Doreen D. Tautfest
Former Newberg resident Doreen Delores Tautfest died Jan. 21, 2004, at a Brawley, Calif., hospital. She was 64.
She was born July 27, 1939, to William and Esther (Knoell) Billeter in Dixon, Neb. Her family moved to Oregon, living in Dallas and Sheridan before settling in Newberg in 1951. She graduated from Newberg High School of 1957. She worked for a short time in Salem for State Farm Insurance. She married
Wayne Tautfest on May 9, 1959, in Newberg. They made Newark, Calif., their home. She worked at American Can Co. in the San Francisco area. In 1963 they returned to Newberg, where she worked at Allen Machinery as a computer operator for 29 years. Her last move was to La Pine.
She was active with Eastern Star and enjoyed her grandchildren and traveling.
Survivors include: husband Wayne of La Pine; sons, Donald of Tigard and Casey of Dundee; daughter Terri Hopes of Portland; sisters, Dorothy Phipps of Salem and Maryln Bennett of Gladstone; and five grandchildren.
A funeral service was held Wednesday in Newberg with Pastor Steve Estrem officiating. A concluding service followed at Newberg Friends cemetery.

Metta A. Everest
Metta Aileen Everest died Jan. 19, 2004, at her Newberg home. She was 87.
She was born April 21, 1916, to Charles and Metta (Morris) Reed in Burns. She was raised on a hay ranch outside of Burns, which is now part of the Malheur Bird Reserve. She graduated from high school in Burns, then attended George Fox University. She married
Glenn Everest on Nov. 13, 1937, in Newberg. They made their home in Portland and later Tigard. He preceded her in death in May 1997.
She was a member of the Reedwood Friends Church.
Survivors include: son Joe of Orland, Calif.; daughter Diana Smith of Sandy; sisters, Marjorie Higgins of Anacortes, Wash., and Rayberta Ray of Louisville, Ky.; grandchildren, Kari VanNatta, Ryan Everest, and Jason and Blake Smith; and great-grandchildren, Anthony and Joey.
A funeral service was held Saturday in Newberg. A concluding service and vault interment followed a Newberg Friends cemetery.
Lillian M. Wozniak
Lillian Martha Wozniak of Sherwood died Jan. 21, 2004. She was 77.
She was born June 2, 1926, to Harry and Clara (Holstein) Goedel on a small farm in Wadena, Minn., in the midst of the Great Depression. When her father died, the farm was lost and the family moved to Oregon in search of better times. She helped in the family restaurant in Sherwood, where she attended high school and graduated as class salutatorian. She married
Stephen Wozniak at the end of the war in November 1945 in Sherwood. He preceded her in death in 1986.
Survivors include: sons, Steven of Newberg, John of Tigard and Edward of Sherwood; daughter Lori Carson of Sherwood; sister Velma Spath of Renton, Wash.; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by brothers Gilbert and Harry, and sister Margot.
A funeral service was held Sunday in Sherwood. Committal followed at St. Paul Lutheran cemetery.

Esther H. Miller
Esther Henrietta Miller died Jan. 25, 2004, at a Newberg care facility. She was 85.
She was born Sept. 4, 1918, to William and Gertrude (Sevier) Hicinbothem in Oregon City. She moved to Stevenson, Wash., where she received her early education. She moved to the Newberg area and married
Robert Orman Miller on March 15, 1937, in Stevenson, Wash. They moved in 1957 to Pendleton, returning to Newberg in 1965. He preceded her in death in October 2001.
Survivors include: sons, Carl and Jack Miller, both of Dundee;daughters, Beverly Turpen of Newberg, Earlene Futter of Dundee, Susan Wilkins of Newberg and Jill Miller of Newberg; 18 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren and 20 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sisters.
A graveside service was held Tuesday in Newberg.
Erasmo G. Barrera
Erasmo Richard Garza Barrera of Newberg died from complications of diabetes on Jan. 17, 2004, at Providence Newberg Hospital. He was 66.
He was born April 10, 1937, to Enrique and Anastacia (Garza) Barrera in Asherton, Texas. He moved to the Newberg area at a young age. A union member, he worked in construction throughout Oregon and Washington. He married
Sylvia Holman on Oct. 4, 1954, in Carrizo Springs, Texas. They made their home in Newberg in 1955. She preceded him in death in May 2000. He was a part of several large construction projects, including a water treatment plant in Pasco, Wash., a stadium at Stanford University, and also on Oregon Health and Sciences University.
He enjoyed the outdoors, namely the Oregon Coast. He enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, crabbing and clamming. His family said he was a devoted father who enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Survivors include: sons, Philip, Erasmo Jr., Michael, Tracy and Kelly, all of Newberg; daughter Linda Farrell of Poway, Calif.; sister Olivia Martinez of St. Paul; brothers, Leonard of Ohio, Louie of Portland, Eloy Barrera of Las Vegas, Edward of St. Paul, Enrique of Aurora, Juan of Gervais, Rick of St. Paul and David of Sherwood; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; 31 nieces and nephews and 43 great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter and his parents.
A funeral service was held Thursday in Newberg at Attrells Newberg Chapel with pastors Ralph Burkett and Eloy Barrera officiating. Committal followed at Valley View Memorial Park.

Arthur Cole
Arthur Cole of Sherwood died Jan. 18, 2004, at a Portland hospital. He was 87.
He was born Dec. 12, 1916, to Charles and Elizabeth (Raitz) Cole in Port Angeles, Wash. He moved to Portland at a young age, attending schools in North Portland and graduating from Jefferson High School in 1932. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corp and worked in the wholesale candy business. He enlisted in the Marines in 1942 and served during World War II, where he was injured. He returned to Portland and started Arthur Cole Candy, which is still being operated by the family. He married
Lorraine Harvey in September 1948 in Sherwood, where they made their home and lived for 42 years.
He enjoyed camping, fishing, boating and local casinos. His family said he was a devoted father and grandfather and a great storyteller.
Survivors include: sons, Walter of Portland and Jim of Sherwood; daughter Elizabeth Karleskint of Portland; grandchildren, Robert Cole, Patricia Miller, Wendy Baughman and Steven Cole; eight great-grandchildren and a nephew.
He was preceded in death by sisters, Lucille and Corrine.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today (Saturday) at Attrells Newberg Chapel with Pastor Ken Vanden Hoek officiating. Committal is private at Willamette National cemetery.

Frances C. White
Frances Carey White of Woodburn died Jan. 15, 2004. She was 91.
She was born May 7, 1912, in Portland. She graduated from Lincoln High School. She worked as an invoice clerk for M and M Lumber Co. in Portland before moving in 1950 to Tigard, where she owned and operated a Mode-O-Day dress shop. She married
William in 1937. He preceded her in death in 1988.
Survivors include: daughter Cheryl Weber; son Bill; five grandchildren and 10 grandchildren.

Agnes A. Cooper
Agnes Amelia Cooper died Jan. 14, 2004, at a Portland hospital. She was 99.
She was born Feb. 6, 1904, to Petrus and Amelia (Anderson) Lundquist in Lindsborg, Kan. She moved with her family to the Sherwood area, started school in nearby Cipole and finished high school in Portland. After graduating from Girls Polytechnic, she trained and became a Registered Nurse.
She worked as a nurse for the Red Cross, various hospitals and did private nursing care. She also worked in service for to the Blood Bank, traveling throughout Oregon, including some state prisons, to help with blood donations. She married
Milford Cooper in 1928. They lived in Yakima, Hood River and Marshfield before settling in Portland in 1937. He preceded her in death on March 28, 1968.
She was active at Woodland Park Chapel. She enjoyed teaching Sunday school crafts and making special items for children. For many years she provided the floral arrangements for her church using flowers from her garden.
Survivors include: daughter Betty McCoy of Fremont, Calif.; sister Rose Schnell of Portland; grandchildren, Terry and Judy McCoy; and great-grandchildren, Matthew and Logan McCoy
Preceding her in death are sister Evelyn; brothers Harold, Leroy and Melvin; and grandson Randy McCoy.
A funeral service was held Saturday at the Rose City cemetery Chapel in Portland with Pastor Arnold Motz officiating. Interment followed at Rose City cemetery in Portland.

James W. McAdams
James Woodrow McAdams of Newberg died Jan. 15, 2004, in his home. He was 77.
He was born June 1, 1926, to Ted and Mary McAdams in Sherman County, Kan. He attended Newberg High School and served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. His work included management positions for Cornet and Albertson stores; owner/manager of Bowl-A-Way Inc., a nine-lane bowling alley in Newberg; lineman construction of high voltage transmission lines and as a journeyman lineman for PGE and PP&L. He returned to Newberg in 2001 to be near family and friends.
He played Santa Claus for kids in Clatsop County. He had a jovial manner and was interested in the people and events around him, his family said.
Survivors include: daughters, Sherrie Bell and Kathie McAdams; sisters, Ruth Jackson and Frances Svendsen; and brothers, Lloyd, George, Harry and John.
He was preceded in death by wife, Winifred, in February 1993; and sister Stella Ring.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Jan. 25 at Newberg Free Methodist Church.
Florence L. Lienard
Former Newberg resident Florence Lee Lienard died Jan. 10, 2004, in McMinnville. She was 101.
She was born June 3, 1902, to George and Nettie (Cooke) Lee in Cincinnati, Ohio. She moved with her family in 1906 to Newberg, where she graduated from high school. She graduated from Pacific College (now George Fox University) and at the time of her death was the oldest living of its alumni. She taught elementary school in Carlton for two years.
She married
C. Floyd Lienard on May 31, 1927, in Newberg. They moved to Tacoma and later to Ridgefield, Wash., where she was a substitute teacher until 1949. Her husband preceded her in death in April 1960.
She relocated to Portland in 1960 and worked for the Portland Public Schools as an elementary school secretary. From 1971 to 1998 she moved all over Oregon, including a six-year stay in Newberg, and finally settled in McMinnville.
She was involved in the church, including her membership in the Presbyterian Ladies Group and serving as a district officer while attending the Presbyterian Church. A great storyteller to her grand- and great-grandchildren, she was family oriented, her family said. She was an avid reader and enjoyed crossword puzzles. She opened her home to exchange teachers and doctors from Japan for many years.
Survivors include: son George of Shelton, Wash.; daughters, Edith Dudley of Dayton and Ruth Heiser of Boise; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were brothers Charles, Walter, Arthur and Harold, and sisters Louisa and Ruth Lee.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. today (Saturday) in the Dayton Christian Church with Pastor Kyle French officiating. Private Committal will be at Riverview cemetery in Portland.

William R. Ellis
William Ralph Ellis died Jan. 8, 2003, in Newberg. He was 56.
He was born Nov. 9, 1947, to Ralph and Audrey (Dillon) Ellis in San Francisco, where he received his early education. He graduated from El Camino High School in 1965. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1966 and served in Germany for two years. Upon his return in 1968, he operated his own leather trade, making leather products for the next five years.
He survived an attack while he was the operator of a cab, as well as a motorcycle accident. He worked as a counselor for 12 years, operating his own counseling business, New Options, for five years.
He was a devoted father and grandfather and a wonderful storyteller with a great sense of humor, his family said. He attended Joyful Servant Lutheran Church in Newberg. He enjoyed NASCAR racing, was an airplane pilot and a skydiver who complete 15 parachute jumps.
Survivors include: son Joseph Cowles of San Ramon, Calif.; daughter Sandra Smiley of Castro Valley, Calif.; brother Stephen of South San Francisco; sisters, Lee Emmett of Pleasanton, Calif., Linda Bomben of San Jose, Calif., and Leslie Fochetti of Redwood City, Calif.; two grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephew.
A memorial service was held Wednesday in Newberg.
