Sheldon D. Thompson
June 15, 1938 — Sept. 30, 2004

Sheldon D. Thompson, 66, of Lebanon died Sept. 30, while playing golf.

He was born in Utica, N.Y., to Alfred and Lillian Thompson. He is survived by his wife, Marty Thompson of Lebanon; daughters Karen Thompson of Sacramento, Calif., and Kelly Thompson of San Francisco; son Steven Thompson of Maple, R.I., and six grandchildren.

Sheldon retired to Lebanon in 1999 with his wife after a career as a senor chief petty office/chief of the boat in the U.S. Navy submarines "Silent Service." He had a second career as a senior design engineer and management in the computer industry. He contributed many designs to this field. He attended Northwestern and MIT universities.

He became an Elk in Santa Clara, Calif., and immediately was involved in the chairs. While Leading Knight in 1996, he was the Lodge's host for the California-Hawaii Elks State Convention. He was very active in the Lebanon Elks Lodge No. 1663 as the Lodge Secretary, South Central District Membership Lapsation Committee Chairman and a Past Exalted Ruler (2001-2002).

Sheldon was a life member of the VFW in Old Forge, N.Y., a life member of La Societe Des 40 Hommes et 8 Chevauk in New York, and a life member of the American Legion Post No. 1376 in New York. Sheldon ran for chief of police in Santa Clara. He served on the International Exchange Commission as Chairman for the City of Santa Clara.

He loved playing golf at Mallard Creek year round. He was involved with the submarine associations and traveled with his wife to the submarine reunions. He loved his shipmates, golf and the Elks.

During his Navy career he served on three submarines: USS Bang (SS-385), USS Robert E. Lee (SSBN/SSN-601) and USS Thomas Jefferson (SSBN/SSN-618). His career was faced with some trying times, the Bay of Pigs and when J.F. Kennedy was assassinated he was ready to fire missiles. There were expeditions under the Artic Ice and the Cold War "underwater games" that only he and his shipmates shared. He also served out of the special operations office in Washington, D.C.

Sheldon was an instructor at the Navy submarine schools. He was a mentor to several young men in the Navy. His guidance influenced them to become lifers in the U.S. Navy. Many of these young men realize that his leadership skills helped them become "chief of the boat" themselves. They implemented his tactics during their careers. He believed that submarines were a different breed and no matter what country's uniform they wore, they were all of the same breed.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 7, in the ballroom at the Lebanon Elks Lodge No. 1663. Cremation is under the care of Neptune and burial will be at sea in Charleston, S.C. with Navy traditions attended by his shipmates and their spouses of the submarine USS Robert E. Lee.

Harvey A. ‘Grampa Fish' Larsen
Oct. 21, 1916 — Nov. 21, 2004

On Sunday evening, Harvey A. Larsen peacefully joined his beloved wife Virginia, who preceded him in death in 1987.

Harvey began his life adventure in Alexander, N.D., and moved to Alpine in 1921, then to Salem in 1925. He attended schools in Salem and graduated from Salem Senior High School in 1933.

Harvey and Virginia Toler first met while working at a Salem cannery and were married in Ashland in 1938 where Harvey ran the projector for a theater. Shortly afterwards, they moved to Lebanon where they worked and played hard with many lifelong friends. Harvey and Virginia then built a log home near Lacomb where Harvey worked for Snow Peak Logging Company.

From a young age Harvey had an inventive mind and was a mastermind in mechanics, carpentry, electrical, plumbing, farming and numerous other areas. His talents were widely known, and he was frequently called upon by neighbors and friends to solve and repair problems of all varieties. He and Virginia instilled a strong work ethic not only in their children, but became willing mentors to anyone who needed assistance.

Harvey and Virginia began their family with baby Karen, followed by Barbara and Mary Beth. Harvey joined the Navy in 1944 and was stationed in Okinawa during World War II. He was honorably discharged in February 1946 as a machinist's mate, second class.

Harvey and Virginia purchased their home on Fish Hatchery Drive in 1947 where they added to their family with the births of Nancy, Harvey Jr. and Gary. With six little mouths to feed, Harvey and Virginia used their resources and intelligence to create a multitude of businesses, including logging, moss and cascara bark collection, a Christmas greenery trade, and finally, in the 1960s, a trout farm known as Larsen's U Catch ‘Em.

The trout farm began as a hobby, but soon turned into a full-time occupation and Harvey continued to build ponds and raise fish until his passing. Over the years, hundreds of children caught their first fish at Larsen's and as the years went by those children began to bring their children until eventually there were some families who had been catching fish for three generations. The fishing customers were of all ages and from all walks of life, and enjoyed the natural beauty and serenity of the surroundings that Harvey had created.

We will dearly miss this lovable man, but know that he is at peace, that he has touched hundreds of souls with his quick wit and endearing charm, and that he has left us with a legacy of strength and compassion.

Harvey is survived by his six children, Karen Dieckman of Salem, Barbara Bradley and Harvey Larsen Jr., both of Gates, Mary Beth Reed of Scio, Gary Larsen of Bend, Nancy Krewina of Newport; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Harold Jensen of Salem, and sister Leila Belle Butler of Salem.

A public graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Lacomb cemetery followed by a celebration of memories at the Larsen Family home on Fish Hatchery Drive.

Donations would be appreciated to the Lacomb cemetery Association or Samaritan Evergreen Hospice in care of Huston-Jost Funeral Home, 86 W. Grant St., Lebanon, OR 97355.
