Charles Edward Nightingale
Sept. 13, 1941 - April 1, 1999
Charles Edward Nightingale of Lebanon died of a cerebral aneurysm Thursday at Lebanon Community Hospital. He was 57.
Mr. Nightingale was born in Wheaton, Kan., to Edward and Vesta Nightingale. He lived in Lebanon for the rest of his life.
He was a member of the first hotshot firefighting crew in Oregon during his youth. He enjoyed picking winning teams, exploring the world on his computer and entertaining his nephews and nieces with stories and fast Mustang rides. He was known to be a quiet, gentle man.
"We will miss him dearly, but know Charles is with Christ, enjoying his new home and celebrating the miracle of what Easter means to all of us," his family said.
Surviving are his parents, Albert and Vista Nightingale of Lebanon; sisters Betty Vincent of Sunriver and Phyllis Cash of Elko, Nev.; four nieces, three nephews, two great-nieces and great-nephews.
Mr. Nightingale's family will hold a private service at a later date.
Charles A. Jackson
March 2, 1918 - April 1, 1999
Charles A. Jackson of Lebanon died Thursday at Villa Cascade Care Center. He was 81.
He was born in Shedd to Delos "John" and Bessie (Crume) Jackson. He was raised in Shedd. He married
Wavell Case on Oct. 4, 1940, in Albany.
The couple lived in Shedd where he worked in farming, for the Thompson Flouring Mill and later for the Brownsville Timber Co. They moved to the Tennessee District of Lebanon in 1951 and Mr. Jackson began working for Crown Zellerbach as a millwright, then as a machinist. He retired from the company in 1980. His wife died on Oct. 23, 1985.
Mr. Jackson was a member of the Corvallis Historic Auto Club, was a 4-H leader and was active in various projects and functions in the Tennessee District. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and collecting and restoring antique cars.
Surviving are his companion Ruth Solander of Lebanon; son David Jackson of Cottage Grove; daughter Malinda Wilson of Monroe, Wash.; sister June Reab of Eugene; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. An infant brother died earlier.
Viewing will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to noon Monday at Huston-Jost Funeral Home.
A graveside service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday at the Lebanon IOOF cemetery with Ron Ritchie officiating.

Christian James
March 29, 1999
Christian James of Lebanon was born dead on March 29 at Lebanon Community Hospital.
Surviving are his mother Stefanie Loughmiller; grandparents Kelly and Barbara Biever; and great-grandparents Riley and Barbara Beasley.
A graveside service was held Friday at Crawfordsville Union cemetery. Joseph Novak officiated.
Kenneth "Rass" Morton Johnston
February 7, 1913 - August 22, 2007
Kenneth Morton Johnston, age 94, of Sweet Home, passed away August 22, 2007. He was born in Greenville, Kentucky to Irvin Morton and Lela Ruth (Cornette) Johnston.
Kenneth moved to Bakersfield, California in 1932 from Greenville, Kentucky. He found work as landscaper, eventually becoming a Landscape Architect Engineer. He moved to Oregon in 1939. He attended NW Christian College, and later finished schooling at Butler University in Indiana.
Kenneth served in many ministries, including Kern Park Christian Church in Portland, Oregon. He served in various colleges (NW Christian College, Milligan College in Johnson City, Tennessee, and Puget Sound Christian College in Edmonds, Washington) and served as a Field Representative with Oregon Christian Convention. Kenneth served in many different pastorals: Dallas, Oregon, Sheridan, and Indiana.
He served as Minister at Sweet Home Church of Christ at 18th and Long. He continued to serve in the congregation as an Elder until his passing.
Kenneth is survived by his wife, Barbara; a daughter, Gail Dell, of Turner, Oregon; one sister, Anna Lee Warren, of Greenville, Kentucky; and his nieces and nephews; stepchildren, Christy (Mario) Bernal, of Lakeview, Oregon, Jason (Tina) Cawthorn, of Clackamas, Oregon, and Mark Cawthorn of Gresham, Oregon; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
Kenneth was preceded in death by his daughter, Kathleen Perry; son, Wayne Johnston; and brother, William “Bill” Johnson.
Memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm Wednesday, August 29th, at 18th and Long Church of Christ. Sweet Home Funeral Chapel is handling arrangements.
Steven J. Heuvel
March 14, 1966 - March 29, 1999
Steven James "Steve" Heuvel, 33, of Albany died Monday of complications of cancer and pneumonia.
He was born in Albany, attended St. Mary's School and graduated in 1984 from West Albany High School. He attended Linn-Benton Community College and majored in education at Western Oregon University.
He married
Elizabeth "Liza" June Grace Stephenson Dec. 28, 1996, at the Albany Mennonite Church.
Mr. Heuvel was assistant athletic director at the Albany Boys & Girls Club, and derived great satisfaction from working with the children and young adults. His dream was to have a new gym built for the kids.
Mr. Heuvel belonged to St. Mary's Catholic Church and attended the Albany Mennonite Church with his wife.
He enjoyed all sports and especially liked playing golf with his brother. He was a former member of the OSU Beaver Club and was an avid Notre Dame University sports fan.
Surviving are wife Liza; parents Harold and Dolores (Roy) Heuvel; brother Mark Van Heuvel of Charboneau; sisters Debbie McTimmonds and Susan Holman, both of Albany; nieces Jessie and Jenny McTimmonds; and nephew Mark Holman.
Visitation will be from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at Fisher Funeral home. Mr. Heuvel's funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with Father Mell Stead and Pastor Lynn Miller officiating. Burial will be at Twin Oaks Memorial Gardens.

Donald A. Wilson
Oct. 22, 1923 - March 18, 1999
Former Albany resident Donald A. Wilson, 75, of Albany died March 18 of a heart attack.
Mr. Wilson was born in Gervais and grew up in Tillamook and Salem. He graduated from Salem High School in 1941, and worked at Boeing before joining the Navy. He served aboard the USS Orestes in the South Pacific during World War II.
He married
Avis Petersen, and she died in 1968. He married
Marie Mallow Aug. 16, 1969.
A mechanic and later a master mechanic, Mr. Wilson was a member of the Operating Engineers Union No. 701, and served as a union field representative for a brief period. He became a training coordinator for the union and developed the apprenticeship program.
In the 1980s he worked for Industrial Welding Supply in Albany and in Newport, and helped wife Marie operate Shamrock Gardens in Albany and the Sea Shore Shop in Seal Rock.
The Wilsons owned the Custom Fishing Tackle Shop in Waldport. After retiring, they moved to the Sandy area.
Surviving are wife Marie; daughter Nelda Wilson; sons Keith, Bruce and Brian; and eight grandchildren. Brother Clive died in 1968.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, April 9, at the Pleasant Home United Methodist Church, Gresham. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 10, at the Brownsville Pioneer cemetery.

Adrian H. Seits
Oct. 2, 1912 - April 28, 1999
CORVALLIS - Adrian H. Seits, 86, of Corvallis died April 28 at home of an intra-cerebral hemorrhage.
Born in Bellfountain to William and Ethel Seits, he graduated in 1931 from Monroe High School.
He met Ruth Moore at a dance at the OSU Memorial Union building, and they were married
six weeks later, on July 27, 1939.
Mr. Seits worked for Benton County and for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. In 1943 he joined the Navy, serving as a fireman first class during World War II.
After the war he worked as a surveyor for Mountain States Power Co., and for Pacific Power and Light after it bought the company. He retired in 1977.
Mr. Seits belonged to the Spring Hill Country Club, the Lebanon Elks Lodge, the Corvallis Moose Lodge and the American Legion.
Surviving are wife Ruth of Corvallis; daughter Judy Sherer of Corvallis; and sister Alta Dizney of Manteca, Calif.
A baby son and brother Alton Seits died earlier.
A celebration of Mr. Seits' life will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Kings Circle Assembly of God, in the west wing.

Marie M. Kowitz
April 25, 1905 - May 3, 1999
LEBANON - Former Lebanon resident Marie M. Kowitz, 94, of Mt. Angel died Monday at the Providence Benedictine Nursing Center.
She was born in Akron, Ohio, the daughter of John and Anna (Molnar) Barta. She grew up in Ohio and moved to Los Angeles in the mid-1930s. In 1945 she moved to Lebanon, where she married
Walter Kowitz Jan. 2, 1947.
The Kowitzes farmed in the Brewster area until 1968. They moved into Lebanon in 1969. Mr. Kowitz died Aug. 25, 1982. Mrs. Kowitz moved to Mt. Angel in 1996.
She belonged to St. Edward's Catholic Church and the Catholic Daughters of America. She enjoyed sewing, knitting and cooking.
Surviving are sisters Theresa Barta of Mt. Angel and Rose Morsefield of Visalia; and many nieces and nephews.
Brother John Barta and sisters Anna Bachman, Katherine Miller and Elisabeth Pfeiffer died earlier.
Viewing will be from noon to 6 p.m. Thursday at Huston-Jost Funeral Home. Recitation of the Rosary will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Edward's Catholic Church. Funeral Mass for Mrs. Kowitz will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church, followed by burial at the Lebanon IOOF cemetery.

Ursula `Rosie' Pickle
April 5, 1930 - April 30, 1999
SWEET HOME - Ursula "Rosie" Pickle, 69, of Albany died Friday.
She was born in Bremehaven, Germany, to Max and Johanna (Faulkmann) Fordon. She married
R.L. Pickle in July of 1952 in Germany.
The Pickles lived briefly in Oklahoma before moving to Sweet Home in 1953.
A homemaker, Mrs. Pickle especially enjoyed camping and quilting.
Surviving are husband R.L.; sons R.L. Jr. of Medford, Steven of Sweet Home and Ronald of Largo, Fla.; daughters Sheila Sylvester and JoAnn Serdy, both of Sweet Home; and sisters Hilda Fordon of Merced, Calif., Helmie Witherall of West Virginia Beach, Va., and Marga Tiedeman of Bremehaven, Germany. There are 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Private services will be scheduled later.

Archie Kauffman
June 21, 1935 — May 11, 1999
Archie “Junior” Kauffman, 63, of Albany died of a heart attack Tuesday.
He was born in Kenmare, N.D., to Archie and Elizabeth (Hershberger) Kauffman. He and his family lived in Molalla for several years and moved to Sweet Home in 1941. They moved to Albany in 1964.
Junior worked part time at Center Enterprises on a lawn and yard crew. He enjoyed mowing lawns for many west Albany residents, and for Fish and a Mennonite group home. He especially liked picking blackberries.
A sociable man, who made friends easily and cherished them, he became acquainted with many Albany people while riding his bicycle through town and stopping to visit.
A member of the Albany Mennonite Church, Junior attended evening and mid-week services at the Church of God on southwest 15th Avenue.
Surviving are brother Ray of Albany; sisters Lila Hoard and Vesta Steiner, both of Albany; and nieces and nephews Donna Bergey, Pat Stutzman, Lynette Plank, Ron Bergey, Ric Bergey, Dale Bergey, Jay Steiner and Jere Steiner.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at AAsum Funeral Home. A graveside service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Gilliland cemetery in Sweet Home.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Albany Mennonite Church. Pastor Lynn Miller will officiate.
