Frances Schafer
October 24, 2003 - January 1, 1900
Frances E. "Betty" Schafer, 86, of Portland died Oct. 25.
She was born in Montana, but grew up in Portland, graduating from Cleveland High School and Marylhurst College.
She was a professional military wife and homemaker, moving when her husband was stationed in various countries and throughout the U.S. She moved to Stayton in 1966, to Salem in 1997 and to Portland in 2003. She was active in Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts when her family was growing up. She was a born-again Christian.
Her husband, August "Gus" Schafer, U.S. Army (Ret.), whom she married
July 12, 1941, preceded her in death in 1994.
Survivors include her daughter Fran Johnson of Portland; son, Robert "Bob" Schafer of Portland and Charles H. Schafer of Stafford, Va.; brothers, Edward "Ned" Uffelman of Sublimity and Don Uffelman of Brownsville, Ore.; and two grandsons.
A graveside service will be held Thursday, 1:30 p.m. at Willamette National cemetery in Portland. Contributions may be made to Salvation Army, P.O. William E. Ayers
December 10, 1932 - June 11, 2004
Bill E. Ayers, 71, of Lyons died June 11.
He was born in Lyons and lived there all his life. He worked at Burkland Lumber Co., and also at Hardwood Components. He and his wife, Betsy, were park hosts at John Neal Park in Lyons. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints – Gates Branch, and enjoyed fishing, hunting, woodworking and playing games like cribbage, Aggravation and Sorry.
His wife, Betsy Christensen, who he married
on June 17, 1961, survives.
Other survivors include his sons and daughters-in-law, Donald and Belinda Ayers of Stayton and Darril and Donna Ayers of Mehama; son, David Ayers of Mehama; daughters, Debra Ayers and Delores Hays-Ayers, both of Mehama; sister, Dorothy Stockwell of Lyons; and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a grandson.
Services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints – Stayton Branch, 1400 Western Ave., Stayton, 503-769-2097. Remembrances: Mid-Willamette Valley Hospice or American Heart Association. Arrangements: Weddle Funeral Home, Stayton.
William E. Ayers

Bill E. Ayers, 71, of Lyons died June 11.

Carol J. Brown
January 4, 1936 - December 1, 2004
Carol J. Brown, 68, of Stayton, died Dec. 1, 2004.
Carol was born Jan. 4, 1936, in Camp Crook, S.D. After graduating from college she taught school for a few years.
She was married
to John Brown on Dec. 23, 1957. They lived in Montana, where they raised five children. Carol moved to Miles City, Mont., where she was the office manager at Eastern Montana Industries for about 15 years. She retired and moved to Stayton in 2004.
Brown was a member of the Eastern Star Miles City Garden Club and the Custer County Council on Aging. She enjoyed crocheting, cooking, gardening and sewing.
Survivors include her mother, Roberta M. Flasted of Ogden, Utah; sons, Neil A. Brown of Manderson, Wyo., Johnny R. Brown of Gray Bull, Wyo., and Bob. A. Brown of Portland; daughters, Candi M. Brown of Portland and Laurie L. Christopherson of Stayton; sisters, Carmen Havholm of Boise, Idaho, and Arzella K. Olson of Ogden; and eight grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father, Albert Phelps.
Services were private.
Edd Jacoby
August 8, 1911 - April 15, 2002
Edd Jacoby of Stayton died April 15 at Marian Estates.
He was born in Kenmare, N.D., and joined the Civilian Conservation Corp in 1934, where he worked in northern Minnesota until 1935. During this time, he also worked in a coal mine with his brother. He moved to Oregon in 1936, living in Silverton, on McCully Mountain above Lyons, and near Mehama before settling in Stayton in 1945. He was a home builder in Stayton for more than 25 years, building his own home and his son’s. He enjoyed working with wood to make furniture and decorations, which he used to assemble one of Stayton’s largest displays of Christmas decorations. He also enjoyed gardening, baking, bowling, reading and traveling. He was a self-taught artist who worked with everything from oil paints to driftwood, and later a wood-burning tool. He was a member of the Santiam Historical Society and the Knights of Columbus, serving as a past grand knight.
His wife, Luella Thoma, whom he married
on Aug. 19, 1950, preceded him in death in 1991.
Survivors include his son, Alan of Salem; sister, Martha Andrews of Woodburn; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Services were held at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Stayton. Remembrances: Knights of Columbus.
Leo Edward Odenthal
June 20, 1903 - April 20, 2002
Leo Edward Odenthal, 98, of Aumsville died Saturday.
He was born and raised in Sublimity, and lived most of his life in Aumsville. He belonged to the Knights of Columbus and the Catholic Order of Foresters, and enjoyed eating chicken sandwiches at A&W; Restaurant in Stayton.
He married
Mabel Fery in 1930; she died in 1970. He later married
Dora Pearl Bibler; she died in 1991. He was also preceded in death by a son, Dean, and nine brothers and sisters.
Survivors include his daughter, Marlene Hartmann of Aumsville; stepdaughter, Leita Thomas; stepsons, David and Sam Bibler; 11 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
Services were held at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Stayton. Remembrances: St. Mary Catholic School, 1066 N. Sixth Ave., Stayton, OR 97383. Arrangements: Weddle Funeral Home, Stayton.
Leola Wilkins
October 31, 1922 - April 14, 2002
Leola Mae Wilkins, 79, of Sublimity died April 14.

Maxwell Joseph Uffelman
August 5, 1977 - April 20, 2002
Maxwell Joseph Uffelman, 24, Portland died Saturday.
He was born in John Day, and moved to Stayton as a toddler. He graduated from St. Mary Elementary School and from Regis High School in 1995. He was an altar boy at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Stayton, played baseball and basketball, and reached the rank of Order of the Arrow in Boy Scouts. He moved to Portland after high school, where he worked as a retail manager for Exit Real World. He had just begun a career modeling clothing and equipment for Nike and other sports-related industries. He enjoyed skiing, snowboarding, road trips and dancing.
Survivors include his parents, Joseph and Marcia Uffelman of Stayton; brothers, Edwin, Christopher, Shane and Phillip, all of Stayton; sisters, Joy Orhn of Wyoming, Minn., Joleene Uffelman of Bend, and Janice and Joselyn Uffelman, both of Stayton; and grandparents, Margaret and Edward Uffelman of Stayton and Janice Denton of Salem.
A Funeral Mass was held at 11 a.m. today at Immaculate Conception. Remembrances: Santiam Catholic Schools Campaign, Immaculate Conception Church or a charity of choice. Arrangements: Weddle Funeral Home, Stayton.
Gladys Mildred Hoagland
June 12, 1901 - May 22, 2002
Gladys Mildred Hoagland, 100, of Scio died May 22.
She was born near Scio in Shelburn, and lived in the area her entire life. She was an avid volunteer in the Scio community, and a member of the Leone Rebekah Lodge and the Scio Historical Society. She enjoyed oil painting and flowers, arranging flowers for weddings and ceremonies.
Her husband, Hobart, whom he married
in 1921, preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by a son, Harold; granddaughter, Kathy Fox; and sisters, Leona Frankenberry and Sylvia Hassler.
Survivors include her daughter, Peggy Rissman of Warrenton; son, William of Olympia, Wash.; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was held at Miller cemetery, Scio.
William H. Krauss
May 25, 1930 - May 30, 2002
William “Bill” H. Krauss, 72, of Scio died May 30.
He was born in Selma, Ore., where he worked in the logging industry. After moving to Salem, he became a printer for the state of Oregon General Services Department, retiring as Composition Services manager in 1989. His lifelong passion was trains, and he designed and built Sweetbrier Park and a 2-foot gauge railroad on 18 acres in the Scio area. The park is now used for family and company picnics, and is a popular pumpkin patch. He was a patriotic America and Oregonian, and was an avid newsreader with a wide range of interests.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Marie; children, W. Fritz Krauss, Susan Clark, Karen Anderson and Teresa Spalding; and four grandchildren.
Private services were held but memories of Bill and the park would be welcome at: Sweetbrier Park, P.O. Box 193, Stayton, OR 97383-0193.
Shirley Mae Robinette
July 17, 1924 - June 4, 2002
Shirley Mae Robinette, 77, of Gates died June 4.
She was born in Riverside, Idaho, and moved to Oregon in 1951. She lived in Stayton, Mehama, Mill City and St. Helens before settling in Gates 20 years ago. She was a cook at the Santiam Starlight Room in Stayton for 10 years, a sales person for the Minnesota Woolen Mill for many years, and spent six years working for Phillips Industries in Stayton. She volunteered with the Marion and Linn county sheriff’s offices, VOICE and the Neighborhood Watch Program. She was also an advocate and president of the Canyon Crisis Center board of directors and the co-coordinator of the grief support and bereavement committee in Mill City. She was a member of the Eagles Lodge in Gates, and was an antique collector and dealer. She enjoyed genealogy research, going to the beach and her family.
Her husband, Dallas, whom she married
on Aug. 31, 1941, preceded her in death on July 7, 1990.
Survivors include her sons, Jerry of Eugene and Frank of Springville, Utah; daughter, Stephanie Kay Robinette of Salem; brothers, Richard Hollinger of Mill City and Steve Hollinger of Mt. Angel; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at Weddle Funeral Home, Stayton. Remembrances: Women’s Crisis Center, Mill City.
