Mildred Bowers
Mildred Bowers, 84, died at a Roseburg care center on Dec. 24, 1998.
She was born in Salem, Mo. on Sept. 18, 1914 to Philip and Amanda (Noel) Heer. She grew up and attended school in Missouri. She had lived on the Oregon coast and in the Newport area for more than 40 years.
She married Leo Benny Bowers in Newport in 1963. They had lived in the Roseburg area for the past six years.
She enjoyed cooking, dancing, and the outdoors, including fishing, hunting and camping. She was part of the Newport Elks Lodge for 30 years.
Survivors include her children, Caroline M. Monterostelli, Dorothy Schell of Springfield, Robert Schell and Susan L. Brown; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and one son.
A family gathering will be held in Springfield on New Year's Day. Private cremation rites have been held. Inurnment will be in the Brownsville Baptist Cemetery in Brownsville. Wilson's Chapel of the Roses, Roseburg, is in charge of the arrangements.
Alice Foster
Alice May Foster, 89, of Tidewater died at Pacific Communities Hospital in Newport on Dec. 23, 1998.
She was born in Thompson Falls, Mont. on June 24, 1909 to Frank M. and Loretta Wooters Woodard. She had been a resident of Tidewater since 1964.
Her husband, Milton Foster, preceded her in death in 1990. For most of her life, she was a homemaker.
Survivors include her sons, Gerald Foster of Tidewater, Bud Foster of Louisville, Miss., and Carl Foster of Grand Mound, Wash.; a daughter, Barbara Karlstrom of Tidewater; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
At the decedent's request, no services are planned. Disposition is by cremation, with Bateman Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.
Barbara Sweet
Barbara Kay Sweet, 61, of Seal Rock died at her home on Dec. 24, 1998 after a two-year battle with cancer.
She was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. on Sept. 4, 1937 to Paul and Olympia Marie (Rafael) Ten Eyck. She attended school in Michigan. When she was 19, she met and married her husband, Dick Sweet. They moved to his home state of Oregon in 1958 and made their home in Lebanon. In 1966, they moved to their retirement home in Seal Rock.
Mrs. Sweet retired from Gore Elementary School in Lebanon as an administrative assistant, school librarian and general clerk.
She enjoyed craft work, sewing and needlepoint. She was a member of the Lebanon Mennonite Church.
Survivors include her husband, Dick, of Seal Rock; a son, Rick Sweet of Albany; daughters Debbie of Monmouth, Lori of Lebanon and Sherri Godfrey of Albany; her mother, Olympia Ten Eyck of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.; a brother, David Ten Eyck of Southern, Mich.; sisters Judy Vert of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., Paula Ten Eyck of Detroit, Mich. and Joanie Heffner of Cuttstown, Penn.; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
Memorial services were held Tuesday at the Lebanon Mennonite Church, with Pastor Brent Kauffman officiating. Graveside committal services were held Tuesday in Lebanon. A luncheon service followed the memorial service with family and friends. Services are under the direction of McHenry Funeral Home. Howard Hight
Howard Clinton Hight, 90, died at Newport Rehabilitation & Specialty Care Center on Dec. 27, 1998.
He was born in Chickasha, Okla. on March 20, 1908 to William Zechariah and Fannie Thomas Roberson Hight. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. Until his retirement in 1970, he was a mechanic for Amato Brothers in Portland.
He had been a resident of Portland from 1905 to 1987, when he moved to Newport. He was a graduate of Benson High School. His wife, Helen, preceded him in death in 1986.
Survivors include his sisters, Opal Prather of Soldotna, Ark. and Doris Myhren of Newport; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. Bateman Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Jerry Grubbs
Jerry Edward Grubbs, 51, of Missoula, Mont. died Dec. 23, 1998.
He was born in Portland on Jan. 7, 1947 to Clarence and Emma Grubbs. He graduated from Dallas, Ore. in 1965. After attending several Oregon colleges, he moved to Newport, where he lived until he relocated to Missoula, where he lived most of the past 20 years.
Survivors include his wife, Clare; a daughter, Jocelyn, of Missoula; his father, Clarence, of Dallas; his mother, Emma, of Woodburn; a sister, Mary Ann, of Newport; and step-family Lil Grubbs, Carol Hudson of Vancouver, Debra of Corvallis and Mike of Monmouth.
A celebration of his life will be held Saturday in Stevensville, Mont.
Carl Rodli
Carl Henrick Rodli, 71, died in Tacoma, Wash. on Dec. 14, 1998.
He was born in Portland on June 8, 1927 to Conrad and Helga Rodli. He was raised and attended school in Newport, and graduated early in 1944, then went back to play as a post-graduate on the football team for the 1944/45 season. He joined the Navy and was in for approximately 18 months in 1945/46.
In 1950, he graduated from Linfield College in McMinnville. Following college, he spent 20 years in the fishing industry in Alaska. For the past 20 years, he resided in the Bellevue, Wash. area and was a member of the Newport High School Alumni Association for much of that time.
Survivors include his wife, June, of Puyallup, Wash.; sons Steve of Tacoma, Wash., David of Missoula, Mont., Jay of Puyallup, Wash. and Brian of Sausalito, Calif.; daughters Linda Deardorff of Taiwan and Laurie Bhattacharya of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a brother, Kenneth Rodli of Albany; three sisters, Agnes Rodli of Sultan, Wash., Olaug Rodli of Anchorage, Alaska, and Henrietta Halverson of Newport; and 12 grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Dec. 21 in Washington, with Pastor Kenneth Rodli officiating. Committal services were held Dec. 21 at Tahoma National Cemetery.
Marie Keithley
Marie Amelia Keithley, 78, of Tidewater died at Pacific Communities Hospital in Newport on Dec. 22, 1998.
She was born in Swea City, Iowa on Aug. 1, 1920 to Paul L. and Ellen Larsen Malmos. She had been a resident of Tidewater since 1992. She was a member of Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church in Corvallis.
Survivors include her daughters, Claudia Cookson of Tidewater and Margo Lane Wallace of Elko, Nev.; a son, Victor L. Keithley of Applegate, Calif.; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Charles Lucas
Charles Marvin Lucas, 72, of Waldport died at Pacific Communities Hospital in Newport on Dec. 18, 1998.
He was born in Spokane, Wash. on June 21, 1926 to Gilbert and Sarah Bacon Lucas. He was raised in Spokane and lived most of his life there except for a job transfer to Umatilla for a number of years.
He married Ruby Glover in Spokane on April 11, 1968. After 30 years of service with the Union Pacific Railroad, he retired and moved to Waldport.
Mr. Lucas was a former race car driver, polo player and hockey player. He was also a member of the Eagles Aerie #2909 in Hermiston.
Survivors include his wife, Ruby; children Diane Lucas of Caldwell, Idaho; Jack Lucas and Russell Lucas, both of Spokane, and Kelly Lucas of Portland; stepchildren Vonda Waddington, Richard Davis and David Davis, all of Spokane; Sharon Davis, Gary Davis and Barbara Davis, all of Kennewick, Wash., and Bill Davis Jr. of Bismarck, N.D.; brothers Richard F. Lucas of Walla Walla, Wash. and Lawrence Lucas of Spokane; sisters Blanche Lomen, Janene Blimka and Rita French of Clarkston, Wash., Gloria Lowery of Coos Bay, and Suzanne Witter of Spokane; 18 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial service will be held at 2 p.m Monday at Holy Cross Cemetery in Spokane, officiated by Reverend Ted Bradley. Arrangements are under the direction of Bateman Funeral Home of Newport.
