Vernadell Mann
Obit dated: October 14, 2006
Vernadell Mann, 71, of Brookings, died Oct. 10, 2006, at a local care facility from complications of cancer.
A Chetco Native Indian, she was born Dec. 2, 1934, in Harbor to Clinton B. and May Magnolia (VanPelt) Jordan. She lived in Harbor until the family moved to Crescent City, Calif., during the years from 1945 to 1951.
On July 25, 1951, she married
Milo Morse Mann in Eureka, Calif. Mr. Mann was serving in the Army during the Korean War, and during this time Mrs. Mann and their oldest child lived with family in Salinas, Calif.
Following his discharge, the family returned to Brookings, where Mrs. Mann was a homemaker and raised four children.
In 1978, the Manns relocated to Alaska for seasonal work, wintering in Brookings until retirement in 1992.
She was a member of the Brookings Seventh-day Adventist Church, and had served as a deaconess for many years.
Mrs. Mann loved animals, and could usually be found nursing a stray or wild animal back to health at the family homeplace. She liked to beachcomb, and collected rocks from her many travels.
Most of all, she loved all children, her family said, and cherished time spent with her own children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She will be remembered by her family as nonjudgmental, with a gift for accepting others for who they were, and making them feel loved.
Mrs. Mann also enjoyed writing poetry, and had completed a journal of poems.
She is survived by her children Michael Mann and Margaret "Maggie" Mann, both of Brookings, Milo Mann and his wife Susan of Maui, Hawaii, and Marilyn Gildersleeve and husband Richard of Wrangell, Alaska; brother Elmer Jordan and his wife Geri of Brookings; sisters Joyce Phillips and husband Jim of Harbor and Jeanette and Rodney Giddings of Siletz; grandchildren Caleb, Cindy, Craig, Mark, Misty, Telitha, Joshuaa, Haley; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Milo on Sept. 17 of this year; sisters Ruby Adkins and Wilma Boe; brothers Robert Jordan, Harvey Jordan, Everett Jordan, and Marvin Jordan.
A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 15, at the Seventh-day Adventist Church, 102 Park Ave., with Rev. Jim Ball and Rev. Charles Shultz officiating.

Edward A. Gilzow
Obit dated: October 14, 2006
Edward A. Gilzow, 74, of Brookings, died Oct. 1, 2006, in a local hospital of natural causes.
He was born Nov. 15, 1931, in Rochester, N.Y., where he was raised and educated.
At the age of 18, he joined the U.S. Air Force and served four years.
Following his honorable discharge in 1953, Mr. Gilzow taught ballroom dancing at the Arthur Murray Dance Studio.
Most of his working career was in the gaming field. He had worked for several different casinos in Washington and Nevada in a variety of positions from blackjack dealing to floor management.
Mr. Gilzow retired in 1994, and subsequently moved to Brookings to be near friends.
He was a religious man, and had read the Bible faithfully.
He enjoyed cooking, watching baseball, and had been an avid golfer in his younger years. He was also a dive master, and had logged dives in many areas, including the Great Barrier Reef.
Survivors include his friends Shirley, Amber and Jason Curasi, all of Brookings.
Cremation is under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel & Crematory.
Mina Coppinger Smock
Obit dated: October 14, 2006
Mina Coppinger Smock, 85, of Brookings, died Sept. 30, 2005, last year, in a local care facility after a long illness.
Mina Harslett was born in Sydney, Australia, on March 31, 1920, to Roy W. Harslett and Eva May Croad Harslett of Kogorah Bay, Australia.
She graduated from St. George High School for Girls in Kogorah. During World War II, she worked as a telephone operator for the U.S. Armed Forces in Australia and New Guinea. It was there that she met her husband, U.S. Air Force Capt. Edmund T. Coppinger of Scranton, Pa.
After the war, the couple resided in Harrisburg, Pa. Maj. Coppinger (USAF Reserve) died in 1962.
Mrs. Coppinger was elected president of the St. Francis of Assisi Parish Council of Catholic Women and was a member of the Soroptimists.
She set up and opened S&H; Green Stamp Redemption Centers throughout the Mid-Atlantic region and managed redemption centers in Harrisburg and Camp Hill, Pa., until she retired in 1980.
In 1980, Mrs. Coppinger moved to Brookings. She ran the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Shop in the Star of the Sea Catholic Church for several years. She later ran the Information Center at Harris Beach State Park and received a Certificate of Appreciation from the State of Oregon Department of Economic Development and Tourism.
While in Brookings, she also joined the Seniors Hiking Club, traveled extensively, and indulged in her hobbies of gardening, book collecting and knitting. In 1992 she married
Raymond Smock, who died in 2003.
She is survived by her children Janelle M. Coppinger of Chevy Chase, Md., Roy Coppinger of Portland, Elizabeth Coppinger of Seattle, Wash. and stepson, Father Edmond T. Coppinger of Richmond, Calif. She is also survived by grandchildren Lara Coppinger Brown of San Francisco, Calif., and Lyle Coppinger and Erin Coppinger of Portland.
Her ashes will be returned to Australia.
Cremation was under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel.
Tyler Purdue

Airman Tyler Purdue, 23, of Rapid City, S.D., died Sept. 28, 2006, in Rapid City.
He was born in Crescent City, Calif., on Jan. 21, 1983, and was raised in North Bend and Brookings. He graduated from Brookings-Harbor High School in 2001.
He was active in sports during high school in North Bend and Brookings, and had played baseball for the Bruins after transferring to Brookings for his senior year.
Airman Purdue was a member of the National Honor Society at both North Bend and at Brookings-Harbor high schools, and had played in the band while attending high school in North Bend.
Following graduation, he worked at several jobs in Brookings before making the decision to join the U.S. Air Force. In October 2004, he entered basic training at Lackland A.F.B. in San Antonio, Texas. He had also been stationed in Biloxi, Miss., at Keesler A.F.B. and was currently serving as a computer specialist on B-1 bombers at Ellsworth Air Force Base in Rapid City, S.D.
Airman Purdue had a big heart, according to his family, and was kind and generous to others. He loved animals, especially his dog "Brodie." He was a family oriented young man, they said, and made friends easily.
He liked to play sports of all kinds, especially baseball. His favorite teams were the San Francisco Giants and the Oregon State University Beavers. He also enjoyed waterskiing, fishing and hunting.
Survivors include his mother Torrea Haines of Brookings and her companion Mike Hall and his children Amber and Sierra Hall of Portland and Brandi Hall of Grants Pass; father and stepmother Lyle and Stacie Purdue of Coos Bay and her children Jake and Carley, also of Coos Bay; brother and sister-in-law Bryan and Chelsey Purdue of St. Helens and their son Tyson; wife Ashley Purdue of Rapid City; grandparents Marsha and Phil Hicks of Grants Pass, Joan and Dick Purdue of Brookings, Janet and Dale Haines of Mount Shasta, Calif.; and many extended family members.
Graveside services will be at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, at W.J. Ward cemetery in Brookings. A memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. at the Brookings Church of the Nazarene, 1600 Chetco Ave.

Walter Morairty
Obit dated: October 11, 2006
Walter Morairty, 99, of Brookings, died Oct. 9, 2006, at his home, of natural causes.
He was born in Denver, Colo., Aug. 25, 1907.
He owned the Sacramento Garage for approximately 50 years and was a mechanic for most of his working life. Mr. Morairty was a 12 year resident of Brookings.
He loved deer hunting, telling stories, playing the harmonica, square-dancing, and singing and harmonizing with his wife Nellie, better known as Jane.
Mr. Morairty is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Shirley and Richard Craig of Brookings; sister Kathryn Kamble of Sacramento, Calif.; 13 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Nellie; sons Walter "Pat" Morairty and Gerald "Jerry" Morairty.
A memorial will be in Sacramento at a later date.

Linnie Inez Ames

Linnie Inez Ames, 92, of Falls City, died Oct. 6, 2006.
She was born Oct. 7, 1913, in Waldport, to George and Mamie Reynolds Murphy.
Mrs. Ames graduated from Falls City High School.
She married
Charles Ames Feb. 27, 1937, in Stevenson, Wash.
They moved to Brookings in 1950, where Mr. Ames co-owned the South Coast Lumber Co. They returned to Falls City in 1984 for retirement.
Mrs. Ames enjoyed gardening and was a loving mother, her family said. She was a member of the garden club and a long- time member of the Falls City Christian Church.
Survivors include her sons Danny Ames of Central Point, Mick Ames of Turner; sister Louise LeFever of Dallas; brother Leon Murphy of Arizona. Also surviving are three grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her sister Ruth Poe; brother Richard Murphy and in 2001, her husband "Charlie."
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today (Oct. 11) at the Dallas cemetery, 2065 S.W. Fairview Ave., in Dallas.

Lowell Glenn 'Mike' Miller

Lowell Glenn "Mike" Miller, 82, of Ophir, died Aug. 23, 2006, at his home of natural causes.
He was born Feb. 28, 1924, on the Cedar Fork Creek Ranch, near Ophir, to Lawrence Elvin Miller and Jessie Meta Earl Miller.
Mr. Miller lived his entire life in Ophir except for the time he served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He attended Ophir High School and began a long career of logging in the area. He had worked for several loggers in the area as a timber faller and later as a log scaler.
He married
Lillian Doris Burns, March 21, 1958, in Eureka, Calif.
Mr. Miller enjoyed hunting and fishing. During the mid 1970s until the early 1980s, he worked for Curry County as the county predator control trapper. His particularly enjoyed the job he held as a young man when he assisted in a geological survey of the area, and had fond memories of the hiking and camping that was part of the work.
His family said Mr. Miller was a solitary man and possessed a quiet and gentle manner. He loved being outdoors. Having grown up on a ranch, he enjoyed providing for his family and grew huge gardens each year, as well as raising beef and chickens. He was a devoted father and grandfather, they said.
Survivors include his wife Doris, of Ophir; daughters and sons-in-law Kathy and Bill Walker of Gold Beach, Mindy and Lane Walker of Jacksonville, Chrys and Rick Walker of Sams Valley, Margie and Glenn Carpenter of Ophir; daughter-in-law Diana Doyle of Ophir; son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Jo Doyle of Eureka, Mont.; sisters Mearl Brubaker and husband Sam of Crescent City, Calif., Loris Borden of Florence; grandchildren, Kerry Carpenter, Troy Doyle, Melanie Cox, Amber Petersen, Andy, Tristan and Billy Walker. Also surviving are eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his son Bruce Doyle; brother Roland Miller; sisters Beulah Carpenter, Iris Hazelton, Dorothy Thompson and Jessie Large.
A Celebration of Life picnic will be at at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, at the Miller home, 96258 Euchre Creek Road, in Ophir.
