Leonard E. Weinert
Leonard E. Weinert died April 6, 2005, in Newberg. He was 84.
He was born Oct. 28, 1920, to Carl and Caroline Weinert in southeastern Nebraska. He graduated high school in Falls City, Neb., and from Asbury College in 1945. In 1952 he graduated from the Western Evangelical Seminary with a masters degree of divinity.
He had more than 25 years of pastoral experience with churches in Kentucky, Washington and Oregon. He also worked in revival services in 34 churches and helped in family and youth camps. He lived in Newberg for a total of 30 years, including the past 25.
He served on committees of the Oregon Conference of the Free Methodist Church and was secretary and vice president of the Oregon State Holiness Association. For two years he was on the board of trustees of the Western Evangelical Seminary.
Survivors include: wife Betty of Newberg; son Stephen of Seaside; daughter Carolyn Plath of Lake Oswego; sisters, Alma Ruth Meyer of Falls City, Neb., and Dorothy Greenwood of Colorado Springs, Colo.; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
A private family service will be held April 17.

Robert Alvin Norton
Former Newberg resident Robert Alvin Norton died April 2, 2005, at a Florida hospital. He was 65.
He was born Aug. 28, 1939, to Elmer and Ruby (Tripplet) Norton in Eureka, Calif. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1957. On May 17, 1962, he married
Fannie Haroaway in Dayton. They made their first home in Alameda, Calif., where he was stationed with the Navy. His career in the Navy continued until April 1977. During that time they lived in Adak, Alaska; Bremerton, Wash.; San Diego, Chula Vista and Imperial Beach, Calif.; and Honolulu.
When he retired, he moved to Newberg and for several years he worked as a brick mason. He then went to work as a security officer at Smurfit Newsprint (now SP Newsprint), spending 12 years with the company. He retired in 1996 and shortly after moved to Florida. On April 28, 1996, his wife preceded him in death.
He enjoyed fishing, crabbing and visiting theme parks, including Disney World and Sea World. He was a member of the American Legion in Newberg and the Fleet Reserve Association.
Survivors include: daughters, Jaime Darling of Newberg and Kim Heimbuch of Bremerton; brother Jack of Lake Whales, Fla.; two grandchildren; and seven nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sisters.
A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Willamette National cemetery in Portland with Chaplain Bill Gasser officiating.
Bernard 'Ben' L. Dorothy
Sherwood resident Bernard 'Ben' Lyle Dorothy died April 1, 2005, in Sherwood. He was 88.
He was born Dec. 24, 1916, to Frank and Josie (Shaw) Dorothy in Fairmont, Minn., where he was educated and worked on the family farm. Following school he moved to Los Angeles to work in the aircraft industry. He served in the Army during World War II as a medic. He was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.
He married
Joyce Corum on June 9, 1946, in Nevada. They made their home in Los Angeles, where he returned to the aircraft industry after the war. He worked for 33 years for North American Rockwell, including on the Apollo project. They moved to Oregon in 1989 to be closer to family. They were members of the Calvary Baptist Church in Salem. They moved to Sherwood a few years ago. His wife preceded him in death on Feb. 10, 2005.
He enjoyed traveling, fishing and golfing.
Survivors include: the Rev. Jeff Dorothy of Sherwood; daughter Jann Dorothy of San Rafael, Calif.; sister Alyce Schultz of Minnesota; two grandchildren and one great-grandson.
No formal services will be held. Interment will be private.

Paul D. Fritz
Dundee resident Paul D. Fritz died March 31, 2005, in Portland. He was 78.
He was born Oct. 6, 1926, to Christy and Eva (Stogdel) Fritz in Portland. He grew up in McMinnville and in 1944 graduated from McMinnville High School. He served in the Navy during World War II in the Pacific theater. After the war he moved to McMinnville where he farmed until he went to work for the Farmers Co-op Creamery in McMinnville. He married
Kathryn Reyne in 1947; they divorced in 1972.
On June 17, 1973, he married
Juliana Nydam. They moved to Dundee. In 1980 he started a trucking business and retired in 2002. His wife preceded him in death in 2003.
His hobbies included restoring old cars and antiques, gardening, American and World War II history, classical music and elk hunting. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church in McMinnville and of the Salem Model A Club.
Survivors include: sons, Douglas of Boardman and Stephen of Hot Springs, Calif.; daughters, Luella McKenzie and Katie Baker, both of McMinnville; brother Herb of White, British Columbia, Canada; sister Winona Payne of Newberg; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by brother Warren and sister Dorothy Tallman.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. April 15 at the Presbyterian Church in McMinnville with the Rev. John Ailstock and the Rev. Karen Renner officiating.

Nancy R. Carter
Nancy R. Carter, who had ties to the Newberg business community, died April 3, 2005, in McMinnville. She was 66.
She was born March 16, 1939, to Austin and Myrtle Collins in Sunnyside, Wash. She was raised in Portland. She graduated from Portland State College and in 1996 from the Northwestern School of Law of Lewis and Clark College. She was a member of the Oregon State Bar for 36 years. She married
Finis Carter on April 8, 1967. Her husband owned N.W. Title Company Inc. in Newberg.
Survivors include: husband Finis; son Clayton; daughters, Jane Hess, Anya Pearce, Heather Novotny, Linda Martin and Heidi Novotny; grandsons, George and Wayne Carter; and sisters, Marilyn Fisher and Jackie Sanville.
She enjoyed reading, education and volunteering in the community.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday) at the chapel of Macy and Son Funeral Directors, 135 N. Evans, McMinnville.

Theodore Piller
Newberg resident Theodore Piller died March 31, 2005, at his home. He was 90.
He was born Dec. 7, 1914, to Joseph and Berta (Niedermeier) Piller in Niederlaiern, Germany. He grew up and attended school in Czechoslovakia and worked as a hardwood finisher and painter. On March 4, 1939, he married
Elisabeth Strobl VonSales in Bergreichenstein, Czechoslovakia, and in 1945 they moved to Germany. He was employed at a brick and tile factory. They lived in Germany in Lochhausen until 1954 when they moved with their children to Santa Ana, Calif., where he worked with a cabinet maker as a hardwood finisher and furniture finisher.
He had a part in the manufacture of the first space capsule to go to the moon. He also worked on the Apollo and the space lab projects at McDonald-Douglas. In 1980, he moved to Newberg, where the couple were active members of the St. Peter Catholic Church. On Nov. 30, 2000, his wife preceded him in death. He lived in Newberg until his death.
Survivors include: daughters, Gertraud Gaertner of Cypress Calif., Edith Vida of Newberg and Christl Stohr of Dundee; sister Sofie Stoeckl of Germany; nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.
A rosary is 10 a.m. today (Wednesday) at St. Peter Catholic Church in Newberg with Father Jim Nibler officiating. A funeral mass will follow at 10:30 a.m. Committal was at Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg.

Morgan 'Pete' Moore
Morgan 'Pete' Moore died at his home in McMinnville. He was 62.
He was born Dec. 16, 1942, to Morgan and Tommie (Burns) Moore in San Pablo, Calif. He graduated from Modesto High School and later from Chabot College in Hayward, Calif. He worked in a Simmons Beauty Rest mattress factory for several years prior to entering the Army. He served from 1967 to 1973 in Vietnam. He worked for various companies after his honorable discharge. He married
Janice Hunt on Sept. 12, 1969, in Carson City, Nev.
He moved to Sheridan in 1978. He worked for Fort Hill Lumber Co. until an injury, at which time he returned to school to become an assayer and lab technician. He did this for several years before going to work for Fred Meyer in Newberg, where he worked until his retirement in 1995.
He was a member of the McMinnville First Assembly of God Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping with his grandchildren.
Survivors include: wife Janice of McMinnville; daughters, Lori Williams of Klamath Falls and Stephanie Moore of McMinnville; brothers, Landon of Big Bear, Calif., Charles of Sheridan and Foye of Broadway, N.C.; sisters, LaVerne Winn and (his twin) Clara Garcia, both of Tracy, Calif; and three grandchildren.
A memorial service was held April 4 at the McMinnville First Assembly of God Church with Pastor Marion Ravan officiating.
Larry Sumner
Newberg resident Larry Sumner died March 30, 2005, at his home. He was 62.
He was born June 29, 1942, to Jerry and Aralea (Hacker) Sumner in Hillsboro. He was raised in Newport and graduated from Newport High School, where he played varsity basketball and football and ran on the track team. He married
Joyce and had one daughter. On Oct. 18, 1969, he married
Virginia in Washougal, Wash. He worked for seven years at paper mills in Toledo and Newberg. In 1974 he began a 30-year career in real estate. He served many years as branch manager for Stan Wiley, Gibson Boweles, Coldwell Banker and Oregon Realty. He served on the board of directors for the East Metro Association of Realtors.
He enjoyed camping and fishing at Devil's Lake, visiting the Oregon Coast and attending his children's baseball games and concerts. He attended Portland First Church of the Nazarene for 35 years. He coordinated lighting for church services and special productions.
Survivors include: wife Virginia of Newberg; sons, Matthew of Whitefish, Mont., and Darren of Nashville; daughter Dannette Piertz of Hillsboro; sisters, Judy Mejia of Salem and Peggy Rae of Fountain Hills, Ariz.; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held April 4 at Portland First Church of the Nazarene with Pastor Mark Goodwin officiating. Committal was private at Pike cemetery in Yamhill.

Alice A. Schultz
Former Newberg resident Alice Anna Schultz died March 24, 2005, at a Tualatin hospital. She was 98.
She was born Nov. 18, 1906, to Martin and Bertha (Laatch) Rehwalt in Perham, Minn. She moved with her family to Sherwood at 18 months of age and has since resided there. She attended Middleton Elementary School and graduated from Newberg High School as valedictorian of her class of 1926.
On June 13, 1926, she married
Alvin Schultz in Sherwood. She worked in the fields picking hops, berries, nuts, prunes and beans. She also worked in the Mercantile Grocery Store in Sherwood. In 1948, she opened the Rainbow Restaurant and sold it in 1953. She worked for the Northern Wholesale advertising department for 10 years before retiring. Her husband preceded her in death on Dec. 29, 1986.
She enjoyed gardening and baking bread. She was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church for 97 years.
Survivors include: daughters, Caroline Scuirame and Helen Meissinger, both of Sherwood, and Charlotte Duchow of Kelso, Wash.; 18 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by daughter Mary Hall; three brothers; one sister and one grandson.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today (Saturday) at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sherwood with pastors Vern Sandersfeld and Wayne Duchow officiating. A concluding service will follow at St. Paul Lutheran cemetery in Sherwood.

Joan Ann Duble
Longtime Newberg resident Joan Ann 'Jo' Duble died March 28, 2005. She was 70.
She was born Sept. 5, 1934, to Charles and Gladys Morrill in New Orleans. Her father worked in the U.S. Navy shipyards and relocated the family during World War II to Long Beach, Calif., where she graduated from high school.
In 1951 she married
Jack Dossey in San Diego. They later divorced.
She married
Albert Duble Jr. in 1970 and moved to Oregon the next summer. She worked for Hurford Insurance for 15 years. After, she supported her husband's business as the secretary-treasurer in acoustical engineering.
She enjoyed reading, knitting, the coast, mountains and shopping. She shared her husband's passion for Studebakers and ham radios, as well.
Survivors include: husband Albert; sisters, Azella Anderson of Austin, Texas, and Gladys Heitkemper of Phillips, Wis.; stepchildren, Chuck Duble and Pam Saunders, both of Newberg, Tara Stewart of LaCenter, Wash., and Cindy Duble of Mesa, Ariz.; daughter Denise McCormick of Boise; son Mike Dossey of Alta Loma, Calif.; 19 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Gladys Morrill; brothers, Charles, Birdsall and Harold; and grandson Cameron Dossey.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Newberg First Baptist Church.
