Thomas Cochran

Thomas Wilson Cochran, 80, of Waldport died at Pacific Communities Hospital in Newport on March 1, 1999.
He was born in Eagle Butte, S.D. on Nov. 29, 1918 to Raymond and Nelle Rauch Cochran. He had been a resident of Waldport since 1956.
He married Naomi Wolfe in Waldport on Oct. 22, 1939. From 1940 to 1955, he farmed in Idaho; from 1955 to 1970, he was employed at the Waldport Chevron Station. For three years, he was employed with the State of Oregon as a park ranger at South Beach before transferring to the State Highway Department, where he worked for nine years before retiring in 1979.
In 1973, he was chosen as Oregon State Employee of the Year by the State Employees Association. He was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Waldport.
Survivors include his wife, Naomi, of Waldport; daughters Colleen Nickerson of Waldport, C. Virginia Garretz of Salem and Patrice Baptist of Canyon Country, Calif.; a brother, Phillip Cochran of Hazelton, Idaho; sisters Carol Wright of Waldport and Joan Laur of McCall, Idaho; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Graveside services were held Saturday at Alder Grove Cemetery in Waldport. Bateman Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Betty Kiepke

Betty Mae Kiepke, 71, of Toledo died at Pacific Communities Hospital in Newport on March 3, 1999.
She was born in Rochester, Minn. on Aug. 1, 1927 to Frank and Elsie M. Pye Reick. She married Roland Kiepke in Wemme on Dec. 29, 1968. She had lived in Toledo since 1971. She had been in data processing for 10 years, and worked for Riviera Motors.
Survivors include her husband, Roland Kiepke of Toledo; a son, Michael McClure of Seaside; daughters Charyl Taylor of San Diego, Calif. and Bonnie Bruce of Vancouver, Wash.; a brother, Kenneth Reick of Long Beach, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Memorial services were held Tuesday at Bateman Funeral Home. Bateman Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Lillian Craig

Lillian Craig, 86, of Gresham died March 3, 1999.
She was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada on March 17, 1912 to George and Anna Kromm. She moved to Portland at the age of 7. She and her family moved back to Spokane, where she went to Arlington Grade School and graduated from Hillyard High School in 1931.
She married Boyd Q. "Bud" Craig in Spokane on July 7, 1932. They lived in Spokane until 1974, when they retired to Yachats. While living on the Oregon coast, she enjoyed polishing agates, collecting seashells, attending Bible study and cooking.
She worked as a volunteer almost every day with the Yachats Lions Club and the chamber of commerce. In 1988, she moved to Gresham, where she became a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. She was involved with the Women's Guild and enjoyed working in the kitchen as well as the Zarapheth Kitchen.
Survivors include her son, Charles Craig of Graham, Wash.; a daughter, Clarice Jurdy of Gresham; a brother, Elmer Kromm; a sister, Katherine Reinehardt, both of Spokane, Wash.; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1981.
A Celebration of Life was held Sunday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Gresham. Graveside services were held Tuesday at Spokane Memorial Gardens in Spokane. The family suggests that contributions to the Zarapheth Kitchen, c/o Trinity Lutheran Church in Gresham. Bateman Carroll Funeral Chapel in Gresham is in charge of arrangements.

Marten Petersen

Marten M. Petersen, 80, of Waldport died at a Newport care center on March 1, 1999.
He was born in Detroit, Mich. on July 20, 1918 to Marten M. and Mary C. (Keppeler) Petersen. He grew up in Edgerton, Ohio and worked as a carpenter after graduating from Edgerton High School in 1936.
He joined the Army in March of 1941, and as a sergeant accepted a commission as a second lieutenant in what would become the Army's Medical Service Corps in February 1943. After serving in the Rhineland campaign, hen returned to the United States in January 1946, and was discharged as a captain from the 124th Evacuation Hospital two months later.
He began work in Fort Wayne, Ind., and met and married the former Marian Seidel in Butler, Ind. on Aug. 4, 1948. He joined the county sheriff's office, where he rose to the position of deputy chief.
After 19 years of service, he and his wife retired to Roseburg, along with their good friend and medical doctor, Marjorie Jansch, where they opened an office, with Marian as nurse and Marten as business manager. They retired in 1990, and moved to Waldport in 1994.
He was active in Masons, most recently with the Alsea Bay Lodge, and held membership with Blue Lodge, Shrine, Scottish Rite, and the Provost Marshal Mizpah Temple. He belonged to the Michigan, Indiana and Ohio Law Enforcement Associations, and the American Legion. He liked to volunteer with Whale Watchers, and enjoyed gardening and beach walking.
Survivors include his wife, Marian; a son, Mark Petersen of Fort Wayne, Ind.; a daughter, Marcia Eash of Independence; and grandchildren Rebecca, Sara, Dereck, Emily and Stacy. He was preceded in death by his sister, Marcella Miller, in 1979.
Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at DeMoss-Durdan Garden Chapel, with Chaplain Bev Cook Rupp officiating. Memorial contributions are suggested to the National Institute of Cancer Research, in care of the funeral home at 815 NW Buchanan, Corvallis 97330.

Esther Randall

Esther Ruth Randall, 90, of Portland died in an adult foster care center in Vancouver, Wash. on March 8, 1999.
She was born in Brush Prairie, Wash. on June 12, 1908. She graduated from Walla Walla High School.
She married George Randall in 1925, and he preceded her in death in 1967.
She lived in the Portland area for most of her life, and was employed as a housekeeper in private homes. She was a member of the LDS Church.
Survivors include her daughters, Evelyn Springer of Shelton, Wash. and Naomi Edwards of Siletz; a son, George Randall Jr. of Vancouver, Wash.; a sister, Joyce Richmond of Pasadena, Calif.; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Cherry Park Ward, in Portland. Remembrances are suggested to the Missionary Fund, Cherry Park Ward.

Jerry Decker

Gerald "Jerry" Dale Decker, 54, of Depoe Bay died at Pacific Communities Hospital in Newport on March 15, 1999.
He was born in Bend on Dec. 22, 1944 to Perry Eldon and Verna Mae York Decker. His family moved to Depoe Bay in 1954, and he graduated in 1963 from Taft High School in Lincoln City. He taught for 22 years after receiving his teaching and master's degrees from Oregon College of Education, Monmouth.
He married Margaret J. Rufner in Hillsboro on June 21, 1968 and moved to Salem, where he taught at Parrish Junior High School for eight years. While in Salem, their two sons were born. In 1976, they moved back to Depoe Bay.
Mr. Decker was a language arts teacher with the Lincoln County School District, and taught at Taft High School, Siletz Junior High School and Newport High School. He was teaching at Newport High School at the time of his death.
He was a builder in Lincoln County for eight years. He was a Vietnam veteran and served in the Army for two years.
Mr. Decker had many interests over the years, including family reunions, camping, skiing, book stores, gardening, coaching and gold mining. He was involved with many activities and organizations that helped children, a member of the board and coach for Little League sports, a member of the Depoe Bay Park Committee who assisted with the building of the park, a member of Oregon Coast Council for the Arts, a founder of Neighbors Against Drugs in Depoe Bay, the chairperson for three years of the Depoe Bay Harbor Commission, and a sponsor for Save The Children Fund and St. Labre Indian School.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret, of Depoe Bay; his mother, Verna Decker, of Depoe Bay; sons Thaddeaus Alexander Decker of Portland and Kent Anthony Decker of Eugene; a brother, Gordon Decker of Meridian, Idaho; and sisters Lola Rae Pittman of Libby, Mont., Sharon Eilers of Wasilla, Ark. and Joy Bones of Vancouver, Wash..
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Bateman Funeral Home in Newport. Burial will be in Eureka Cemetery in Newport. The family suggests memorials to Neighbors Against Drugs, c/o Depoe Bay City Hall. Bateman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Benjamin Hoen

Benjamin Zane Hoen, 4, of Yachats died at Doernbecher Children's Hospital in Portland on March 14, 1999.
Ben was born in Florence on March 10, 1995 to Zane W. and Rita R. Larson Hoen. He lived all his life in Yachats.
Survivors include his parents, Zane and Rita; a brother, Trevor Zane; and a sister, Savannah Rose, all of Yachats; paternal grandfather and step-grandmother Ed and Charlene Hoen of Yachats, paternal grandmother Betty Hoen of Yachats, maternal grandmother Mary Larson of Newport; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Memorial services were held Wednesday at Keller Creek Park on the Yachats River. Bateman Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Phyllis Whelan

Phyllis Jane (Giesy) Whelan, 73, of King City died of lung cancer at her home on March 13, 1999.
She was born in Portland on April 23, 1925. She was a descendant of the founders of the Aurora Colony pioneers of 1855, and was a homemaker.
She married Edward Whelan on June 23, 1945. They lived in Newport from 1988 until 1998, when they moved back to Portland.
Survivors include her husband, Edward, of King City; a son, Tom, of Portland; a daughter, Susan, of Portland; and a granddaughter, Julia, of Los Angeles, Calif. She was preceded in death by a son, Stephen, in 1997.
Private services will be held at a later date. Her ashes will be scattered off shore from Yaquina Head by her request. Remembrances are suggested to the Oregon Humane Society or Providence St. Vincent's Hospice.
