William Charles Grenz
November 9, 1923 - January 23, 2006
William Charles Grenz, 82, of Marion died Jan. 23.
He was born at home on Scravel Hill near Jefferson to William F. and Rose M. (Thiessen) Grenz, the first of three children. He attended Scravel Hill Grade School and graduated from Albany High School at the age of 16 in 1940.
He married
Ellen Hightower on Nov. 19, 1949, at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Jefferson. They lived in Albany until 1954 when they moved into the house they built on Scravel Hill. They bought a farm in Marion in 1964, and have lived their since.
He was a life-long farmer, growing cannery crops for Norpac and Agripac, and peppermint on his farms in Marion and Jefferson.
He and his wife enjoyed spending their winter months in Palm Springs, Las Vegas and Reno. He was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church in Jefferson, Knights of Columbus, Elks Lodge and Morningstar Grange. He was an avid bowler for many years and played baseball as a youth.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jack Grenz.
Survivors include his wife; son and daughter-in-law, Perry and Amanda Grenz of Marion; daughters, Becky Grenz of Vancouver, Wash., and Debbie Hadley of Marion; daughter and son-in-law, Robin and Gordon Bozarth of Vancouver, Wash.; sister, Marge Shuck of Salem; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A funeral Mass was held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Albany. Interment was at Jefferson cemetery, Jefferson. Remembrances: Willamette Valley Hospice c/o Fisher Funeral Home, 306 S.W. Washington St., Albany, OR 97321.
Dorothy Sorenson Carlile
January 9, 1919 - November 20, 2007
ALBANY — Dorothy Sorenson Carlile of Turner died early Tuesday morning, November 20, 2007 at the Samaritan Albany Hospital. She was 88.
Dorothy was born in Spokane, Washington, on January 9, 1919 to Ferdinand and May Sorenson. Later, while still a young girl, the family moved to Portland, Oregon.
She married
Lewis A. Carlile on March 27, 1943. They raised their sons near Turner.
Dorothy was a member the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She enjoyed playing the piano and doing family history. Art, gardening, and floral design were also some of her interests.
Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Galen and Marjorie Carlile of Turner, Jason and Pamela Carlile of Albany, and Dana of Portland; grandchildren, Adrienne, Lesley, Evan, and Meredith; step-grandchildren, Matt, Tracee, Lisa, and Jana; and grandchildren, Abigail, Savannah, and Jocelyn. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and four brothers, Hubert, Richard, Mayo, and Quinten.
A private interment will be at Lincoln Memorial Park in Portland. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. on December 22, 2007 in the Stayton Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Larry Andrew Davenport
November 30, 1937 - February 26, 2007
Larry Andrew Davenport, 69, of Aumsville, died Feb. 26.
He was born in Bristol, Okla. His family moved to the Salem area when he was young. He graduated from North Salem High School. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He worked as a contractor all of his life, building homes and pole barns for many families around the area. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, being in the outdoors and socializing. He was a good-hearted man.
He was preceded in death by his father, Lee, and daughter, Dana Sue Lockshaw.
Survivors include his sons; Curtis Davenport of Salem and Ricky D. Davenport of West Salem; his mother, Merle Avo Davenport of Wash.; brothers, Jim Davenport of Wash., Paul Davenport also of Wash., and Everett Davenport of Ind.; sisters, Eva Glaser of Salem and Elaine Moore of Oregon City; and three grandchildren. At his request there will be no services.

Roslyn Marie Cook
February 28, 2007
Roslyn Marie Cook, 32, of Salem, died Feb. 28.
She was raised in the Salem area, attended St. Mary's Catholic School and Regis High School in Stayton, graduating in 1993. She married
her high school sweetheart, David Cook, in 1994, and they had two children Isaac and Iris. They divorced in 2007 and remained close friends and cared for their children together.
She was a gentle and caring person who possessed artistic gifts that she shared in her drawings, through playing violin and cooking.
Survivors include her children, both of Aumsville; brothers, Lloyd Roberts of Anchorage, Alaska, and Evan Roberts of Salem; sister, Elise Roberts of Turner; grandmothers, Devta Gomez of Yuma, Ariz. and Iva VanBeck of Mehama; friend, David Cook of Aumsville; and parents, Steve and Susan Roberts of Turner.
Services were held Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Shaw.

Judy Humphrey
February 23, 1941 - January 26, 2006
Judy Humphrey, 64, of Aumsville died Jan. 26.
She was born in Steven Points, Wisc., to J. Irving and Evelyn Stoltenberg. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin at La Crosse and earned a master’s degree in physical education from the University of Oregon. She taught in Illinois for five years before moving to Oregon. She continued her teaching career at North Salem High School and taught at Stayton Middle School, retiring at 14 years.
She enjoyed coaching, golfing, traveling, singing, playing the guitar, family, friends and her faith. She was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church for 30 years. She loved singing and sang for more than 20 years with The Festival Chorale Oregon. She spent time in Arizona and Oregon, where she shared homes with her husband.
Survivors include her husband, David; son and daughter-in-law, Travis and Anne Humphrey; daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly and Darren Blades; brother and son-in-law, Ardie and Trish of La Crosse, Wisc.; sister, Linda Lingelbach of Olympia, Wash.; sister and brother-in-law, Nola and Mickie of Amherst Junction, Wisc.; grandchildren, Trenton and Addysen.
A memorial service was held at 1 p.m. today at Calvary Lutheran Church, Stayton. Remembrances: Calvary Lutheran Church, Stayton, or Willamette Valley Hospice.
Conrad Lee
October 29, 1920 - January 27, 2006
Conrad “Buss” Lee, 85, of Stayton died Jan. 27.
He was born to William Lee and Dora Belle Smith Lee, one of 13 children. He spent his childhood in Gales Creek, Ore. He joined the U.S. Army and served with distinction as a sharpshooter with the 7th Armored Division in Europe during World War II, during which he earned numerous citations and theater medals. After the war, he spent two years with the Corps of Engineers in Alaska.
In November 1970, he met Joyce Westenhouse Lee. They were later married
in Haines, Alaska. They also lived and worked in Sitka, Alaska, for five years before returning to Oregon, where together they operated Buss Lee Trucking. Under his call sign “Bald Eagle,” his log truck traveled the roads of Oregon and beyond for more than 10 years, with his wife at his side every day.
While his brothers and sisters all passed away before him, he enjoyed spending time with his many nieces and nephews still living in the Forest Grove area. He also enjoyed spending time with his stepchildren and their families and always had time for his grandchildren. He enjoyed target shooting, golf and fishing for sturgeon in the Columbia.
Survivors include his wife; stepdaughters, Diana Johnson of Eugene, Jan Bidwell of Albany, Sheryl Stewart of Salem, Linda Parker of Stayton and Jeanne Zehner of Salem; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Services were held at Weddle Funeral Home, Stayton. Interment was at Lone Oak cemetery, Stayton. Remembrances: Willamette Valley Hospice.
Lois Genevia Versteeg
December 26, 1929 - January 17, 2006
Lois Genevia Bales Versteeg, 76, of Salem died Jan. 17.
She was born in Kenwood, Okla., to Ernest and Golda Bales of Aumsville. She moved to Oregon in 1943, settling in Shaw.
She married
Donald Versteeg on Sept. 10, 1948, in Turner.
She worked as a cook for Turner Grade School for 22 years. She lived in Turner for 30 years. After retirement, she and her husband lived in Turner, La Pine and Yuma, Ariz., before moving to Salem.
She was a member of La Pine First Christian Church. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting, reading and golf. Her greatest joy were her grandchildren, who called her Grandma Toy.
Survivors include her husband; sons and daughters-in-law, David and Sue Versteeg of Turner and Steven and Eileen Versteeg of Silverton; daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Gerald Fry of Turner; sisters, Juanita Nicol of Aumsville, Lillian Duman of Salem and Wanda Whitley of Coos Bay; brother, Louie Bales of Aumsville; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Albert Lawrence Jensen
December 27, 1917 - March 24, 2005
Albert Lawrence Jensen, 87, of Salem died March 24.
He was born in Aumsville to Hans Peter and Bessie L. (Carlson) Jensen. He moved to Turner in the early 1930s and was a charter member of the Turner Fire Department, which was organized in 1939. He was the first volunteer fire chief of the department, serving for 18 years. He was owner and operator of Jensen’s Arco in Turner for 31 years. He served in World War II from 1942-44.
He was a 50-year member of the Masonic Pearl Lodge No. 66 in Turner and was a member of the Turner Christian Church. He enjoyed fishing and hunting.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn Davis; and a great-grandchild, Lachlan Jensen.
Survivors include his wife, Mabel Schifferer, whom he married
on May 15, 1939, in Salem; son and daughter-in-law, Brent and Elizabeth Jensen of Turner; sister, Alma Johnson of Portland; grandchildren, Michael Jensen of Central Point, Lisa Johnson of Atlanta, Texas, and Aaron Jensen of Turner; and great-grandchild, Declan Jensen.
Services are at 1:30 p.m. April 1 at Virgil T. Golden Funeral Home, 605 S.E. Commercial St., Salem. Remembrances: Turner Fire District, Turner Christian Church or Masonic Pearl Lodge No. 66, Turner.
Mabel M. Jones
January 21, 1936 - March 2, 2005
Mabel M. Jones, 69, of Sublimity died March 2.
She was born in Mill City to Reynold and Myrtle (Knutson) Heseman. She was raised and educated in Gates. After her schooling, she married
Arthur Olson. Two children were born to that marriage, which later ended.
On July 3, 1972, she married
Calvin Jones in Salem. He preceded her in death in 1990.
She worked as a certified nurses aid as well as a bartender and waitress in the area. She and her husband moved to the Sublimity area in the early 1980s.
She enjoyed gardening, cooking and yard work.
Survivors include her daughter, Sheryl Pittam of Salem; son, Stanley Olson of Mill City; brother, James Heseman of Napa, Calif.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at Weddle Funeral Home, Stayton. Private inurnment was at Belcrest Memorial Park, Salem. Remembrances: Make A Wish Foundation or Sublimity Fire Department.
Beryl M. Lamb
June 8, 1927 - February 21, 2005
Beryl M. Lamb, 77, of Stayton died Feb. 21 at Salem Hospital.
He was born in Jerome, Idaho, to Elliott and Phoebe (Wahl) Lamb. He was in the Army Airborne Infantry from 1950 to 1953. He served with the 503rd Parachute Reg. 11th Airborne Division, “The Rock,” stationed at Fort Campbell, Ky., and Fort Riley, Kan. He was injured before the 503rd was sent to Korea.
He worked at various plywood mills, retiring in 1993.
He enjoyed telling stories of his youth and army days. He was a can hopper with his best friend, Steve Reisterer.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Leona; parents; and brother, Archie.
Survivors include his sons, Matthew of Lebanon, Elliott of Stayton and Phillip Crandoll of Mill City; brothers, Bruce of Lebanon and Ralph of Vancouver, Wash.; sisters, Bernice Shurts of Lebanon and Fern Bickford of Arizona; nine grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Services were held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Stayton. Interment was at Lone Oak cemetery, Stayton. Remembrances: Workman & Steckly Funeral Chapel, Sweet Home.
