Bill C. Baydo
Obit dated: July 27, 2002
Bill C. Baydo, 75, Brookings, died of cancer July 7, 2002, at his home in Brookings.
He was born June 9, 1927, to John Baydo and Marjorie Scott Baydo in Molalla. He attended school in Fall City and Chablis, Wash., and graduated from Oregon Institute of Technology (then OTI).
He married
his wife Opal in Reno, Nev., Sept. 25, 1965.
Mr. Baydo served in the U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He worked in logging in Washington and Oregon and for the Forest Service in Lakeview and Susanville, Calif. He retired from Boyles Drilling Co. as a driller foreman in 1980.
His hobbies were hunting and fishing.
He moved to Brookings in April 1983 from Nevada.
He is survived by his wife; daughters, Kathi Denton and Sheri Wildes; son, Roy Baydo; stepdaughter, Kathy Garren and stepson Tom Butler.
He is also survived by seven grandchildren, six step-grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother.
Arrangements were by Litty Funeral Directors, Brookings Chapel.

Frank Lee Rollins
Obit dated: July 27, 2002
Frank Lee Rollins, 69, Harbor, died July 24, 2002, at his home of natural causes.
He was born June 23, 1933, in New Orleans. He served in the U.S. Army, then the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged in Nov. 1953.
Mr. Rollins was married
to Lola White for 37 years prior to her death in 1987. They raised four sons in Rogue River. He worked at the V.A. Domiciliary in White City until 1984.
He married
Donna Brown in Reno, Nev., in 1987. They moved to Brookings eight years ago.
Mr. Rollins enjoyed boats and ocean fishing.
He is survived by his wife, Donna; sons, Kenneth Wayne Rollins and wife Linda of Rogue River; Frank Cecil Rollins of Ontario; Terry Lee Rollins and wife Rosemary of Washington; James David Rollins and wife, Tamara, Williams; two sisters and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Memorial services will be announced at a later date.

Jon Lawrence Wilson

Jon Lawrence Wilson, 49, Brookings, died July 23, 2002, at his home after a long illness.
He was born Jan. 24, 1953, in Crescent City to Arthur and Emma Wilson. He graduated from Del Norte High School in 1972.
He worked in excavating and was employed with B&B; Excavation. He enjoyed computers, cars and music, and his children and grandchildren.
He was survived by sons; Chris Wilson of McKinleyville, Calif., and Keith Wilson of Crescent City; brothers, Rudy Wilson and his wife Sherry of Crescent City; Ray Wilson of Crescent City; Robert Wilson and wife Gloria of Reno, Nev.; Lewis Wilson of Montgomery, Ark., Joel Wilson and wife Deanna of Rexburg, Idaho; sister, Sue Wilson of Crescent City and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father, and brothers, Jerry and Richard Wilson.
Memorials are suggested to Curry County Home Health and Hospice, 800 Chetco Ave., Brookings, OR 97415.
An inurnment graveside service will be July 29, 2002, at 10 a.m. at the Smith River cemetery.

Lt. Col. William Daniel Johnston Jr.
Obit dated: July 24, 2002
Lt. Col. William Daniel Johnston Jr., 78, died July 9, 2002, in Roseville, Calif., of prostate cancer.
He was born in Cincinnati to Cmdr. William D. and Louise E. Susong Johnston. He grew up in Alabama and Tennessee and attended Georgia Tech in Atlanta in 1941-1942.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and graduated from pilot training as a Second Lieutenant at the age of 19.
After WWII he attended University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and graduated in 1947 with a degree in chemical engineering. He returned to active duty with the U.S. Air Force and served overseas in the Philippines and the Panama Canal Zone.
He flew P-47s and P-51s with the 18th Fighter Wing. He retired as a Lt. Col. from McClellan AFB in Sacramento in 1965 where he was with the 1155th Special Weapons Squadron.
He later worked for Atlas Chemical at the Volunteer Army Ammunition Plant in Tyner, Tenn., for five years before retiring to Siesta Key, Sarasota, Fla. He started two businesses in partnership with his youngest son, W.D. Johnston III, Aqua Serv and Aqua Stainless Fasteners, and retired again in 1986 and moved to Grass Valley, Calif.
He was an active member and past treasurer of the Nevada County Amateur Radio Club.
Mr. Johnston is survived by Jean, his wife of 60 years; brother, J. David C. Johnston, Chattanooga of Tenn.; children, Teri-J.J. Dougan of Brookings; Michael L. Johnston of Citrus Heights, Calif.; William Daniel Johnston III of Grass Valley, Calif.; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Private family services will be Sunday, July 28, in Brookings where his ashes will be scattered at sea.

Otto M. Rinderknecht
Obit dated: July 24, 2002
Otto M. Rinderknecht, 86, died July 17, 2002, in Olympia, Wash.
He was born Sept. 22, 1915, in Philipsburg, Mont.
Mr. Rinderknecht was a 1st Lt. in the Army Air Corps and a B-17 pilot in World War II. He was shot down and made a prisoner of war in Germany.
He was an active member of the Masonic Lodge, a member of Hillah Shrine in Ashland, Past Patron of the Order of Eastern Star, Satellite Chapter 165 in Brookings and a Past Exalted Ruler of Brookings Elk's Lodge 1934.
He is survived by his stepson, Bill Beitman, San Diego; sisters, Ann Byrd and Raymona Rinderknecht, Portland; and sister-in-law, Verna Miller, Denver.
Memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children.
Dale Calvin Corner
Obit dated: July 22, 2002
Dale Calvin Corner, 75, Klamath,Calif., died July 12, 2002, in Albany.
He was born April 28, 1927, in Carter, S.D., to John F. and Florence A. (Robinson) Corner.
He moved to Oregon at the age of 10, settling in the Grand Ronde Valley area. At 16 he began a long career in the logging industry. In 1953 he moved to Brookings and continued logging on the Southern Oregon and Northern California coast.
He married
Patricia Ann Feb. 11, 1967, in Gold Beach.
He and his wife moved to Klamath in the spring of 1978.
Mr. Corner retired from Simpson Lumber-Klamath Division at 74.
He loved his family and the outdoors, camping, water skiing and traveling.
He was a charter member of Elks Lodge 1934.
Survivors include his wife of Klamath; son, David A. Corner of Corvallis; daughters Ronni Jean Marrs of Highland, Calif.; Shirley M. Campagna of Fircrest, Wash.; Bonni D. Distler of Amity.
Also surviving are eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were brothers John and Orien Corner, sisters Gladys Hansen and Lois Wilder, and infant son Patrick Dale Corner.
Memorial services were July 18 at First Presbyterian Church of Dallas. Services are scheduled Sunday, July 21, at Brookings Elks Lodge at 2 p.m. Officiating will be Robert Sloan and the Brookings Elks Lodge.
Memorial contributions may be made to the local hospice organization or to Rogue Valley Neonatal unit, Medford.
Arrangements are under the direction of DeMoss-Durdan Funeral Home and Crematory.
Edward John Wojton
Obit dated: July 22, 2002
Edward John Wojton, 71, Brookings, died July 17, 2002, in his home following a long illness.
He was born Sept. 27, 1930 in Youngstown, Ohio, to Stanley and Josephine Gorski Wojton. He attended parochial school in Ohio. He joined the U.S. Army and served as a private until his honorable discharge in 1949.
He worked at a bakery and a steel mill before becoming a truck driver and owning his own truck. In 1964 he moved to California and drove a truck for the Sheldon Oil Co. for 20 years. He was an active member in the Teamsters. He retired in 1985.
He married
Nancy Ralph and they made their home in Brookings in 1993.
The couple enjoyed cooking and traveling.
Mr. Wojton is survived by his wife; four daughters, Debbie Maready and her husband Edgar of Houston, Texas; Linda Wojton of Fairfield, Calif.; Karen Huntsman of Vacaville, Calif., and Dianna Nuenthal of Tucson, Ariz.; brother, Daniel Wojton and wife Marilyn of Youngstown; sisters, Theresa Susa and husband Albert of Youngstown; Veronica Feret and husband Chester of Boardman, Ohio; aunt, Clara Gorski of Youngstown; and cousin Tom and wife Josephine Constantinovich of Youngstown.
He was also survived by 11 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and many nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Joe and Stanley Wojton and grandson, Matthew Huntsman.
A memorial mass will be celebrated July 31, 2002, at 10 a.m. at St. Cyril and Methodius Parish in Youngstown. A graveside service will be July 23 at 11:30 a.m. at Riverside National cemetery, Riverside, Calif.

Phyllis Wolf
Obit dated: July 22, 2002
Phyllis Wolf, 86, died July 13, 2002, at Curry Good Samaritan Center in Brookings after a lengthy illness.
She was born April 18, 1916, in Wilsall, Mont., and moved to Roseburg where she lived most of her life.
She owned Phyllis' Cafe for many years. She married
Sig Wolf in 1951 in Reno, Nev.
She was known for her flowers and enjoyed bowling. She did volunteer work for the hospital and Friendly Kitchen for the homeless.
Survivors include her husband of Roseburg; son, Tom Jennie and daughter Kathryn Briggs, both of Brookings; sister, Meryle Russo of Roseburg; grandchildren, Michelle Brown of Brookings; Mike Derryberry of Medford. Also surviving are three great-grandchildren and four nieces.
She was preceded in death by sisters, Maxine Daly and Sunnie Foy.
No services are planned.

Cyrus Palmer "Cy" Bennett
Obit dated: July 17, 2002
Cyrus Palmer "Cy" Bennett, 86, Brookings, died last week at his home in Brookings of natural causes.
He was born Jan. 24, 1916, in Short Hills, N.J.
He was a graduate of Millburn High School in Millburn, N.J., the Peddie School in Highstown, N.J., and Wesleyan University (1940) in Middleton, Conn.
In December 1940, he volunteered for military service. He served 18 months in the ground forces, then was transferred to the U.S. Army Air Corps. After graduation from flight training, he joined the 9th Air Force in England and flew 30 combat missions. He was shot down over Germany on May 8, 1944, and remained a prisoner of war until released by the 14th Armored Division April 29, 1945. He remained in the U.S. Air Force reserves until 1955.
He retired in 1974 from Ball Aerospace, where he was employed in Boulder, Colo., as a system director.
He had made his home in Brookings since 1975. In retirement he enjoyed woodcarving and later, oil painting.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Marshall and Cynthia Bennett of Aurora, Colo. Also surviving are eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Memorials may be made to the donor's favorite charity.
A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 21, at Redwood Memorial Chapel, 1020 Fifield, St., Brookings.
