Max Jay Miller
Aug. 22, 1924 - Feb. 2, 1999
Former Albany resident Max Jay Miller, 74, of Elkhart, Ind., died Tuesday at home.
He was born Elkhart, Ind., to David and Fannie (Miller) Miller. He married
Virginia Ruth Emmert Aug. 2, 1947. They lived in Elkhart, Goshen and Albany.
Mr. Miller served in the Army during World War II.
From 1966 until 1972, Mr. Miller worked for Western Propane. He later worked for Marner Miller Travel Equipment. For 15 years he worked for E-Z Gas in Goshen and for 11 years was a master craftsman in Elkhart, working for L.E. Johnson Products. He retired in 1994.
He belonged to the Exchange Club of Goshen and was a former charter member of the Maplecrest Country Club.
Surviving are wife Virginia; daughters Beth Miller of Goshen and Terri Martin of Elkhart; brothers Thomas of Salem and R. Dale of Middlebury, Ind.; and nine grandchildren.
Son Jeffery, brother Delton and sisters Amy and Martha Miller and Naomi Hostetler died earlier.
Visitation will be at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home, Goshen, Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., and at Brenneman Memorial Missionary Church in Goshen Saturday from 9 to 10 a.m. Mr. Miller's funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Church, with Pastors Brian Delbridge and George Nantz officiating. Burial will be at Frame cemetery in Elkhart.

Paul Edward Poitras
Jan. 15, 1927 - Feb. 1, 1999
Paul Edward Poitras, 72, of Albany died Monday at Albany General Hospital.
He was born in The Dalles to Francis and Gertrude (Schindler) Poitras. He graduated in 1945 from Sweet Home High School, where he had been active in football and basketball.
Mr. Poitras served in the Navy during World War II and was reactivated during the Korean War.
He married
Nima Louise Dawson July 22, 1951, in Albany, and they lived in Oregon and California. They moved to Albany in 1972, and his wife died Jan. 11, 1978.
A pipe fitter most of his life, Mr. Poitras had learned the craft while in the Navy. He also had done some logging.
He belonged to the Pipe Fitters Union in Salem, the Eagles Lodge in Albany and the American Legion.
He played pool, was an avid fan of garage sales and especially enjoyed his family.
Surviving are sons Terry, Ronnie and Rick, all of Albany; daughters Sherry Nunez of Corvallis and Diane Poitras of Albany; brothers William of Sweet Home, Lawrence of Albany and Richard of Oakhurst, Calif.; sister Rose Marie Cannon of Coquille; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Albany Eagles Lodge, 127 Broadalbin N.W.

Audrey M. Draper
March 17, 1919 - Feb. 7, 1999
Audrey Marie Draper, 79, of Albany died Sunday at Good Samaritan Hospital in Corvallis.
She was born in Seattle to Arthur and Ethel (Wheeler) Carpenter. She graduated from Pendleton High School in 1937.
She married
Edgar E. Draper July 25, 1940, in Pendleton. They lived in La Grande until 1968, when they moved to Albany.
Mrs. Draper was a secretary in the counseling office at Linn-Benton Community College until her 1984 retirement.
She especially enjoyed music and was a church organist in La Grande, Corvallis and Albany. She gave piano lessons.
Mrs. Draper belonged to the Christian Church - Disciples of Christ and was a member of the EZ Chapter of PEO. She was fond of animals.
Surviving are husband Edgar; sons Dean of Houston, Texas, and Fred of Albany; daughters Jane Siebler of Corvallis and Julie Draper of Portland; and 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
A celebration of Mrs. Draper's life will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Albany First Christian Church in the fellowship hall.

Douglas E. Ritchie
Feb. 7, 1934 - Feb. 6, 1999
Dr. Douglas Everett Ritchie, 64, of Albany died Sunday at home.
He was born in Hondo, Calif., to Douglas W. and Louise (Davison) Ritchie. He grew up in Temple City, Calif., and became an Eagle Scout.
He attended John Muir Junior College in Pasadena and graduated from the University of Southern California School of Dentistry in 1958.
He married
Steffany Pinkstaff in Altadena, Calif., in 1955.
Dr. Ritchie served in the Naval Reserves from 1955 to 1968, and retired as a lieutenant.
In California he taught operative dentistry at USC and served on the Tournament of Roses Committee.
The Ritchies moved to Albany, and he opened his dentistry practice. He was a member of the American Dental Association.
Active in civic affairs, Dr. Ritchie was a past president of the Timber Carnival Association. He had belonged to the Albany Woodpeckers, was a charter member and past president of the Linn-Benton Concert Band and a member of the Albany Kiwanis Club.
He served on the board of the Calapooia Scouting Group and belonged to the National Rifle Association, the Northwest Steelheaders, the Porsche Club of America and the Radio Relay League (call sign W7AEP).
Dr. Ritchie was a member of St. Matthews Episcopal Church in Eugene.
Surviving are wife Steffany; son Keith of Ramona, Calif.; daughter Denise Smith of Warrenton, Va.; sister Gene Wicker of Wittier, Calif.; and eight grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at the First Christian Church, 432 Ferry St. S.W., Albany. An inurnment service will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, 4110 River Road, Eugene.

Lee C. Armstrong
Sept. 14, 1911 - Feb. 7, 1999
CORVALLIS - Lee Crawford Armstrong, 87, of Corvallis died Sunday.
He was born in Creston, Iowa to William and Bertha (Richardson) Armstrong. He served in the Navy during World War II, taking part in operations at Luzon, Iwo Jima, Okinawa and Palau Island.
He married
Mary Egner Jan. 5, 1937, in Long Beach, Calif. They lived in Long Beach until 1974, when they moved to Corvallis. Mrs. Armstrong died in 1987.
Mr. Armstrong was a letter carrier for the Postal Service from 1945 until his retirement in 1973. He enjoyed dancing and playing bingo. He belonged to the Albany American Legion Post and the Corvallis Moose, Elks and Eagles lodges.
Surviving are daughter Theresa Armstong of Corvallis; son Leland of Portland; and companion Doris Seghetti of Corvallis. Sister Pauline Kelleher died earlier.
A ritualistic funeral service will be conducted by the Corvallis Moose Lodge at 10 a.m. Thursday at McHenry Funeral Home. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Willamette National cemetery in Portland.
Charles "Frank" Rice
August 12, 1928 - April 3, 2007
Frank rejoices in the presence of the Lord after a lengthy struggle with Kidney Disease. His last days were spent at home receiving loving care from his wife, Susan, and the watchful eye of his furry companion, Zeke.
He was born in Georgetown, IL, the son of Frank and Ino (Ramsey) Rice. Frank served in the US Army, 40th Infantry Division, during the Korean Conflict from 1950-1952.
Frank retired from AT&T in 1987 after 34 years. At that time the family relocated from Illinois to Phoenix, AZ. In 2002, a move to Sweet Home from Camp Verde, AZ was necessary due to health needs. He and his wife became active members of the Sweet Home Evangelical Church, and he continued his activities with his Kiwanis Club.
His many interests included woodworking, motorcycling, gardening, reading—loved his bible, and traveling. In the past few years his health prevented his one true enjoyment... motorcycling. Susan was a source of encouragement to help him attain optimum enjoyment of life.
Frank was a kind, soft-spoken, gentle, Godly man, and had an impish grin that made you wonder what he was thinking. He loved his family and will be greatly missed. He leaves behind his wife, Susan of 24 years; sons, Tim and wife Nancy of Pleasant Plains, IL, Tad and wife Vicki of Springfield, IL; daughters, Sheila and husband Rick of Ramona, CA, Amanda and husband Ted of Phoenix, AZ; three grandsons and three granddaughters. Parents had preceded Frank in death.
Memorial services will be held at 11 am on Saturday, April 14th, at the Sweet Home Evangelical Church located at 1347 Long Street.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution may be made to Samaritan Evergreen Hospice c/o Sweet Home Funeral Chapel located at 1443 Long Street. Remembrances to the family may be mailed to PO Box 141 Sweet Home, OR 97386. Sweet Home Funeral Chapel is handling the arrangements.
Ethel Rose Giersch
May 30, 1917 - Feb. 6, 1999
Ethel Rose Giersch, 81, died Saturday at home.
Ethel was born and educated in Albany, the daughter of Joseph and Ruth (Halsey) Feuerstein. She lived in Seattle and returned to Albany, where she married
Lloyd Giersch. He died earlier.
Mrs. Giersch worked for several years for JC Penney's. She was fond of people, especially her doctors.
Surviving are twin sister Effie Packard of Corvallis; sister Joan Godkin of Salem; and brother Robert Feuerstein of Lacomb. Brother Donald and sisters Helen Farrer and Virginia Hansen died earlier.
A graveside service will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Twin Oaks Memorial Gardens, with Pastor Darrell Mishler officiating. Contributions in Mrs. Giersch's name may be made to the Stevens family, in care of AAsum Funeral Home, 805 Ellsworth St. S., Albany, Ore. 97321.
Denise L. Joerger
Feb. 3, 1951 - Feb. 6, 1999
Denise Leann Joerger, 48, of Albany, died Wednesday of complications from diabetes.
Born in Central City, Neb., she had attended two years of college.
She married
Patrick Joerger July 3. 1976, in Lake Tahoe, Nev. They moved from Millerstown, Pa., to Albany 10 years ago.
Mrs. Joerger was an insurance agent for several years and was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Albany.
Surviving are husband Patrick; sons Patrick Jr. and Michael, both of Albany; mother Dorothy Jacobsen of Sloughouse, Calif.; and brothers Dan, David and Dana Jacobsen, all of California.
Private family services will be scheduled later. Rigdon-Ransom's Keizer Chapel is handling arrangements.
Elizabeth D. Larsson
Nov. 25, 1914 - Feb. 6, 1999
JEFFERSON - Elizabeth D. "Betty" Larsson, 84, of Jefferson died Saturday at home.
She was born in Lenox, Mass., to Henry and Honora Doran. She served in the Navy Air Corps during World War II, stationed at a base in Atlanta, Ga., where she was a tower operator and link trainer instructor.
She married
Harold Larsson Sept. 13, 1948, in Great Neck, Long Island. The Larssons lived in New York, and in California at Pasadena, San Juan Capistrano and Laguna Beach. She moved to Jefferson in 1997, during her illness, to be near her daughters. She attended Grace Center.
Mrs. Larsson graduated from Columbia University in 1950. She was an engineer for AT&T in New York and in Hollywood, Calif. She belonged to the Democratic Club of Laguna Beach, Calif.
Surviving are husband Harold of Imperial, Calif.; son Eric of Shingleton, Calif.; daughters Morning Star Holmes of Jefferson and Carole Boaz of Corvallis; and eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Twin Oaks Memorial Gardens., with military honors by the Corvallis American Legion Post.

Mary Etta Rensink
Feb. 3, 1904 - Feb. 4, 1999
Former Albany resident Mary Etta Rensink, 95, of Arlington, Wash., died Thursday.
She was born in Everson, Wash., and lived in Darrington, Wash., before moving to Albany in 1966.
Mrs. Rensink belonged to the Albany First Assembly of God and was active in the Women's Mission Circle.
Surviving are daughters Blanche McClinchy of Arlington, Wash., Vivian Tollenaar of Darrington, Wash., Evelyn Bryson of Murphy, N.C., and Beverly Rensink of Yreka, Calif.; son Ernest of Renton, Wash.; and 18 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at Weller Funeral Home in Washington. Mrs. Rensink's funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Glad Tidings assembly of God in Darrington, Wash., followed by burial at Darrington cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Albany First Assembly of God, Missions-Mexico.
Don Seals
March 16, 1950 - Feb. 7, 1999
LEBANON - Don Seals, 48, of Lebanon died of liver disease Sunday at a Veterans Administration hospital.
Mr. Seals was born in Pettigrew, Ark., and moved to Lebanon at age 18. He married
Elaine Fritz July 2, 1982.
He worked for the Champion International Lumber Mill in Lebanon until it closed. He worked several years in Albany for Discovery Plastics. He was an avid fisherman who also enjoyed hunting.
Surviving are wife Elaine; sons Jeremy Seals of Portland and Chris Ritesman of Lebanon; brothers David and Howard, both of Lebanon; sisters Debbie Seals and Charlotte Hill, both of Lebanon, and Joyce Robertson of Porter, Okla.
His parents and a brother died earlier.
A celebration of Mr. Seals' life will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the home of brother David Seals, 720 Central Ave., Lebanon. Private inurnment will be at Willamette National cemetery.
