Karen L. Smith
Karen L. Smith of Hillsboro died April 16, 2002, while vacationing at her home in Nehalem. She was 54.
She was born May 28, 1947, in Portland to Archie and Stella (Roley) Davies. She was raised and educated in Eugene, having graduated from Eugene High School in 1965. Following high school, she attended business school in Salem.
On May 6, 1978, she married
Roman Smith in Hillsboro. The couple then made their home in the Hillsboro community. She worked as a real estate agent for many years and last worked for the ReMax Equity Group in Hillsboro. Her interests included fishing and golfing.
Survivors include: husband Roman of Hillsboro; father Archie Davies of Eugene; daughters, Kristi Diebley of Singapore, China, Valerie Bryant of Newberg and Stephanie Braukman of Forest Grove; brother Ron Davies of Spanaway, Wash; sister Janice Kane of Houston; five grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by mother, Stella, in 1995.
A funeral service was held Saturday at the Forest Grove Memorial Chapel with the Rev. C. Eugene Sabin officiating. Private interment was held at Forest View cemetery in Forest Grove.

Howard P. Pettengill
Howard Paul Pettengill of Newberg died April 13, 2002, at Providence Newberg Hospital. He was 47.
He was born Dec. 12, 1954, in Newberg, to Howard and Florence (Doree) Pettengill. He served in the U.S. Army from March of 1995 till his honorable discharge in November 1997. A longtime resident of Newberg, he worked for The Oregonian as a route sales distributor.
Survivors include: friend Darrol Swonger of Newberg. He was preceded in death by his father, Howard, in 1968 and mother, Florence, in 1996.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today (Saturday) in Attrells Newberg Chapel with Chaplain William Larson officiating. Private interment will be held at Riverview Abbey Mausoleum in Portland, where his parents are interred.
Leo R. Case
Leo R. Case of Newberg died April 17, 2002, at home. He was 63.
He was born Feb. 9, 1939, in Emporia, Kan., to Charles and Iva Mae (Viles) Case. He attended school in Kansas and Arkansas. In 1954, he came to Newberg where he met Doris McBride; they were married
March 26, 1959. They moved to Seattle where he worked for Boeing Aviation and Durrel Manufacturing. In 1968, they returned to Newberg where they have since resided. He worked at Publishers Paper (now SP Newsprint), retiring in 1995. The couple had a small farm and custom cut hay. He enjoyed being with family, golfing, traveling and being outdoors.
Survivors include: sons, David and Mark of Newberg; daughter Susan McMullin of Dallas; seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by wife, Doris, in January 1994.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today (Saturday) at Newberg Christian Church with Pastor David Case officiating. Private Committal will be held at Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg.

Lidia I. Martinez
Lidia Irene Martinez of Dundee died April 16, 2002, at Good Samaritan Medical Center in Portland. She was 27.
She was born on Oct. 29, 1974, in McMinnville to Lionel and Maria (Torres) Martinez. She was raised and educated in the McMinnville and Newberg areas. She lived in Lafayette from 1974 until 1978, before moving to Dundee.
She worked as an assembler at the Mid-Valley Workshop for the last four years. She enjoyed watching movies, dancing, singing and loved to read. According to her family she was also a good cyclist.
Survivors include: parents, Maria and Lionel of Dundee; brother Jesus of Dundee; sister Sofia of Encenada, Mexico; grandparents Lidia and Teodulo of Lafayette. She was preceded in death by brother, Grabil.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. today (Saturday) at the Chapel of Macy and Son, 135 N. Evans, McMinnville. Officiants will be elders Antonio Pizano and Jose Perez of the Jehovahs Witness Kingdom Hall. Interment will be held at St. James Catholic cemetery in McMinnville.
Berneice Guedon
Berneice Guedon of Newberg died April 12. She was 93.
She was born July 9, 1908, in Lebam, Wash., to Thomas and Alice (Faubion) Taylor. She attended elementary and high school in Raymond, Wash. There she met Noel Guedon. They were married
July 2, 1927, and made their home in Coos Bay for a short time before moving to Tillamook. From there they moved to Raymond until coming to Newberg until 1943.
She worked for West Coast Telephone as an operator, retiring in 1973. Her interests were traveling, but mainly playing bridge. She was a member of the Newberg First United Methodist Church as well as a member of the PEO (Elks Club) and volunteered by working at the Newberg Hospital Thrift Shop.
Survivors include: son Noel of Newberg; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held Monday at Menlo cemetery in Raymond.

Steven M. Ropkins
Steven Mitchell Ropkins of Salem died of cancer on April 11, 2002. He was 46.
He was born Sept. 1, 1955, in Moses Lake, Wash. He served in the Air Force and worked in shipping and receiving at Ernst Hardware for 11 years alongside his wife, father-in-law and brothers-in-law in the irrigation business. He enjoyed music and played in the local music scene in the 1970s and 1980s. He also enjoyed golf, traveling and animals. He had lived in Salem since the age of 3.
Survivors include: wife Jill Ropkins of Salem; mother Francine Howard of Salem; father Phillip of Warrenton; brother Jay of Cornelius; sister Christie Bravo of Salem; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Gilbert.
A gathering was held Tuesday at The Tack Room at the St. Paul Rodeo grounds.

Ralph E. Chapman
Ralph Ellsworth Chapman of Newberg died April 11, 2002. He was 86.
He was born Jan. 26, 1916, in Roundup, Mont., to Albert and Nellie Chapman. His family moved from Montana to the Spokane area where he attended school through high school. Upon graduation, he moved to Portland to attend the Portland Bible Institute (now Cascade College). There he met Marie Ellis. They were married
Nov. 19, 1941, and lived in Portland for a number of years after their marriage.
After the birth of their daughter Linnea, they felt the call to be involved in foreign mission work. As members of the Oregon Yearly Meeting of Friends, they were sent by the Friends Mission Board to Bolivia in South America. Most of their ministry was spent in and around La Paz and Lake Titicaca in the Andes Mountains. He worked with the national church in evangelism, education through a residential Bible school, church planting, tent meetings and many hours of traveling on hazardous roads in Bolivia.
Upon their return to Portland in 1959, he began working at the newly-formed Barclay Press, then located in Portland. In 1962, the family moved to Newberg, where Barclay Press had moved. They have lived in Newberg ever since.
He continued working for Barclay Press and the Friends Church in several capacities until his retirement. He worked with the mission board to establish Friends Missionary Literature Service. He created, translated, published and promoted missionary literature for both Spanish and Amayra languages. Most of these materials are still being used in Bolivian and Peruvian churches today.
He was a leader at Newberg Friends Church and did hours of work with community service organizations. The couple moved to Friendsview Manor in 1988. According to his family, he had a subtle sense of humor, could fix anything and had a love for his family.
Survivors include: wife Marie of Newberg; daughters Linnea Stahlnecker of Carlton and Margaret Hadley of Fountain Hills, Ariz.; son Wayne of Garibaldi; sisters, Dorothy VanSlyke of Spokane and Evelyn Cogo of Seattle; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by brother, Alfred Chapman, and sister, Erma Duffey.

Joshua Maher
Joshua Maher died April 5, 2002, at a Tualatin hospital after living one hour and 30 minutes.
He was born to James and Brooke (Langridge) Maher. His long-awaited birth was saddened by his physical problems, family members said.
Survivors include: parents, James and Brooke Maher of Portland; brother Elijah; sister Faithe; grandparents Karen Quanstrom and Gary Kirkendall, Russ Langridge and John Maher; great-grandparents, Robert and Noreen Quanstrom, Joan Daily and Marge Langridge.
A funeral service was held Thursday in Attrells Newberg Chapel with Pastor Gary Schuknecht of the Canby Evangelical Church officiating. Concluding service was held at Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg.
Wilma E. Mansfield
Wilma E. Mansfield of Newberg died April 5, 2002. She was 72.
She was born June 7, 1929, in Dayton to Edward and Hattie (Smith) Lefley. She was raised and attended school in Grand Island near Dayton. She worked at a float plant and made rafts for the armed forces during World War II. living in Newberg ever since. On Sept. 2, 1949, she married
James Mansfield in Vancouver, Wash. She enjoyed gardening and sewing, as well as being with her family.
Survivors include: daughters, Marilynn Lehmann of Dundee, Michelle Mathis of Newberg and Becky Philpott of Dundee; son Craig Mansfield of Newberg; sisters, Dorothy Hines and Peggy Kovach, both of Newberg; brother Wayne of Prineville; special friend Shirley Welch of Dundee; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by husband, James, in 2000, brother, William Berger, and sister, Pearl Montage.
A private family service will be held. Interment will be at Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery in McMinnville.

Delmer G. Wohlgemuth
Former Newberg resident Delmer G. Wohlgemuth died March 28, 2002, at his home in Vancouver, Wash. He was 83.
He was born Oct. 26, 1918, in American Falls, Idaho, to Dan and Emma Wohlgemuth. When he was 2 years old his family moved to Newberg where he grew up and graduated from Newberg High School. He graduated from Oregon State University in 1949 with a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering.
He worked his entire career for the Bonneville Power Administration, retiring in 1972 as head of research and development. While at the BPA, he received many honors for meritorious service, including a gold medal that was presented by the secretary of the interior in Washington, D.C. He lived in Vancouver, Wash., for the last 56 years.
He enjoyed his family and friends and especially enjoyed working with computers.
Survivors include: wife Geneva; sons, Craig of Vancouver, Wash., Loren of Gearhart and Mark of Anchorage, Alaska; sisters, Idella Gaibler and Rosalie Gano, both of Newberg, and Margery Brash of Albany; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
He was a member of the First Evangelical Church where his memorial service was held April 2.
Rebecca A. Smith
Rebecca Ann Smith of Newberg died April 3, 2002. She was 51.
She was born Feb. 19, 1951, in Portland to James and Ruth (Peck) Smith. She grew up and attended Portland schools and graduated from Lake Oswego High School. She then attended Portland Community College, Portland State University and Linfield College.
In 1984, she married
Charles Fuchs in Newport. For 20 years she was a certified employee benefits specialist and worked in the field of human resources, specifically with employee benefits and retirement plans. She was also a retirement supervisor for Rite-Aid until 1997, after which she became ill. She enjoyed reading and was an avid gardener and cook, family members said.
Survivors include: husband Chuck of Newberg; mother Ruth Smith of Lake Oswego; brother Stuart of Portland and sister Heidi Smith of Portland.
At the request of the family, no service will be held.

Vernie E. Starbuck
Vernie Evelyn Starbuck of Sublimity died April 2, 2002. She was 86.
She was born March 22, 1916, in Riverside, Wash. When she was 2 years old her family moved to Myrtle Creek. She graduated from Myrtle Creek High School. On March 26, 1934, she married
Donald Starbuck. She worked as a bank teller for many years at First Interstate (now Wells Fargo) in Roseburg, Albany and Philomath, retiring in 1982. She moved to Newberg in 1986 to live with her daughter. She lived there for 14 years before moving to the Stayton-Sublimity area.
According to her family, she made many friends wherever she lived and didnt know a stranger. She also enjoyed giving hugs, garage sales, antiques, plants and especially animals, as well as china painting and making pine needle baskets. She also enjoyed country music and playing the piano.
She was baptized in February and enjoyed the fellowship of attending church for the past five months and loved to talk about her pastor.
Survivors include: daughter Gladys Hasbargen of Newberg; sons, Phil of Scio and Donald "Larry" of Valdez, Alaska; stepdaughter Deloris Driskill of Riverside, Calif.; 19 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by husband, Donald, in 1969, son Victor in 2000, seven brothers and two sisters.
