Richard Dean Boes
January 26, 1977 - June 13, 2003
Richard “Rick” Dean Boes, 26, of Stayton died June 13.
He was born in Albany and lived all of his life in Salem and Mehama. He graduated from South Salem High School in 1995 and then served in the U.S. Army. He worked at Classique Marble and Granite in Salem.
He is survived by his parents, John and Teresa; grandparents; siblings; uncles; aunts; cousins and extended family.
Visitation will be held tomorrow, noon – 7 p.m. at Weddle Funeral Home, 1777 N. Third Ave., Stayton. Graveside services will be held Friday, 11 a.m. at Lone Oak cemetery, Stayton.
Stanley L. Russell
September 15, 1923 - August 12, 2003
Stanley L. Russell, 79, of Sheridan, Ore., died Aug. 12.
He was born in Sublimity to the late Harold and Elizabeth Doerfler Russell. He was raised and received his education at Marion and graduated from high school in Aumsville. During World War II, he served with the U.S. Navy and was with Admiral Nimitz’s staff on Guam as a radioman.
Following his discharge, he returned to the area and attended Pacific University in Forest Grove. He then went on to teach high school, teaching for three years at Neahkanie High School near Tillamook, then for more than 20 years at Hayward High School in Hayward, Calif.
While he was in college, he was inducted in the NAIA Hall of Fame for football. His record still stands for his longest punt from the line of scrimmage of 72 yards. He is also in the Pacific University Hall of Fame for football and was voted All-American second team.
He had permanently resided in this area since the mid-1980s, working as a substitute teacher and during the summer months with his brother in his business, Russell Landscaping Co. He also was a pilot and enjoyed flying gliders as well as prop planes. He was a member of the Salem Eagles Lodge and enjoyed dancing.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Wilburn, in 2001.
Survivors include his son, Patrick of Kallispel, Mont.; daughter, Stephanie Russell of Auburn, Calif.; and brothers, Gene of Sublimity and Eldon of Salem.
Services were held at Weddle Funeral Home, Stayton. Interment was at Marion Friends cemetery, Marion. Remembrances: Alzheimer’s Foundation.
Margaret Mary Pallas
July 13, 1913 - August 14, 2003
Margaret Mary Pallas, 90, of Sublimity died Aug. 14.
She was born in Wilkin County, Minn., moved to Gervais in 1960 and later lived in Salem. She resided in Sublimity for the past three years. She was a cook for more than 20 years for Mark Armbrust in Fargo, N.D. She later cooked in Pioneer Village in Salem from 1980-2000, and while living there, attended the non-denominational church at Pioneer Village.
She was a member of the Salvation Army Home League for more than 20 years. She enjoyed crocheting for her children.
Her husband, Arnold, whom she married
in 1931, preceded her in death in 1964. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Judith; sons, Ray and Leroy; three brothers; and five sisters.
Survivors include her sons, Keith of Turner, Terence of Anchorage, Alaska, and Dennis of Scotts Mills; daughters, Beth Lynch of Winston-Salem, N.C., Joyce Lordeman of Fargo, N.D., and Carol Miller of Aumsville; sisters, Pearl Johnson of Woodburn and Leona Mason of Dallas; 17 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Visitation will take place today, 1 – 5 p.m. and Thursday, 1 – 7 p.m. at Weddle Funeral Home, 1777 Third Ave., Stayton. Services will be held Friday, 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Belcrest Memorial Park, Salem. Remembrances: American Diabetes Association.
Chuck A. Pruett
July 5, 1955 - August 15, 2003
Chuck A. Pruett, 48, of Stayton died Aug. 15 of cancer.
He was born in Carlisle, Ark., and moved to Oregon as an infant. He lived in Jefferson and Marion before moving to Stayton 14 years ago. He served in the U.S. Army.
He drove a truck for Freres Lumber Co. for 10 years and later owned and operated a dump truck. He attended Cascade View Free Methodist Church in Stayton and enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He was preceded in death by his father, Lintford, in 1993, and brother, Don, in 1986.
His wife, Juanita Hartman, whom he married
on March 8, 1980, survives.
Other survivors include his mother, Carol Pruett of Turner; daughters, Rebecca Arnold of Salem and Jessica Pruett of Stayton; son, Casey of Stayton; brothers, Gary of Turner, Doug of Aumsville and Randy of Salem; sisters, Clodean Arthur of Tigard and Judy Lee of Bend; and one granddaughter.
Services were held at Weddle Funeral Home, Stayton. Interment was at Lone Oak cemetery, Stayton. Arrangements: Willamette Valley Hospice.
Elizabeth Welter
July 19, 1904 - June 30, 2003
Elizabeth (Boedigheimer) Welter, 98, of Lewiston, Idaho died June 30.
She was born in Stayton to Bruno and Katherine Boedigheimer. She grew up and attended schools in Stayton.
She married
Nicholas Welter on Sept. 13, 1923 in Sublimity, and later lived in Priest River and Spirit Lake, Idaho, moving to Colton in 1943. After her husband’s death in 1954 she returned to Stayton. She remained in Stayton until 1981, when she moved to Lewiston to be near her children.
She was a homemaker and head cook at St. Mary Catholic School in Stayton. She was a member of the senior citizen center, serving as president. While living in Colton she was a member of the Altar Society at St. Gall’s. In Lewiston, she was a member of St. Stanislaus Church and a 50-year member of the Catholic Daughters.
She enjoyed sewing, crocheting and crafts, and was a member of St. Joseph’s Auxiliary Guild in the 1980s. For many years, she was a master at making homemade wines.
She was preceded in death by her husband; and five children, Marcella Philley, Arlene Welter, LeRoy Welter, Lewis Welter and Kathleen Welter.
Survivors include her sons, Vern of Missoula, Mont., Marvin of Lewiston, and Don of Clarkston, Wash.; daughters, Darlene Meyer of Colton and Loreen Plemmons of McMinnville; 28 grandchildren; and 55 great-grandchildren.
A memorial Mass was held at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Stayton. Inurnment followed at St. Mary’s cemetery, Stayton. Remembrances: American Cancer Society. Arrangements: Vassar-Rawls Funeral Home, Lewiston, Idaho.
Raymond J. Welter
July 28, 1913 - October 6, 2003
Raymond J. Welter, 90, of Sublimity died Oct. 6.
He was born in Biggar, Sask., Canada, and moved to the United States in 1916. He was a logger and then a construction worker as a roller operator. He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church and the Operating Engineers Local No. 701, and enjoyed hunting and fishing.
His wife, Loretta Kerber, whom he married
on July 5, 1937, survives.
Other survivors include his sons, Roy of Costa Mesa Calif., and Donald of Salem; daughters, Joyce Call of San Jose, Calif., and Judy Holm of Stayton; brother, Harry of Stayton; sisters, Vivian Johnson of Galice, Ore., and Marquerite Hennebeck of Medford; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Services were held at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Sublimity. Interment was at St. Mary cemetery, Stayton. Remembrances: Regis High School or Willamette Valley Hospice. Arrangements: Weddle Funeral Home, Stayton.
Ferdinand Boniface Lockner
October 11, 1909 - July 13, 2003
Ferdinand Boniface Lockner, 93, died July 13 of prostate cancer.
He was born in Jordan, Ore. to Anton and Anna Lackner. He drove a lumber truck before moving to Seattle, Wash., where he worked for more than 30 years for Del-Teet Furniture. For 70 years, he greeted parishioners at his local church.
He loved sports and excelled as a centerfielder for the Vitamilk Seattle Fast-pitch Softball Championship team.
Later in life, he became an expert lawnbowler, spending countless days lawnbowling and playing cards at Woodland Park Lawnbowling Club.
His first wife, Blanche, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Milly; son, Ed; sisters, Madeline Lackner and Hattie Gerard; brother, Mike Lackner; and one granddaughter.
Services were held at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Jordan. Arrangements: Beck’s Funeral Home.
Robert L. Doerfler
February 23, 1937 - October 7, 2003
Robert L. Doerfler, 66, of Sublimity died Oct. 7.
He was born in Sublimity to Leonard and Dorothy Doerfler. He attended St. Boniface High School, where he excelled in football and played in the East-West Shrine Game. He farmed grass seed his entire life and also owned a machinery business.
He married
Darlen Ogren in 1962; she preceded him in death in 1979. He married
MaryLee Provence in 1982; she passed away two years ago.
Survivors include his sons, Kent of Sublimity and Kevin of Stayton; daughter, Amy Doerfler of Portland; brother, Richard of Bend; sisters, Carole Dombrowsky of Sublimity and Judy Dozier of Stayton; and six grandchildren.
A Mass was held at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Stayton. Interment was at St. Boniface cemetery, Sublimity. Remembrances: St. Mary Grade School or Regis High School. Arrangements: Weddle Funeral Home, Stayton.
Gordon W. McMorris
November 28, 1925 - October 6, 2003
Gordon W. McMorris, 77, of Mill City died Oct. 6.
He was born in Silverton to Cleo and Vivian (Wilson) McMorris. He graduated from Salem High School in 1943 and served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1947 during World War II. He resided in Salem until 1953 when he moved to Mill City.
He was a mill worker at Simpson Plywood in Lyons, and in 1969 was employed at Nicolai Door Co. in Portland, retiring in 1987. He resided in Mill City until 1972, when he moved to Beavercreek, Ore. In April 1992, he moved back to Mill City.
He enjoyed fast pitch softball and played as a shortstop and hitter for several state championship teams, including Mill City in 1953, Salem and Portland. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, stamp collecting, playing bridge, golfing and raising parakeets.
He was preceded in death by his parents and stepfather, Clarence Quartier.
His wife, Betty Lou Cree, whom he married
on May 8, 1955, survives.
Other survivors include his son, Gordon of Silverton; daughter, Tamara Rodby of Salem; half-brother, Wayne McMorris of Spokane, Wash.; half-sister, Cleta McMorris of Salem; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Nicholas Allan Churchill
June 2, 1982 - October 8, 2003
Nicholas Allan Churchill, 21, died Oct. 8.
He was born in Salem and raised in Stayton, graduating from Regis High School in 2000. He was currently in his second year at Chemeketa Community College working toward a communication degree. While in high school, he played football and baseball. He was working part-time at the Chevron Station in Stayton. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Stayton, and enjoyed music, camping and snowboarding.
Survivors include his parents, Marilee and Jim Mack of Stayton and Michael and Kristi Churchill of Stayton; brother, Ed Churchill of Stayton; half-brothers, Matthew Churchill and Caden Churchill, both of Stayton; and grandparents, Phyllis Wilson of Salem, Frank and Mary Mack of Stayton, and Jim and Louise Churchill of Reno, Nev.
