Mary Martin
Mary Elizabeth Martin, 81, of Coos Bay died of natural causes related to a stroke on Jan. 16, 1999.
She was born in Meadowview, Va. on Feb. 24, 1917 to William and Cora Widener. She moved to Myrtle Point in 1937. She also lived in Coquille, where she worked at Smith Wood Products, which later became Georgia-Pacific. For a short time, she lived in California. She married Beryl O. Martin in Crescent City, Calif. on March 23, 1954.
Mrs. Martin was a 50-year member of the Coquille Eagles Auxiliary. She enjoyed homemaking and collecting antique glassware.
Survivors include her husband, Beryl Martin of Coos Bay; daughters and sons-in-law Elsie Green of Coos Bay, Lee Morgan of Coos Bay, Louise Tyler of Enumclaw, Wash., Micki and Jack Walker of Swiss Home, Sherry and Mike Cobine of Dallas and Jeannine and Oscar Olson of North Bend; sisters Martha Woodard of Georgia, and Lucy and Ada McVey of Virginia; a brother, Earnest Widener of Virginia; a granddaughter, Chris Orchard of Newport; and numerous other grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and five brothers.
Funeral services were held at the Coos Bay Chapel in Coos Bay. The family suggests memorial contributions to the South Coast Animal League, PO Box 1232, Coos Bay 97420.
Norma Lisi
Norma Beatrice Lisi, 74, of Newport died at Newport Rehabilitation and Specialty Care on Feb. 10, 1999.
She was born in Portland on June 28, 1924 to Walter and Ina Cramer Lundstrom. She married Dan Lisi in Portland on Feb. 14, 1954. She was a 1942 graduate of Eugene High School, and had moved to Eugene from Portland at age 9. She moved to Newport in 1954.
For several years, she was employed with Newport Sport Fishing in its charter office. She enjoyed having coffee every day at Mo's Annex.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Karen and John Norton of Newport; sons Mike and Brad Lisi, both of Newport; and grandchildren Kari Wallace and Jacob Lisi, both of Newport.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Yachats Cemetery. Bateman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Bolette "Betty" Russell
Bolette "Betty" Russell, 70, of Waldport died of extensive internal complications at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Eugene on Feb. 12, 1999.
She was born in Detroit, Mich. on May 19, 1928 to Barbara and Ethan Grant. She married Philip Russell in Cottage Grove on Sept. 9, 1947.
She lived in Seattle, Wash. in 1947 and '48; Great Lakes, Ill. in 1948 and 1949 through 1955; Newport, R.I. in 1948-49; Bremerton, Wash. in 1955-56; San Diego, Calif. from 1956 to 1962; Lompoc, Calif. from 1962 to 1964; Camarillo, Calif. from 1964-1984; and Waldport from 1984 until her death.
Mrs. Russell graduated from Marysville High School in 1946. Her career was as a real estate salesperson and later manager of the largest real estate office in Ventura County, Calif. She was a member of the Waldport Planning Commission for several years and chaired the commission for a time. She was a member of the South Lincoln Apartments at the time of her death.
Survivors include her husband, Philip Russell of Waldport; a daughter, Jane Douglas of North Hills, Calif.; a sister, Kaye Peck of Marysville, Calif.; grandchildren Gina Erickson, Jon Rust, Kim Staback and Ted Rust; and a great-grandson, Zackary Erickson. She was preceded in death by her son, Theodore, in 1979; and a brother, Ethan, in 1998.
No funeral service is planned, but a commemoration will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday in the South Lincoln Apartments (Sa-Da-Munn Apartments) meeting room. Light refreshments will be served. The family requests no flowers. Memorial donation can be made to the American Cancer Society.
David Montgomery
David Roger Montgomery, 60, of Lincoln City died at Bacon Foster Care Home in Lincoln City on Feb. 12, 1999.
He was born in Tacoma, Wash. on Dec. 20, 1938 to Maxwell and Ruth Peterson Montgomery. He had been a resident of Lincoln City for the past five years. For 15 years, prior to moving to Lincoln City, he was the business manager of the Narrows Tavern in Glide. He was a member of the Elks in Roseburg.
Survivors include his daughter, Marjorie Millard of Waldport; a son, Max Montgomery of Albany; a brother, Bob Montgomery of Bandon; and three grandchildren.
At the decedent's request, no services are planned. Disposition is by cremation, with Bateman Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.
Virginia Ashpole
Virginia Rae Ashpole, 61, of Newport died at Pacific Communities Hospital in Newport on Feb. 13, 1999.
She was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on April 17, 1937 to Garland and Ruth Kohl Blood. She had been a resident of Newport for the past 11 years.
She married Elston "Bud" Ashpole in Nashua, Iowa on Aug. 24, 1957. For most of her life, she was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Bud; daughters Julie Anne Golimowski of Newport and Amber Rae Ashpole of Waldport; a brother, Jeri Hall of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and two grandchildren.
At the decedent's request, no services are planned. Disposition is by cremation, with Bateman Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.
K. Lenor Werth
K. Lenor Eve Werth, 79, of Newport died at Pacific Communities Hospital in Newport on Feb. 9, 1999.
She was born in Vancouver, Wash. on Nov. 23, 1919. She lived in the Portland area for most of her life, and in Newport for the past four years. She was a music composer.
Survivors include her daughter, Susan Brog of Newport; granddaughters and grandsons-in-law Laura and Trey O'Neal of Jackson, Miss. and Lisa and Trevor Spires of Albany; and two great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Newport. Disposition is by cremation. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the St. Stephen's homeless fund.
Brian Eggman
Brian Marsh Eggman, 41, of Orient, Wash. died of natural causes at his home on Feb. 11, 1999.
He was born in Portland on March 25, 1957 to Frank and Donna Eggman.
He grew up and lived most of his life in Newport, where he logged, was a commercial fisherman, and was a member of the National Guard.
He moved to Orient, Wash. with his family in 1993 and enjoyed living in the mountains.
He enjoyed nature.
Survivors include his companion, Nina Jackson of Orient, Wash.; his parents, Donna and Frank Eggman of Newport; sons Daniel, 17, and Jared, 16; step-children Jessica and Nick, all of Orient, Wash.; and sisters Cathy Gesch of Sandy and Stacy Fischer of Newport.
A memorial service and celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the American Legion Hall in Newport.
George Cox
George Albert Cox, 86, of Waldport died at his home on Feb. 22, 1999.
He was born in Duluth, Minn. on March 3, 1912 to Albert and Ruth Amelia Cobo Cox.
He spent most of his life in southern California, where he was an industrial machinery sales representative for the Givens Machinery Company. He was also a professional guitarist. In the 1930s, he and three of his friends, known as the "Hollywood Playboys" band, performed for many years at the Townhouse Zebra Room in Los Angeles. During that time, he met singer Betty Burck, and married her in Colorado Springs, Colo. on Oct. 22, 1939, a marriage that lasted almost 60 years.
They made their home in Palos Verdes, Calif. before moving to Waldport in 1971.
Mr. Cox enjoyed woodworking and wood carving. He was an avid fisherman.
Survivors include his wife, Betty; a son and daughter-in-law, Lawrence Albert and Bonnie Cox of Simi, Calif.; a daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Gary Lee Bills of Parker, Colo.; and grandchildren Bonnie Borden Bills and Eric Lee Bills of Colorado.
At his request, no services will take place. The family suggests memorial contributions to the Waldport Boosters Club. Bateman Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
