Roy Bowman
Roy Bowman, 89, of Toledo died at home of pancreatic cancer on Dec. 21, 1998.
He was born near Ozone, Ark. on March 6, 1909 to Andy and Josephine Bassinger Bowman. He had several half-brothers and sisters, all deceased. His first wife, Nettie Sprinkles Bowman, died in 1982. He married Elmyra Higgins Bowman in 1985.
He had been a farmer, carpenter, logger, cowboy, railroad fireman and construction worker. He worked for the former C.D. Johnson mill in Toledo and retired as maintenance supervisor of the former Toledo hospital.
He was a member of the Toledo Masonic Lodge and First Baptist Church of Toledo. He enjoyed travel and rock hounding.
Survivors include his wife, Elmyra, of Toledo; a daughter, Edna Eiler of Woodburn; sons Gene Bowman of Myrtle Creek and Jim Bowman of Hubbard; stepdaughters Lois Garland of Puyallup, Wash., June Allen of Bend, and Lorna Wheatley of Corvallis; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Bateman Funeral Home in Newport. Burial will be in Eureka Cemetery in Newport.
Mildred Myers
Mildred Eleanor McMullen Myers, 72, of Waldport died Dec. 21, 1998.
She was born in Mackinaw, Mich. on May 23, 1926 to Lee Frank and Beatrice Rosella Carpenter. She was one of 12 children. She had been a longtime resident of Waldport.
She enjoyed cooking and was known for her homemade pies, cookies, holiday meals, and her sense of humor. She loved to play cards, drink coffee, crochet, and entertain family, and especially enjoyed Christmas.
She was a member of the Waldport Moose Auxiliary.
Survivors include her husband of 11 years, George; children Sharon Smith of Dallas, Ore., Sandra Graham of Portland, Evelyn Smith of Alsea, Brian Baldwin of Waldport, Patty Hunter of Tidewater, Robert McMullen of Portland, and Darlene Smallwood of Tidewater; 23 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husbands Donald E. Baldwin and Robert B. McMullen; and her oldest daughter, Donna Mae Bradshaw.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today (Wednesday) at the First Baptist Church in Waldport, officiated by Reverend Arron Gushwa. Burial will follow at the Yachats Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Bateman Funeral Home.
Ellen Schroeder
Ellen Bertha Schroeder, 79, died at her home in Toledo on Dec. 19, 1998.
She was born in Fraser, Colo. on Oct. 28, 1919 to Charles D. England and Vesta Folmsbee Peterson. She spent the past 56 years in Toledo.
She married Lawrence D. Schroeder in Corvallis on Oct. 13, 1940. He preceded her in death in 1996. Mrs. Schroeder had been a homemaker most of her life.
Mrs. Schroeder was a member of the L.D.S. Church and the Eagles Lodge, and enjoyed many kinds of craft work, including ceramics, reading, tatting, and knitting.
Survivors include her children, Terry Kenning of Los Angeles, Calif., Charles Schroeder of Federal Way, Wash., Carrie Moug of Santa Rosa, Calif., Robin Tuck of Windsor, Calif., Phyllis Handsaker of Coos Bay, Leonard Schroeder of South Beach, Bruce Schroeder of Toledo, and Walter "Sandy" Schroeder of Lake Oswego; a brother, Leonard England of Central Point; sisters Phyllis Schroeder of Medford and Mamie Schroeder of Lancaster, Calif.; 22 grandchildren; and many great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Richard Schroeder; and a sister.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Bateman Funeral Home, with interment to follow in Eureka Cemetery. Bateman Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
John Taylor
John Thomas Taylor, 89, of Portland died Dec. 20, 1998.
He was born in Emmett, Idaho. He was a bus driver for public schools until retirement.
He married Leona Crabtree in June 1932; she preceded him in death in 1987.
Before moving to Portland two years ago, Mr. Taylor lived in Yachats, where he was a member of the Lions and the Yachats Volunteer Fire Department and Ambulance. In Portland, he was a member of Calvary Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include his daughters, Katherine Gonzales of Portland, Sharon Taylor of Seal Rock and Susan Taylor of Eugene; a son, Larry Taylor of Seal Rock; a sister, Evelyn Weeks of Silverton; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Calvary Presbyterian Church in Portland, and burial will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Yachats Cemetery. Remembrances are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
George Tromlitz III
George William Tromlitz III, 79, of Portland and formerly of Toledo, died at a Portland hospital Dec. 19, 1998.
He was born in Portland on Oct. 31, 1919 to George W. II and Etta Glee Turner Tromlitz. He had been a resident of Toledo most of his life.
He married Marjorie Erlic in Santa Monica, Calif. on Aug. 31, 1941. He worked 40 years as a logger and mechanic for C.D. Johnson and Georgia-Pacific. He retired in 1983. He was a charter member of Toledo Elks Lodge #1664.
Survivors include his wife, Marjorie. of Portland; children Ronald E. Tromlitz of St. Helens, Michael A. Tromlitz and Irma Jean Tromlitz of Portland; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Memorial services are planned for a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Bateman Funeral Home.
Mabel Wakefield
Mabel Jane Wakefield, 86, of Corvallis died Dec. 17, 1998 at Good Samaritan Hospital.
She was born in Toledo on Dec. 1, 1912 to Johnny and Kate (Blower) Robertson. She graduated from Toledo High School in 1931 and received her teaching certificate from Oregon Normal School in Monmouth in 1933. She later received her degree from Oregon State in elementary education.
She taught school, first in a one-room school near Elk City, later in Eddyville, Newport and Philomath.
She married Rex W. Wakefield on June 3, 1939. Much of her early marriage was spent at ranger stations with the U.S. Forest Service. She moved with her family to Eugene in 1948, where she resumed her teaching career as a substitute teacher.
When her husband was transferred to the Siuslaw National Forest in 1952 she taught school at Roosevelt, Mountain View, Lincoln and Adams schools in Corvallis.
She enjoyed accompanying her husband in pursuits of hunting, fishing, clamming, and sports events. They hand planted thousands of Douglas fir trees on their properties in Lincoln and Polk counties. She and her husband were selected as Lincoln County Tree Farmers of the Year in 1983. She enjoyed caring for her flower and vegetable gardens and knitting.
Survivors include her daughters, Betty Wakefield Liska of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., and Nancy K. Hiatt of Corvallis; and three granddaughters. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rex Wakefield, in 1994.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday) at Eddyville Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wakefield Memorial Scholarship Fund, Oregon State University (use restricted to the School of Forestry) in care of McHenry Funeral Home, 206 NW Fifth St., Corvallis 97330.
Sylvia Davidson
She was born in Montrose, Iowa on Sept. 29, 1926 to Loran and Helen Beggs VanAusdall. She had been a resident of Newport for the past year.
She married William Davidson in Davenport, Iowa in 1962. He preceded her in death in 1992. For most of her life, she was employed as an accountant. She worked for Hagman's Inc. for many years in Pittsburg, Kansas. She enjoyed sewing and crocheting.
She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Kountz of Newport; grandchildren Lawrence Gormly, Gerald Gormly, and Stephanie Pelletier, all of Las Vegas, Nev.; and four great-grandchildren.
At the decedent's request, no services are planned. Disposition is by cremation, with Bateman Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.
Dwight Barcus
He was born Feb. 13, 1917 in Panora, Iowa to Harlan and Della Barcus, and moved with his family to Fruita, Colo. in 1928. He grew up in that area.
He married Petrea Mogensen on Feb. 6, 1938, and they lived in the Fruita area until 1972, when they moved to Rifle, Colo., because of his work with the Rifle PCA.
After his retirement in 1982, he and his wife spent summers in Newport, where he enjoyed ocean fishing. They made a permanent move to Newport in 1986 and lived there until 1995, when they moved to Portland.
Mr. Barcus had a variety of occupations, among them as co-owner of a small grocery store with his brother, Melvin; work in a slaughter house and meat packing plant; farmer; sheep and cattle rancher; Rifle PCA fieldman; and later its president.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Petrea; daughters and sons-in-law Luthera and Bob Hindman of Oregon City, Delene and Roy Tufly of Dixon, Mont., and Earlynn and Bob Landini of Clifton, Colo.; a son and daughter-in-law, Harlan and Chris Barcus of Gladstone; a foster daughter, Dorothy Russell of Fruita, Colo.; grandchildren Ruby Russell, Kristy Russell Armour, JoAnn Hindman, Gavin Hindman, Darrel Landini, Bradley Landini, Lisa Landini, and Brian Tufly; great-grandchildren Aza Landini and Dillon Young; and brothers Melvin and Lyle, both of Colorado Springs. One son, Darrel, and a grandson, Benji, preceded him in death.
Contributions may be sent to any local hospice group or the church or charity of choice.
A memorial service will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at Sunnyside Little Chapel of the Chimes in Portland.
