Henry Anthony Schwerkolt
Obit dated: August 24, 2002
Henry Anthony Schwerkolt, 93, died Aug. 20, 2002.
He was born Jan. 9, 1909, in Hawthorne, N.Y.
He served in the armed forces during World War II.
Mr. Schwerkolt moved to Nevada and worked as a dairy and bakery router for many years in Sparks before moving to Reno to work at the Veterans Hospital for eight years.
He was a musician, serving as an organist and pianist at Calvary Baptist and Evangelical Free churches in Reno for 25 years.
After moving to Brookings, he and his wife Jessie became members of Brookings Presbyterian Church in 1976. He was ordained an elder in 1979 and served as the church organist for five years.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years in 1990.
A memorial service will be at Brookings Presbyterian Church Wednesday, Aug. 28, at 1 p.m.

Janie Anderson

An informal memorial service for Janie Andersen is scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29, at Brookings Presbyterian Church, 540 Pacific Ave.

Sidney A. Moss

Sidney A. Moss, died Aug. 21, 2002, in his home in Port Falls, Idaho.
Moss was born Aug. 7, 1921, in Crews, Texas, to Samuel Albert and E. Lizzie Beth Moss.
He married
Mildred Hart Oct. 30, 1952, in Crescent City and moved to Idaho 11 years ago.
Moss served in the U.S. Army and was a laborer in the construction business. He was also a member of the Elks for 25 years in Brookings.
Survivors are his wife, Millie; sons and daughters in law, William and Terrie Moss of Spokane, Wash.; Ron and Ruth Moss of Lewiston, Idaho; Don and Linda Moss of Post Falls; Jeffery and Robin Moss of Post Falls; daughters, Mary Gates of Lynwood, Calif.; Karynne Fleming of Bakersfield, Calif.; brother, Alvin Moss of Bakersfield; sisters, Artie Jo Misner of Bakersfield; Addie Sylvester, Morro Bay, Calif.; Beth Oliviera of San Luis Obispo, Calif.; Maurine Whitener of Colfax, Calif., and Polly Bell, Santa Maria, Calif.
Preceded him in death by sons Joey and George Moss; sister Leta Crain and brother William Clinton Moss.

Private services will be at a later date. English Funeral Chapel, Post Falls, is in charge of the arrangements.
Marian Leach Durrell
Obit dated: October 19, 2002
Marian Leach Durrell, 89, of Brookings, died Oct. 7, 2002, at an adult foster care home of natural causes.
She was born July 24, 1913, in East Bridgewater, Mass., to Charles and Margery Leach. She spent her early years in East Bridgewater, and after schooling she worked in home service and child care in Boston.
She met William G. Durrell and they dated for four years. They were married
in Whitman, Mass., Oct. 17, 1937.
They lived most of their life in Boston where Mr. Durrell worked for Walter Baker Chocolate Factory/ General Foods as a chocolate sampling technician.
Mrs. Durrell spent her time as a homemaker and in the employment of the National Headquarters of the Salvation Army as a cook and lunchroom hostess so her daughter could attend a private school.
After retirement in 1977, they moved to Sacramento, Calif., and in 1978, moved to Brookings along with Linda and her family.
Mrs. Durrell worked and volunteered for 10 years as a teacher's aide at Kalmiopsis Elementary School, where she shared her love for children. She attended Grace Bible Church for 24 years and served with a ladies missionary group. She served as a Salvation Army bell ringer and was active at the Chetco Senior Center.
Mrs. Durrell enjoyed crocheting, crossword puzzles, quiz shows and children.
She is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Bill Eller of Brookings; grandchildren, Kevin and his wife Barbara Eller of Medford; Lynette and husband Jose Hernandez; Jill and husband Julio Cesar Zebadua of Brookings; Nathan and wife Chandra Eller of Medford, and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 63 years who died May 6, and her infant son, William Guy Durrell Jr.
A memorial service will be today (Oct. 19) at Grace Bible Church at 2 p.m. with Pastor Wil Winter officiating. Inurnment will be at W.J. Ward Memorial cemetery at a later date.
Memorials may be donated in Mrs. Durrell's name to the Salvation Army, 409B Hillside Ave., Brookings.
Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel in Brookings.
Stanley Raymond Brown
Obit dated: October 19, 2002
Stanley Raymond Brown, 62, of Grants Pass, died Oct.13, 2002, at his home.
He was born on March 18, 1940, in Casper Wyo. He lived in Empire and moved to Brookings in 1965. He worked for South Coast Lumber Co. for 15 years as a carrier driver. Three weeks ago he moved to Grants Pass.
He loved to work in his rose garden and spend time with his best friend (his dog) Baby.
Survivors include his son Gary Carter of Crescent City and his brother Robert Brown of Charleston.
Services will be at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Southern Oregon Cremation Services.

Edward Frank Tuma
Edward Frank Tuma, 93, Brookings, died May 25, 2002, at his residence.
Mr. Tuma was born June 13, 1908, to Frank and Emma Tuma in Crete, Neb. He married
Grace Williams March 6, 1938.
After 38 years of marriage, Grace died in 1996 and Mr. Tuma moved to Brookings to live with his son and daughter-in-law.
He was a lifetime member of the Olivet Baptist Church in Oklahoma City, Okla., and enjoyed reading the Bible.
He is survived by two sons and their wives, Bill and Donna Tuma of Brookings; and John and Virginia Tuma of Euless, Texas.
He is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Services and burial will be at Rose Hill Burial Park, Oklahoma City.

Florence R. Oppelt
Obit dated: December 21, 2002
Florence R. Oppelt, 89, of Harbor, died, Dec. 16, 2002, at Sutter Coast Hospital in Crescent City of congestive heart failure.
She was born Nov. 29, 1913, in New Prague, Minn., to John and Mary Kubat.
She grew up and graduated from high school in Montgomery, Minn.
She attended college and graduated with a teaching certificate. She taught grades one through eight in rural Minnesota in schools where several grades were taught in the same classroom.
She often talked about driving her 1930 Model A through heavy snow to get to schools heated by coal stoves.
She married
William Scott (Scotty) Oppelt on June 6, 1938, at the Catholic Church in Montgomery. They had been sweethearts since they met in the third grade.
The couple lived in Montgomery until 1941 when they moved to Klamath Falls to take advantage of a job opportunity. When the job didn't turn out as planned they headed back to Minnesota.
After taking a short trip up the Oregon Coast before going back to Montgomery, they decided to stay in Oregon. They lived in Klamath Falls until World War II during which time they worked in the Portland shipyards.
After the war, they returned to Klamath Falls where they bought, remodeled and sold several homes, owned and operated a Mom and Pop hardware store and built and operated a 95-unit apartment complex.
In the early 1980s, they kept a boat and RV in Harbor and spent a lot of time ocean fishing. In 1986, they sold their home and businesses in Klamath Falls, bought property in Harbor and built a home.
Mrs. Oppelt enjoyed her ocean view home and her flowers and yard.
Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Scotty Oppelt of Harbor; daughter and son-in-law, Jeneane Oppelt-Hill and John Hill of Klamath Falls.
She was preceded in death by her daughter Judy Kay in 1976.
In accordance with Mrs. Oppelt's wishes, she will be cremated. A picnic is planned for her family and friends in June at Harris Beach, which was one of her favorite places. The date of the picnic will be announced later.
Mrs. Oppelt requested in lieu of contributions, each person should take a loved one out for a nice dinner in her memory.
Arrangements are under the direction of Wier's Chapel and Crematory, Crescent City.
Jennie Marie Miller
Obit dated: December 21, 2002
Jennie Marie Miller, 91, died, Dec. 11, 2002, in Beaverton.
She was born Feb. 16, 1911, in Luck, Wis., to Ray Riley and Hilda Shoquist Riley.
She married
Howard Miller June 21, 1928.
In 1935 she moved to Klamath Falls. In 1945 she moved to Ashland where she owned and operated Miller's Dairy. Later she worked as a cook at many Ashland restaurants.
She moved to Hillsboro in 1968 to live with her daughter. She worked for several charitable organizations in and around Portland.
Survivors include daughters, Elisabethe Hamilton; Meta Baines Kent; Alice Shupe; brother, Lester Riley; and sister, Hazel Worre.
Also surviving are 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Howard; son, Jack and two brothers.
A private interment was held in Ashland.
