Velda Charity Kropf
Sept. 4, 1912 - April 4, 1999
HALSEY - Velda Charity Kropf, 86, of Halsey died Sunday at home.
She was born in Harrisburg, the daughter of Chester and Della (Tandy) Curtis. She married
Orie Kropf Sept. 21, 1930, in Harrisburg.
The Kropfs lived in Sweet Home before moving to the Halsey family farm, Mrs. Kropf's home for the past 68 years. Mr. Kropf died in January of 1994.
Mrs. Kropf belonged to the Albany Mennonite Church and served for 17 years as president of the Women's Missionary Service Auxiliary of the Pacific Coast Conference of the Mennonite Church. She served on the Auction Committee for Western Mennonite School of Salem for many years, organizing the selling of quilts and other needlework items.
She had a talent for making beautiful quilts and afghans, liked flowers and enjoyed cooking and entertaining. She especially enjoyed her family.
Surviving are sons Delwin and Larry, both of Halsey, and Veldon of Harrisburg; daughters Joyce Gingerich of McMinnville and Arzalea Hostetler of Albany; brothers Charles and John Curtis both of Harrisburg, and Dean Curtis of Albany; and sister Elnora Malpass of Eugene. There are 13 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.
Sisters Alice Toland, Delta Powell and Anne Davis died before Mrs. Kropf. An infant daughter, a grandson and a great-great-grandson also died earlier.
Viewing will be from noon to 5 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday at AAsum Funeral Home. Her funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Albany Mennonite Church, followed by burial at Alford cemetery near Harrisburg.
Contributions in Mrs. Kropf's name may be made to the Western Mennonite School or to Evergreen Hospice. They may be left at AAsum Funeral Home or at the church at the time of the funeral.
Alvena K. Campbell
March 26, 1912 - April 5, 1999
LEBANON - Alvena K. Campbell, 87, of Lebanon died Monday at home.
She was born in Lebanon to Peter and Pauline (Janeski) Karpinski. A lifelong Lebanon resident, she attended Lebanon schools. She worked 36 years at the Lebanon Elks Lodge before retiring in 1981.
She especially enjoyed working with flowers and her scrapbooks and liked taking life easy. She attended St. Edwards Catholic Church.
Surviving are daughter DeLores Hall of Lebanon; son Wallace of New York; sister Madeline Bender of Albany; and seven grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandchild.
Son Richard died in 1994.
Viewing will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Huston-Jost Funeral Home, followed by recitation of the Rosary at 6:15 p.m.
Mrs. Campbell's funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Huston-Jost Funeral Home, with Father Paul Maher officiating. Burial will follow at the Lebanon IOOF cemetery.
Allane S. Jump
June 30, 1957 - April 4, 1999
LEBANON - Allane S. Jump, 41, of Lebanon died Sunday at Lebanon Community Hospital.
She was born in Lebanon to Albert and Sue (Wagner) Grugett. She attended Gore Elementary School and Lebanon Middle School and graduated from Lebanon High School in 1976.
She had worked for several years as a checker at the Albany Safeway. Later she worked for Willamette Industries in Sweet Home.
She married
Bob Jump Nov. 25, 1985. The couple owned and operated Jump & Sons on Airport Road. They started by selling firewood and expanded into landscaping supplies.
Mrs. Jump enjoyed gold mining, fishing, camping, boating and gardening.
Surviving are husband Bob; son Nick Slyter of Lebanon; stepchildren Jason and Keri Jump, both of Oregon City; mother Sue Grugett of Lebanon; brother Martin Grugett of Lebanon; sisters Paula Nohrnberg and Betty Adamson, both of Albany; grandchildren Taylor Jump and Austin Elkington; and a niece and three nephews.
Viewing will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Huston-Jost Funeral Home. Mrs. Jump's funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Lebanon, with Pastor Craig Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at the Lebanon IOOF cemetery. Huston-Jost Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
Alice M. Lawrence
July 10, 1934 - April 3, 1999
STAYTON - Alice M. Lawrence, 64, of Stayton died Saturday.
Mrs. Lawrence was born in Boise, Idaho. She had lived in Albany, Lyons and Cottage Grove before moving to Stayton in 1981.
She married
Lloyd R. Valentine in 1955, and he died in 1967. She married
Eldon Lawrence in 1972.
Mrs. Lawrence belonged to Calvary Lutheran Church and enjoyed her birds and her cat.
Surviving are sons Lloyd Valentine Jr. of Lyons, Thomas Valentine of Seymour, Tenn., Ronald Valentine of Eugene and Calvin Valentine of Salem; daughters Alice Olson and Bernice Edwards, both of Eugene, and Matheresa Valentine of Aberdeen, Wash.; sisters Eldora Wagar of Everett, Wash., and Verna Wendt, of Toledo; brother Earl Taylor of Washington. There are 15 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. today at Weddle Funeral Home of Stayton. Mrs. Lawrence's funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with burial to be at Lone Oak cemetery in Stayton.
Victor M. Peek
July 24, 1914 - April 4, 1999
JEFFERSON - Victor M. DeJardin Peek, 84, of Jefferson died Sunday.
He was born in Salem and lived in Salem and Winchester Bay before moving to Jefferson 35 years ago.
Mr. Peek was a commercial fisherman before and during World War II. He fished for shark for the liver which was used in medications. Later he was a hoisting and portable dredging engineer/operator and a tug boat operator out of Reedsport.
Mr. Peek enjoyed creating and designing farm equipment.
Surviving are wife Coranell of Jefferson; sons Keith of Portland and Kenneth of West Linn; daughters Jaquelinn Ben of Salem and Robin Peale of Soldotna, Alaska; and five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
His first wife, Rosalie Peek, died in 1965.
Mr. Peek's funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Belcrest Mausoleum Chapel in Salem. Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service is handling arrangements.
E. Louise Tilley
Sept. 7, 1946 - April 2, 1999
Former Linn County resident E. Louise Tilley, 52, of Redmond died Friday at home.
She was born in Sedgwick, Ark., to William and Roma (McQuay) Bagwell. She moved to Scio in 1956 and attended Scio Schools.
Most of her adult life was lived in the Albany/Jefferson area. She had lived several years in Prineville and had moved to Redmond recently to be near her children.
She married
Glen Tilley Dec. 24, 1994, in Wasco.
Mrs. Tilley worked in law enforcement in Marion and Crook counties. She had served as head of security for Linn-Benton Community College and had touched the lives of many young people, both through her work and through her children's friendships.
Mrs. Tilley enjoyed the outdoors and especially liked fishing and camping.
Surviving are husband Glen; sons Troy Stearns of Redmond and Keith Headley of Bend; daughter Kelly Hanslovan of Redmond; brothers James Bagwell of Poplar Bluff, Mo., Alfred Bagwell of Searcy, Ark., and Jimmy Bagwell of Portia, Ark.; and sisters Verla Cunningham of Palm Springs, Calif., and Vida Horton of Walnut Ridge, Ark. There are 12 grandchildren.
A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Jefferson cemetery.

Mary Teresa Morgan
Aug. 27, 1920 - April 2, 1999
Mary Teresa Morgan, 78, of Albany died Friday following an extended illness.
She was born in International Falls, Minn., to Nick and Margaret (Rubanetz) Hnatiuk.
She grew up in Minnesota and lived in Seattle, Wash., and Clarkston, Idaho, before moving to Albany in 1952. She married
John B. Morgan Aug. 25, 1961.
Mrs. Morgan was Altar Guild president and a member of St. Alban's Episcopal Church, and a board member of the Ukrainian American Cultural Association of Oregon.
She had taught the art of Ukrainian Easter egg decorating.
Surviving are husband John; daughters Pat Riggins of Stroud, Okla., Peggy Polvino-Brown of Las Vegas, Nev., and Pam Barrett of Albany; stepdaughter Judy C. Strawn of Albany; and sister Helen Tostanoski of Security, Colo. There are five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Brothers Eddy and George Hnatiuk and sister Anne Maruk died earlier.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Fisher Funeral Home. Mrs. Morgan's funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Alban's Episcopal Church. Private burial will be at Twin Oaks Memorial Garden.

Rollin `Ron' Schaleger
March 1, 1937 - April 3, 1999
SWEET HOME - The Rev. Rollin "Ron" Schaleger, 62, of Sweet Home died Saturday.
Born in Milwaukee, Wis., he grew up in Milwaukee and in Alton, Ill. He graduated from Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Mo., in 1961.
He had lived in Joliet, Ill.; Buffalo, N.Y.; St. Louis, Mo.; Caldwell, Idaho; Veneta; and Medford. He moved to Sweet Home in 1984.
The Rev. Schaleger was pastor of Bethel Lutheran Church. He owned and operated a Christian art business that specialized in hand-crafted crosses and was a Linn-Benton Community College internet instructor.
He participated in many civic programs in Sweet Home including the Ministerial Association and Sweet Home Drug Free. He served on the boards of The Senior Citizens, the Senior Citizens-Community Center project and the Boys and Girls Club.
He was a volunteer chaplain for the Sweet Home police and Sweet Home Emergency Ministries and a past president of the Lions Club. He participated in the 4-H guide dogs for the blind program.
The Rev. Schaleger enjoyed walking daily and fishing. He was a photojournalist, and a regulator contributor to the Sweet Home New Era.
Surviving are wife Gretchen Marie; daughters Christine Monroe of Deming, Wash., Ruth Robinson of Albany and Martha Schaleger of Sweet Home; sons John of Silverdale, Wash., and David of Lake Oswego; and grandchildren, Caleb, and Kyle Monroe, Kathryn, Christopher, Brittany, Johnathon and Nicholas Schaleger, and Rachelle and Trevor Robinson.
Also surviving are parents John and Irmine (Drews) Schaleger of Stuart, Fla.; sisters Bonnie Drews Schere of Stuart, Fla.; and Theresa Scudamore of Montgomery, Ill.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Bethel Lutheran Church. Workman & Steckly Funeral Chapel is handling arrangements.

Rita I. Newport
October 4, 1913 - July 31, 2007
Rita I. Newport, age 93, of Sweet Home, passed away July 31, 2007.
Rita was born in Hagler, Nebraska to Harry and Mary Ann (Stastny) Fish. She was one of eight children. The family moved to Bromley Ranch, Kansas, then to Culbertson, Nebraska in 1917.
Rita married
James Frank Newport on July 25, 1933 and they moved to Oregon in 1939. They then moved to Sweet Home in 1971.
Rita had several jobs, including working in the shipyards as a pipe welder, head cook at Glacier National Park, nanny, restaurant owner, and restaurant manager at Portland Airport before retiring to be a homemaker.
Rita enjoyed sewing making clothes for her children and grandchildren. She also loved baking and flower gardening.
Rita is survived by children Geraldine Newport-Bitz (daughter) of Mulino, Oregon, Larry L. Newport (son) of Lebanon, Oregon, Dorothy A. Newport-Lomax (daughter) of Gresham, Oregon, Linda R. Newport-Hyke (daughter) of Portland, Oregon, Daniel M. Newport (son) of Wrangle, Alaska, Gregory M. Newport (son) of Lebanon, Oregon. 38 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
Rita was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Newport, December 1987; son, James Paul Newport, January 1965; and daughter, Myrna Lee Newport-Gunnels, in 1999.
A memorial service will take place at 10:30 am on Saturday, August 18, at St. Helens Catholic Church. Sweet Home Funeral Chapel is handling the arrangements.

Pearl Alice Hammons
February 9, 1930 - Jun. 13, 2007
Pearl Hammons, 77, of Sweet Home died Wednesday. She was born to Hansel and Edna (VanZandt) Broyhill in Siloam Springs, Arkansas.
Pearl volunteered for Sunday School and helped at Bible Camp. She used to do all kinds of things and helped pack food for Gleaners. She loved camping and fishing. Pearl was very dedicated to her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by sons, Denver Hammons and Kenneth Hammons; sister, Hattie Benton of Oklahoma; grandchildren, Mike, Andrea, Deanna, Darin, and Darcie; three great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Pearl was preceded in death by husband, Herman Russel “Red” Hammons, three sisters, and one brother.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm Saturday, June 16, 2007 at the First Baptist Church in Sweet Home. Sweet Home Funeral Chapel will be handling the arrangements.
