E. Muriel Sullivan
E. Muriel Sullivan died Jan. 30, 2003, at a Newberg care facility. She was 90.
She was born Aug. 28, 1912, in Chesaw, Wash., to Herbert and Elizabeth (Binning) Aynsley. She moved with her family to Okanogan, Wash., then to the Newberg, St. Paul and Dayton areas. She graduated from St. Paul High School in the 1930s, then worked on a farm doing household work and caring for the children.
On May 30, 1939, she married Muret Sullivan in Newberg, where they have lived and raised their children. She assisted with the operation of the familys turkey farm for more than 20 years, raising more than 30, 000 turkeys.
She was a lifelong member of Newberg Christian Church and was involved in the activities of the church. She enjoyed her family, cooking and gardening. She was also involved in the Fernwood Elementary School.
Survivors include: son Ron of Newberg; daughter Sharon Fleenor of Newberg; four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by husband, Muret, in April 1974, and by three brothers and two sisters.
Chapel viewing and visitation hours are 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Sunday and 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Monday, at Attrells Newberg Chapel. A graveside service with interment will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg with Pastor David Case officiating.

Marian A. Rak
Marian Almira Rak died March 20, 2003, at St. Elizabeths Hospital in Baker City, after a brief illness. She was 77.
She was born July 31, 1925, to William and Edith McClain in Hood River. She was raised and educated there and then attended Willamette University for three years, majoring in social work. In 1948, she married John Rak of Salem. They settled in Newberg in 1950, where she lived until illness forced her to move near her daughter, Betty, in Baker City. She lived in the Sunnycrest area for many years, moving back to town when her son, Patrick, died in 1985.
She was active in her church, sang in the choir for many years and always helped in the kitchen. In 1998, she was Interfaith Volunteer Caregiver of the Year.
Survivors include: daughter Elizabeth Berry of Sumpter; sister Marcia Stone of Albuquerque; and numerous nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents, three siblings, son Patrick and ex-husband John.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Newberg.

Anna Mae B. Mountain
Anna Mae B. Mountain of Newberg died March 21, 2003, at Providence Newberg Hospital. She was 83.
She was born Dec. 29, 1919, to John and Viola (Hettinger) Moline, Sr. in Burley, Idaho. She attended schools in Burley and Boise, Idaho, moving with her family to Portland where she graduated from high school in 1937. She then attended and graduated from Marylhurst School of Business graduating in 1940. In 1943, she moved to San Diego, Calif., then returned to the Vanport area of Portland in March of 1945, and lived there until the Vanport flood when she moved to Southeast Portland.
On Jan. 14, 1967, she married William Mountain in Portland where they made their home. She worked as an office manager/bookkeeper in the trucking business for many years. In 1968, the couple moved to Newberg where she owned and operated Newberg Tax Service, and was a CPA. She sold the business and became semi-retired in 1993. She started another bookkeeping service for a few local businesses and operated it for nine years before finally retiring.
She was an active member of St. Peter Catholic Church in Newberg and a past member of Newberg Chamber of Commerce and the American Businesswomen. She also attended Sherwood Elks as an Elkit. She enjoyed the beach, traveling, sewing and spending time with her friends.
Survivors include: son, Craig Steadman of Tigard; brother John of Lisbon, N.D.; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and 11 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by husband, William, in October of 1994.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in St. Peter Catholic Church, Newberg with Father Gregory Gage officiating. Committal is private at Willamette National cemetery in Portland. An additional memorial service will be held on at 11 a.m. May 3 at the Sherwood Elks Lodge #2342 in Sherwood. Arrangements are in the care of Attrells Newberg Funeral Chapel.

Fredie L. Burnham
Fredie L. Burnham died March 21, 2003, at Providence Newberg Hospital. She was 82.
She was born Oct. 21, 1920, to John and Nancy (Williams) Cooper in Pickerins, La. Her mother died when she was an infant and she was raised in a Masonic home. She attended school in Louisiana and graduated from high school there. She then moved to Houston and attended college.
On Sept. 1, 1943, she joined the U.S. Air Force and served until Feb. 28, 1948, when she received an honorable discharge. In 1947, she married Donald Burnham in Houston, and they made their home in Texas for 14 years. They spent four years in Alaska, three years in Montana, and five years in South Dakota, settling in Newberg in 1966. She enjoyed camping, hunting and fishing, spending a great amount of time fishing in Alaska.
Survivors include: husband Donald of Newberg; sons, Thomas and John both of Newberg; brother Willis of Houston; sister Merlene Finuf of Zwolle, La., and Irma Patterson of Beaumont, Texas; five grandchildren; and four great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two of her children.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. March 27, in Attrells Newberg Chapel, with Pastor Greg Selander officiating. Committal is private. Arrangements are in the care of Attrells Newberg Funeral Chapel.

James R. Bartlett
James R. Bob Bartlett of Newberg died March 18, 2003, at his home. He was 69.
He was born Oct. 1, 1933, to James and Julia (Traverso) Bartlett in Los Angeles. He grew up and attended eighth-grade in the Bay Area at the St. Joseph Military Academy. He moved to Soyia, Calif., and graduated from Fort Fortunia High School. He attended Humboldt State University. In 1963, he moved to Tigard where he worked for the Pettybone Mercury Corporation in Tualatin, then the Tualatin Valley Water District in Aloha until he retired in 1997.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and working with guns and metal machinery. He coached Little League childrens sports. He was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church and family members said he will be remembered as one who was always willing and ready to help anyone in need.
Survivors include: wife Mary; sons, Thomas and Mark, all of Newberg and Eddy of Aloha; and daughter Julie Bartlett of Tigard.
A Memorial Mass was held Friday in St. Peter Catholic Church in Newberg with Father Gregory Gage officiating. Committal was private in Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter Catholic Church building fund or a charity of ones choice in care of Attrells Newberg Chapel, 207 Villa Road, Newberg, OR 97132.

Bernard W. Koch
Bernard Wayne Koch died March 13, 2003, at a King City care facility. He was 85.
He was born March 17, 1917, to Elmer and Gladys (Bowen) Koch in Richfield, Neb. He moved with his family to Lakeside, Neb., where he attended school and graduated from high school. He started working on a ranch and on Sept. 23, 1937, married Doris McFall in Cheyenne, Wyo.
In 1940, the couple came to Newberg and he worked in construction for many years. He later attended real estate school and became a broker while in Newberg. In 1972, the couple moved to Redmond where they lived until he retired.
They came to Beaverton in 1987, where they lived until two years ago when he moved to a King City care facility. He enjoyed reading, woodcrafts and hunting.
Survivors include: wife Doris of Tigard; sons, Jerry of Redmond and Kerry of Las Vegas; daughter Cheryl Pariser of Rancho Mirage, Calif.; sister Veda Parton of Las Vegas; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was held Monday in Attrells Newberg Chapel with Pastor Don Fivecoat officiating. A concluding service was held at Noble cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to The American Cancer Society or the American Diabetes Foundation in care of Attrells Newberg Chapel, 207 N. Villa Road, Newberg, Oregon 97132.

Donald L. Kinney
Donald L. Kinney died Feb. 8, 2003, in Indio, Calif. He was 75.
He was born Oct. 21, 1927, to Jack and Charlotte (Pawelski) Kinney. He grew up in Newberg and attended Newberg schools. He served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Otus, USS Rollette and the USS Buckley and received a World War II medal, American Area Campaign medal and Asiatic Pacific Campaign medal. He was honorably discharged in 1947. After the service he worked for Portland General Electric for several years and enjoyed spending his winters in Indio and golfing.
Survivors include: daughter Malia Gentry; sisters, Barbara Bailey, Virginia Dvorak and Tobi Young; companion Marilyn Twenge and granddaughter Rondell Gentry. He was preceded in death by wife, Mary, and son Rick.
At his request no services were held. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.

Edward H. Bischof
Edward Henry Bischof died March 14, 2003, at a Wilsonville care facility. He was 97.
He was born Nov. 19, 1905, to Edward and Johana (Weileman) Bischof in San Francisco.
He moved with his parents to Portland after the 1906 earthquake. In 1920, the family moved to a farm between Sherwood and Wilsonville. On Feb. 1, 1933, he married Edith Amacher. In 1935, he went to work for General Mills, retiring in 1965 when the Portland plant closed. He continued working on his sons farm until he was 91. Family members said he became a good carpenter and enjoyed building and making things.
Survivors include: son Donald of Sherwood; daughter Sharon Lund of Wilsonville and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by son, David, in 1977, and wife, Edith, in 1991.
Chapel viewing and visitation hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today (Wednesday) and 8 a.m. to the service time on Thursday. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday in Attrells Sherwood Chapel, with Pastor Steve Berry officiating. Committal will follow at Pleasant View cemetery in Sherwood.

Larry L. LaBounty
Larry Loran LaBounty died March 10, 2003, at a Portland hospital. He was 70.
He was born May 6, 1932, in Tacoma to Mose and Bertha (Anderson) LaBounty. He grew up and went to school in Tacoma, attending Lincoln and Stadium high schools, where he graduated in 1952. He was a star athlete in several sports. After his graduation he was drafted by the New York Rangers hockey team, but signed as a professional athlete with the Chicago Cubs baseball organization. He was a professional pitcher for the Visalia Cubs and the Stockton Ports.
On March 28, 1953, he married Myreta Bowman of Visalia, Calif., and they made their home in California. He was drafted into the Army in November 1953 and served in the Special Services Division. In November 1955 he was honorably discharged and the couple made their home in Visalia, where he worked in the family business.
In 1965, the couple moved to Moses Lake, Wash., where he was the baseball coach for Big Bend College. In 1977 the couple moved to Newberg and he was a baseball coach at George Fox College (now George Fox University). He served as a coach for an Athletes in Action overseas baseball team in 1981. He owned and operated Larrys Christmas Trees in Newberg for several years and was a licensed general contractor working in Alaska and Oregon.
The couple contributed to schools, missions and family organizations. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and the outdoors. He also enjoyed sports, especially college football, hockey and baseball. According to his family, his highest devotion was his walk with Jesus Christ.
Survivors include: wife Myreta of Dayton; sons, Larry of Carlton, Michael of Klamath Falls and David of Puyallup, Wash.; daughter Michelle Kubes of Tigard; sisters, Violet Butler of Gig Harbor, Wash., Yvonne Vonnie Riley of Tacoma and Jacque Cook of Seattle and 11 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by sister, Evelyn Porco.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in Attrells Newberg Chapel with Pastor Shaun McNay officiating. A private family committal service with vault interment will be held at Willamette National cemetery in Portland.
Memorial contributions may be made to Billy Graham Crusades in care of Attrells Newberg Chapel, 207 Villa Road, Newberg, Oregon 97132.

Rudolph D. Leffler
Rudolph Donald Leffler died March 12, 2003, at Providence Newberg Hospital. He was 95.
He was born to Otto and Anna (Gaertner) Leffler on Feb. 22, 1908, in Newberg.
He grew up and received his early education in Newberg, attending Lakeview Elementary School and graduating from Newberg High School. He continued his education at George Fox University and the University of Oregon.
On Oct. 8, 1939, he married Marjorie Tinnerstet of Tillamook and the couple made their home for the next 45 years in the West Chehalem Valley. He was a lifelong farmer and logger. For 37 years he was Newberg Rural Fire District Board chairman and was on the West Chehalem No. 10 School Board for numerous years. He was a private pilot in the 1940s and 1950s and was a member of the Flying Farmers of America. He was a member of the Elks Lodge of McMinnville and Zion Lutheran Church in Newberg.
He enjoyed growing Bartlett pears, nurturing a large garden to share with others, and spending time with family and friends.
Survivors include: daughter Susan Hughes of Sherwood; sons, Richard of Tigard and Donald of Newberg; brother Ernie of Tigard; two granddaughters and two great-grandsons. He was preceded in death by wife, Marjorie, in 1994, one brother and four sisters.
Chapel viewing and visitation hours are 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. today (Saturday), 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Sunday and 8 a.m. to the service time on Monday. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday in Attrells Newberg Chapel with the Rev. Norm Olson officiating. Private interment will be at Noble Pioneer cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Newberg Volunteer Firefighters Association in care of Steve Comfort, 414 E. Second St., Newberg, Oregon 97132. Donations are to be used for rescue equipment.

Valorie G. Friend
Valorie Gene Friend died March 10, 2003, at her Newberg home. She was 47.
She was born Nov. 11, 1955, in Eugene to Lawrence and Oramay (Gore) Friend. At age 3 she moved with her family to Madras, where she attended elementary school and graduated from Madras High School. She moved to Hermiston, then to Portland and finally to Newberg in 1987, where she has since resided.
She made sweatshirts, T-shirts and handbags with custom designs to sell to residents who traveled to Newberg Senior Center. She enjoyed flowers, boating, being in the sun, children and family members said she enjoyed teaching children arts and crafts, math and reading. She was a member of Chehalem Valley Baptist Church in Newberg. According to her family, she was an independent spirit and a loving and giving person always willing to help.
Survivors include: life partner Casey Healey of Newberg; daughter Debbie Healey of Newberg; son Richard of Springfield, Mo.; brothers, Mickey of Fair Oaks, Calif., Roy of Madras, Larry of Drain and Warren of McMinnville; grandchild Scott Friend of Springfield, Mo.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. today (Saturday) in Chehalem Valley Baptist Church with Pastor Bruce Sloan officiating. Private Committal will be at Ashwood cemetery.

Billie J. Lozada
Billie Jean Lozada died March 10, 2003, at her Newberg home. She was 78.
She was born Nov. 14, 1924, in Hailey, Idaho, to William and Edith (Powers) Kneebone. At the age of 3, she moved with her family to Long Beach, Calif., where she received her early education at local schools. On Sept. 10, 1945, she married Jess Lozada in Twin Falls, Idaho, where they made their home for the next two years. Then they moved to the San Diego - National City area of California. In 1948 the couple moved to the Scholls area, then back to California for a short time before returning to Scholls in 1955. The couple made their home in Newberg in 1968, where they have since resided.
She worked for three years at GAF (Viewmaster) in Beaverton as a shipping clerk. In the 1960s, she served on the Altar Society and was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Sherwood; she was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church in Newberg. She was the past president of the Groner Ladies Club in Scholls in the late 1950s.
She enjoyed fishing, gardening, cooking, wildlife and her pet dogs and birds. She was instrumental in preserving watershed and wildlife lands in the Breitenbush area and family members said she helped raise her grandchildren.
Survivors include: husband Jess of Newberg; son Randy of San Jose, Calif.; daughter Terry Lozada-Peterson of Beaverton; numerous nieces and nephews; 11 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by sons, Everett and Donald, daughter Carla Lozada, and one sister.
The Recitation of the Rosary was held Thursday at Attrells Newberg Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday in St. Peters Catholic Church with Father Gregory Gage officiating. A concluding service followed at Mountainside cemetery in Scholls.
