Edna 'Anne' Hammond

Obit dated: April 19, 2008

Edna "Anne" Hammond, 98, a longtime resident of Brookings, died April 15, 2008, at Sutter Coast Hospital in Crescent City, Calif., of natural causes.

She had spent the last 17 months of her life in a skilled nursing facility in Crescent City.

She was born on April 20, 1909, in Minonk, Ill., to John Harms and Hedrig H. Kark Harms.

She left school early to help with the family.

At age 17, her father sent her out to earn her own way.

She finished high school and attended several colleges to qualify as a Christian parish worker.

She began working in this ministry after graduating from Moody Bible Institute in Chicago in 1941.

As she worked and sang in the ministry, Miss Harms continued studies at various colleges.

Her college glee club sang in a Billy Sunday revival in upstate New York, and she worked with the founder of Child Evangelism Fellowship in Iowa, and continued working with CEF in Minnesota and other states.

Miss Harms also worked with an Indian church in Canada, the Covenant Church in Minneapolis, a Covenant Church in Austin, Ill., as well as churches in California and Arizona.

She met Franklin Morton Hammond at a California Covenant Church Conference.

The couple married in 1963.

They lived for a time in Fresno, Calif., where she worked for the Fresno County district attorney as his administrative secretary.

The Hammonds moved to Brookings in 1977 and built a house on Oceanview Drive, where they lived for nearly 30 years.

The Hammonds attended several local churches in Brookings including the Presbyterian, Baptist, and Living Waters Foursquare churches.

Mrs. Hammond was a detail person and could keep telephone numbers and account numbers in her head.

She was a lifelong reader and learner with varied interests, but always loved reading the Bible.

She kept notes in the margins of her Bible and thoughts about how she wanted to grow mentally and spiritually in her life.

She enjoyed playing table games.

Scrabble was a lifelong favorite.

She prepared delicious food and hosted guests with great pleasure, her family said.

She is survived by her sister, Elsie Baumann of Minonk, Ill.; brother Glenn Harms of Lexington, Ill.; children and their spouses Frances and Neal Neuenburg of Chico, Calif., Rolland and Carolyn Hammond of Elsinore, Utah; grandchildren Michael Neuenburg, Melody Neuenburg Driggers, Mathew Neuenburg and Michell Hammond; great-grandchildren Lisa Marie Wiggett, Kimberly Ann Wiggett, Riley William Neuenburg and Alexander James Neuenburg.

She will be cremated and her ashes mingled with those of her husband, Franklin, and buried under an old oak tree in the Neuenburgs' backyard in Chico.

Her son-in-law, Neal Neuenburg, a Methodist minister, will commit her remains with prayer as her family gathers.

Jamie Elizabeth Hoy

Obit dated: May 24, 2008

Jamie Elizabeth Hoy, 18, of Brookings, died May 18, 2008, as a result of a car accident near Harbor.

She was born Sept. 22, 1989, in San Bernardino, Calif., and was adopted by Lois Mary Hoy.

She was raised in California and moved to Brookings as a young child.

She attended elementary school in Gold Beach and Brookings, and Azalea Middle School and Brookings-Harbor High School in Brookings.

She loved life, and enjoyed the outdoors.

The highlight of her life was becoming a mother to her son Evan Kyle Smith, now 3 months old.

She is survived by her mother Lois Mary Hoy of Brookings; son Evan Kyle Smith of Brookings; brother Kyle Garr of California; aunts Barbara West, Maryann Oka and Sue Hoy, all of Brookings; and family and many friends in Brookings and throughout the United States.

A memorial fund for the benefit of her son has been established in the name of Evan Kyle Smith at Chetco Federal Credit Union, P.O. Box 1197, Brookings, OR 97415.

Private family services were Friday, May 23, 2008, at Redwood Memorial Chapel, 1020 Fifield St.

Arrangements were under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel.

William Earl Willard

Obit dated: May 21, 2008

William Earl Willard, 74, of Salem, died May 15, 2008, at his son's home in Salem, from a lengthy illness.

He was born Feb. 5, 1934, in Coquille, to Loren and Lorena Willard.

He served in the U.S. Navy in New Orleans and Guam.

He graduated from University of Oregon.

Mr. Willard taught and coached in the following Oregon high schools: Monroe, from 1960 to 1963; Brookings, from 1963 to 1965; Klamath Falls, from 1965 to 1970; and Rogue River, from1975 to 1993.

His teams won numerous state championships.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years Velita Batty-Willard of Salem; daughters and sons-in-law Lorita and her husband Mick Cushman of Medford, Juli and her husband Bill Miller of Portugal; son Bob of Salem; foster son and daughter-in-law Bruce and Sue Knipe of Camano Island, Wash.; grandchildren Jim Huddleston, Greg and Steven Miller, Mac and Shenan Knipe; sister and brother-in-law, Lorna and Roy Zeller; nieces Patty, Diane, Sharon and Marcia Zeller; nephew Gary Carroll.

He was preceded in death by his parents and son Jerry.

Visitation will be from noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 27, at Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service, 605 Commercial St., S.E., in Salem.

A graveside service will be at noon Wednesday, May 28, at Willamette National cemetery, 11800 S.E. Scott Blvd., Portland.

A Celebration of Life will follow at 4 p.m. at Bellfountain Community Church 25387 Dawson Road, Bellfountain.

Arrangements under the direction of Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.

Clarence Sheldon Donaca

Obit dated: May 24, 2008

Clarence Sheldon Donaca, 68, of Gold Beach, died May 21, 2008, in Gold Beach of natural causes.

He was born Nov. 29, 1939, to Robert W. and Mildred Warnick Donaca at home in the old Wedderburn Hotel that had been converted into apartments.

In 1945, the family suffered the deaths of Mr. Donaca's grandfather, father and brother.

The family was living in the Jerry's Flat area when Mr. Donaca started school in Gold Beach.

They moved to Euchre Creek in 1948 and he finished school at Ophir in 1958.

His favorite things growing up were hunting, fishing, playing basketball and learning to play the guitar.

As an adult, he entertained himself and many others with his guitar music.

To many he was considered an excellent guitarist, his family said.

On Dec. 30, 1961, Mr. Donaca married Karen Huitt at the home of her parents in Squaw Valley (now Cedar Valley).

He always wanted to be a log truck driver like his father and drove lots of miles and hauled lots of logs and truly enjoyed his work that allowed him to be outdoors.

His family remembers him as a loving husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather, cousin to many, and friend.

He is survived by wife Karen; daughter Shannon; son Scott; granddaughters Kayla and Whitney; brother Bob and his wife Linda; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Richard and sister Helen.

Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 31, 2008, with a potluck following at the Gold Beach Senior Center.

Arrangements under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel.
