Thomas R. Norwood
Thomas Richard Norwood of Newberg died May 7, 2007. He was 69.
He was born April 2, 1938, in Leland, Miss., to Daniel and Baldwyn (White) Norwood. He worked in security and trucking.
Survivors include: wife Diane of Newberg; sons, Richard of Dayton and Thomas of McMinnville; daughters, Catherine Manriguez of Newberg and Regina Christopher of Dayton.
No public services are scheduled.

George Thomas
George Thomas of Newberg died April 23, 2007. He was 88.
He was born Jan. 26, 1919, to Clyde and Mary (Kellogg) Thomas in Scotts Mills. As a teenager, he felt the call to missionary work in Africa and attended Pacific College (now George Fox University) to pursue that goal, graduating in 1941.
Following graduation, he traveled to Mexico as part of a relief team to help earthquake victims. Returning to the U.S., he moved to Kentucky to teach school. While there, he met Dorothy Hughes, who was also planning to be a missionary in Africa. They were married
in 1943 and departed to Burundi, Africa, where they served five missionary terms from 1944 to 1972.
They also served as missionaries to the Navajo Indians in Rough Rock, Ariz., and pastored Northwest Friends churches in Sprague River and in Woodland, Idaho. Between these pastorates they returned to Rwanda, Africa, for two years to establish a mission there. They retired to Friendsview Retirement Community in 2000.
In 2002, he received the Heritage Award for Christian Service from George Fox University.
Survivors include: wife Dorothy of Newberg; daughters, Rosemary Livingston and Rebecca Ankeny; brother William; sister Mary Dike; four granddaughters and five great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was held April 29 at Newberg Friends Church.

J. Edward Baker
James Edward Baker of Newberg died May 2, 2007. He was 96.
He was born Feb. 15, 1911, to William and Etta (Glover) Baker at Chehalem Center. In 1935, he married
Violet Newton. He graduated from Pacific Academy (now George Fox University) in 1938 and attended Portland Bible Institute.
He worked as a pastor in the Friends Church for more than 50 years, beginning in 1934 in Caldwell, Idaho. After retiring in 1981, he and his wife settled in Quincy, Wash. They returned to Oregon in 2005.
Survivors include: his wife Violet of Newberg; son John of East Wenatchee, Wash.; daughters, Rachel Reinertsen of West Linn and Bethel Thoennes of Corvallis; nine grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Lester, Lawrence, Lyle and Vernon; and sister Ruth Pratt.
A funeral service was held Monday at North Valley Friends Church with pastor Bryan Christenson officiating. Committal followed at Noble Pioneer cemetery in Newberg.

Franklin L. Mattson Jr.
Franklin Lewis Mattson Jr. of Carlton, who worked in Newberg, died April 26, 2007. He was 70.
He was born May 20, 1936, to Franklin and Cora (McCambridge) Mattson in Portland. The family moved to Hockinson, Wash., when he was young and he graduated from Battle Ground High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving for four years. Returning home, he worked for Consolidated Freightway and Laughlin Logging.
In 1969, he joined Publishers Paper Company (now SP Newsprint). He retired in 2003 as the top operator at the de-inking plant.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, farming, reading, doing crossword puzzles and supporting his grandchildren's sports activities.
Survivors include: sons, Brad of Carlton and Randall of Vancouver, Wash.; daughters, Teresa Brey of Carlton, Sandra Kirkland of Portland and Sheryl Joseph of Portland; sister Kathleen Jenkins of Vancouver, Wash.; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. May 3 at Macy and Son Funeral Chapel, 135 N. Evans St., McMinnville. Committal will be in a private family ceremony.

G. Stewart Low
Gordon Stewart Low of Newberg died Sept. 14, 2007. He was 88.
He was born Dec. 25, 1918, in Elbow, Saskatchewan, Canada, to William and Bertha (Rolen) Low. In 1937 the family moved to Vancouver, B.C., Canada. He attended the Radio College of Canada in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, in 1945. He then moved to Roseburg, where he started working for Pierce Freight Lines as an accountant.
On May 24, 1952, he married
Cornelia Williams. The couple met at an archery club. He was transferred by his employers to Portland in 1953.
He bought a 20-acre walnut and filbert farm in Sherwood in 1961 while continuing to work for Pierce Freight Lines. He sold the farm and moved to Newberg in 1967. He then worked for Interstate Heavy Hauling in Portland, retiring in 1982 and moving into a retirement community in 1999.
He was a Mason and was lodge master in 1961 in Beaverton. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Newberg.
Survivors include: sons, Stewart and Ray; four brothers; two sisters; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Cornelia in 2004.
Viewing and visitation will be 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 23 in Attrell's Newberg Funeral Chapel. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Sept. 23 in the First Presbyterian Church with Pastor Ron Hues officiating.

Betty McAlpin
Betty J. McAlpin, formerly of Newberg, died Sept. 9, 2007, in Hillsboro. She was 80.
She was born June 20, 1927, in Portland to Chester and Doris (McLoughlin) Hanville. She grew up in Newberg, graduating from Newberg High School in 1945. In February 1946, she married
Bert Keifer in Newberg. The couple had two children before divorcing.
She married
in February 1959 to Donald McAlpin in Stevenson, Wash. They settled in Spokane in 1960, where she worked as a clerk for the Rockwood Clinic. In 1996, the couple returned to Oregon, settling in Cornelius.
She enjoyed painting, cooking, gardening, hunting and camping trips. She was a member of the Spokane Elks Lodge and bowled on several leagues while living in Spokane.
Survivors include: sons, Steve Keifer of Hillsboro and Kelly McAlpin of Spokane; daughter Jackie Waddell of Yamhill; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Donald and sisters Thelma Campbell and Gwen Thornton.
No services will be held at her request. Committal will be in the Willamette National cemetery in Portland. Memorial contributions may be made to Frontier Missions, 3324 N.W. Marine Drive, Troutdale, OR 97060.
Rosanna J. Brouer
Rosanna Jane Brouer of Newberg died Sept. 10, 2007, at a McMinnville assisted living facility. She was 94.
She was born May 23, 1913, in Smith Center, Kan., to John and Nellie (McMullen) Rhoades. After graduation from high school, she moved to Dayton and later Newberg, where she worked for the local cannery. She married
Wilhelm Brouer in November 1938. They resided in Eagle Creek before returning to Newberg.
Survivors include: sons, Robert of Apex, N.C., Richard of Federal Way, Wash., and Russell of Baker City; daughter Sharon Barton of McMinnville; 11 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded her in death by husband Wilhelm, four brothers and two sisters.
A funeral service was held Sept. 13 in Grace Baptist Church. Committal took place at Valley View Memorial Park.

Jewel Haveman
Jewel Haveman of Newberg died Sept. 5, 2007. She was 84.
She was born Nov. 9, 1922, in Enid, Okla., to John and Susie (Misenhimer) Williams. Her family moved many times before they settled in the Carlton area, where she attended White Cloud Elementary and Carlton High School. She worked several years at the Carlton Glove Factory and in September 1944 married
Eldon Haveman. They lived in the Portland area and McMinnville before settling in the Chehalem Valley in 1951.
She was a member of West Chehalem Friends Church, the Rural Homemakers Club and the Christian Women's Club. She also volunteered at the Newberg Thrift Store.
She enjoyed gardening and traveling, especially vacations to the Netherlands, and annual deer hunting trips to the Ochoco Mountains. She also enjoyed collecting toothpick holders, knitting, crocheting and a variety of crafts.
Survivors include: son Randall of Newberg; daughters, Tamara Larson of Newberg, Marsha Robinson of Otis and Tonya Van Bueren of Winthrop, Wash.; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by husband Eldon in August 2002; sister Juanita; and two infant grandchildren.
A funeral service was held Sept. 14 at West Chehalem Friends Church.

Donald R. McLean
Donald Robert McLean of Dundee died Sept. 8, 2007 He was 83.
He was born July 1, 1924, in Pendleton to Kenneth and Erma (King) McLean. He moved to Tigard in 1941, where he graduated from Tigard High School. In March 1946, he married
Joyce Sims in Corvallis. He graduated from Oregon State University in 1949 with a bachelor's degree in food science and technology. He worked at The Dalles Co-op in quality control for two years before returning to Tigard, where he worked for his father in their hardware store. He later took a job at Tektronix in Beaverton as an information analyst.
He retired in 1986 and moved to Dundee. He was an avid traveler and enjoyed trips in his motorhome. He also enjoyed computers and woodworking.
Survivors include: wife Joyce of Dundee; sons, Gary of Fruitland, Idaho, and Vernon of Bishop, Calif.; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A private service will be held at Valley View Memorial Park with Pastor Gary Langenwalter officiating.

Cora M. Rowland
Newberg native Cora May Rowland died Sept. 6, 2007. She was 88.
She was born Aug. 25, 1919, in Newberg to Loren and Elsie May (Douthit) Payne. Her family moved to Moore's Valley when she was 5-years-old and she attended Yamhill High School.
On June 12, 1935, she married
Harry Rowland. She held jobs as an assembly worker and in the restaurant business before joining the staff of the Hillsboro hospital, retiring in 1984.
She enjoyed flowers, embroidery and gardening.
Survivors include: son LaRoy of Newberg; daughters, Peggy Burch of McMinnville and Arla May Scott of Tigard; half-brothers Paul Smith and Robert Smith of Tillamook; half-sister Wilma Reece of California; 11 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Harry in 2005, and by five half-brothers and one half-sister.
A service was held Monday morning at Chapel of Macy & Son at Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery with Pastor Lon Eckdahl officiating.
