Miriam Teeters
Miriam A. Teeters, 87, of Newport died Jan. 20, 1999 at Newport Care Center.
She was born in Anoka, Minn. on March 3, 1911 to Bertie Lapham and Alva L. French. She moved to Idaho in 1933, and in 1936, married Philip Lettenmaier and moved to Oregon. He preceded her in death in 1970.
The couple owned and operated Waldport Realty and Insurance for 25 years. Mrs. Teeters was organist and choir director at the Community Presbyterian Church in Waldport for 19 years.
In 1973, she married D'Burl Teeters, who preceded her in death in 1993.
Survivors include her step-daughters Clorese Stewart of Boise, Idaho and Betty Tatro of Molalla.
At her request, no services will be held. Arrangements are by Bateman Funeral Home, with cremains inurned at Eureka Cemetery.
Eva Jones
Eva Mae Jones, 84, of Lincoln City died Jan. 19, 1999 in Lincoln City.
She was born in New York Mills, Minn. on Jan. 21, 1914 to Fredrick A. and Lottie Mae (Stiner) Roth. She married Otha Jones in Wichita, Kansas on Dec. 23, 1935. They owned the dry cleaners in Prineville for many years before moving to Portland in 1947, where they started another dry cleaners and later operated the concession at Rooster Rock State Park.
The couple moved to the coast in 1965, where Mrs. Jones worked as a licensed practical nurse at various nursing homes. She was a Jehovah's Witness.
Surviving are her husband, Otha Jones of Lincoln City; daughters Judith Kay Rogers of Vienna, Va., and Janeen Elaine White of Albany; a sister, Mildred Patton of San Leandro, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Joanne Kirven, in 1980.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 1160 SE 27th St., Lincoln City. Memorial contributions have been suggested to the Kingdom Hall Building Fund, 1502 NE Voyage Ave., Lincoln City 97367. Pacific View Memorial Chapel is serving the family.
F.H. "Chick" Latham
F.H. "Chick" Latham, 74, of Newport died at his home on Jan. 18, 1999.
He was born in Carlsbad, N.M. on May 14, 1924 to John and Harriet (Goodall) Latham. The family moved to Spur, Texas, the same year he was born, and he was raised and graduated from high school there. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army's 11th Airborne Division. He received a medical discharge because of injuries he sustained.
Upon recovering from his injuries, he returned to Texas and enrolled at Texas A&M to finish his education. In 1950, he earned his bachelor of science degree in agricultural engineering and in that same year, he married Betty Phelps of Beaver, Okla. He was employed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service, and worked there until his retirement in 1979.
He belonged to the Veterans of Foreign Wars and was a member of the American Legion, where he served in numerous posts.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Betty; a son, Mark Latham of Orting, Wash.; a daughter, Carla Latham of Truckee, Calif.; brothers John Latham, Clyde Latham and Albert Latham; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Glenn Latham and Joseph Latham.
A memorial service may be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of DeMoss-Durdan Garden Chapel of Corvallis.
Marie Curtice
Marie Curtice, 63, of Corvallis died at Heart of the Valley Care Center on Jan. 11, 1999.
She was born in Colome, S.D. to Ackley and Ruth (Crawford) Van Schoonhoven. The family moved to Pomona, Calif. when she was 3, and she graduated from Pomona High School. She married Richard Leonard Curtice in Quartzsite, Ariz. in June of 1954. They settled in Riverside, Calif.
Several years after she and her husband were separated, she began work at McClellan Air Force Base near Sacramento in 1963 as a civilian clerk. In 1974, she lived in Albany while working for the Department of Veterans Affairs' tax department in Salem. After a couple of years, she returned to Sacramento and worked again at McClellan Air Force Base sealing jet fuel tanks. She also helped to run a motorcycle repair shop, and enjoyed riding through the surrounding countryside and participating in road races as a starter and pit crew member.
She suffered a brain aneurysm in 1980, and following surgery, recovered while living with various family members. She volunteered at Albany General Hospital's microfilm department for a short time. She enjoyed sports and crossword puzzles.
Survivors include her children, Barbara Manning of Newport, Paul Curtice of Albany, Wilma Pechar of Lebanon, Linda Sakamoto of Waldport and Julie Bass of Albany; siblings Irene Cushing of Sheridan, Ark., Virgil Van Schoonhoven of Modesto, Calif., Esther Alger of Mesa, Ariz., Henrietta Chartier of Addy, Wash. and Jeanie Morris of Portland; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, Richard Curtice Jr., in 1993.
Private visitation and funeral services have been held. Memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society may be made care of DeMoss-Durdan Garden Chapel, 815 NW Buchanan, Corvallis 97330.
Joan Lee Salazar
Joan Lee Salazar, 43, of Napa, Calif. died Jan. 12, 1999.
She was born in Eugene on Aug. 21, 1955 to Gordon and Carol Carpenter. She attended schools in Newport and graduated in 1973. She moved to the Napa Valley in 1974 and married Steve Salazar.
She worked in the hospital industry and in banking, and aided in developing Merge Technologies with her companion, Gary Fields. After his death, she ran the business until she became ill in 1998.
Survivors include her daughter, Andrea Salazar of Napa, Calif.; her mother, Carol Paz of Toledo; sisters Sue Carpenter of Astoria, and Lorraine Leech and Patricia Lapham, both of Toledo; nieces Shawna Brawley and Ashleigh Barrera; and nephews Tyson and Drew Allen and Christian and Matthew Lapham. She was preceded in death by her sister, Diana, in 1970.
Memorial services were held Jan. 16 in St. Helena, Calif. Disposition was by cremation, and, at her request, her ashes will be scattered at sea by her family.
Harriet Miles
Harriet I. Miles, 75, of Newport died Jan. 25, 1999 in Corvallis.
She was born in Glendive, Mont. on May 7, 1923 to William E. and Myrtle I. (Devine) Bush. She was raised in Glendive and attended school in Bloomfield, Bonner and Missoula.
In 1939, she married Howard Talcott in Missoula, Mont. They lived in Missoula until 1950, when they moved to Torrance, Calif., where they raised their children. Her husband died in 1970.
She moved to Newport in 1971 and became part of a group that purchased Sawyer's Landing. She opened the Mad Dog Country Tavern in the late 1970s and owned and operated the tavern until last month, when illness forced her to relinquish her involvement with day-to-day operations.
Survivors include her daughter, Mary Andrews of Torrance, Calif.; son, Jim Miles of Victorville, Calif.; lifetime companion, Paul Butler of Newport; sisters Florence Parra of Fresno, Calif. and Dorothy Scillo of Everett, Wash.; brothers Leo Bush of Ovando, Mont., Earl Bush of Sun City West, Ariz., John Bush of Tucson, Ariz. and Harold Bush of Issaquah, Wash.; a granddaughter, Joy Murikami of Valencia, Calif.; and great-grandchildren Amber and Shannon Murikami, both of Valencia, Calif.
A memorial service will be held at 3 pm. Friday at DeMoss-Durdan Garden Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to Benton Hospice Services, Inc. in care of DeMoss-Durdan Garden Chapel, 815 NW Buchanan Ave., Corvallis 97330.
Brett Heckert
Brett Levi Heckert, 5 days old, died of a rare, fatal chromosome disorder at Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland on Jan. 22, 1999.
He was born in Toledo on Jan. 17, 1999 to Daniel and Leona Heckert.
Survivors include his parents, Daniel and Leona Heckert of Toledo; grandparents Jim and Marie Ennis of Madras, Colleen Heckert of Toledo, and Dan Heckert of Newport; great-grandparents Dave and LaVonne Carver of Eddyville, Don and Nadeane Heckert of Medford, James and Mya Ennis of Seneca, Janet and Kenneth Buck of Madras, Vera Sutherland of Terrebonne and Mark Sutherland of Hawaii; great-great-grandparents Zelie Sutherland of Redmond, Laila Dexter of Madras and Otto Heckert of Medford; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Feb. 6 at Toledo Middle School.
Ruth Darneal
Ruth B. Darneal, 83, of Toledo died at her home on Jan. 25, 1999.
She was born in Pleasant Grove, Utah on March 3, 1914 to William Edward and Ella Ettie Boatman. She lived in Toledo for 22 years. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Newport. She worked in the Church History Center for 12 years, where she helped patrons find their family history.
Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Jeanette and Don Stanfield of Fullerton, Calif., Sharon and Walt Rager of Toledo and Rudene Wagner of Vista, Calif.; two sisters; a brother; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman Henry Sells.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Crestview Drive in Newport. Graveside services will be held at Eureka Cemetery in Newport. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations in her name to Hospice of Newport.
