Homer Stokes
Homer Charles Stokes, 91, of Yachats died at his home on May 6, 1999.
He was born in Forest Grove on Oct. 28, 1907 to Charles B. and Lola Bester Stokes. He had been a resident of Yachats for the past 52 years.
He married Deltie M. Fellows in Toledo on June 20, 1946. In 1950, he and and his wife started the Yachats Cable Company, serving Yachats and Waldport with cable TV; he retired in 1969.
He was an Army veteran of World War II. A lifetime member of the Yachats Lions Club, he served with the Lions Sight and Hearing Club in Portland and was a district governor for the Lions from 1970 through 1971. He was also a member of the Elks, Yachats Chamber of Commerce, and Yachats Volunteer Fire District, and had donated money to get the Yachats Ambulance Company started.
Survivors include his wife, Deltie, of Yachats; a stepson, Paul Haga of Coquille; a step-daughter, Bernice Keller of Coquille; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at the Yachats Cemetery Tuesday at 11 a.m. A memorial service will follow at the Yachats Lions Club. The family suggests donations to the Yachats Lions Club. Bateman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
George Myers
George Henry Myers, 72, of Dallas died May 2, 1999 in Dallas.
He was born in Stayton on June 14, 1926 to William and Elsie Kufner Myers. He attended St. Mary's Catholic School in Stayton. He served in the Army during World War II.
He married June Rose Thomason in September 1945. They lived in Toledo from 1948 until moving to Waldport in 1962. His wife preceded him in death in 1986.
He married Mildred E. Carpenter on June 13, 1987 in Dallas. They moved back to Dallas in 1997.She preceded him in death in 1998.
He owned G. Myers and Son Builders in Waldport, and specialized in light commercial and residential construction. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, camping and woodworking. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Waldport and past president of the American Legion in Waldport.
Survivors include his daughter, Irene Durbin of Dallas; sons Irvin Myers of Bend and Lee Myers of Dallas; a sister, Eleanor Muscutt of Lebanon; a brother, Virgil Myers of Waldport; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. today (Friday) in St. Philip Catholic Church in Dallas. Interment will be in Belcrest Memorial Park in Salem. Arrangements are under the direction of Bollman Funeral Home in Dallas.
Donald Park
Donald Davis Park, 68, died of complications from cancer on April 25, 1999 at Newport Rehabilitation & Specialty Care Center.
He was born in Portland.
Survivors include his wife, Jackie Daren-Berger of Whittman, Ariz.; a daughter, Seana Olds of Phoenix, Ariz.; and a brother, Jim Pack of Salem.
By request, no services will be held. Disposition is by cremation. Contributions may be made to Contact Information and Referral Service, Inc. or Hospice of Lincoln County.
Ray Ness
Ray Ness, 60, of Tidewater died May 3, 1999 in Portland.
He was born in Martin, S.D. on July 11, 1938 to Wesley and Adeline Ness. In 1942, he moved with his family to Portland. Following his schooling, he worked at various occupations in Portland until he enlisted into the United States Army in 1956. After his discharge in 1958, he returned to Portland and continued to work at various jobs until he attended welding school in 1966.
After completing welding school, he began work in the Portland shipyards as a welder, and later became a rigger. In 1987, he left the shipyards as a junior foreman because of an injury.
He then moved to Waldport, and in 1991, to Anchorage, Alaska. While in Anchorage, he attended ACI Computer College where he received a degree in computer bookkeeping. He worked in Anchorage as a bookkeeper until returning to Waldport in 1996, where he owned and operated Ness Bookkeeping.
He was a member of the Waldport Moose Lodge, and the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers and Blacksmiths Union. He was an avid salmon fisherman, enjoyed the outdoors, watching football and other sports on television, and earlier in life, he enjoyed stock car racing.
He married Suzann Haley in Portland on Nov. 19, 1965.
Survivors include his wife, Suzann, of Tidewater; his mother, Adeline Aldinger of Tidewater; daughters LaDawna Booze of Portland, Danette Ness and Yvonne Campbell of Scappoose; a son, Richard Ness of Arkansas; a brother, LeRoy Ness of Albany; and four grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held Sunday at noon at Bateman Carroll Funeral Chapel in Gresham. Private cremation is planned. Contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society or hospice.
Ray "Hawk" Middaugh
Ray Wolcott "Hawk" Middaugh, 63, of Yachats died at his home on May 4, 1999.
He was born in Easton, Md. on July 26, 1935 to Ray and Lucille D. Long Middaugh.
He was a Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a writer, and retired in 1994.
Survivors include his sons, Michael Middaugh of Pacific Grove, Calif. and Rich V. Sagan of Willits, Calif.; and three grandchildren.
Memorial services are pending. Disposition is by cremation, with Bateman Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements. Donations are suggested to the Yachats Youth Activity Program, PO Box 345, Yachats 97498.
Lawrence Quirion
Lawrence Thomas Quirion, 47, of Seal Rock died April 29, 1999 in Vancouver, Wash.
He was born in Bethlehem, Penn. on Jan. 3, 1952 to Richard and Helen Quirion. He was the owner and operator of Lightening Coast Construction of Seal Rock and a member and instructor at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newport. He was active in sports, and enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping.
Survivors include his wife, Susan Quirion of Seal Rock; parents Richard and Helen Quirion of Vancouver, Wash.; a daughter, Laura Elizabeth Quirion of Seal Rock; sisters Ingris Smith of Ocean Park, Wash. and Carrie Kachmaryk of Scott Air Force Base, Ill.; and his grandmother, Helen Sears of Vancouver.
Memorial services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newport. A reception will follow. Memorial Gardens Funeral Chapel of Washington is in charge of arrangements.
Dorothy Bowen
Dorothy Jean Bowen, 73, of Toledo died at Pacific Communities Hospital in Newport on May 5, 1999.
She was born in Jennings, Okla. on July 21, 1925 to Ben F. and Carolyn Finn Johnson. She married Jerome "Jerry" Bowen in Oilton, Okla. on Jan. 5, 1942.
For 38 years, she was employed as a school bus driver with the Lincoln County School District, before retiring in September 1998.
Survivors include her husband, Jerry, of Toledo; sons Bob Bowen of Marsing, Idaho, and Tom Bowen of Toledo; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Beverly Pumpelly, in 1991.
At the decedent.s request, no services are planned. Disposition is by cremation, with Bateman Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.
Jan Adams
Jan Yvonne (Thorsteinson) Adams, 49, of Newport died April 30, 1999 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Corvallis.
She was born in Bellingham, Wash. on Nov. 23, 1949 to Harold Paul and Ivy V. Parker Thorsteinson. When she was a young girl, the family moved to San Jose, Calif., where she graduated form Blackford High School. She continued to live in the San Jose area and raised her family there.
In 1980, she moved to Bellingham, where she graduated from Western Washington’s Fairhaven College in 1989. She moved to Oregon in 1990 and settled in Newport.
She met Charley Adams while living in Depoe Bay, and they were married on Sept. 12, 1998. An educator and social worker, she taught the life skills course at Oregon Coast Community College until illness forced her to quit.
Survivors include her husband, Charley Adams of Newport; a son, Michael Eversole of Bremerton, Wash.; daughters Rochelle Parker of Seattle, Wash.; her mother, Ivy Fletcher of Yoncalla; a brother, Darryl Thorsteinson of Ceres, Calif.; and sisters JoAnne Fondren of Caldwell, Idaho, Sandi Davis of Portland, and Toni Epperson of Grants Pass.
Private services will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Leukemia Society of America, in care of DeMoss-Durdan Garden Chapel, 815 NW Buchanan Ave., Corvallis 97330
