Jane Deborah Reed
Feb. 5, 1918 - March 28, 1999
Jane Deborah Reed, 81, of Albany died Sunday.
She was born in Ostrander, Ohio, to Clarence and Gladys (Hutchison) Norris. She grew up in Worthington, Ohio, and participated in many sports in her youth. She especially enjoyed rifle marksmanship and archery.
She moved to southern California, where she married
John Reed in 1946. They moved to Portland. Mr. Reed died in 1973 and Mrs. Reed lived in Tigard before moving to Albany.
Mrs. Reed was a homemaker who enjoyed bowling, golfing and swimming. A breast cancer survivor, she volunteered many hours to counsel other women with the disease.
She enjoyed watching her grandchildren grow up.
Surviving are sons Randy of Albany and Larry of Yucaipa, Calif.; daughter Mindy Reed of Bufford, Ga.; brother Jack Norris and sister Bette Grace, both of Columbus, Ohio; and four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A private graveside service will be at Sunset Hills Memorial Park in Portland, with Pastor John Breitmeier officiating.

Vasiliy Samoilich
Sept. 3, 1912 - March 24, 1999
LEBANON - Former Lebanon resident Vasiliy Samoilich, 86, of Salem died Wednesday at Salem Hospital.
Mr. Samoilich was born and grew up in Ukraena, Russia, the son of Mark and Marie Samoilich. He taught elementary school before World War II.
He married
Elena Ivanivna Nazaruk in February 1944. She died in 1998.
After the war, Mr. Samoilich was a farm worker. He moved with his family to Lebanon in 1989. He enjoyed his family, especially the grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and liked attending church and reading the Bible.
Surviving are sons Stephan of Lebanon and Peter of Albany; daughters Olga Guza, Vera Solozhuk, Mariya Benzel and Evdokiya Teshuk, all of Washington, and Valentina Olenich of Salem. There are 39 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Four brothers and three sisters died earlier.
His funeral was Friday at Huston-Jost Funeral Home. Pastor Boyneskiy Yaroslav officiated. Burial was at the Lebanon IOOF cemetery.
Eugene Reeves
Jan. 24, 1924 - March 27, 1999
Former Albany resident Eugene Reeves, 75, of Corvallis died Saturday.
He was born in Norman, Ark., to John and Lena (Roberts) Reeves. He moved to Elma, Wash., at age 3 and to Lebanon at age 15. He completed school in Lebanon.
Mr. Reeves served in the Navy during World War II and moved to Albany in 1955. He moved to Corvallis in 1989.
He married
Hazel Murdock in Stevenson, Wash., and she died in 1987. He married
Betty Rictor in 1988 in Waldport.
Mr. Reeves worked for Oremet for 18 years, retiring in 1989. He especially enjoyed his 1969 Corvette Stingray and liked time spent with his grandchildren. He also liked cars, airplanes, fishing and traveling.
He belonged to the American Streetmaster Car Club of Albany and was a former member of the Eagles Lodge.
Surviving are wife Betty; sons Ronald of Albany and Donald and Jerry, both of Phoenix, Ariz.; and six grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Brothers Joseph and John died earlier.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at AAsum Funeral Home. His funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with Pastor David Nolte officiating.
Contributions in memory of Mr. Reeves may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association.
Mary Sue Ryals
June 14, 1938- March 25, 1999
Mary Sue Ryals, 60, of Harrisburg died Thursday at Sacred Heart Medical Center, Eugene, of complications following coronary bypass surgery.
She was born in Fairland, Okla., to Roy and Margaret Thornhill, and moved to Harrisburg with her family in 1954. She told friends she couldn't believe her parents could get their car across the Rocky Mountains.
She married
Dean Ryals June 9, 1960, in Harrisburg.
The Ryals never had children of their own, but their home was filled with toys and games, diapers and bibs. Several swing sets served long lives in their back yard for the hundreds of children Mrs. Ryals cared for in 41 years as a day care provider. The children called her "Mama Sue."
Mrs. Ryals played piano and organ for church occasions and for the pleasure of herself and her friends. She embellished printed music with notes and flourishes the composers never thought of. She also enjoyed her computer.
She was a member of Valley Christian Center.
Surviving are husband Dean and brother Bob Thornhill of Tulsa, Okla.
The nearly 100 people who attended her graveside service Friday afternoon heard a recording of her playing the organ. The private burial service was at Alford cemetery north of Harrisburg. Pastors Billy Fred Morgan and Wes Wornell officiated.
Murphy-Musgrove Funeral Home of Junction City handled arrangements.
Haman J. Shelton
Nov. 22, 1920 - March 28, 1999
STAYTON - Haman J. Shelton, 78, of Stayton died Sunday.
He was born in Scio and graduated from Scio High School. He lived in Stayton for more than 60 years.
He married
Marjorie Montgomery June 14, 1946.
Mr. Shelton worked driving bulldozers, building roads for Freres Lumber Co. He enjoyed making knives, watching birds, hunting and gardening.
Surviving are wife Marjorie; daughter Cherri Shelton of Stayton; sons Haman "Butch" of Scio and Terry of West Linn; brother Claire of Estacada; and sisters June Kimery of Lyons and Colleen Setterberg of Portland; and seven grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Mr. Shelton's funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Weddle Funeral Home. A private burial service will be at Bilyeu Den cemetery.

Herbert B. Smith
Jan. 3, 1906 - March 27, 1999
Herbert Benjamin "Herb" Smith, 93, of Albany died Saturday at the Mennonite Home.
He was born in Ortonville, Minn., to Benjamin and Mae (Hancock) Smith. He married
Lilah Mae Vandeventer June 1, 1930, in Sioux City, Iowa, and she died in 1984. In 1985 he married
Lilah's sister, Ezma Reimers. She died in 1993.
Mr. Smith moved to Oregon in 1934 and in 1941 became a partner in Bolack and Smith, a real estate firm. Later he was a partner in Parker & Smith, Muller & Smith and Ransom & Smith Real Estate.
He helped several industrial companies locate in the Albany area, including Teledyne Wah Chang and Oremet (now Oremet Wah Chang) and Western Kraft and Duraflake (both part of Willamette Industries). He served as a founding member for Oregon Freeze Dry.
Mr. Smith was honored as Albany First Citizen in 1968 and was president of the Oregon Board of Realtors in 1969. He hosted guests and dignitaries of the Veterans Day celebrations at his duck farm each year. That's how he met and became a friend of General "Jimmy" Doolittle, who spent many days fishing and hunting with him.
Mr. Smith belonged to the Albany First United Methodist Church, serving as finance chairman and helping to raise funds for the church pipe organ. He was on the board of Albany General Hospital and headed the fund drive for the hospital's expansion in the 1970s.
Mr. Smith was past president of the Albany Lions Club, past chairman of the local American Red Cross chapter and past member of the Eagles Lodge. He belonged to the Albany Elks Lodge.
Surviving are sons Richard of Independence, Mo., Benjamin of Port Orchard, Wash., and Duane of Lebanon; and daughters Lois Mosier of Eugene, Shirley Lebow of Corvallis and Loretta Hauk of Upland, Calif. There are 17 grandchildren. 29 great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandchild.
Two brothers and three sisters died earlier.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church.

Karen Kremer- Henderson
Feb. 19, 1964 - March 28, 1999
JEFFERSON - Former Jefferson resident Karen Diane Kremer-Henderson, 35, of Albany died Sunday at Albany General Hospital, following a brief illness.
She was born in Salem and moved to Jefferson, where she graduated from high school. She lived in Jefferson until two years ago, spent a year in Kansas and moved to Albany in 1998.
She worked with her father at Kremer Enterprises and enjoyed collecting pigs and raising her children.
Surviving are fiance Troy Shanks of Albany; son Mitch Henderson of Albany; daughters Kassandra Henderson and Samantha Wilkerson, both of Albany; parents David and Linda Kremer of Salem and Garyl (Gallagher) and Paul Trefethen of Albany; brother Christian Kremer of Jefferson; and grandparents Vincent and Evelyn Kremer of Salem.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday at Fisher Funeral Home. Her funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, followed by burial at Jefferson cemetery.
In Karen Kremer-Henderson's memory, a trust fund will be set up at Key Bank for her children's education.
William H. Place
March 23, 1925 - March 28, 1999
SWEET HOME - William Hiram "Bill" Place, 74, of Wenatchee, Wash., died Sunday at Lebanon Community Hospital. Mr. Place had spent the last few months in Sweet Home.
He was born in LaGarita, Colo., to Steven and Katherine (Curby) Place. He moved to Michigan at age 14, and served in the Navy during World War II.
A rock miner, he traveled with his work. He married
Hazel "Lorraine" Newman July 21, 1990, in Ephrata, Wash., and they settled in Wenatchee in 1994
Mr. Place enjoyed fishing and traveling.
Surviving are wife Lorraine; children William Place Jr. of Bay City, Mich., Robert Place of Coopersville, Mich., and David Place and Bonnie Shoemaker, both of Rockford, Mich., Beverly Dime and Jerri Spicer, both of Grand Haven, Mich., Vicki Sinning of Kentwood, Mich., and Karen Atkinson of Muskegon, Mich.; and stepchildren Larry Schuller of Water Valley, Alberta, Brent Jones of Seattle, Wash., Brad Jones of Spokane, Wash.; Deborah Price of Clayton, N.M., Sandra Schuller of Calgary, Alberta, Lynette Unrau of Terrace, British Columbia, Karen George of Smithers, British Columbia, and Martha Hall of Sweet Home.
Also surviving are sisters Nina Hutson of Sweet Home, Letha Snow of St. Anthony, Idaho, and Pauline Lawrence of Muskegon, Mich.; brother Steve Place of Kennewick, Wash.; stepfather Louis Anjo of Sweet Home; and 31 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Son Thomas Alan Place and sisters Ethel Eckhart and Ina Place died earlier.
Viewing will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Workman & Steckly Funeral Chapel. Mr. Place's funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral chapel, followed by burial at Gilliland cemetery.
Contributions in his name may be made to the Lebanon Community Hospital Hospice.
Gregory A. Culver
October 26, 1916 - July 7, 2007
Gregory A. Culver, age 40, of Halsey died in a water related accident at Green Peter on Saturday July 7, 2007. He was born October 26, 1966 in Anchorage, Alaska to William R. and Ramona (Walburn) Culver. Sweet Funeral Chapel is handling arrangements.
Wilma M. Smith
Jan. 29, 1912 - March 26, 1999
Wilma Martha (Wahl) Smith, 87, of Albany died Friday at the Mennonite Home.
She was born in a country home near Halsey to William and Daisy (Smith) Wahl. She graduated from Halsey High School and attended Oregon State University and Shasta College in California.
She and George William Smith were married
Aug. 16, 1934, the first couple to be married
at the Halsey Methodist Church. They farmed together and moved to the Mennonite Village in 1984. Mr. Smith died in August 1992.
Mrs. Smith was a homemaker and enjoyed playing piano at the Halsey Methodist Church, where she was a member for many years. Recently she belonged to South Albany Community Church.
Known as a wonderful cook, she also enjoyed gardening and sewing.
Surviving are son George of Port Charlotte, Fla.; daughter Diana Headings of Halsey; five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and a nephew. Sister Delma Marsters Wileman died earlier.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Fisher Funeral Home. A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Private burial was at Pine Grove cemetery in Halsey.

Jo Anne Anderson
Feb. 11, 1922 - March 20, 1999
CORVALLIS - Jo Anne Anderson, 77, of Corvallis died Saturday in Punta Arenas, Chile, while vacationing there.
Born in Corvallis, she was the daughter of Joe and Thurza (Boies) Russell. She attended Washington Grade School and was an active member of the 1939 graduating class at Corvallis High School. She attended Oregon State University and was on the synchronized swimming team.
In 1941 she transferred to the University of Washington, where she championed the cause of Japanese students being sent to internment camps.
She married
Charles "Lloyd" Anderson in February 1944. Mr. Anderson was a military pilot who served during World War II. The Andersons lived in South Dakota, Montana and Maine. When he was sent to New Guinea, she returned to Corvallis.
After the war the Andersons bought a farm near Corvallis. In 1954, she contracted polio and was confined to a wheelchair. Mrs. Anderson was named the Oregon Polio Mother of the Year for 1959.
She earned a bachelor's degree in sociology from Oregon State University in 1966, the same year son Joe and daughter Karen graduated.
She worked for Benton County in Corrections and in the Alcohol and Drug Program, retiring in 1986. She was a working founder of the Milestones Family Recovery Program.
Mrs. Anderson was a member of the Corvallis Unitarian Fellowship.
The many civic organizations she belonged to included Benton County Democrats, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the Women's Caucus, the Valley Aids Information Network, the Farmers Union, the Junior Town Club and others.
She was an avid Beaver sports fan, attending Oregon State games with her husband for more than 50 years. She enjoyed her family and liked world travel and playing bridge with several groups. She was known for bringing out the best in others.
Surviving are husband Lloyd; sons Joe Anderson of Bedford, Texas, Eric Anderson of Corvallis, Pete Anderson of San Jose, Calif., and Phil Anderson and Dr. Ole Ersson, both of Portland; daughter Karen Anderson of Corvallis; and 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by sisters Beth Russell of Corvallis, Etta Belle Richards of Houston, Texas, and Alice Hoecker of Eugene; and brother John Russell of Santa Rosa, Calif. Brother Albert Russell died earlier.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Unitarian Fellowship in Corvallis.
