Roy H. Campbell
Newberg resident Roy H. Campbell died May 21, 2005. He was 82.
He was born March 9, 1923, to Joseph and Mary Campbell in Pipestone, Minn. The family settled in Buffalo, Minn., where he graduated from high school in 1941 as the president of his class. He took over the family business, Campbell Abstract Company. He enlisted in the Navy during World War II, serving more than three years at Camp Peary, Va., and in Okinawa, Japan. He was active in The Navigators fellowship. He founded Youth For Christ in Buffalo. Following the war, he enrolled in Northwestern College in Minneapolis, graduating in three years.
He married
Merle Houser of Minneapolis in June 1948 in Lebanon. He pastored a Methodist Church in Winthrop, Minn., while finishing his college degree. Following a year at Dallas Theological Seminary in Dallas, Texas, he transferred to Western Conservative Baptist Seminary in Portland. He started serving as a student pastor at First Baptist Church in Monmouth. Earning a divinity degree in 1952, he was called as full-time pastor of First Baptist Church in Monmouth, where he served until 1960. He also taught at Salem Academy and at Judson Baptist College. From 1960 to 1962 he pastored the Pleasant Home Baptist Church in Gresham.
In 1963 he started pastoring for the First Conservative Baptist Church of Roseburg, where he led the congregation until his retirement in December 1985. In retirement he interim pastored nine different congregations in Oregon, following his wife's retirement from the Umpqua Community College English faculty in 1988.
He produced the Sunday morning radio program 'The King's Message' for 19 years, aired on KQEN radio.
He enjoyed woodworking, photography, model trains and travel. During his pastorate in Roseburg he led three Holy Land pilgrimages. He was active in the Rotary clubs in Monmouth, Gresham and Roseburg. He participated in Roseburg Ministerial Association, YMCA, Red Cross, American Cancer Society and the Cancer Treatment Center.
He suffered a stroke in 1996. In January 2004 he moved to the Astor House retirement community in Newberg.
Survivors include: wife Merle of Newberg; sons, Mark of Round Rock, Texas, and Clark of Newberg; daughter Angelique Crown of Danville, Calif.; seven grandchildren; sister Ellen Point of Buffalo and several nieces and nephews.
Private interment and military honors were held June 10 at the Roseburg Veterans cemetery.
Ruth W. Diehl
Newberg resident Ruth W. Diehl died June 6, 2005. She was 91.
She was born Dec. 2, 1913, in Deer Park, Wash. She was raised in Portland. She graduated from Jefferson High School and earned a teaching degree from Cheney Normal School in Washington. She worked as a medical transcriber for Valley Medical. She lived for 25 years in Portland and for nine years in Newberg.
Survivors include: daughters, Eileen Sautner and Kathleen Caselton; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Avamere, 740 N. Foothills Drive, Newberg.
Lloyd G. Rowland
Lifelong Newberg resident Lloyd George Rowland died May 27, 2005. He was 88.
He was born Dec. 10, 1916, to Frank and Mary (Jensen) Rowland in Newberg, where he spent his life. He served in the Army from September 1940 until he was honorably discharged in June 1946 as a sergeant technician with a Good Conduct Medal, the American Defense Service Medal and the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal. He served with the 41st Infantry Sunset Division in the New Guinea Campaign in World War II.
He married
Velma Sullivan in September 1941. She preceded him in death in 1993.
He married
Dorothy Hosford in January 1996. She preceded him in death 33 days later.
Survivors include: daughter Pat Carothers of Salem; stepdaughters, Joyce Anderson of Beaverton and Norma Thompson of Meridian, Idaho; sons David of Camp Verde, Ariz., and Doug of Newberg; stepsons, Dwight Hosford of Meridian and Frank Hosford of Tucson, Ariz.; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three sisters and numerous other relatives.
He was preceded in death by two grandsons, one sister and three brothers.
A service for family was held June 5 at Valley View cemetery in Newberg.
Leslie L. Harkema
Leslie L. Harkema died of cancer June 29, 2005, at his home in Newberg. He was 73.
He was born May 23, 1932, to Geo and Leola (Budgett) Harkema in Lyons County, Iowa. He married
Audrey Calkins in 1950. He worked as a bridge and materials inspector for the Oregon Department of Transportation.
He attended the Church of God. His hobbies included fishing and growing tomatoes.
Survivors include: wife Audrey of Newberg; sons, Michael, Robert, David and Terry; daughters, Janeen and Cindy; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and granddaughter Quinn Harkema.
A private burial was held July 2 at Valley View Memorial Park.

Paul C. Gash
Former Newberg and Dundee resident Paul C. Gash died June 26, 2005, at Willamette Valley Medical Center in McMinnville. He was 63.
He was born Dec. 5, 1941, to Artie and Eleanor (Chaffee) Gash in Fresno, Calif. He grew up and went to school in Clovis, Calif. In 1958 the family moved to Dayton to help on his grandfather's farm. He graduated from Dayton High School, where he was on the football and track teams. He attended George Fox College (now George Fox University).
He later acquired a journeyman electrician license. He worked for Tektronix for 25 years, as well as several different professions. At the time of his death he was employed by Classic Manufacturing Northwest in Wilsonville as a maintenance electrician.
He married
H. Joan Winters on Sept. 10, 1964, in Greenleaf, Idaho. They made their home in Newberg. They later moved to Emmett, Idaho, and after three years returned to Dundee, where they have lived for the past 29 years.
He was a member of the Newberg Nazarene Church as a council member and worked with church youth. In 1982 he moved his family to the Potter's House Christian Fellowship Church of McMinnville, where he was actively involved.
He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, hunting, fishing and attending church.
Survivors include: wife Joan of Dundee; mother Eleanor Pratt of Newberg; daughters, Christal Perez of McMinnville, Marci Landis of Dundee and Sarah Salas-Malinen of McMinnville; sons, Clinton of Sheridan, Matthew of Portland, Jonathan and Joseph of McMinnville, and Abel Ovalle of McMinnville; brothers, Claude and Randel of Fresno, Calif., and Ken of Gladstone; sister Linda Ogles of Newberg; 14 grandchildren; four aunts and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held June 30 at Potter's House Christian Fellowship Church of McMinnville with Pastor Robert Mammen officiating. Committal followed at Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg.
Eunice B. Rice
Former Newberg resident Eunice B. Rice died June 26, 2005, at her home in Grapeview, Wash. She was 70.
She was born Feb. 4, 1935, to Lyle and Stella (Light) Townsend in Portland. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in Portland in 1952.
She married
Lewis Rice in October 1951 in St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Portland. She worked as a clerk for Safeway, Thriftway, Albertson's and Fred Meyer grocery stores.
She enjoyed reading, gardening and bowling. She was a member of several bowling leagues. She was also a member of the Catholic church.
Survivors include: husband Lewis; sons, David of Hillsboro and Michael, Gerald and Patrick, all of Newberg, and John of Olympia, Wash.; daughter, Nancy Hays of Scotts Mills; brother Jack Ellison of Rowlett, Texas; sister Barbara Weatherbee of Sequim, Wash.; 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. July 9 at St. Peter Catholic Church, 2315 N. Main St.

Chesleigh Kinder
Chesleigh 'Dale' Kinder died June 25, 2005, at a Newberg care facility. He was 95.
He was born Feb. 3, 1910, to Glenn and Chessie (Dennis) Kinder in Cleveland, Ind. He was raised in the Bethany Park area of Brooklyn, Ind., and made Brooklyn his home until the 1960s. He attended Brooklyn Grade School and Martinsville High School until the Depression forced him to work. Reelsville High School offered him and his brother Max room and board and education as a scholarship to play basketball. He met Helen Bullerdick at the school and they married
in July 1931.
The couple lived in Brooklyn. He was a member of the Brooklyn Masonic Lodge and the Brooklyn Order of the Eastern Star and the Scottish Rite. He was the charter president of the Brooklyn Lions Club and served on the board of directors of the Brooklyn Methodist Church and the Brooklyn School Board. He worked for Brooklyn Brick, Curtis Wright, Moorman Feed and Sohio Pipe Line.
In the 1960s he and his wife moved to Santa Maria, Calif., where he worked for Rice Rock. He retired in 1976 from the maintenance department of Alan Hancock College. That same year the couple followed their daughters to Oregon and settled in Newberg. He worked for a time as a gatekeeper at the Newberg landfill.
In retirement he kept flower and vegetable gardens at his house. He was a past president of the Homeowners Association at Mountain View Mobile Park and more recently lived at Avamere at Newberg.
Survivors include: wife Helen of Newberg; daughters, Norma Miles of Everett, Wash., and Sharon Springer of Medford; 12 grandchildren in California, Oregon and Washington; 25 great-grandchildren in Nevada, Oregon and Washington; seven great-great-grandchildren and several relatives in Indiana.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Max and Kenneth; daughter Jerelyn Leathers and great-granddaughter Jazmine Snider.
Viewing and visitation hours are 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. today (Saturday) and 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Attrell's Newberg Funeral Chapel, 207 Villa Road. A funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. at the chapel. Committal will follow at 3:45 p.m. at Evergreen Memorial Park in McMinnville.
Jacob and Sophia Anderson
Prematurely born twins Jacob Riley and Sophia Pearl Anderson died June 26, 2005, at a Portland hospital. They were hours old.
They were born that day to Travis and Kerstin (Suing) Anderson in Portland. The family said they were looking forward to having the twins and that they were loved.
Survivors include: parents, Travis and Kerstin Anderson of McMinnville; sister Jeannie Anderson of McMinnville; grandparents, Eric and Jennifer Suing of Newberg and Barry and Karen Anderson of Newport; great-grandparents, Phillip and Mary King of Yachats, Ed and June Dock of Ohio, Violet Deever of Albany and Claire Anderson of Burbank, Calif.; and numerous aunts and uncles.
A private graveside service with interment will be held at Yachats cemetery.
