Olive K. Hester
Olive K. Hester died May 21, 2005, at a Newberg care facility. She was 98.
She was born June 21, 1906, to George and Lurie (Stanley) Kendall in Haviland, Kan. Her family moved to Oregon in 1910. She graduated from high school and attended two years of college. In December 1929 she married Dr. Homer Hester, a dentist and one-time mayor of Newberg. In September 1984 her husband preceded her in death.
She was a member of the Newberg Friends Church. She enjoyed crocheting and knitting. She volunteered at local organizations.
Survivors include: daughters, Meredith Fieldhouse of Portland and Joyce Glockler of Alexandria, Va.; brother Woodrow Kendall of Oregon; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Newberg Friends Church with Hubert Thornburg officiating. Committal is private at Friends cemetery.

Carol S. Stahl
Newberg native Carol Sue Stahl of Dayton died of cancer on May 23, 2005, at her mother's home in Newberg. She was 48.
She was born Sept. 13, 1956, to Ronald and Darlene (Young) Peterson in Newberg. She graduated in 1974 from Newberg High School. She married Michael Stahl in June 1986. They later divorced. She held several waitress and production jobs. She worked at Ushio America in Newberg from 1990 until December 2004, when illness forced her to stay home.
Her coworkers at Ushio raised money through bake sales, potlucks and raffles to help her pay for experimental medical treatment in Los Angeles. She told this newspaper in November that her coworkers raised about $3, 000, as well as donated their time off to her.
She enjoyed being with family, as well as camping, rafting, watching Portland Trail Blazer games, thrill rides and casinos.
Survivors include: mother Darlene Peterson of Newberg; daughters, Sharon Stahl of Lafayette and Carly Stahl of Dayton; stepdaughters, Suzanne Waldron of Gleneden Beach, Nichole of Dayton, Brenda Smith of Pleasant Hill and Sarah of Springfield; stepsons, Michael of Dayton and Russell of McMinnville; sisters Linda of Dayton, Nancy McClure of Ridgefield, Wash., and Judy Peterson of Newberg; brother Sam Peterson of Newberg, and many nieces and nephews.
A service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Newberg Christian Church, 2315 Villa Road. Disposition will be by cremation.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or to Kaiser Hospice Care Program at 1410 E. Second St., Newberg, OR 97132.

Robert C. Niehus
St. Paul resident Robert Casper Niehus died May 17, 2005, at Providence Newberg Hospital. He was 82.
He was born Oct. 1, 1922, to Andrew and Anna (Eilers) Niehus on a farm near Gedders, S.D. He attended St. Ann's Catholic School through the eighth grade. He worked on his father's farm until he went to work for a dairyman, milking cows and helping deliver milk in Geddes. At 17, he moved to McMinnville to live with his brother. He helped on his farm and raised hogs for himself. He later worked in the shipyards in Portland.
He enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II and was stationed in Alaska; he received his honorable discharge in March 1946. He married Viola Vincent on Oct. 16, 1947, at St. James Catholic Church in McMinnville.
He had a dairy farm in Dayton until 1962 and sold the herd to purchase a farm north of St. Paul, where he lived until his death. He raised row crops, grains, hay, sheep, beef and pigs. He partnered with his son in operating a dairy.
He was active in the St. Paul Catholic Church parish. He was a past president of the St. Paul Parochial School board and also was a member of the St. Paul District School board. He was a 4-H leader and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He later became a member of St. Peter Catholic Church in Newberg.
He enjoyed spending time with family, fishing, golfing, traveling, building birdhouses, gardening and caring for pets.
Survivors include: wife Viola; sons, Ron of Newberg and John of St. Paul; daughter Cathy Millis of Banks; brothers, Vern of Carlton and Bernard of South Dakota; sisters, Mary Florey and Noreen Bridges, both of South Dakota; nine grandchild and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Louis, Ralph and Joel; and sisters, Georgine and Betty.
A funeral mass was held May 21 at St. Peter Catholic Church in Newberg with Father Jim Nibler officiating. Committal followed at St. James Catholic cemetery in McMinnville.
Memorial contributions may be made to The National Audubon Society in care of Attrell's Newberg Funeral Chapel, 207 Villa Road, Newberg, OR 97132.

Gertrude I. Nix
Gertrude Ione Nix died May 18, 2005, at her home in Sherwood. She was 84.
She was born Feb. 3, 1921, to Orie and Edith (Converse) Haines in Manzinola, Colo. She grew up in the Manzinola area and graduated from high school and business college there. She married Eugene Nix and they lived in several states, including Virginia, before moving to Oregon. In 1960 they moved to Sherwood. Her husband preceded her in death in 1990.
She was a member of the Sherwood Methodist Church; she enjoyed church activities. She also enjoyed cooking, gardening and caring for her home.
Survivors include: sons, Terry of Sherwood, John of Bend, and Robert of Las Angeles; and seven grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by four brothers and sisters.
No services will be held per the family's request.

Howard E. Boothroyd
Newberg resident Howard Eugene Boothroyd died May 18, 2005, at a Newberg care facility. He was 88.
He was born Jan 18, 1917, to Owen and Lilla (Curry) Boothroyd in Lafayette, Ind. He grew up and attended school in Otterbein, Ind., where he graduated high school. He went to the Lafayette Teachers College on a music scholarship and graduated in 1939. He taught for two years and then served the Army from June 1941 to November 1945 during World War II. After, he moved to Los Angeles, where he worked for the post office.
On Dec. 6, 1946, he married Annabel Dutcher in Los Angeles. He worked for the aviation company Swedlow Inc. He earned a California teaching license and was a substitute teacher for two years. In 1964 he began his career with the state of California as a license examiner in the Department of Motor Vehicles and moved to Santa Cruz, Calif. He retired in 1989.
He moved to Newberg. He worked as a handyman at Friendsview Manor for a time. He was a church choir director in California and since coming to Newberg has been a member of Bethel Baptist Church in McMinnville. He was also a member of the California State Employees Association. He was a woodworker and craftsman known for making special recycled note pads with wood frames for Friendsview residents. He enjoyed gardening.
Survivors include: daughter Nancy Hill of Oroville, Wash.; son Howard of Sarasota, Fla.; brother Owen of Winter Haven, Fla.; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Attrell's Newberg Funeral Chapel, 207 Villa Road, with Pastor Herschel Thornburg officiating. Committal is private at Willamette National cemetery in Portland.

Edwin T. Cornwell
Edwin Tryon Cornwell died May 12, 2005, in Chandler, Ariz. He was 90.
He was born Jan. 10, 1915, to Tryon and Marceline (Mayrand) Cornwell in Oregon City. He served in the Navy and attended Oregon State College (now Oregon State University). He worked in the timber and Christmas tree industries. His wife, Iris Snyder, preceded him in death in 1990.
He was an honorary member of the Warm Springs Indian Tribe. He enjoyed hunting and flyfishing.
Survivors include: nephew David James of Dundee; niece Mary Knaupp of Chandler and brother-in-law Kenneth James of Newberg.
He was preceded in death by sister Mary James of Newberg and nephew Stanley James of Orem, Utah.
A service will be held June 13 at Little Chapel of the Chimes in Portland.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Oregon State University School of Education.

Florence M. Lookabill
Newberg resident Florence M. Lookabill died May 16, 2005, at a local care facility. She was 85.
She was born March 15, 1920, to Edward and Anna (Dueth) Lannon in Winner, S.D. On Oct. 2, 1943, she married Lyle Lookabill in Long Beach, Calif. After his discharge from the Marines the couple moved to Cheyenne, Wyo., for a time, then to Nebraska and in 1951 to Southern California. A year later they relocated to Newberg.
She worked as a cook in a cannery for seven years and then for the Newberg School District for four years. In 1973 she retired and the couple moved to Palo Alto, Calif., for five years until they returned to Newberg in 1978. She has since resided here. Her husband preceded her in death in December 2003.
Her family said she was a devoted grandmother. She was a member of the Newberg Boat Club for 20 years. Besides boating, she enjoyed camping and gardening. She was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church in Newberg.
Survivors include: sons, Terry of Portland, Kenneth of Newberg and Larry of Coeur d' Alene, Idaho; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a brother.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Attrell's Newberg Funeral Chapel, 207 Villa Road, with Father Jim Nibler officiating. Committal is private at Evergreen Memorial Park in McMinnville.

Patricia C. Baughman
Patricia Caroline Baughman died May 12, 2005, at Providence Newberg Hospital. She was 82.
She was born March 22, 1923, to Fred and Amber (Baldwin) Griswold in Portland. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1940. In November 1941 she married James Baughman in Seattle. They moved to Tigard, where she has since resided. She worked at Tigard High School for more than 20 years. Her husband preceded her in death in July 1983.
She was a homemaker and mother. She was a member of St. James Episcopal Church in Tigard and taught Sunday school. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution of Tigard and was a leader of Brownie and Girl Scout troops in Tigard. She enjoyed reading, cooking and her family said she had a great sense of humor.
Survivors include: daughter Barbara Yandon of Newberg; a niece; a great-nephew and a great-niece.
She was preceded in death by daughter Patty Joachim and two sisters.
Private committal will be at Crescent Grove cemetery in Tigard.

John Paris
John Paris died May 10, 2005, at his home in Newberg. He was 33.
He was born Jan. 12, 1972, to Jerry and Kris Paris in Honolulu, Hawaii. He moved with his family to southern California. Son of a naval officer, he moved with his family many times before settling in Oregon. He graduated from Tigard High School in 1990. In 1996 he married Kirsten in Tigard. He worked as a paramedic and firefighter for 11 years, both as a volunteer and paid staff member with the Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue, the Sheridan Fire District and the Lake Oswego Fire Department.
He enjoyed hockey, fishing, golf, cars and going for drives with his family, as well as spending time with friends and family.
Survivors include: wife Kirsten; daughter Hannah; son Ethan; mother Kris and sister Shari of Tualatin.
He was preceded in death by his father.
A memorial service was held May 14 at the Hilltop United Methodist Church in Tualatin.

Jerry M. Babcock
Newberg resident Jerry Michael Babcock died May 12, 2005, at a Portland hospital. He was 38.
He was born July 17, 1966, to James Babcock Sr. and Lourdes Rodriguez in San Francisco, Calif. He served in the Army. On July 31, 1994, he married Melinda Taber in Newberg. He worked as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Tigard.
He enjoyed camping, fishing, motorcycling and cooking and his family said he had a good sense of humor and was a devoted husband and father.
Survivors include: wife Melinda of Newberg; father James Babcock of Dundee; mother Lourdes Rodriguez of Dundee; sons, Austin and Zach, both of Newberg; daughter Emma of Newberg; one brother and three sisters.
Viewing and visitation hours are from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Attrell's Newberg Funeral Chapel, 207 Villa Road. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Newberg Christian Church with Pastor David Case officiating. Committal service will be 2 p.m. that day at Willamette National cemetery in Portland.
