyed gardening, reading and traveling.
Her husband, Raymond, whom she married
on April 12, 2001, survives.
Other survivors include her sons, Dennis Volpa of Stayton and Bruce Volpa of Aptos, Calif.; daughter, Marcia Gecvin of Issaquah, Wash.; and six grandchildren.
A memorial service were held at her residence in Stayton. Remembrances: American Cancer Society. Arrangements: Weddle Funeral Home, Stayton.
Celia Ramirez Vargas
April 7, 1922 - August 1, 2002
Celia Ramirez Vargas, 80, of Jefferson died Aug. 1.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul, who passed away Sept. 15, 1998. Her brother Francisco Ramirez and sister Juanita Zapata also preceded her in death. A brother, Piel Ramiriz, lives in Florida.
Survivors include her children Roger, Alfred, Felix, Jessie, Martin and Rick, Emma Contreras, Sally Fernandez, Eva Sparks, Sara Bryan, Lucy Ramirez, Olga Clancy, Rita Harlan and Evelyn Luna; and more than 100 grandchildren and more than 40 great-grandchildren.
Interment was at St. Luke cemetery in Woodburn.
Fraser MacCartney
December 18, 1911 - August 8, 2002
Fraser Miller MacCartney, 90, of Sublimity died Aug. 8 from pancreatic cancer.
He was born in Kilmarnock, Scotland, and immigrated to the United States in his early teens. He attended high school in Mansfield, Ohio, where he excelled in wrestling, achieving a state championship. Upon graduation, he continued his studies in horticulture at the New York Botanical Gardens, and was eventually accepted as an exchange student to the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew, England. He was a gardener at the Walker Estate in Istanbul, Turkey.
He then served in the U.S. Army Infantry during World War II from 1943 to 1946 throughout the European Theatre. After the war, he returned to the U.S., where he continued working as a gardener in Pennsylvanaia and Texas before settling in Toledo, Ohio, where he formed MacCartney Brothers Florists with his younger brother Joe. He also taught at the University of Toledo.
He moved to the West Coast in 1960, working for the city of Salem, Oregon Parka Department and retiring from the North Clackamas School District as grounds and turf foreman.
He was a member of the Albany Scottish Bagpipe Band, Clan MacLeay Bagpipe Band of Portland and Oregon Defense Force Bagpipe Band, which played at President Reagan’s inauguration parade on Jan. 20, 1981. He was a member of the Oak Hills Presbyterian Church.
He was preceded in death by his siblings, Jim, Bill, Ian, Tom, Joe Norval, Margaret and Nessie.
His wife, Vida Hawkins, whom he married
on Dec. 12, 1942, survives.
Other survivors include his son, Fraser, Jr., of Salem; daughter, Heather of Montrose, Calif.; and one grandson.
Services were held at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home, Portland. Interment was at Willamette National cemetery, Portland. Remembrances: The Oregon Garden, Silverton. Arrangements: Restlawn Memory Gardens and Funeral Home, Salem.
Marian Schmidt
May 8, 1927 - August 6, 2002
Marian “Sandy” J. Schmidt, 75, of Aumsville died Aug. 6.
She graduated from high school in Portland. She moved to Salem in 1978 from California. She was a homemaker, and for a short time, worked as a legal secretary. She enjoyed camping and her grandchildren.
Her husband, George, whom she married
on Nov. 23, 1947, survives.
Other survivors include her son, Kurt of Salem; daughters, Linda Miller of Palos Verdes, Calif., Darcy Fast of Jefferson, Trina Woodring of Clackamas, and Tracy Chapman of Portland; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Cryptside services and entombment was at 1 p.m. today at Belcrest Memorial Park, Salem.

Paul Edward Ryan
June 18, 1963 - March 5, 2005
Paul Edward Ryan, 41, of Silverton, died Saturday, March 5, 2005.
Paul was born to Joseph and Leona Ryan June 18, 1963, in The Dalles. He came to Silverton 27 years ago and enjoyed working along side his foster brother Craig Fournier at Silverton Forest Products. He later worked at the Towne House Restaurant.
He was a childlike person who enjoyed fishing, the outdoors, TV sports and his dog Rocky. He was a kind person who kept smiling in the face of many adversities.
He will be greatly missed by his adopted family.
Paul is survived by his foster mother, Peggy Fournier of Silverton; foster sisters, Cori and husband Frank Beathke of Silverton and Jae Walker of Salem; foster brothers Cort Fournier of Silverton and Craig Fournier of Mount Angel; his nieces Sarah and Amanda Beathke; and nephew Larry Fournier.
Paul’s son, Paul Jr., and his father and mother, Joseph and Leona, preceded him in death.
Private family services will be held. Private interment will take place at Bethany cemetery.
