Russell J. White
Russell J. White of Newberg died Feb. 24, 2007, due to complications arising from pneumonia and lymphoma. He was 70.
He was born Aug. 2, 1936, in Lawrence, Mass. He attended school through the eighth-grade. He worked as a handyman, groundskeeper and maintenance worker.
He was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church and the Monday Hikers Group at the Chehalem Senior Center. He enjoyed building models and furniture, and fixing cars.
He was preceded in death in 1956 by his wife and child in a drunk driving accident, as well as parents and some foster brothers. He has no survivors.
A Recital of the Rosary will be held at 1:45 p.m followed by a funeral mass at 2 p.m. Sunday at Our Lady of Peace Retreat Center in Beaverton.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Lymphoma Society in care of Faith in Action of Newberg.

Darlene L. Eve
Darlene Lilly (Johnston) Eve, formerly of Newberg, died Feb. 21, 2007, in Portland. She was 79.
She was born Sept. 2, 1928, in Tillamook to David and Edith Lilly. She attended Newberg High School, graduating in 1945, and studied nursing for a year at George Fox University.
On June 15, 1947, she married Harold Johnston in Newberg.
She was a member of the Piedmont Friends Church in Portland, where she taught Sunday school classes for more than a decade.
She was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1955 and was a resident at the Bishop Morris Care Center and the Fairlawn Healthcare Center from 1980 until her death.
She remarried Charles Eve in 1968. He preceded her in death in 1980.
Survivors include: sons, Richard and Howard of Portland; daughters, Laneta Meeker of Temecula, Calif., Celesta Rea of Hong Kong; 12 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Feb. 25 at the Newberg Friends Church. Disposition was by cremation.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, in care of the Ross Hollywood Chapel in Portland.

Kathryn A. Stewart
Kathryn Ann Stewart died Feb. 24, 2007, in Newberg. She was 60.
She was born Aug. 24, 1946, in Scottsbluff, Neb., to Floyd and Bernice (Carter) Porter. She grew up in Grandview, Wash. She moved to Portland and married Robert Stewart on May 16, 1975. After their marriage, they lived in several towns in Yamhill County, settling in Yamhill in 1987.
She worked at Intel in Beaverton for 11 years and at the Newberg Fred Meyer store for 10 years. In 2003, she moved to Newberg.
Survivors include: husband Robert of Newberg; sons, Robert Porter of Atwater, Calif., and James, Timothy and Robert Jr. of Newberg; stepsons, Timothy Blaine of McMinnville and Ted Wade of Yamhill; stepdaughter Brenda Montgomery of Colorado; brother Louis Porter of Oregon City; and four grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Duncan.
A graveside service was held Feb. 27 in the Friends cemetery with the Rev. James Stark officiating.

Cecil W. Johnson
Cecil W. 'John' Johnson, who has relatives in Newberg, died Feb. 12, 2007, at his home in Milwaukie. He was 78.
He was born June 10, 1928, in Portland to Elvin and Lydia Johnson. He attended Franklin and Benson high schools. During the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps under Gen. MacArthur.
After his discharge, he went into business designing, manufacturing and selling modular homes, motor homes and trailers under the name C.W. Johnson Enterprises Inc. He later went into land development and construction in Washington County.
He married Carol May Larson in December 1982, and they lived briefly in Newberg. He had three adopted children and one daughter from a previous marriage.
He was a private pilot and president of the Beaverton chapter of the Oregon Pilots Association. He also enjoyed nature, boating and golfing.
Survivors include: wife Carol of Milwaukie; daughter Kay Ann Swickard of Kent, Wash.; stepsons, Kenneth of Newberg and Kerry of Beaverton; stepdaughters, Karen of El Cahon, Calif. and Tracy Mooney of Hillsboro; brothers, Elvin of Portland and Charles of Redmond; sisters, Sybil Walsh of Portland and Florence Reed of Oregon City; and two grandchildren.
At the request of the family there will be no memorial service. Arrangements are in care of Attrell's Newberg Funeral Chapel.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Oregon Lung Association in care of Attrell's, 207 Villa Road, Newberg OR 97132.

Harold Hinckley
Harold 'Hal' Hinckley of Dundee died Feb. 20, 2007. He was 90.
He was born Nov. 30, 1916, in Lawrence, Mass., and grew up on the East Coast, where he attended the Casey Jones School of Aeronautics.
He worked as an aircraft mechanic at LaGuardia Airfield in New York. Following his service in World War II, he worked for Roscoe Turner, an award-winning race pilot turned airline owner, in Indianapolis.
He married Betty Bush in 1942. The couple returned to New York in 1952, where Hinckley began a career in avionics part sales.
In 1982, he retired after traveling to Europe, Asia and Australia as an aircraft industry representative. He and his wife settled in North Carolina, relocating to Oregon in 2000 to be near their daughter.
He enjoyed gardening and woodworking, and spent the past five years as a volunteer at the Evergreen Aviation Museum.
He was preceded in death by his wife in 2002.
Survivors include: daughter Jan Newhouse; four grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
No public service is scheduled. Arrangements are in care of Attrell's Newberg Funeral Chapel.

Doris M. Lee
Doris Marie Lee died Feb. 14, 2007, at a local care home. She was 84.
She was born Sept. 8, 1922, in California to Henry and Lorena (Rogers) Washabaugh. She attended school in Pismo Beach, Calif. In 1944 she married Hubert Lee in Yuma, Ariz. They later divorced.
She lived in Vallejo, Calif., where she worked in the food service industry. In 1982, she moved to Eugene to be near her daughter and grandchildren.
She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, crossword puzzles and dogs.
Survivors include: daughter Linda Frazier of Tigard; son Jimmy Lee of Rohnert Park, Calif.; brother Bill Washabaugh of Placerville, Calif.; sister Ann Hall of Vallejo; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by sons Robert and Charles Lee and brother Cramer Washabaugh.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today (Saturday) in Attrell's Newberg Funeral Chapel with Pastor Jim Parr-Philipson officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Masonic Home for Children in care of Attrell's, 207 Villa Road, Newberg OR 97132.

Clyde L. Payne
Clyde Lewis Payne, a resident of the Newberg area, died Feb. 7, 2007, in Portland. He was 87.
He was born Feb. 8, 1919, in Detroit Lake, Minn., to Pearl and Emily (Emmerson) Payne. He graduated from Newberg High School in 1937. He was a logger, a literature evangelist for the Oregon Conference, a lay pastor for the Seventh-day Adventist Church, and a master gardener. He married Elizabeth Hart in 1958 in Portland.
Survivors include: wife Elizabeth; daughter Judy Arnold; brothers, Earl of Tualatin and Jesse of Gaston; sisters, Thelma Winter of Happy Valley, Vadah Dunn of Oregon City and June Krause of Sherwood; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by brothers Elvin and Cash.
A memorial service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Sunday at the Newberg Seventh-day Adventist Church. Arrangements are in care of Bateman Carroll Funeral Home of Gresham.

Luella G. Chamberlain
Luella Gail Chamberlain died Feb. 8, 2007. She was 86.
She was born June 16, 1921, to William and Amy (Sherman) Heimstadt in Eau Claire, Wis. In 1939, she moved to Monterey, Calif. She married Walter Chamberlain on July 5, 1939. They lived in California, Wisconsin and, following her husband's Air Force service during World War II, Chicago and Billings, Mont.
They came to Oregon in 1948, living in Sheridan before buying the Corbett Acres farm near Willamina.
They later lived in Eugene; Springfield; Sitka, Alaska; and Show Low, Ariz., where she worked as a bank teller and office manager for the Arizona Highway Department.
They returned to Oregon in 1967, making their home in Newberg. She worked for NorPac, Ray Hopp Insurance and the Newberg School District.
In 1980, they bought a winter home in Yuma, Ariz. Her husband Walter preceded her in death in 1989.
She continued to live in Newberg, where she was a member of the Newberg Community Hospital Auxiliary, Newberg First Baptist Church and Order of the Eastern Star.
She enjoyed reading, gardening, dancing, playing cards and singing with the group Sweet Adelines.
In 1995, she married Robert Nelson after meeting him at a class reunion. They divided their time between Newberg and Wisconsin. She was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 1998.
Survivors include: husband Robert of Newberg; daughter Gail Chamberlain of Dundee; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Viewing and visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at Attrell's Newberg Funeral Chapel. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Attrell's Newberg Funeral Chapel with Pastor Larry Smithwick officiating. Committal will follow at Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg.
Memorial contributions may be made to The Alzheimer's Association in care of Attrell's, 207 Villa Road, Newberg OR 97132.

Arthur P. Davidson
Arthur Paul Davidson died Feb. 13, 2007. He was 93.
He was born Jan. 30, 1914, in Charlotte, Mich., to James and Ulrica (Ottney) Davidson. He attended school in Michigan. As teenagers, he and one of his brothers traveled to Brookings and then to McMinnville.
He married Marjorie Winters in September 1941. After three years, they moved to Dundee where they lived for 63 years.
He worked as a bus driver with Greyhound Bus Lines for 30 years. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. He enjoyed traveling to different states and countries and gardening at his home.
His wife Marjorie preceded him in death in March 2006.
Survivors include: son Roger of Tigard; daughter Loretta Hubbel of Newberg; brother James and sister Verlee, both of Michigan; five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was held Monday at Attrell's Newberg Funeral Chapel with Pastor David Case officiating. A concluding service was held at Dundee Pioneer cemetery.
