Kitty B. Beyerlin

Obit dated: October 7, 2006

Kitty B. Beyerlin, 80, of Harbor, died Oct. 4, 2006, at her home of natural causes.

She was born Aug. 6, 1926, in Redmond, to John C. and Velma Wilson Oakes.

She graduated from Redmond High School.

She resided her last 20 years in Harbor. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by her husband Bruce of Harbor; son Robbie Roberts of Vancouver, Wash.; and brother Allan Oakes of Seattle, Wash.

No services are planned. Burial at Roseburg Memorial Park will be at a later date.

Arrangements and cremation under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel.

Genevieve Lucille Mitchell

Obit dated: August 30, 2006

Genevieve Lucille Mitchell, 98, of Brookings, died Aug. 3, 2006, at Sutter Coast Hospital in Crescent City, Calif., of natural causes.

She was born Sept. 21, 1907, in Utah.

She married Ellwood Mitchell in 1943, in Los Angeles.

She lived in Brookings three years. Previously she lived in Lytle Creek, Calif., for 20 years and Rialto, Calif., for 13 years.

She worked as a Realtor six years, retiring in 1965. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints First Ward in Rialto and later the Brookings Ward.

Survivors include her son Robert "Bob"Lewis of Brookings; stepson Gary Mitchell of Red Bluff, Calif. Also surviving are four grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Ellwood Mitchell in 1983.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 2, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 770 Elk Drive, in Brookings.

Donald Davis Hoag

Obit dated: October 7, 2006

Donald Davis Hoag, 76, of Brookings, died Sept. 28, 2006, in a hospital in Medford, of natural causes.

He was born June 16, 1930, in Los Angeles to Edgar Davis and Josephine Haskell Hoag.

He grew up in Lone Pine, Calif., and later moved to the Los Angeles area.

After graduating from high school, Mr. Hoag joined the U.S. Army and served in Japan during the Korean War.

Upon his honorable discharge, he attended University of Southern California (USC) and earned a degree in civil engineering.

He married Ruth Sherman March 25, 1989, in Palos Verdes, Calif.

His career spanned 48 years practicing in Los Angeles and then in Brookings for the last 13 years. He enjoyed his work and the people he worked with.

He was a member of the Tournament of Roses for 20 years and enjoyed helping make sure the parade progressed down Colorado Boulevard on time, as planned. In his spare time he enjoyed reading, visits with family and friends, traveling with his wife and watching the USC Trojans have record-setting seasons. He took great pride in his garden and the beautiful flowers he grew. He was a wonderful man with a big heart, his family said.

Survivors include his wife Ruth; daughter Susan and her husband Stephen Mathis and their children Alison, Amanda and Donald of Mojave, Calif.; son Bill Hoag and his wife Debbie and their children Jennifer and William Jr. of Florida; sister Pat and her husband Bob Smith of Dewey, Ariz.

A celebration of his life will be at noon Friday, Oct. 27, at the Brookings Elks Lodge 1934, 800 Elk Drive, in Brookings.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to South Coast Humane Society, P.O. Box 7833, Brookings OR 97415.

Helen Katherine Brace

Obit dated: August 30, 2006

Helen Katherine Brace, 86, of Brookings, died Aug. 20, 2006, at her home of natural causes.

She was born Aug. 23, 1919, in the Swedish community of Elgarose, to Alfred Sigfried and Olivia Pierson Anderson.

She was raised in Elgarose and graduated from nearby Roseburg High School.

Following school, she worked as a maid in San Francisco, before moving to Portland to help in the war effort. She welded at the Portland shipyards during World War II.

She married Don Edward Brace Feb. 25, 1944, in Vancouver, Wash.

They lived in Portland, Roseburg and Grants Pass before settling in Brookings in 1968.

During the 1970s and early 1980s, Mrs. Brace worked in the meat department of Hanscam's General Store.

She was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker, her family said. She had a keen sense of humor and particularly enjoyed the times she spent laughing with her family. She also enjoyed gardening, sewing and embroidery. She especially enjoyed a cruise to Alaska she took with her husband, sister, and daughter.

Following their retirement, the Braces explored the western United States and traveled in their RV for 10 years.

Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law Don E. and Theresa Brace of Rogue River; Wayne L. and Susan Brace of Merlin, Timothy L. and Joy Brace of Ashland, Scott A. and Kathy Brace of Gold Beach, and Clifford G. and Darcie Brace of Canby; daughter Carolyn O. Brace of Harbor; sister Hilda Hedberg of Brookings. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Don, April 19, 2006; sisters Freda, Agnes, Elnora and Esther; brothers Algot, Herbert and Carl.

Private inurnment and a family service will take place at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Grants Pass.

Memorial donations may be made in her name to Curry County Hospice, P.O. Box 746, Brookings, OR 97415.

Arrangements by Redwood Memorial Chapel and Crematory.

Vernon Lee Pettegrew

Obit dated: October 7, 2006

Vernon Lee Pettegrew, 68, of Harbor, died Oct. 4, 2006, at his home of natural causes.

He was born June 27, 1938, in Harbor to Leland William and Thelma LaVern Hanscam Pettegrew. His family has lived in the Harbor area continuously since 1948.

He graduated from Brookings High School in 1956, and then went to work at Brookings Plywood for many years. Recently he had worked for the U.S. Forest Service.

Much of his spare time was spent mowing lawns for senior citizens around the area and caring for his mother, who survives him.

He was a member of the local Elks Lodge.

Mr. Pettegrew had a love for old cars and enjoyed working on them. He liked camping in the outdoors. Fried potatoes and onions anytime of the day was his favorite meal. Since he did not have his own close family, he enjoyed family gatherings on the holidays.

He is survived by his mother Thelma Pettegrew of Harbor; sister and brother-in-law Joan and Vernon Crockett of Coquille; brother Mervin Pettegrew of Harbor; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and many close friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Leland, and a longtime companion, Debbie Neimi.

Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. today (Oct 7), at the First Baptist Community Church, 607 Pacific Ave., Brookings, with Pastor Ken Whitted officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel.

Frank J. Brum

Obit dated: October 7, 2006

Frank J. Brum, 88, of Roseburg, died Oct. 3, 2006, in Roseburg of natural causes.

He was born Oct. 2, 1919, in Bakersfield, Calif.

He attended school in San Fernando, Calif.

He joined the U.S. Army serving during World War II in Northern France, Normandy and Rhineland Central Europe Ardennes.

Mr. Brum married Leona F. Crow Nov. 13, 1942, in White City.

After Mr. Brum's honorable discharge, the couple moved to San Fernando.

They returned to the Rogue Valley in 1948. They moved to Glendale in 1953.

In 1962, they moved to Brookings, living here until 1996, when Mrs. Baum became ill. After her death, Mr. Brum moved to Roseburg.

Survivors include his daughter Sharon Foster of Eugene; sons Lanny Brum and wife Tonya of Pahrump, Nev., Carl Brum and wife Cindy of Las Vegas, Nev. Also surviving are seven grandchildren and four great-grand children.

A private service will be in Eagle Point.

Arrangements under the direction of Wilson Chapel of the Roses, Roseburg.

Orvilla Rose' Steineke

Orvilla "Rose" Steineke, 68, of Brookings, died Sept. 1, 2006, at her home of natural causes.

Services times and a full obituary will be published at a later date.

Arrangements under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel, Brookings.

Joseph Jean Louis Gagnon

Obit dated: August 12, 2006

Joseph Jean Louis Gagnon, 84, of Brookings died July 17, 2006, at the Chetco Inn of natural causes.

He was born July 8, 1922, in Ile-Verte, Quebec, Canada, to Bruno and Emilie Levesque Gagnon.

He attended school at Lawrence High School and after graduation he was drafted into the U.S. Air Force. He became a U.S. citizen and proudly served from 1942 to 1965. During World War II he was a translator in Belgium as well as an aircraft mechanic. He received several distinguished awards upon his release from the service at Oxnard Air Force Base, Calif., in August of 1965.

He married Therese M. Bosse, Feb. 4, 1950, in Lawrence, Mass.

Mr. Gagnon was a champion cribbage player. He spent many hours tinkering on old cars. He took great joy in his family and watching his grandchildren play sports.

Survivors include his sons John B. Gagnon of Oxnard, Calif., Brian J. Gagnon of Brookings, Joseph L. Gagnon of Santa Barbara, Calif.; daughters and sons-in law Michele G. and Dr. Greg Aitchison of Bandon, Helene M. and Dr. Frank Robinson of Ventura, Calif.; sister Germaine Dilendik of Methuen, Mass. Also surviving are six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Therese, and sister Susan Nolin.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 31 W. Sixth St., Medford, OR 97501-2704.

Burial will be at the Eagle Point National cemetery in Eagle Point.

Cremation is under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel and Crematory.
