Earl Pepin
Earl Darrel Pepin, 81, of Toledo died at the Veterans Nursing Home in Vancouver, Wash. on March 27, 1999.
He was born in Portland on Feb. 2, 1918. He had been a resident of Toledo for the past 56 years. He married his wife, Nelda, in Winnemucca, Nev. on April 30, 1982.
For 30 years, he was employed as a construction worker with Coast Crane; he retired at age 65. He was a veteran of World War II, and served in the Navy. He was a member of Newport American Legion Post #116.
Survivors include his wife, Nelda, of Toledo; nieces Florence Hooker of Newport and Judy Prindle of Corvallis; and a nephew, Donny Hopkins of Sweet Home.
Services were held Tuesday at Bateman Funeral Home in Newport. Interment was in Eureka Cemetery in Newport. Bateman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Joy Bates
Joy Doty Bates, 68, of of West Linn died of leukemia on Feb. 23, 1999.
She was born in Waldport on Oct. 17, 1930. She spent most of her childhood in Waldport, except for two years in Portland during World War II.
While living in Waldport in 1946, she met and married David James Bates on Aug. 6, 1949 in the Catholic church in Waldport. They moved to Corvallis, where Mr. Bates finished his undergraduate work; they then moved to California while Mr. Bates pursued graduate work at Stanford University.
They moved to California in 1952, and Mrs. Bates attended Foothill College and San Francisco State during the 1970s, where she majored in fine arts. After returning to Oregon in 1979, she specialized in art photography and exhibited her work in Seattle, throughout the Willamette Valley, and in Palo Alto, Calif. She belonged to many art organizations and finished her art education at Marylhurst College in 1994.
Survivors include her husband, David, of West Linn; daughters Carol Jean Ramirez of Granite Bay, Calif., Jeanette Marie Price of Palmer, Alaska, and Laura Anne Brooke of Portland; sons David James Bates Jr. of North Miami Beach, Fla. and Paul Evans Bates of Islamorada, Fla.; a sister, Elva Mae Galloway of Mina, Nev.; six grandchildren; and many cousins in the Newport area.
A memorial service was held Feb. 28 at Riverview Cemetery Chapel in Portland. Private interment was held later at the Willamette National Cemetery. Donations to the Leukemia Society of America were suggested.
Claud "Blondie" Sagraves
Claud "Blondie" Sagraves, 75, of Waldport died at his home on March 29, 1999.
He was born in West Virginia on May 28, 1923 to Richard and Pearl Carol Sagraves. He had been a resident of Waldport since 1993 and lived in Toledo from 1961 to 1993.
He married Doris L. Craycraft in Newberry, Mich. on June 3, 1945; she preceded him in death in 1989. For 32 years, he had worked at Georgia-Pacific Corp. in Toledo, before retiring in 1981.
He is survived by his daughters Delores McKuhn of Newport; Lois Lowery and Lori Sagraves, both of Waldport; and Peggy Carr of Toledo; a son, Richard Sagraves, of Waldport; 20 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Bateman Funeral Home in Newport. Interment will be in Eureka Cemetery, Newport. Bateman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Edward Boyd
Edward Arlington Boyd, 77, of Waldport died at Newport Rehabilitation & Specialty Care Center on March 27, 1999.
He was born in San Antonio, Texas on April 27, 1927 to H.O. and Mary Boyd. He had been a resident of Waldport for the past four years.
He married Phyllis M. Malloy in Everett, Wash. on Feb. 8, 1942; she preceded him in death in 1998. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict, and spent 24 years in the Air Force. He was a member of the Waldport Masonic Lodge.
He is survived by his daughter, Charlene Slaughter of Fairfield, Calif.; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
At the decedent's request, no services are planned. Disposition is by cremation, with Bateman Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Paul Creech
Paul Creech, 87, of Newport died at Newport Rehabilitation & Specialty Care Center on March 30, 1999.
He was born in Chehalis, Wash. on Jan. 15, 1912 to Elisha L. and Maggie Breeding Creech. He had been a resident of Newport for the past 30 years.
He was an Army veteran of World War II. He married Agnes Momberg in Vancouver, Wash. on Nov. 17, 1947. He had worked as a baker for 40 years, and retired in 1970. He was a member of the Newport Elks Lodge #2105 and the Agate Beach Men's Golf Club.
He is survived by his wife, Agnes Creech, of Newport.
Donations are suggested to Pacific Communities Hospital Foundation for Hospice, 930 SW Ninth St., Newport 97365. Memorial services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Bateman Funeral Home. Bateman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Ronald Garrison
Ronald David Garrison, 60, of Siletz died of cancer at his home on April 3, 1999.
He was born in Opdyke, Ill. on Sept. 1, 1938 to Charles and Leola Shepherd Garrison. He moved to Oregon in 1942, where his father went to work in the shipyards during World War II. The family moved to Toledo in 1947. He graduated from Toledo High School in 1956. In 1957, he enlisted in the Navy, where he served for 10 years, the last of that time in Vietnam. After his discharge in 1967, he moved to Las Vegas, where he worked for 30 years.
Survivors include his sister and brother-in-law, Jeanne and Frank Lyons of Siletz; his aunt, Myrtle Somers of Twenty Nine Palms, Calif.; his nephew, Randy Lyons of Phoenix, Ariz.; nieces Marilyn Smith of Toledo, Carol Fountain of Jefferson and Brenda Butler of Siletz; three great-nephews; five great-nieces; three great-great-nephews; and one great-great-niece. He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles, in 1936; his father in 1978; and his mother in 1984.
At his request, no services are planned. Disposition is by cremation, with Bateman Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Rita McClellan
Rita McClellan, 68, of Bend died April 12, 1999 at St. Charles Medical Center in Bend.
She was born in Elma, Wash. on Dec. 2, 1930 to Hubert and Katy (Wolkau) Ewing. She lived in Toledo as a girl. She attended junior high school in Newport and high school in Toledo. She was a member of the high school choir.
She married Bob McClellan in Toledo on Sept. 13, 1952. They lived in Albany, Corvallis and Sunriver before moving to Bend in 1969. She worked in food service for 60 years, and was employed at Bachelor Butte Nursing Home and Jake's Truck Stop.
She enjoyed sewing, quilting, reading and county music.
Survivors include her husband, Robert, of Bend; a son and daughter-in-law, Kerry C. and Karen McClellan of New Ulm, Minn.; a sister, Elanore Goodell of Redmond; and two grandsons.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today (Friday) at Deschutes Memorial Funeral Chapel. Viewing will be held before the service starting at 9 a.m. Chaplain Bill Danaher will officiate. Donations are suggested to the Bend-LaPine Hospice. Deschutes Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Ruth Thissell
Ruth Thissell, 93, of Corvallis died April 13, 1999 in Waldport.
She was born in Seattle, Wash. on Dec. 9, 1905 to Frank and Mollie (Sandell) Hurt. The family moved to the Alsea Valley when she was 9 years old.
She married Frank Thissell in Toledo. They moved to a homestead 17 miles up the Alsea River, where they lived for 10 years. They later moved to the Corvallis area, where she lived for 27 years.
Mrs. Thissell enjoyed making quilts and embroidered pillow cases. She was a member of the Oakville Willamette United Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, James "Bud" and Florence Thissell of Tidewater and Neil and Lenora Phillips of Alsea; a daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy and Bob Hughey of Corvallis; brothers and sister-in-law Jimmie Hurt of Waldport and Frances and Minerva Hurt of Dallas; 11 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1976; a daughter, June Phillips in 1977; two sisters; and her parents.
Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. today (Friday) at Fisher Funeral Home, 306 SW Washington, Albany. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Oakville Willamette United Presbyterian Church, 29970 Church Drive, Shedd, with Pastor John Carpenter officiating. Private interment will be held at Oakville Cemetery.
