James DeRocher Sr.
James William DeRocher Sr., 75, of Toledo died at Newport Rehabilitation & Specialty Care Center on May 10, 1999.
He was born in Portland on Feb. 20, 1924 to James A. and Emma May Fleischer DeRocher. He was a resident of Toledo for the past 12 years, and a previous 30-year resident of Bend.
For 20 years, he was employed as an electrician with Pacific Power and Light Company. He retired in 1979. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, and attended the Catholic Church.
Survivors include his sons, James W. DeRocher Jr. of Benton, Ariz. and Mike H. DeRocher of Toledo; a sister, Martha Breen of Bend; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at Bateman Funeral Home in Newport at 10:30 a.m. today (Wednesday). Bateman Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Richard Roberts
Richard S. Roberts, 28, of Portland died April 30, 1970.
He was born in Portland on July 15, 1970 to Ron and Judi Roberts.
He was employed at Alcatel Submarine Networks in Portland. He had previously lived in Waldport and worked in the commercial and charter fisheries in Newport. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1988 through 1992.
Survivors include his mother, Judi Larson of Vancouver, Wash.; brothers Mike Roberts of Vancouver and David Roberts of Sandy; his mother’s life partner, Sonny Boutwell of Valley View; his step-mother, Tracy Roberts of Waldport; and a step-sister, Shannon Pearce of Valley View. He was preceded in death by his father, Ron Roberts, formerly of Waldport, on Jan. 28, 1998.
A celebration of life will be held Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. in the Two-Rivers Room of the Doubletree Hotel at the Quay in Vancouver, Wash. Memorial contributions may be made to the suicide prevention center of one’s choice.
Paul Ross
Paul Irvin Ross, 70, of Yachats died May 6, 1999 at his daughter’s home in Siletz following a lengthy battle with Lou Gehrig’s Disease (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, or ALS).
He was born in Lakewood, N.M. on Aug. 15, 1928 to Samuel J. and Anna Irene (Babb) Ross. He married Mary Imogene Coleman in Waterford, Calif. on Jan. 7, 1951. He entered the Army a few days later, and served in Korea during that conflict. He received his discharge as a corporal from the Presidio in San Francisco in July 1956.
Mr. Ross worked as a logger and a general contractor in Montana and California, and moved to Yachats in 1986 following a logging accident. He enjoyed music, hunting, billiards and chess, and was known in the Yachats and Newport areas as an avid fisherman.
Survivors include his wife, Imogene Ross of Yachats; daughters Cindy McGill of Siletz and Patty Nicholson of Seguin, Texas; a son, Stan Ross of Kalispell, Mont.; a brother, Sam Ross of Orland, Calif.; sisters Rachel Courtright and Mary Lou Clark, both of Redding, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers.
Private graveside services were held May 10 at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. Memorial contributions may be made to the ALS Foundation, care of DeMoss-Durdan Garden Chapel, 815 NW Buchanan, Corvallis 97330.
Lillian Nicholson
Lillian R. Nicholson, 84, of Denver, Colo. died May 7, 1999.
Mrs. Nicholson was born in McCoy on Sept. 28, 1914. She married Gilbert Nicholson in 1936. She lived in Toledo until 1975, when she retired from the county clerk’s office in Newport.
Survivors include her daughters, Dorothy Wood of Seattle, Wash. and Patty Young of Lakewood, Colo.; a sister, Jean Turley of Eugene; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Eureka Cemetery in Newport.
Elizabeth Vickerman
Elizabeth (Forbes) Vickerman, 90, of West Linn died May 9, 1999 of natural causes.
She was born in Kosse, Texas on Sept. 22, 1908. She served in the Navy and was a teacher, writer, director and actress, retiring in 1971. She won the Freedom Foundation Award.
She married Harry Vickerman in 1948; he preceded her in death in 1964. She lived in South Beach from 1985 through 1991.
Survivors include her daughter, Sara Vickerman of West Linn; sisters Mary Nell Beer of Mansfield, Ohio and Faye Bishop of Fort Worth, Texas; and a brother, Walton Forbes Jr. of Fort Worth, Texas.
Memorial services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Riverview Cemetery Chapel, 8421 SW Macadam Ave., Portland. Remembrances are suggested to the Oregon Humane Society, Lakewood Arts Center in Lake Oswego, or Oregon Parks Trust in Salem.
Richard Roberts

Graveside services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Eureka Cemetery in Newport. Following the services, her family will be at Trinity United Methodist Church in Toledo to visit with friends.
Gene Johnson
Gene Casler Johnson, 73, of South Beach died at his home on May 12, 1999.
He was born in Tillamook on Dec. 6, 1925 to Joseph and Leone Benner Johnson. He had been a resident of South Beach since 1976 and was a previous 30-year resident of Bend.
He married his wife, Modena, in Bend on May 5, 1953. For 40 years, he worked as a logger, retiring in 1989. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Modena; daughters Kathy Meyers of Portland, and Ingri Meyers and Margaret Stewart, both of Bend; a son, Mikel Johnson of Toledo; a brother, Joseph N. Johnson of Bothell, Wash.; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
At the decedent’s request, no services are planned. Disposition is by cremation, with Bateman Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.
Paul Ross
The family of Paul Irvin Ross, 70, of Yachats who died May 6, 1999, will hold a potluck luncheon at his daughter’s home at 22948 Highway 229, on the corner of Wade Road and the Siletz Highway), Siletz, Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Leona Hamrick
Leona Ardelle Hamrick, 65, of South Beach died at her home on May 6, 1999.
She was born in Hagerman, Idaho on Feb. 27, 1934 to Frank and Lillian Peck Sheppard. She had been a resident of South Beach for the past year.
She married Dana Hamrick in Pocatello, Idaho in March 1986. For most of her life, she had been a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Dana; daughters Kathy Netherlin of Pendleton, and Laura Williams and Deana Euing, both of Salem; a son, Glen Dunsbergen of Newport; brothers Dene Sheppard of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Duane Martindale of Hagerman, Idaho; sisters Wanda Zahm of Twin Falls, Idaho and Linda Brennen of Boise, Idaho; 14 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
At the decedent’s request, no services are planned. Disposition is by cremation, with Bateman Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
