Pauline Hartley
Pauline Maurer Hartley, 86, of Portland died Feb. 28, 1999 in Portland.
She was born in Howell Prairie on Feb. 10, 1913 to Wilhelm and Wilhelmina (Warner) Maurer.
She married Claire Hartley in Vancouver, Wash. on Sept. 23, 1938. The couple made their home in Portland. She was a member of the Apostolic Church of Portland.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Suzi Hartley of Oneonta, N.Y.; a daughter, Karla Hartley of Depoe Bay; and a sister, Ruth Issler of Ridgefield, Wash. She was preceded in death by her husband, one sister and one brother.
Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Pacific View Memorial Chapel, 560 SW Fleet Ave., Lincoln City, with Mike Merriman officiating. Memorial contributions have been suggested to North Lincoln Hospice, PO Box 767 Lincoln City 97367. Pacific View Memorial Chapel is serving the family.
Verna Burch
Verna Easther Burch, 86, of Sheridan died Feb. 26, 1999.
She was born in Corvallis on Jan. 11, 1912 to Ed and Maude Smith. She was raised on a farm a few miles south of Corvallis, in a rural area called Irish Bend.
She graduated from nursing school in Portland, where she met and married Ted Reynolds. The couple lived in Coquille, where her husband died. She married Donald Burch in 1940. They moved to Powers, where she was a housewife and part-time school nurse. They later moved to Alpine, where they operated a grocery store.
In 1953, they moved to Milton-Freewater and operated a variety store. Following her husband's death, she continued to operate the store for a few years. She later moved to Wilsonville and went back to nursing at Dammasch State Hospital, and retired in 1974.
She enjoyed working in her rose garden and attending meetings of the Loaves and Fishes and visiting with friends.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Merle Burch of Sheridan; a daughter and son-in-law, Louis and Larry Anderson of Lincoln City; a sister, Muriel Gwillim of Irish Bend; one niece; two nephews; seven grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husbands and her sister, Louise Gochenour.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Pacific View Memorial Chapel, 560 SW Fleet Ave., Lincoln City, with Rev. Larry Rohlfing officiating. Private interment will follow at Twin Oaks Cemetery in Corvallis. Pacific View Memorial Chapel is serving the family.
Alva "Al" Percell
Alva "Al" E. Percell, 84, of Lincoln City died Feb. 25, 1999 in his home.
He was born in St. Paul, Neb. on May 11, 1914 to Henry "Fred" and Elva Mae (Hood) Percell. He grew up in Nebraska, although the entire family would travel to the Willamette Valley to work in lumber camps during his teen-age years.
He married the former Fern Ruth-Ann Dittman in Nebraska in 1933, and they moved to the mid-Willamette Valley to work.
The couple divorced, and he later married Lillian Tucker. They purchased and operated a tavern in Tygh Valley for more than 10 years, then sold it and bought and operated another tavern, "The Rumpus Room," in Portland. After nearly two decades, they retired to Seal Rock.
He was a member of the Eagles and Elks lodges, and enjoyed fishing.
Survivors include his wife, Lillian Percell of Lincoln City; sons Floyd Percell of Cottage Grove, Richard Percell of Pensacola, Fla., Raymond Percell of Elmira, Don Tucker of Seal Rock, Alvin Tucker of Marysville, Wash., Merl Tucker of Salem, Roy Tucker of Sweet Home and Leon Tucker of Newport; daughters Gloria Arre of Eugene and Lavonna Waldon of Salem; brothers Frederick and Lloyd Percell of Sutherlin; a sister, Verna Mae Gardner of Huntsville, Texas; 36 grandchildren; 63 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by brothers Harold, Charles and Wyatt Percell.
A private family gathering in his memory will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Cancer Society, in care of DeMoss-Durdan Garden Chapel, 815 NW Buchanan, Corvallis 97330.
Raymond Schirmer
Raymond Ray Schirmer, 79, of Lebanon died at Good Samaritan Hospital in Corvallis on March 2, 1999.
He was born in Yaquina on March 8, 1919 to Frank and Nettie Huntsucker Schirmer. He had been a resident of the Toledo/Newport area all his life until moving to Lebanon six years ago.
He married Velma Bates in Aberdeen, Wash. on March 8, 1974. He had worked for a sawmill in the Five Rivers area for several years, then was the owner/operator of the Mobil Gas Station in Newport until his retirement in 1985. He was a member of the Toledo and Newport Eagles.
Survivors include his wife, Velma, of Lebanon; daughters Joyce Nelson of Independence, Roberta Woods of Gladstone, and Kathy Hedine of Milton-Freewater; sons Kevin R. Schirmer of Albany and Wesley A. Schirmer of Lebanon; a brother, John Schirmer of Toledo; sister, Evelyn Freeman of South Beach; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Services were held March 5 at Bateman Funeral Home in Newport. Interment was in Toledo Cemetery, Toledo. Bateman Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Betty Sibley
Betty Jane Sibley, 65, of Sweet Home died at the Twin Oaks Care Center in Sweet Home on March 10, 1999.
She was born in Everett, Wash. on Dec. 28, 1933 to George and Georgia Brewer Coudare. She married Herbert Burdette Sibley on May 4, 1950 in Washington. They moved to Portland, where they lived for many years. They then moved to Prineville, where they lived for 20 years, then to California for five years. They moved to Tigard, Newport, Elk City and Pendleton before moving to Sweet Home, where they lived several times.
Mrs. Sibley was a member and active in the American Legion and the Eagles Lodge. She enjoyed crocheting and knitting.
Survivors include her husband, Herbert, of Sweet Home; a sister, Cleda Banes of LaPine; and brothers Gary Dalton of Reedsport and Chip Dalton of Sweet Home.
Her created remains will be scattered privately. The family suggests memorial contributions to Sweet Home American Legion Post #133. The Workman and Steckly Funeral Chapel is handling the arrangements.
Leland Haman
Leland Carlton Haman, 79, of Portland died at the Adventist Care Center in Portland on March 8, 1999.
He was born in Brookings, S.D. on March 19, 1919 to Petra Haman. He married Maxine Fisher in Brookings, S.D. on June 17, 1939. The moved to Portland in 1942, and he worked for Pacific Chain until 1945.
Later in 1945, he joined the fishing industry out of Depoe Bay on his first fishing vessel, The Florence. He them moved his family to Hoquiam, Wash. in 1951 and later purchased the fishing vessel Seaside, from which he fished the Washington and Oregon coasts. He then purchased the fishing vessel We Three, before moving his family to Santa Rosa, Calif. in 1959.
In 1962. he moved the family back to Portland and continued to fish the West Coast with his last boat, the Tomahawk, out of the ports of Garibaldi, Newport, Brookings and Charleston. He was one of three fishermen to bring the first delivered load of salmon to sell at Brookings in October 1958.
He sold his boat and retired in 1982. While retired, he enjoyed building and repairing clocks. He was a member of the Central Church of Christ of Portland.
Survivors include his daughters Charlene Vore of Waldport, and Judith Magee and Beverly Henry, both of Portland; a son, Gerald Haman of Portland; a sister, Genevieve Vona of Portland; brothers Merle Haman of Portland and Donald Haman of Hillsboro; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Central Church of Christ, 5231 SE Stark, Portland. Cremation will be held at a later date off the Oregon coast. Remembrances are suggested to a charity of choice.
Don Sheffield
Don R. Sheffield, 79, of Port Orford died at his home on March 6, 1999.
He was born in Newport on Dec. 17, 1919. He had moved to Port Orford in 1962 from Corvallis.
He had worked as a heavy machine operator until his retirement and was a Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his sons, Roger Sheffield of Port Orford, Charles Sheffield of Monmouth, and David Sheffield of Langlois; a step-son, John Belcher of Port Orford; a brother, Bob Sheffield of Portland; and four grandchildren.
At his request, no formal services will be conducted. Scantlin's Gold Mortuary Chapel performed the inurnment.
Agnas Thomas
Agnas Catherine Thomas, 96, of Lincoln City died March 5, 1999.
She was born in Spokane, Wash. on Sept. 28, 1902 to Michael and Ingeborg Anderson.
She was a member of the Elder Abode of Lincoln City.
Survivors include her daughter, Merry Ann Blanchard of Lincoln City; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Lincoln City Assembly of God Church, 1715 NE 19th St., Lincoln City. Contributions are suggested to the Elder Abode or Women in Ministry of Lincoln City Assembly of God Church, both of Lincoln City.
