Lavada Sinclair Rowell

Lavada Sinclair Rowell, 89, of Scio, passed away Nov. 25, 2007 in Scio.
She was born April 19, 1918 in Pinebluff, Ark.
Family and friends invited to join in a celebration of Lavada’s life at noon Saturday at Mennonite Church in Scio.
All are welcome to join the graveside service which will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 1, at Jefferson cemetery.
Robert Oscar Brown
May 14, 1943 - February 8, 2003
Robert Oscar Brown, 59, of Turner died Feb. 8.
He was born in Blacksburg, Va., to Oscar Brown, Jr., and Reba Allen. He attended schools in Virginia, Dupont High School in Old Hickory, Tenn., and graduated from Father Ryan High School. He was active in teen programs at St. Joseph’s Church in Madison, Tenn. He also attended St. Bernard Seminary in Cullman, Ala., but chose to pursue a career with Time Freight Trucking in Nashville, Tenn. He was involved with the trucking industry for many years, including the Alaska Pipeline, until his most recent career in agriculture. He was past president of Marion County Master Gardeners.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Glenn Brown.
Survivors include his sisters, Nora Hadley of Coppell, Texas, and Veronica and Pamela Brown, both of Nashville, Tenn.; brother, Matthew Brown of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; and stepmother, Marilyn W. Brown.
Memorial services were held at Howell-Edwards-Doerksen with Rigdon-Ransom Funeral Home. Remembrances: Marion County Master Gardeners, the American Cancer Society or the Turner Fire Department.
Camila S. Aguilar
May 3, 1913 - February 15, 2003
Camila S. Aguilar, 89, of Turner died Feb. 15.
She was born in Reynosa, Mexico. She moved to Alamo, Texas in 1944 and to Oregon in 1959. She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of God - Seventh-day. She enjoyed sewing, quilting and farming.
Her husband, Manuel Aguilar, whom she married
on July 11, 1935, preceded her in death in March 2000. She was also preceded in death by a son, Armondo.
Survivors include her sons, Manuel of Turner and Sergio of Stayton; 14 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held today, 11 a.m. at Church of God - Seventh-day, Turner. Interment was at Lone Oak cemetery, Stayton. Remembrances: the church, 7478 Stayton Road SE, Turner, OR 97392. Arrangements: Weddle Funeral Home, Stayton.
Camila S. Aguilar

Marvin Merle Overholts
November 7, 1912 - February 13, 2003
Marvin Merle Overholts, 90, of Stayton died Feb. 13.
He was born in Harrington, Lincoln County, Wash., to Leroy and Anna Overholts. He moved to Portland at six, and graduated from Benson Polytechnic School in 1931. During World War II, he worked at Iron Fireman Manufacturing Co., making airplane parts for Boeing. He owned and operated The North Santiam Garage and Service Station from 1947 to 1958. He drove school bus for the Stayton School District from 1953 to 1961, and worked at Stayton Canning Co. from 1961 to 1976. With four others, he helped start the Santiam Historical Society in 1984, and was a member of the Salem Elks Lodge No. 336 and its RV Club, and the 89ers Good Sam Club. He and his wife traveled in their motor home across the United States three times, throughout Canada, and into Alaska. He flew to Hawaii in 1994, covering all 50 states.
His wife, Mable Thomas, whom he married
on July 2, 1939, survives.
Other survivors include his son, Terry “Lee” Overholts of Vernal, Utah; daughter, Linda Hagel of Chiloquin, Ore.; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held tomorrow, 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 1450 Fern Ridge Road, Stayton. Remembrances: Santiam Historical Society, P.O. William McCall Pennick, Sr.
March 2, 1922 - February 15, 2003
William McCall Pennick, Sr., 80, of Gates died Jan. 15.
He was born in Melvern, Kan., to Luke and Nancy Pennick. He married
Barbara Colgann on Dec. 6, 1943, and the couple moved to Gates in 1946. He was a life-long logger, owning P&B; Logging Co. for many years. He farmed hay on the couple’s 165-acre property after retiring in 1980. He was an accomplished pilot who enjoyed flying from Gates to scenic areas throughout Oregon. He was a charter member of the Gates Fire District and served on the Santiam Canyon School Board for a number of years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing pool, logging and, more recently, watching the herds of elk that roamed the family farm.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Fulton Pennick.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Barbara; daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Paul Vinson of Cheltenham, England; son and daughter-in-law, William and Christine Pennick, Jr., of Lyons; grandsons, William Pennick III and wife Julie of Stayton, and Jared Pennick of Lyons; granddaughters, Amanda Banning and husband Ryan of Lyons, and Billie Rae Vinson of Cheltenham, England; and two great-grandchildren, Madeline and Jackson Pennick of Stayton.
A private family service will be held at Belcrest Memorial Park, Salem. Remembrances: Stayton Christian School, 189 E. Washington St., Stayton, OR 97383. Arrangements: Virgil T. Golden, Salem.
Albert L. Harris
June 12, 1916 - November 23, 2002
Albert “Sambo” L. Harris, 86, of Gates died Nov. 23.
He was born in Silver Falls, and lived in the area most of his life. He was a self-employed logger. He moved to Gates in 1957, and was a member of the Santiam Masonic Lodge No. 25, AF & AM, Mill City Oddfellows Lodge and the Rebekahs. He enjoyed hunting and raising Christmas trees.
His wife, Bethel St. Elmo, who he married
on May 5, 1939, survives.
Other survivors include his son, Oscar of Gates; daughter, Kathryn Johnson of Salem; two granddaughters; and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Dec. 8, 2 p.m. at Santiam Masonic Lodge No. 25, Stayton. Remembrances: Santiam Masonic Lodge, Stayton or Mill City Oddfellows Lodge. Arrangements: Weddle Funeral Home, Stayton.
Forrest Vern Davis
February 18, 1920 - November 18, 2002
Forrest Vern Davis, 82, of Aumsville died Nov. 18.
He was born in Fargo, N.D., moved to Spokane, Wash. in 1948 and to Eugene in 1949. He was a welder by trade, and later owned and operated The Timber Topper Café in Eugene. He left Eugene after his retirement, living in Clatskanie and Prineville before settling in Aumsville in 1975. He was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy, and enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He married
Rose Mary Warnke on June 18, 1940; she preceded him in death in 1984. He was also preceded in death by sons, Bud Davis and Tony Cornell; daughter, Judith Nelson; and grandson, Aaron Griffin.
Survivors include his wife, Helen (Cornell), whom he married
on April 8, 1990; sons, Ron Davis and Pete Cornell, both of Aumsville, and Chuck Cornell of Dallas; daughters, Janis Puckett of Mill City, Lois Davis of Scio, Linda Sleeth of Albany, Kitty Globin of Illinois, and Patty McHaffie and Anna Griffin, both of Arizona; 31 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Services were held at the Church of God of Prophecy, Aumsville. Arrangements: Weddle Funeral Home, Stayton.
Ron Bentz
November 26, 2002
Deacon Ron Bentz, 67, of Scio died Tuesday morning at his home.
Born in Sublimity, he was ordained to the Diaconate on Nov. 29, 1997 and was the pastoral administrator of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Jordan and St. Patrick’s Mission in Lyons. He was recently named the 2002 National Outstanding Tree Farmer of the Year. He served as president of the National Farm and Land Institute of the National Association of Realtors in 1979 and was named the Farm and Land Broker of America in 1981. Throughout his life he was very active in the civic life of the community and the real estate profession.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Marie; and one grandchild.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Barbara; children, Clint Bentz, CPA of Scio, Theresa Bentz, BSN of Scio, Dr. Charles Bentz, MD, FACP of Portland, Lt. Col. Randall Bentz of Colorado Springs, Colo., Maj. Julie Bentz of Washington, D.C.; and 18 grandchildren.
A vigil service will be held Friday, 7 p.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, Scio. Funeral services will be held Saturday, 11 a.m. at the church. Remembrances: Mexico Mission, c/o Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, 39043 Jordan Road, Scio 97374. Arrangements: Weddle Funeral Home, Stayton.
Maureen Kay Dark
March 14, 1927 - November 19, 2002
Maureen Kay Dark, 65, of Salem died Nov. 19.
She was born in Centrallia, Wash., and moved to Oregon in 1951. She graduated from Stayton High School in 1955, and worked at the Stayton Cannery. She moved to Salem in 1975.
Her husband, Drury L. Dark, Sr., preceded her in death in 1998.
Survivors include her sons, Keith Drury of Salem and D.L. Drury of Aumsville; sisters, Marlene Richardson of California and Barbara Jean Lyons of Portland; and two grandchildren.
Graveside services were held at Restlawn Memory Gardens, Salem. Remembrances: American Diabetes Association. Arrangements: Restlawn Funeral Home, Salem.
Rita Elizabeth Kremer
April 17, 1917 - November 15, 2002
Rita Elizabeth Kremer Miller, 85, of Lyons died Nov. 15 due to complications from surgery.
She was born in Robey, S.D. She worked at Paris Woolen Mill, NORPAC Foods, and was the former owner of the Red Barn Tavern in Lyons.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Marie Hoffman; and brothers, Peter, Jr., and Sylvester “Lucky” Kremer.
Survivors include her son, Wayne Kirsch of Lyons; daughters, Carol Fahsholte and Joanne Gordon, both of Yakima, Wash.; sister, Evelyn Miotke of Sublimity; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A rosary will be held Saturday, 10:30 a.m. at St. Boniface Catholic Church, 370 Church St., Sublimity. Services will follow at 11 a.m. Arrangements: Weddle Funeral Home, Stayton.
