Richard 'Dick' E. Gallup
Obit dated: April 4, 2001
Richard 'Dick' E. Gallup, 81, Harbor, died March 29, 2001, at Curry Good Samaritan Center as a result of stroke complications.
He was born Sept. 7, 1919, in Grantsburg, Wis.
He graduated from high school in Eveleth, Minn., and enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corp when he was 20. He trained at Chanute Field in Rantoul, Ill., and was stationed at Hammer Field in Fresno.
Mr. Gallup met his wife Claire Damiani in Fresno. Their first child was born while he was fighting the North African Campaign of World War II. He received a medical discharge as a disabled veteran.
He and his family lived in Fresno where he worked as a bus driver and bus mechanic. He learned the insurance business and retired from Argonaut Insurance in 1975.
He was an active member and past president of the Fresno Chapter of the Honorable Order of the Blue Goose, a fraternal organization of men and women who work in the property and insurance casualty industry.
He was also president of the Central California Adjustors Association in 1965 and chairman of the Arbitration Committee of Fresno in 1966.
He and his wife moved to Madras in the mid-1970s when she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. She died and he moved to Brookings in the late 1980s.
Mr. Gallup and his former high school sweetheart, Eleanor Hauser, renewed their relationship during the 1992 Eveleth, Minn., Centennial Celebration. They lived for the last nine years in Brookings.
Survivors are companion Ellie Hauser of Brookings; sons and daughter-in-laws Richard and Jane Gallup of Costa Mesa, Calif.; Doug and Sue Gallup of Eugene; sister Doris Rommel of Seattle, Wash.; sister and brother-in-law Phyllis and Melvin Mitchell of Estacada; brother and sister-in-law Jim and Nancy Gallup of Maple Grove, Minn.
Also surviving is his cat Missy of Brookings.
A memorial service will be today (April 4) at 10 a.m. at Litty's Funeral Directors, Brookings Chapel, 517 Railroad St. He will be buried in Madras.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alzheimer's Association, Cascade/Coast Chapter, 1238 Lincoln St., Eugene, OR 97401.
Arrangements are under the direction of Litty's Funeral Directors, Brookings Chapel.
George Cummings
George Cummings, 67, Brookings, died June 9, 2001, in Eureka, Calif.
He was born Nov. 7, 1933, in Richmond, Va.
He grew up in Virginia and Pennsylvania.
He married
Mary Cummings Oct. 24, 1953, in Doylestown, Pa.
Mr. Cummings served for 22 years in the Navy before being honorably discharged in July 1974.
He worked at Perkin-Elmer and retried in 1986. He moved to Brookings in May 1989 from San Jose, Calif.
Mr. Cummings was a past exalted ruled of the Brookings Elks Lodge and a past commander of the American Legion.
Survivors are wife, Mary Cummings of Brookings; son, George Cummings Jr. of Jackson, Calif.; daughter, Geri Hauck of Florence; brother, William Cummings of Cassel, Calif.
Also surviving are numerous nephews, nieces and special friends.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Frank and Dallas Cummings; brother, Frank Cummings, Jr.
A memorial service is planned for June 30 at 1 p.m. at the Brookings Elks Lodge.

Clifford Arthur Rutter
Obit dated: June 15, 2001
Clifford Arthur Rutter, 87, Brookings, died June 7, 2001, at home.
He was born Sept. 28, 1913, in Cove, to William and Ethel (Greenough) Rutter.
He served in the Navy See-Bees during World War II. In 1947, he joined his father and five brothers in Roseburg and Grants Pass in working for CopCo, now Pacific Power and Light.
Mr. Rutter became a line foreman in the transmission department and then retired to Brookings after 35 years.
He enjoyed fishing.
Survivors are his wife, Avagene 'Genie' Rutter; daughters, Sharon Dykeman of Vancouver, Wash.; Rebecca Ferguson of Lake Havasu, Ariz.; sister, Joan Knutson of Glide.
Also surviving are eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
A private interment will be held in Grants Pass at the Hawthorne Memorial.
Harold G. Marz
Obit dated: June 6, 2001
Harold G. Marz, 77, Brookings, died May 30, 2001, at Sutter Coast Hospital in Crescent City of a massive heart attack.
He was born May 31, 1923, in Elizabeth, N.J., to Edward and Marie Marz.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy for three years as an aviation cadet and mechanic during which he was stationed throughout the United States.
After his discharge from the service, he enrolled in Rutgers University, where he met and married
Sally Spiegel. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in geology in 1950.
Following graduation, he was in the Naval Hydrographic Office, then worked two years as an oil well logger for Ellis Laboratories.
Upon moving to California in 1954, he taught for Los Angeles city schools. While teaching, he finished a master's in education from California State University, Northridge in 1964.
In 1978, he retired from the school district and moved to Garberville, Calif., then Eugene and finally Brookings in 1993.
He was a member of the Elks, life member of Veteran's of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans. He enjoyed sharing his knowledge of geology, woodworking and mechanics, officials said.
Survivors include his wife of Brookings; daughters, Lila Marz Harper of Ellensburg, Wash.; Lisa Marz-Reed of Harrisburg, Pa.; brother, Edward Marz of Mansfield, Ohio; sister, Ruth Stumpp of Beacon, N.Y.; grandson, Artemus Harper of Ellensburg; granddaughter, Sara Harper of Ellensburg; nephew, George Stumpp of Beacon; niece, Carol Sneyd of Beacon.
A memorial service is planned for today (June 6) at 2 p.m. at Litty's Brookings Chapel, 517 Railroad St.
Phyllis Horrell
Obit dated: June 1, 2001
Phyllis Horrell, 68, Baker City, died May 20, 2001 in Kuna.
She was born Jan. 11, 1933, in Eugene to Elmer and Thelma Ware.
She grew up in the Willamette Valley. In 1951, she married
Jim Wolfe. Soon after their marriage, they left on a New Tribes mission. She served as a missionary in Brazil for nearly a year.
After serving as missionaries, they had a son and two daughters.
She and her husband were living in Central Oregon in 1977 when her husband died after a logging accident.
In 1979, she met John Horrell. They were married
in 1981. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Brookings where they lived until 1992 when they moved to Henderson, Nev. They lived in Henderson until 1994, when they moved to Baker City, and established their sign painting business.
Mrs. Horrell held a variety of jobs outside of the home from various secretarial jobs to owning her own chicken restaurant to being a cook for the Head Start program.
Survivors are her husband, John Horrell of Baker City; son, Jim R. Wolfe of Chemult; daughters, Kerry A. Sherman of Baker City; Tammy R. Overstreet of Boise, Idaho; sister, Norma Plummer of Salem; step-daughters, Judy Coon of Las Vegas, Nev; Linda Jablonski of Sioux City, Iowa; step-son, Bob Horrell of Texas.
Also surviving are 12 grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her parents.

Alice Casebeer Loughridge
Alice Casebeer Loughridge, 94, Harbor, died June 4, 2002, at a residential care facility following a long illness.
A memorial service is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. today (June 8) at the New Life Community Church, 424 Second St., Crescent City. Pastor Larry Read will officiate.
Ms. Loughridge was born Sept. 5, 1907, in Seattle to Homer and Edith Smith Casebeer. She was raised in Puerto Rico and Southern California, and completed an undergraduate degree in nursing.
She worked as a registered nurse while furthering her education. She earned a master's degree from Columbia University and made contributions to the field of nursing, including founding a school of nursing in Mexico City.
Ms. Loughridge traveled the world extensively and lived in many locations during her lifetime. She taught psychology at the university level in Chicago and Tennessee, and lived for years in San Francisco.
She liked to sail her sailboat and was a past member of a yacht club in San Francisco.
She was a member of St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in Brookings.
Ms. Loughridge is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Kathaleen and Kenneth Manning of Umatilla; niece, Sasha Weaver-Upton and her husband, Earl Upton of Crescent City; two great-nephews, Stephen H. Nash of Sacramento, Calif., and Marcus N. Nash of Vancouver, Wash.; and many friends in Brookings-Harbor.
Arrangements are under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel in Brookings.
Eric D. D'Alcorn
Eric D. D'Alcorn, 91, Brookings, died June 2, 2002, in Gold Beach.
He was born Aug. 7, 1910, in Spalding, England to Mr. and Mrs. Oscar D'Alcorn.
He grew up and went to school in Spalding and married
Mamie Atterbury in Derby, England, Nov. 20, 1944.
He served in the British army from 1941 to 1945.
Mr. D'Alcorn left England in 1946 and lived in Vancouver, British Columbia, and Escondido, Calif., before moving to Brookings in 1977. He worked as a manager at Woolworth's until his retirement in 1977. He was an engraver in Brookings for 15 years.
He is survived by his wife, along with three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are under the direction of Litty Funeral Directors, Brookings Chapel.
Chancey Edward "Ed" Carpenter
Chancey Edward "Ed" Carpenter, 76, Pistol River, died June 1, 2002, in Medford.
A funeral service will be Friday, June 7, at 1 p.m. at Litty Funeral Directors, Brookings Chapel. Interment will follow at Pistol River cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, June 6, from 1 to 4 p.m.
